Curiouser And Curiouser, Part 2 I have a feeling, in this inarguably bizarre Presidential election season, that the idea of “Curiouser and Curiouser" may end up being a series. As a refresher, the term came from Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, published in 1865. It is the language that Alice uses after falling down the rabbit hole, and all of her world is turned upside down.

The Sacrifice Of A SEAL

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Statisically, from what I have been told, it is much less common for Navy SEALS to get killed in combat than members from any other branch of service. The reason is that they come so close to dying while they are in training, that they gain skills possessed by few that pay off in the field. It costs them dearly to gain those skills, but it benefits them and us. It is always a tragedy when a warrior dies in combat, but when a SEAL passes, again, statistically, it is nearly always in the context of specifically giving himself for others.

Such was the case with Charles Keating, IV, of Arizona. He was killed on Tuesday, May 3rd, helping rescue multitudes from an ISIS/ISIL attack in Iraq. Since 2014, we have redeployed some of the crème de la crème to Iraq in a largely advisory capacity. While it could certainly be argued that if we had gotten the job done the first

by Paul King, Limestone County Deputy Sheriff The 34th annual Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo is just around the corner, and the “get ready” events have already begun.The program is being set for the publisher, T-shirt orders for all the Special Needs Rodeo participants are being processed, all the event and major sponsors have been secured, the Street Dance and Fashion Show are being planned, and committees of volunteers are receiving their instructions to complete a successful event. The Queen contestant applications are being processed, and in addition to all of the traditional goings on, the Sheriff’s Office staff and volunteers are making last minute plans for the biggest outdoor rodeo east of the Mississippi River.

What began 33 years ago as a means to supplement the purchase of patrol cars for the sheriff’s office has now blossomed into a community event that is second to none.

Teresa Todd, President of the Athens Limestone Tourism Association estimates the revenue impact from the rodeo at over a million dollars locally.

Camellia’s Country Store And Restaurant: A Café And A Community All In One

by Ali Elizabeth Turner In May of 2015, Camellia Moree, owner of Camellia’s Country Store and Restaurant, opened up a “country cookin’ place” on the corner of Lucas Ferry Road and Nuclear Plant Road, where Athens meets Tanner. She is no newcomer to folks in our area, as she had previously operated the restaurant in the same location, Marie’s Country Store, as well as had a successful catering business. For several years she had a contract with TVA to provide “home-cooked” food for employees. She would work around the clock during an outage, sometimes only getting 30 minutes of sleep. “We were all in it together,” she said. When the day came that Camellia was

offered a new opportunity, she says she was “cryin’ like a baby, ‘cuz we were like family.”

Wherever Miss Camellia goes, she “builds her a community.” “I’ll be back, you just hang on,” she told her “TVA-ers,” and they knew, God willing, she’d be true to her word.

“Life happens,” as they say, and during this tough time, she also lost her dearest friend and head cook, Peaches Walton. Even talking about it all these years later brings tears to her eyes, and there is a monument to their friendship hanging on the wall right next to the kitchen. The current location became available in May of last year,

and it is a pleasure to announce that business is brisk, and the word is spreading.

By way of background, Camellia grew up in Andrews, SC, in what she

calls the “low country.”

Her parents operated a BBQ place for 30 years, have since passed, and it’s still going strong.

She learned a number of things beside how to

cook for a crowd from her parents. The first and most important thing they taught her was, “Ya gotta love your customers,” she told me. Her parents also told her that if you “Be good to your customers, and cook good food, you won’t have to worry about customers.” She has certainly followed that advice, and when I visited during lunch hour, the place was packed. The Fire Marshall will let her have a few over 60 seated at any one time, and as one of her servers told me with a happy sigh, “It’s like this every day.”

Hard work is obviously another component for success, and Camellia’s is open from 5am to 1:30pm, Monday through Saturday, with the help of staff who are as dedicated as she is. She also says, with a charming blend of firmness and shyness,

She was thoughtful, and then said, “We have good quality food, and we put the love into the food.” She went on to say, “We like to laugh and joke with our customers, and make them feel at home.” I will also add that they’ll cry with their customers, too, as I had just received the news that a very dear friend, (who would have felt right at home at Camellia’s), had suddenly passed, minutes before our appointment.

I was conducting this part of the interview through tears while we sat outside on the picnic bench, and when we were finished, Miss Camellia gave me what one friend describes so

that she is “funny about good quality food.” She is simply not going to cut corners, and, for example, the biscuits are made from scratch, and that’s just that.

She went on to tell me what they have found to be customer favorites, and the day I was there, two gentlemen, one from Huntsville and one from Madison, were glad to have made the trip just to get the “real deal.” Camellia says her signature piece is pork chops, which are served on Wednesdays. “On Friday, we have catfish,” she said. Other specials include fried chicken, BBQ chicken, ribs and salmon patties, and one client says he comes “just for the chicken.” There is meatloaf from an age old recipe, and the day I had lunch, my BBQ chicken fell right off the bone.

Summer Comes Early In Athens!

When it is May, it is time for the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo. Come out to the Downtown Square and enjoy the Sheriff’s Rodeo Parade on May 14th. Line up at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena located at Highway 99 at 1pm.

The Parade will take off around 2pm. The 34th Annual Rodeo Parade will feature our Queen Contestants along with our favorite Cowboys and Cowgirls. Along with the Limestone County Sheriff, Mike Blakely, will be our Grand Marshal, Allen Craig.

The Preston’s Rodeo Kickoff will be on May 15th at 5pm, with special fun for the young ones.

The Rodeo Street Dance and Fashion Show will take place at 6pm on the Downtown Square on May 17th, with the Jeff Whitlow Country band performing. May 19th is the all team roping contest.

Area elementary schools will reward their “Leader in Me” and “Reading Initiatives” participants with a field day to watch the “Slack” roping competition at 9am for free.

On May 20th at 10am, individuals with special needs will have the arena. A morning of roping, dancing, face-painting and a fun hay ride, followed by lunch for everyone who attends. Later in the evening will kick off our first night of the rodeo. Gates open at 6pm, and the Kids Gold Rush at 7pm and the events from Bronc Riding, Calf Roping to Steer Wrestling. On Saturday May 21st at noon, the Queen’s

Luncheon will be held at the Limestone County Event Center. See part of the requirements our Queen contestants undergo to achieve the title of Miss Limestone Rodeo Queen. The Queen will be crowned Saturday night at the Rodeo in the arena before thousands of guests. The Queens range from 3 years of age to the 18-26 years of age division. Prizes in the senior division compete for a trophy saddle, custom belt buckle, a watch, scholarship money and so much more. Put this event on your calendar and come out to see “The Largest Outdoor Rodeo East of the Mississippi” with over $50,000 in prize money!

What a GREAT time was had by all who attended!

KALB is so grateful to the generosity of Friendship Church in letting us basically "take over" their facilities!

Activities, exhibits, and animals spread from the outside grounds and through much of the church buildings! You could find critters that were microscopic in size, insects to hold, goats and alpacas to feed and pet, and Rosie, the beautiful horse from K.I.N. Stables to love on.

When did you first get involved in fitness?

I began running and participating in aerobic classes when I was in my 20’s, primarily because I wanted to look good. I soon realized it made me feel good too. Exercise helped me with sleep and the stress of my career as a chemist.

What inspired you to start a career in fitness?

I began teaching aerobic classes in order to earn a little extra money and get a free membership at a local gym. I realized I was good with people and really cared about the quality of classes that I was teaching. I wanted classes that welcomed everyone not just the young and fit.

Wherever I taught I tried to get the gym to offer class-

es for beginners. Because I started teaching at a time that certifications were not required, I saw lots of unsafe and poor quality classes. This led me to read as much as possible about fitness and choose to get an ACE Group Fitness Certification.

I continued to teach fitness classes wherever I lived.

Then after I decided I no longer wanted to work as a chemist and tried my hand at some small businesses outside the fitness field, I decided to open Curves.

Curves had an excellent program for women new to fitness or women uncomfortable in a gym setting. This was just the group that I liked to work with. While I had Curves, I studied and received my ACE Personal Training certification and then my

ACE Health Coach Certification.

What do you like most about the classes you are teaching now?

Most of my classes now and most of my personal training clients are 50+.

I think this group is most appreciative. They are more focused on their health and well-being rather than on their looks.

I am always thrilled when a student or client tells me the benefits they are seeing after just a few sessions. I look forward to every one of my classes and seeing every one of my clients!

What is your favorite workout to do on your own?

Because I have my own studio above our garage, I work out up there. I usually ride the elliptical do-

ing intervals and then resistance work with free weights or elastic tubing.

Sometimes I walk or run the neighborhood. If time

allows, I attend a yoga or pilates class.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I guess that depends on the time of year. If weather permits, I like to be outdoors working in the yard. If you want to find me on weekends in the spring, just drive by and look in the yard. I also love antique/junk shopping which is visible by the eclectic yard art. During the cold, dreary winter days, I read, work jigsaw puzzles, and make or fix jewelry. Once or twice a year, my husband and I travel. We enjoy visiting places that involve hiking, history, and culture.

Which client/student has inspired you most?

All my students/clients inspire me for different reasons. I think I have learned just as much from them as they have from me.

Whole Body Vibration machines have been designated as FDA Class 1 Medical devices, and their use has exploded. They are being used as therapeutic modalities in such varied places as nursing homes, rehab centers, and the Russian Men’s Olympic Gymnastics team.

Getting insurance coverage has been a game-changer, as has been the addition of a certified physical therapist and massage therapists as staff members. “Some people come in and just aren’t able to begin on the machines,” said Chip.

He added, “Now they can get physical therapy, and it is covered by their insurance.

Then they can go on (when their physical therapist says they are ready), and incorporate the technology as part of their therapy. They really can not only regain their former health, but also exceed it.”

The Folks Who Make Athens Beautiful

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Wednesday, May 04, 2016, the staff of City Hall and all the Departments that are going to “live” there began the process of invading the newly completed City Hall, and wrestling with the “giants” that always come out of hiding while in the process of moving. Some staff members had begun to move in stages last week, and it will take awhile for the “punch list” to be completed. There is a window here that has a streak, some tile there that needs to be straightened, a staffer that was locked out of their office, landscaping to be finished, and organization to be completed, but the move is going smoothly. Bottom line, the place is going to be a real blessing for the citizens of Athens, and will beautify our already beautiful city.

We sat at a small conference table in the Mayor’s office that had boxes and other proofs of the task at hand covering part of it. “Wow, what a wonderful weekend we had,” said Mayor Ronnie, and it was true. On Friday night the weather was fixin’ to misbehave, and Singing on the Square was moved to the Limestone County Event Center. It was a solid success. One of the performers was West Limestone’s Lillian Glanton, who had competed in Hollywood during the 2016 (and last) season of American Idol. She was accompanied by the Elk River Boys. Also appearing were Wade Oliver and the Good O Boys.

On Saturday, our town was hoppin’. Cars and Bikes on the Square brought hundreds of visitors, and over 700 cars, trucks, hot rods, classics, antiques, and restored vehicles were parked all around the

Square. Previously I had gotten to sit in a 1955 Porsche convertible that made me feel like Grace Kelly. Tom Schuman and so many more worked hard to bring a great event to Athens.

For the second year in a row, Friendship Methodist Church hosted the Keep Athens Limestone Beautiful Earth Day celebration, due largely to the fact that the event has outgrown Big Spring Park. Lynne Hart, director of KALB, estimates that at least 1200 people attended, and I think she’s right. Rachel Clark and I had a Juice Plus Tower Garden demo table, and I lost track of the people who stopped by our table. There were demonstrations, drawings, the most beautiful owl I have ever seen, animals to pet, food, Jim Swanner and his horse, Rosie, homemade soaps, Girl Scouts, essential oils, and more. As always, there was a huge crew of volunteers who happily made it all happen, because they want to be good stewards of what we have been given.

They Grieve, Too

by Joel Allen So, I am going to rant for a second. On the morning of April 15, 2016, (I may have the date wrong) I drove into town to grab some breakfast. As I was driving back on Looney Road, I saw a horse that was loose running on the side of the road.

Now people, when there is a thousand plus pound animal running loose on the side of the road, don’t speed past it. If the animal decides to panic and run out in front of your vehicle, there will not be time to stop. The cost would be too great and the “genius” who hit the animal would have no vehicle left.

Also, I would like to add that the “genius” who saw the man helping walk the horse back and sped by him driving a white 4x4 king cab should not have a license at all because YOU put that man walking the nervous horse at risk. I watched as the horse started to rear its head and thankfully the man maintained control. Lastly, this was in the Athens City limits so I am asking the Athens Police Department, if they would like more revenue that they set up a speed trap on Looney Road. I can’t tell the number of times my dash cam has caught someone blowing by me while I was driving 45 miles per hour, the legal speed, way before the city limit sign. Any Police Officer reading this please do not take offense I just foresee someone’s child getting run over on that road with all those houses.

Recently, there have been a few deaths in the community and during these tough times these families also have dogs.

Some families have told me that their dog’s behaviors have changed after the death of a loved one. Some have changed for the worse, as in trying to bite. Others have refused to go into certain

rooms in the house where the family member once lived. It is strange to hear people talk about these reactions.

But, think about it, how many of us hear these similar stories from families of the “Fallen?” Regardless if they are soldiers or police officers, I have seen videos where dogs attend

Medical Update

Preparing For Peace At The End Of Life: Part One

This is the title of a presentation coming to Athens State University on May 10, 2016 at 11:30am. In it, Dr. Monica Williams-Murphy will use her unique sense of humor to entertain you as you listen to her lecture on death and dying. I know you might think that sounds morbid, but humor is the key to many stressful situations in life, and the death and dying process is no different.

Dr. Murphy is the author of “It’s OK to Die,” and a board certified Emergency Medicine doctor. She currently practices at Huntsville Hospital, where I met her in October of 2014.

She attended medical school at the University of South Alabama, and completed her ER residency at the University of Virginia’s Charlottesville campus. As we were talking about her upcoming presentation, I asked her why she went into emergency medicine, especially given how gifted she is in the area of death, dying, and grief. She told me she had always wanted to be a doctor, and that she had considered oncology, but found that she had no desire for the pace. It also didn’t fit her personality, which is always on the go. She doesn’t slow down, and I’ve seen that in action on more than one occasion. She told me she had read the works of Elizabeth Kubler- Ross (a famous Swiss-American psychiatrist and pioneer in the study of death and dying) prior to going to medical school, and it resonated with her.

if “someone has to do it, why not me?” Emergency medicine also fit because every person who comes into the ER that is truly sick is in a time of crisis and transition, and she knew that she was called to that. Also unique to Dr. Murphy is that she can take these difficult topics and talk about them in a nonthreating manner, and still be emotionally present. She’s not the type of doctor who breaks the news that your loved one is dead or near death, and then walks away. She takes the time to sit with patients and families, answers all their questions, and connects with them on a deeper level. In the ER, there is

a “joke” that if Dr. Murphy is working, you can pretty much bet that there will be at least one case where you can see her in action, working her own special magic.

One of the things that she will be discussing at the event, which will be a community luncheon held in the Athens State University Ballroom, is the importance of a plan for end of life care. One thing that she believes to be instrumental is talking about your wishes before the issue ever arises so that there is no question of what you want if they do. She is passionate about educating people

Palliative care focuses on the emotional, family interactions, and spiritual care of all involved in the process, especially the patient.

I asked her about the difference between palliative care and hospice care. She told me that they are basically two sides of the same coin in that hospice is holistic management of a disease in its final stages (typically the final 6 months), whereas palliative care is for any person anywhere on the continuum of chronic and/or terminal disease. It includes more than just medications, although they are a part of the process as well.

I asked her why someone my age would want an advanced directive, why that would be important. Her passionate response was “Anything can happen to anyone at any time; 10% of Americans die unexpectedly. You don’t want to displace the decisions for your care to someone else without having informed them of what you would want. Make those decisions for yourself, so they don’t have to.” She also told me that it is important to have these documents on file with yourself, your surrogate decision maker(s), and in your electronic medical record at your physician’s office.

“What a different world we might have if doctors weren’t afraid to talk about death, if we had these conversations annually, right along with your routine physical,” she said.

But we don’t have those conversations, partially because we aren’t trained to handle it well. And the media doesn’t help; instead TV shows like House, Grey’s Anatomy, and Code Black portray medicine as miraculous and glamorous. In reality, it’s anything but. “As nurses and doctors, it’s our job to lovingly lower the expectations at the end of life if the miracle doesn’t happen,” she told me.

She knew there weren’t enough doctors out there talking about the hard things like death and dying, and since she’s never been one to shy away from difficult topics that others aren’t comfortable talking about. She figured

Run, Don’t Walk

by Paul Foreman I happen to agree with the jury. Mr. Zimmerman was in fear for his life. His head was being beat against the concrete sidewalk. He paid for his choice to leave the safety of his truck. He went through the horror of being tried in the media and the courts. He was threatened by people who decided he was guilty, even though they did not know the facts. His family was torn apart, and finally, Mr. Zimmerman moved away from his home town.

As Kenny Rogers says, “You got to know when to walk away and when to run!”

In recent years, one law has taken center stage in the self defense debate.

This is the infamous, “stand your ground law.”

Alabama is a stand your ground state. Not all states subscribe to this law. The “stand your ground law” became famous several years ago in Florida. In this case, Mr. Zimmerman shot a young man named Travon Martin. In reality, “Stand your ground” had nothing to do with the case. All stand your ground means is, “If you are legally in a public or private place, you are NOT required by law to retreat if you are threatened.” Standing your ground may not always be the wisest thing to do.

Example: You are walking to your car after leaving work. You are not committing any crime. In the parking lot, you see three rough looking characters standing outside a car which is parked near your car. You feel confident; after all, you are carrying your new 45 caliber pistol with seven rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber, plus seven more hollow points in your spare magazine. You have practiced shooting at the range and you always hit your target. As you come nearer to your car and the three rough looking men, a chill runs down your spine. You hear one of the rough looking men say, “Here comes the little sissy now, this is going to

be as easy as taking candy from a baby!”

The above scenario leaves you with several choices, not all of which may be legal. A) Confront the criminals with your gun drawn and demand they back off. B) Walk straight towards your car and wait for them to make the first move. C) When one of them pulls out a tire iron and comes toward you, you pull your gun and order him to back off. D) Walk straight back to the entrance to the building and a secure place, away from the threat.

Mr. Zimmerman was found innocent by reason of self defense. But over the next several years, his nightmare went on and on.

I thank the LORD I never had to shoot anyone when I was a cop in Florida.

But, I came real close to it a couple of times. On TV when a cop shoots someone, then blows the smoke out of the barrel and life goes on like nothing happened. Real life doesn’t always happen like on TV. I personally know several law enforcement officers who did use justified deadly force in the line of duty. Their life took on catastrophic changes.
