“Put Your Slippers Way Under The Bed” Two time Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington was asked this year to be the commencement speaker at Dillard University, a traditionally black college in New Orleans. Dillard boasts such well-known alumni such as Coretta Scott King and Marvin Gaye, but 40 years ago, Denzel himself was flunking out of Fordham University with a 1.7 GPA. Denzel did eventually go back to Fordham, and he did graduate, but not without first some “laps around Mt. Zion.” Perhaps Denzel was invited to be the keynote speaker because the Dillard administration knew he would unashamedly exhort the grads to have a healthy dose of humility. Perhaps it was his willingness to publically command the cap-andgown clad young people to “put God first.”

In the 11-minute speech, he “went there,” talking about how arrogant he had been when he first began to gain success as an actor. His mother basically told him that he could take himself outside, get a mop and a bucket, and start cleaning. However, that was not until she asked him, “Do you have any idea how many people have been praying for you?”

But Providence was not finished with Mr. W.

While still in his “all that and a bag of chips” state of mind; he went and visited his mom at her beauty shop, and a woman sitting under the salon dryer kept staring at him. Finally, she asked someone to get

her a piece of paper and a pencil, and she said she had a prophetic word for him. She told him many things, including that he “would travel the world, and speak to millions.”

At the time, he said, that did not seem very likely.

But it has indeed come to pass. And, now that he is 60, is successful by anyone’s estimation, and is an open book, he has earned the right to speak to what works, and what doesn’t. So, imagining myself as someone who was sitting in the audience, I decided to apply what he said had helped

him get there.

First, he said, “Put God first.” No political correctness there, thankfully. He made it clear that everything he had and is was due to the grace of God. He spoke of goal setting, and said,

“Don’t confuse movement with progress.” His mom would be the one to remind him that he could move while running in place, but not go anywhere. He spoke of service, and the fact that there is no greater joy than serving. It is indeed a divine selfishness, because nothing feels better. He described himself as being three things: “Protected, directed, and corrected.” He was quick to point out that even when he had not been faithful to God, God had been faithful to him.

However, there was one

admonition he gave that I shall never forget. He told the students when they go to bed at night, to put their slippers way back under the bed. As the well-trained actor that he is, he paused the perfect amount of time,

and then told them that the only way to get to the slippers was to get on their knees. Once there, he said, “Say thank you in advance for what you already have.” Timeless gratitude, and thus good advice for grads and grandparents. Thank you, Mr. Washington!

Chaplains Or Social Workers?

As Publisher of Athens Now, and someone who has a deep first hand appreciation for Chaplains and all they do for our troops, I have done my best to sound the alarm as often as I can when I become aware of the Constitutional freedoms with which our Chaplains minister being denied and villified. Sometimes I feel like I may be perceived as “crying wolf,” but, that’s a risk I’ll

take. Yet another Chaplain has been called on the carpet for ministering according to his faith, but this time there could be lives that are lost as a result, and to me, that is simply unacceptable.

Chaplain Joseph Lawhorn was conducting a suicide prevention training session for troops at Ft. Benning, GA, and “got real” with his soldiers. He did what few

officers do because of what it could do to their careers: he told the Joes that he, too, had struggled with severe depression, and told them what helped him get through it. While he made it clear that it was largely his faith, he gave them a handout that had, on one column, secular resources he had found helpful, and on the other side, a list of Bible verses that had fed him in the dark night of

his soul. All should have been well.

However, Chaplain Lawhorn was called into the office of his “higher,” where he was read what was labeled as “A Letter of Concern.” The letter accused him of unlawfully proselytizing, and stated that the Army could not tolerate having “Army resources” listed in the same document as Scriptures. Ummmm, this is a Chaplain, whom the Army pays to preach, pays to run seminars, pays to counsel, pays to bury soldiers, pays to comfort when they lose their buddies, and pays to keep them from killing themselves, but you can’t have your “resources” peacefully co-existing on the same piece of paper? If he uses “Army resources” to print out sermon notes, or words to hymns or lyrics to praise and worship music, is he in trouble? If he uses “Army resources,” such as an Army-built chapel in which to hold services, does he get to sing out, with the News Boys, Willie Robertson and other Americans, “My God’s not dead/He is surely alive/and He’s living

on the inside/roarin’ like a lion?”

When I was in Iraq, there was a clear, iron-clad order called General Order One. It was simple: no porn, no booze, no proselytizing.

Even in a Muslim country, “proselytizing” was understood to be aggressive and threatening, somewhat like being told that if you don’t convert to XYZ faith, you and your family will be tortured, killed, or both. It did not there, and does not ever mean the bold sharing of one’s faith or how one’s faith gave hope. How much less, when our soldiers are struggling with suicide, should a Chaplain be rebuked for taking the risk of being vulnerable to his flock, and telling them from the standpoint of true experience, that, “Guys, (and gals,) this worked for me, and I am here to help you in any way I can?” Chaplain Lawthorn should be getting a promotion for his courage, not some stupid “Letter of Concern.” He is a Chaplain, not a social worker, and unless that distinction is restored, civilian pulpits could be next.

“misc., upscale resale”: A Thrift Store Where You Become Family

by Ali Elizabeth Turner “Once upon a time,” two sisters planned for ten years to open a thrift store in Limestone County, gathered items to stock their store, and then tragedy struck. Kristie Klatt suddenly lost her sister and would be business partner, Norma Rohde, six years ago. The loss of Norma was extraordinarily hard on Kristie, her sisters, and Norma’s family. Kristie decided to forge ahead with her niece (and Norma’s daughter,) Rachel Rohde, to make the dream come true. As a result of their hard work and that of their family, “misc., upscale resale” opened in February of 2013, and is located at the intersection of East Limestone Rd and Nick Davis Rd. It is now two years later, and Rachel, having helped to launch the dream, has gone on to pursue her own. The whole family continues to help at what Kristie calls a “mom and pop store,” and misc. is one of my favorite places to visit on my Athens Now delivery route.

Another thing that gives Kristie joy is being able to help college kids furnish their first apartment. She loves it when people come in and say things like, “My Grandma had a bowl just like that. We ate out of it every Sunday!” “misc., upscale resale” wants everything they sell “to go to a good home,” and they firmly believe “everything has a story.” If you are looking for a place where you become family and the shopkeeper cares so much about you that they keep your wishes in a book, then “misc.,” is the place for you.

Lt. General Larry Wyche To Speak At Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum Memorial Day was started in 1868 when the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) started “Decoration Day” as the time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. After WWI, it was expanded to honor all who died in American wars. It wasn’t until 1971 that it was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress.

On Monday, May 25th at 11:00 am at the Limestone County Event Center, the Alabama Veterans’ Museum and Archives will be hosting our annual Memorial Day Program; this program will honor and remember our veterans who have fallen since last Memorial Day. I am pleased to announce that Lt. Gen Larry Wyche, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Materiel Command, will be our guest speaker. We will also be honored with music

provided by the Army Material Commands Yellahammer Brass Quintet.

Lt. General Larry Wyche assumed duties as the Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Materiel Command on April 10, 2015.

In this position, LTG Wyche also serves as the Senior Commander of Redstone Arsenal: The Executive Director for Conventional Ammunition; The Executive Director for Explosives Safety; and the Chief Operating Officer for the Department of the Army Depot Maintenance Corporate Board. He previously served as the Com-

manding General of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command, (CASCOM) and the Sustainment Center of Excellence at Fort Lee, Virginia.

His previous assignments included serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Operations of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

LTG Wyche also served as the Commanding General of the Joint Munitions and Lethality Life Cycle Management Command/Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island, Illinois. This command included more than 15,000 employees and soldiers with depots, arsenals, and ammunition plants in 17 locations. While serving as Brigade Commander, LTG Wyche deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he simultaneously served as Commander of the Joint

Logistics Command, Combined Joint Task Force 76, and was responsible for logistical support to Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors in Afghanistan. He has also served in numerous staff positions to include Chief, Initiatives Group, and later as Chief, Focused Logistics in the Force Development Directorate of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and Director for Strategy and Integration in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics at the Pentagon.

LTG Wyche began his career in the enlisted ranks and achieved the rank of Sergeant while serving as a Calvary Scout Leader. LTG Wyche received his commission as a Quartermaster officer from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi ROTC and graduated in 1983, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration. He later earned Masters’ degrees in Logis-

tics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

His awards and decorations include: the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Legion of Merit Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star Medal; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters; Joint Service Achievement Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He also has earned the Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge.

Clean and Green

Spring Cleaning, De-Cluttering and Recycling

by Ruby McCartney Spring has sprung and now it is time to begin your spring cleaning and de-cluttering. I ask that you remember to recycle when doing this process. Many items that people want to clear out when spring cleaning and de-cluttering can be recycled at the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center (ALRC), a division of KALB, located at 15896 Lucas Ferry Road. On the other hand, many items that people think can be recycled are not accepted at our facility. So I am going to give you a few pointers.

Those huge stacks of junk mail, magazines and newspapers that have been sitting around are a good place to start.

Those along with any paper or hardback books can be recycled.

One common question is “ Do you accept encyclopedias?” and the answer is yes. So if you have old stacks of those sitting around, you can clear up some storage room by recycling those at your local recycling center.

Electronics that are broken, worn out or are no longer used can all be recycled at ALRC. Unfortunately we do have to charge a small fee of $10.00 for any television; however, you know it is being disposed of in the proper manner. Our electronics are sent to a company that carries all the proper certifications to recycle electronics.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer and you have used motor oil sitting around from servicing your lawnmowers or vehicles, you can bring that used motor oil to the ALRC to be recycled.

Plastic is where it gets a little more complicated.

If you have old plastic buckets or containers sitting around, you can bring those to ALRC. However, if you have old plastic lawn furniture, kids toys, hose pipes, PVC piping or any of these type items, they need to be put in the trash or taken to the transfer station because we cannot recycle them. The key word to plastic that is recycled

Now roll up your sleeves and get to spring cleaning and RECYCLING.

Latex paint can be disposed of by pouring the paint into a cardboard box lined with a plastic bag so that it can dry more quickly. To speed up the drying process, add kitty litter, shredded paper, or sawdust to the paint. You can also purchase a product specifically for drying paint at most home improvement stores. Once the paint is dry, it can be placed in the regular trash. Recycle the can.

at Athens-Limestone Recycling Center is “CONTAINER.” If you have a collection of plastic grocery bags, they can also be brought to ALRC but they must be clean and dry. However, if you have old plastic bags that had mulch, sand, potting soil or food in them, they need to be placed in the trash.

Glass bottles and jars can also be recycled at ALRC, even if they are broken. We cannot accept window glass or windshields.

This plaque restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. CAD and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are not the same. CAD is a type of CVD. CAD is the leading cause of death around the world, (about 13.2% in 2012,) including about 380,000 Americans every year.

Major Risk Factors for CAD include the following: •Elevated blood cholesterol levels. Optimal levels are LDL levels less than 100, HDL levels greater than 60 and total cholesterol level below 200.

•Hypertension. The constant force of elevated blood pressure against the heart blood vessels. High readings are systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher over days of repeated measurements.

The “Just For Me” Annual Dance Recital Honoring Dorothy The Dinosaur Is Coming June 6th

calling to dance as a child of 10, is now in her ‘60s, and she is still going strong. However, her dances are dedicated to the glory of God, and most recently she has developed an approach to dance that is just for special needs kids and adults. She has students with all kinds of challenges; Downs, Asperger’s, Autism, and the aftermath of physical and chemical brain trauma.

This year’s recital theme is a pajama birthday party in honor of Dorothy the Dinosaur.

The studio is going to be decorated like a back yard, and will sport a white picket fence, butterflies, flowers, and perhaps some surprises. The kids will wear pajamas for their costumes for the “Dorothy Dance,” and ALL children are

encouraged to wear pajamas to the event. The recital will also be interactive, that is, all kids who are attending the recital as guests will be invited at times to participate with the kids who are performing. No previous dance experience required!

For those of you who are not familiar with Dorothy the Dinosaur, she showed up as a kids’ show character almost 20 years ago. As you can see from the invitation, Dorothy fancies herself a ballerina. She also is permanently five years old. “Celebrating” Dorothy’s birthday is going to be the perfect venue for the dancers to “strut their stuff,” and each member of Miss Fran’s dance troupe will have a solo.

Sarah Valenzuela and Laikan Wolanzyk are the two young women who help Miss Fran, and she is quick to note that

she couldn’t do what she does at Just For Me without them.

The details of the interactive venue are still being hammered out, but will include “the wiggles,” (the kids’ favorite), froggie jumps, and rabbit hops as part of the warm up. Four years ago, when Miss Fran first began to put together the Just For Me dance school, she sought the help of educational professionals whose life’s work is to teach special needs children. She reached out to the Athens Public Schools, and received a great deal of help from the Special Education Department. “They hammered out the parameters and definitions, and I learned a lot,” she told me. Francita began through trial and error to find out what her students were capable of, and “Just For Me” began to take shape.

last year’s recital, and it was truly inspiring. Earlier this month, Miss Fran’s adult student, Sheri Magnusson danced a solo performance at the Relay for Life fundraiser held at the Sportsplex. Sheri was the only four decade cancer survivor at the event, having triumphed over leukemia as a child, and “She danced beautifully,” Miss Fran said, and added, “I was so proud of her.” Miss Fran stood down in front of the stage and coached, as she always does, by “mirroring” the choreography while Sheri danced.

For this year’s June 6th performance, “The local schools have posted the invitation for the recital on their website, and the plan is for them to print them out, personalize them, and give them to the kids,” Fran said.

Fran has a dream, and that is that the Just For Me school

of dance grow, and thus better serve the special needs community of Athens Limestone County. Stated a different way, she wants to “expand Just For Me’s outreach.” One of the things that gives her great satisfaction after her hard work and long hours is watching her students grow in their dance skills, as well as personally.

“We are going to celebrate their accomplishments, and invite the community to join us,” she said.

“Come on out and see what is possible,” says Fran. And, she added, “Come see and then let your child experience the joy of dancing.” That is an invitation I am planning on accepting, and hope you will, too.

Jessica Aaron’s 25th Year With The Athens Swim Team

virtually toss in the pool, and who would naturally do what all babies do inside their mommas, that is, swim effortlessly. That is not quite what happened with Jessica, but she started taking swim lessons at the old Athens City pool at the tender age of 3, and her former coach, Robin Holland, could already tell that Jessica was going to be a force to be reckoned with in the water.

Twenty five years ago, when Jessica first “jumped in,” the city swim team was known as “Neptune’s Crew,” and she started competing with them at the age of 7. For the next 8 years, she was a fierce contender, racking up a total of 11 gold medals for our state, and setting several records.

She took 3 triple golds at the ages of 10, 12, and 14. Her best event was breast stroke, followed by back stroke, and then freestyle.

However, her dad, James, (himself a Tennessee Hall of Fame athlete,) said that “she always swam hardest when she was swimming for others.” Put her on a relay team, and she would swim her heart out. That “heart” drove her to then begin coaching at the age of 16, and she has been the head

coach of the Athens Gators since 2005. Mind you, in addition to coaching, this woman works nights at the Huntsville Hospital ER as a nurse practitioner, and often goes to work with the kids at the pool before she goes home to get some sleep.

Robin told me, “the name Aaron is now synonymous with the Athens Swim Team,” as several of Jessica’s siblings followed in her footsteps, and one broke her state records. Robin had more to say. “She had ability; that was obvious from the beginning. She also had focus, and worked hard. When I told kids to go swim laps, she always did it. So, what about this team that Jessica coaches? They are one of the “winning-est” swim teams in the Alabama Parks and Rec system, and from May 18th through May 22nd, they are going to be conducting their annual Swim Clinic. If you have a child

Jessica coaching her crew who is interested in becoming a member of the Athens Swim Team, for $35, your child can come and swim for the week under the watchful eye of the coach to ascertain their ability, give them tips, and help them improve. The minimum requirement is being able to swim at least 25 yards without touching bottom. At the end of the week, depending on their age and performance, they are assigned to 4 competitive groups.

The Minnows are mostly for swimmers 8 and under, Dolphins are 9 and 10 year olds, Stingrays are generally 11, (and begin doing timed laps), and the Sharks are from 11-12, and go to 18.

There are several advantages to being a member of the Athens Swim Team, the Aarons told me. “It’s local, very family oriented, and several kids of several ages can be at the same sport at the same time.” So, if you have a “water baby,” or just want to see to it that your children are “water proof,” put them under the capable coaching and tutelage of Jessica Aaron, and when you do, be sure to congratulate her on 25 years of making Athens a better place to live.

Center for Lifelong Learning - 121 South Marion Street, Athens, AL 35611 - 256-233-8262 Today’s article is a hodgepodge. According to the MerriamWebster dictionary, a hodgepodge is mixture of things. At the Center for Lifelong Learning, this month is a mixture of lots of things.

On Monday, May 11, the music program hosted its spring recital. The music was varied and the students were great. This summer, the Center will continue music lessons with two programs. The first is a violin and beginner piano program taught

by Kristi Coughlin.

Lessons will be June 15-July 30 and are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00pm. There are two group lessons for beginners on Thursdays - Discovering Violin I for inexperienced beginner (less than six months practice) and Discovering Violin II for beginners. The second music program is a Rhythm Camp taught by Barry Kay. Barry will teach the basics of guitar, bass, percussion, and keyboard, as well as how these instruments work together to make rhythm and lay the foundation for music. On Tuesday, May 26, the Center will host a farewell reception for Dr. Diane Sauers, director of the Center. The reception is scheduled from 2:00 to 4:00pm and will be held in the Center located at 121 South Marion Street. Dr. Sauers has been with the Center since it opened in 2011. As director, she has worked with many community groups in our area, including the Decatur Civic Chorus. Stop by to tell her how much she will be missed.

Since we are talking about camps, there are more camps on our website. We have a couple of art camps – Art Explorers Camp uses a variety of mediums and Painting Fun is a different painting every day. We also have a Drama Camp – Wind in the Willows for 8 to 15 year olds. We will aslo be offering the Super Sitter Course again for ages 11-15 who are looking to become exceptional babysitters.

I am sure you have noticed that the weather is getting hot. At Square Clock Coffee they are selling smoothies for the summer, along with iced teas and lemonade. They have also just begun to serve cakes and cupcakes. Their salad menus are light and filling and just the thing for a nice summer lunch. They also have sandwiches and

soups for hearty appetites. Remember, we have free Wi-Fi and laptops are available for use.

For those of you who want to go to the Tennessee Aquarium with us, the deadline for registering is June 1. That is just a few days away. The trip is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16. We will leave the Center at 8:00am and return about 6:00pm. This trip includes entry fees, lunch, and transportation. There is an option for a back stage pass for those who might like to see what happens behind the scenes at the Aquarium. The base fee is $85. The backstage pass is $15. As a society, we have made “Life” in itself so demanding, and when we add to it the stresses, woes, and requirements of the workplace, what an equation we have found ourselves trying to solve!

Ever heard the phrase, Work, Life, Balance?

Employers across the nation are recognizing that in order for employees to be successful at carrying out the tasks and responsibilities required by the job, there has to be some “give” or flexibility.

I applaud the employers who not only put this on paper in their mission statements, but really see the value in putting this into action for the betterment of their employees.

Knowing that if you need to take off for an hour here or there to manage family situations, or even work from home for the day and still have a place of employment, gives one peace of mind and a sense of relief. But then there are the situations where individuals may not have an employer or a position where this is feasible.

What happens then, and how does one make it work for self, family, and home life? Unfortunately, we have all heard and most likely know someone who has experienced a panic attack, stroke, mental breakdown or even a heart attack- all because of the stresses of trying to do too much around work, family, and personal obligations, and

having no visible end in sight.

Without a doubt, I truly believe that we were put on this earth

by God to serve, but service requires truly being available, intentional and focused on the task. If you are not mentally and physically available, then your service is for what? Daily we get up and begin with broken down spirits, mental exhaustion, health issues, relationship problems… yes, you know what I am talking about, but we just keep on going.

Imagine boarding a train, and after being on the train for a

while, the speed picks up and then gradually starts to increase a little faster, and then even faster.

There is no way to slow it down, and you see it is headed for a derailment.

Do you jump, or do you derail? As you are deciding what do, realize that yes, we have to work for financial stability, but if I am not balanced and relieved of some of the stresses of work and life, I won’t be at work. I won’t “Be” at all!

Horse Whispering

Let’s Dance

by Deb Kitchenmaster “Grandma, I’m on student council at my school, (age 7; first grade,) and we are planning a dance for our grandparents. Will you come and dance with me?” How precious! With the kindness of amazing people in my life and the effortless re-scheduling that took place, Southwest wings flew me from Nashville, TN, to Denver, CO, simply to dance.

And dance we did- one solid hour of dancing! We danced the chicken dance, YMCA, slow dance (Grandson Aren made it easy to follow), Hokey Pokey, even the Macarena. What fun we had!

I want to thank Madison Elementary School, of Colorado Springs, CO, for the dance of knowledge and relationship. What a joy to see the elders and the youngsters being with each other, laughing, dancing and sweating.

The horses in our lives ask us the same question: “Want to come and dance?” The four beat of

the walk or gallop. The two beat of a trot. The three beat of the canter.

Let’s dance!

Aren enjoys being Spiderman. He enjoys dressing up by wearing a suit.

Whether he’s Spiderman or in a suit, he remains ‘Aren.’

Whether you ride English, Western, or bareback, your horse remains an energy field of rhythm. To connect with this rhythm in an unforced way, it takes knowledge, experience, showing up, sensitivity, timing, balance, and focus to enjoy a beautiful dance. The satisfaction of unity, oneness and harmony is rewarding to us as we interact with the horses and human beings in our lives. There will remain place and space for trouble-shooting, for re-considering, for understanding, but this is worth the effort and priority, because life is so much more enjoyable when we partner! When we connect, whether in a corral, a classroom, or in

The key word is HEALTHY. Speaking from my own arena of life, I have eye-witnessed how hurting people hurt people. Hurts can come inside a family unit, in the streets, in schools, in churches, in small interest groups, and in your own neighborhoods. Do you dance when you’re hurt?

No, you sit this one out, because you’re bruised, sore, lame, broken, or limping. These are not dancing feet.

How many horses have suffered because they didn’t perform like we needed them to? Didn’t run fast enough? Didn’t run the barrels with record-breaking time?

Didn’t cross the water out on the trails and caused us to be embarrassed?

Wouldn’t load in the horse trailer, and our leadership was questioned by those watching?

Why Remember Memorial Day?

That is a question that one would perhaps expect from a generation that now looks at a picture of Adolph Hitler and thinks he was an actor, or from my generation, when 40 plus years ago, some of us wanted to overthrow the government.

However, it was former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, who fought in the Civil War and died in 1935, that had that question posed to him by a young man back in 1884. Here, in part, was his response, delivered at a Memorial Day speech to a New Hampshire Army Unit :

“So to the indifferent inquirer who asks why Memorial Day is still kept up we may answer, it celebrates and solemnly reaffirms from year to year a national act of enthusiasm and faith. It embodies in the most impressive form our belief that to act with enthusiam and faith is the condition of acting greatly.

To fight out a war, you must believe something and want something with all your might. So must you do to carry anything else to an end worth reaching. More than that, you must be willing to commit yourself to a course, perhpas a long and hard one, without being able to foresee exactly where you will come out. All that is required of you is that you should go somewhither as hard as ever you can. The rest belongs to fate. One may fall-at the beginning of the charge or at the top of the earthworks; but in no other way can he reach the rewards of victory.”

National Trauma Awareness Month

by Rachel Clark, RN, BSN The American Trauma Society (ATS) and the Society of Trauma Nurses recognize the month of May as National Trauma Awareness Month.

This year’s slogan is “3D Trauma Prevention,” focusing on 3 major contributors to motor vehicle accidents (MVA): Drugs/ Drinking, Distraction, and Drowsiness.

According to the ATS website, there were 32,000 fatalities and 2.3 million injuries from MVAs in 2013 alone. Of those, 31% were linked to an alcohol-impaired driver and another 18% were linked to a distracted driver.

•In 2009, 18% of fatally injured drivers tested positive for at least one illicit, prescription, or over-the-counter drug.

Some danger signals include: •Having trouble keeping your eyes open and focused •Inability to keep head up •Daydreaming or wandering, disconnected thoughts •Frequent yawning or rubbing eyes repeatedly •Drifting from your lane or tailgating •Missing signs or driving

•Take a power nap.

Pull off the road in a safe, well-lit area such as a parking lot or rest area.

•Schedule breaks every 4 hours or 100 miles.
