Weird Story Time

Don’t hold me to the details because I’m going from memory that dates a good while back, but I remember hearing about a missionary and his wife who went to a very remote location to reach out to a tribe who were quite savage. The short version is that they got separated and she was captured. Did I say that they were extremely savage?

You can use your imagination as to what happened next.

In extreme despair, the missionary left the area and struggled with his relationship with Yah for years. As he healed, he felt Yah directing him to return to the people that he originally had felt called to. It was a struggle, but he finally went. When he got there, he found them surprisingly open to the gospel. He asked them

what had changed, and they shocked him with their answer.

They explained that Yeshua was in his wife and was now within them. I was relating this story to a friend and he got this strange look on his face. “So that’s what happened!” he exclaimed. Then he proceeded to tell me a story of a missionary couple whose child was taken in the same way. They went through the same brokenheartedness and despair. And they were eventually directed

by Yah back to the perpetrators who stated that they knew Yeshua and that they were waiting to be taught more.

Fast forward to when a friend of mine was working in Iraq and became acquainted with some Ugandans. They enjoyed eating with their fingers and explained

that they could feel the spirit(s) that were left in the food by the preparers. In fact, that is how the president of their country is protected from poisoning; the official tester doesn’t even have to taste it but can feel the vibes.

It may be that it is better to go hungry than to ingest the spirits placed in food by people who don’t have a good heart. Proverbs 17:1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife (KJV). But the corollary is that you can serve up the heart of Yah without ever saying a word. The next time that you cook, or even deliver food, think and pray about what is flowing through your hands into the food. You can bless your enemies in more than one way by feeding them.

Born in North Korea in 1993, Yeonmi Park, along with her mother, escaped at the age of 13 on foot across a frozen river into China. What was her motivation? To get to someplace where there was actual physical light and food. She describes North Korea as the darkest place on earth, and she is not exaggerating.

Upon arriving in China, she and her mother were sold into slavery and endured two years of rape.

Her mother tried to protect her daughter by saying, “She is only a child; take me.” They came to the place where the cost of freedom once again would be unspeakably high; they walked across the Gobe Desert in China into Mongolia, and when Chinese police threatened to take them back, they produced both knives and poison and stated, “We would rather die than go back.” Miraculously, they made it to the South Korean Embassy and were granted asylum.

They lived in South Korea for a few years, were reunited with Yeomni’s older sister, and began to systematically expose the North Korean regime.

There are no words, literally, to describe what Yeomni used to not know.

Does that sound confusing? Can you imagine growing up in a culture where there is no word in your language for “love”?

When I say, “Vote for Yeonmi Park,” I am not suggesting that she is currently running for political office, but if she were in a few years, I would vote for her. I think I’d rather wait until she turns 35, but for now, she is holding her own taking on Americans who believe America is the worst country on earth. What she also

does is doggedly refuse to be a victim when she could probably camp out indefinitely in a “safe space” on any American college campus. Yeonmi is a passionate defender of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and says, simply, “If people in North Korea had guns, there would be no dictatorship.” She is actually glad she was born in North Korea, because she will never take for granted what she has now, and what she has now is a loving husband, a son, a best-selling book, a TED talk, a YouTube channel, and most importantly, her freedom.

by Danny Barksdale My number one goal is serving the people of District 2. I believe true leadership serves the people instead of its own interests. Far too often the people are overlooked in the political landscape.

Politicians are more interested in un-elected bureaucrats, special interest groups, and big business than they are in serving the average citizens they are supposed to represent. I am not that kind of candidate and never will be.

I want to help Limestone County be a safe, successful, and strong community moving forward. It was an honor for me to serve my country in the U.S. Army, and if elected I will bring that same commitment of honor, service, and duty to the Limestone County Commission. That is, and always will be, my commitment to you. “Road Commissioner�

The position of "Road Commissioner" has changed over the years. We have, and rightly so, dropped the "Road" part of the title. Maintaining the roads is only a part of what our County Commissioners do.

They now manage $40 million in revenue and a $15 million general fund budget.

They allocate funds for each county department and plan for future growth and services.

While the administrative function of county government is not as obvious to us in our daily lives as the current condition of our roads, they are just as critical to the future growth, development, and quality of life to Limestone County citizens.

What is often overlooked is

that poor management today equals worse roads and worse problems for the future.

A County Commissioner should not be elected based only on road work. Management skills, fiscal responsibility, and a heart to serve the people are just as important.

A good example of this is the County's purchase of unnecessary property like the L&S Shopping Center, and expensive building projects like the Event Center. This money could have and should have been used for roads, or to prepare for future growth.

Unnecessary spending has landed Limestone County over $14 million in debt, and in a poor position for future growth.

As we move forward, Limestone County will be facing a whole new set of problems with Huntsville moving into Limestone County, such as additional infrastructure needs and issues related to population growth. It is easy to focus too much on the condition of our roads right now, and not enough on the future.

We should not lose sight of the bigger picture. Additional needs will put more

stress on the county budget.

Our County Commission will need to look for ways to cut costs, spend wisely, and eliminate waste. There is not a government entity in the world that does not have waste, and Limestone County is no exception.

A good steward of taxpayer funds means that an elected official is as frugal with government money as they are with their own. Too often, it is forgotten that county tax money comes from the single mom working hard to put food on the table, the farmer working 15 hour days, and the factory worker that is looking for overtime just to make ends meet. Unlike government, they must cut costs, spend wisely, and eliminate waste. It is time that government learned from their example. If Limestone County manages their spending wisely, there will be no need for County debt and there will be no need to raise taxes. That should be our goal.

This would allow working men and women the chance to attend and address the commission without being forced to take time off from their jobs.

Where I Stand On Taxes The people of Limestone County are taxed enough! I am a strong fiscal conservative, who believes in cutting wasteful spending and balancing the budget instead of

raising taxes. I pledge to be a voice for fiscal responsibly on the County Commission.

I firmly believe that the government does not need more of your money, but rather, they need to start spending the money they have wisely.

Schools And Education There is nothing more important to me than our children's future. As a husband and father, I know how critical our local schools and teachers really are. I believe we need to build a strong foundation for the future as our community continues to grow.

If elected to the Limestone County Commission, I will listen to parent s and teachers about the needs our schools are facing. Whether interacting with the Limestone County School Board, or helping with a special project, I will be available for the families of our community, and I humbly ask for your vote on November 3.

If Voting Becomes Violent

In just a few days, we are going to cast our ballot for who will become the 46th President of the United States.

If certain groups have their way, November 3rd could potentially be a day when blood could be shed, the fourth such day in my own life. The other three were during the years I lived and worked in Iraq, when I watched Iraqis doggedly defy Al-Zarqawi, head of Al-Qaeda, who had promised a blood bath. Our soldiers promised to protect them, and they did. Iraqis headed to the polls, voted, had their fingers dyed with purple dye, and emerged triumphant.

Some bought their coffins for the occasion in case that’s where they ended up as a result of making a choice, and over 40 were killed. It’s

a day I’ll never forget, one of many that reminded me of the things I used to take for granted as an American.

Unfortunately, there have been several voting days in America in years past that have been marred by bloodshed, one of the most notable being the Colfax Massacre in 1873.

A Republican had been elected as governor of Louisiana, and somewhere between 62 and 150 people were killed while protecting the results of that vote.

So, what kinds of statutes are in place to protect us should ne’er-dowells decide that the only thing that makes sense is to prevent people from arriving at the polls, peaceably waiting six feet apart, entering, voting, and then exiting

with a triumphant grin?

Plenty, it turns out.

In most cities, the first group of responders when there is civil unrest is the police, and that should be enough.

Governors have the right to call out the National Guard to support the police in times of disaster or riots, and as someone who saw the relief of Iraqis seeing that Americans were ready to protect them, I personally would not mind at all if there were both a law enforcement presence as well as the Guard presence at the polls on Voting Day. Some have said that this would be an “expression of suppression,” and I say, having them present would send a strong message that the rights of all Americans to vote shall be protected.

Active military members and members of the Reserves of any branch are not generally called upon as part of this type of peace-keeping mission, as they are more focused on defending us in wars which are formally declared and fought on foreign soil.

But, there is a rather odd and obscure piece of legislation called the Insurrection Act. The president has the authority under the Insurrection Act of 1807 to send active-duty military to states that are unable or unwilling to quell an insurrection or are refusing to obey federal law.

Under the law, the president can activate troops and override a governor’s approval as long as certain conditions are met, such as if the violence is interfering with the execution of laws

there. The Insurrection Act was what JFK used to send troops to the University of Alabama when Governor Wallace famously stood in the doorway to prevent it from being desegregated. It would have been the Insurrection Act that President Trump could have legally used to send troops to Portland, OR, earlier this summer.

My prayer is that peace and cooler heads will prevail before, during, and after November 3rd. And, I think it is wise this Election Day to be more situationally aware than normal.

Use your head, stay cool and calm, ignore hecklers, go to the polls in groups, and if possible, vote during daylight.

But, settle it like an Iraqi in January of 2005 and vote, even if it costs you everything.

Come Hear The Thom Mathews Guitar Concert And Clinic At High Cotton Arts On October 24th

by Garth Lovvorn I like notes. I like to hear lots of notes played in interesting patterns whether it be dynamic scalar picking runs, sweep picked arpeggios, tapped notes in fluid shapes, smooth legato phrases, staccato notes, bended notes, divebombed notes, and every now and then, I even like slow notes. The bottom line is that I like notes played in melodious and soul shaking sequences that stick in my head and move me to challenge my imagination.

I like rock, heavy metal, jazz, classical, R&B, and country notes. If there is a way that someone can grab a guitar and play notes that make me smile, then I authorize those people to keep on creating the notes that they are passionate about.

This brings me to the reason that I want to talk about a good friend of mine named Thom Mathews who like me also likes notes. Thom just happens to be on a level of playing notes that raises the bar

quite high. After spending literally thousands of hours honing his guitar skills, he has risen to the level of a bona fide guitar shredder.

While he is quite humble about his abilities, I will take the liberty of boasting in his stead. Thom, who was raised in the Mobile area of Alabama, grew up listening to the same types of musicians that I did. He is deep into bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and solo guitar based artists such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai. We were able to connect many years ago (1999 – ish) when my previous band, Fleshtized, was doing some gigs along the Gulf Coast.

A mutual friend of ours told me that he had a friend named Thom Mathews who was an amazing guitar player, and he introduced us. We talked for a while and I knew by the things that he told me about his style and the players he was in to, that he was definitely someone who would be making waves in the music

scene one day.

A few years later in the mid-2000s, Thom moved to Huntsville and got involved with the local music scene, which was going through a major boom phase. Gigs were plentiful, bands were releasing albums and getting recording deals, and hitting the road. Thom and I had the opportunity to jam together a few times, and we hit it off really well as musicians and friends.

As Thom’s guitar playing abilities were gaining noto-

riety, he was picked up by an independent label who releasded his first solo album back in 2008 entitled, Mindcraft. This album is a full-on shred-metal affair that combines the influences of progressive metal bands such as Cynic and Dream Theatre along with the 80’s guitar hero phenom set, such as Marty Friedman and George Lynch. It makes for an intense listening experience to say the least; however, it is quite accessible for all fans of true unflitered guitar action.

The pressing sold out and in 2011, Mathews released his second solo album, Entrancing the Populace, both of which can be heard by doing a keyword search on YouTube.

Currently, Thom is lead guitarist and vocalist with R.M.S. which stands for Riley, Mathews, and Strandquest. R.M.S. is an Atlantabased band which includes Mathews, Angie Riley (bass, vocals), and Dave Strandquest (drums). They specialize in writing music that is very well rooted in the glory days of metal's

old guard. They also function as Atlanta’s premiere heavy metal cover band.

They entertain audiences by digging deep into the vault where you are as likely to hear them belt out Bang Tango and Guns N' Roses tunes as you are songs by Megadeth or Motorhead.

Now that you know more about Thom Mathews and his guitar wielding abilities, I am asking you to come see him in person at the High Cotton Center on 103 W. Washington Street in Athens. The show will be taking place on October 24 at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and it is for all ages. It is requested that you wear a mask during the event, and we will be practicing social distancing. There will be a time to hear him run through a few songs that will display his wide arsenal of techniques, and there will be a question and answer session to follow. Please come and join us as this will be a family-friendly event with the budding shredder and guitar afficianado in mind.

Mayor Ronnie came into his office and asked if I was familiar with the movie, A League Of Their Own. I quickly responded with singing him the first few lines of the theme song: Batter up! Hear that call!

The time has come for one and all To play ball.

“Oh, I guess you really do know it,” said the mayor as I proceeded to tell him it is one of my all-time faves when it comes to illustrating team building, second chances, leadership, having a goal, being a part of something greater than yourself, and I could have gone on and on.

We laughed as we talked about scenes and characters that illustrate our points still to this day.

“The reason why I am asking,” said the mayor, “is that I watched the MLB game yesterday, and they have put cutouts of people up in the stands. I replied, “Whoever thought of that was a genius. Baseball players don’t just play for themselves, they play for the fans, and they need the presence and energy

of the fans in order to play their best. Baseball is about way more than baseball, if that makes any sense. It is more than just the “Great American Pastime.’” He agreed and continued, “It was World War II, the guys were all overseas fighting the war, and people back home really needed baseball to continue. It was almost like it was part of the war effort.”

Mayor Ronnie also talked about the fact that legendary song writer and musician John Prine had finally succumbed to cancer. “He had much of his jaw removed,” said the mayor, “and the guy would continue to perform until he just about collapsed.” He then played me one of Prine’s signature songs, a ballad called “Hello, In There.” It is about loneliness, especially amongst the elderly, and even more so in these strange times.

We finished our time with Mayor Ronnie telling me about the iron casket from the early 19th century that had been found at the site of the new retail project that is being built at the bottom of Lindsay Lane South and Huntsville BrownsFerry Road. “We thought there were only about 4 graves there,” said the

mayor. Turns out, there are close to 16, many of whom were infants.

The people who deal with these things have been treating the situation with the utmost of care, and the casket and remains are going to be moved and re-interred.

“In a couple of weeks we are going to be able to announce the name of the project,” he said. It was getting close to “that time,” so we prayed, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

We Need God

This has been an odd and strange year to say the least and before we know it, good ole 2021 will be knocking on the doors.

The way we live life has been challenged, and our way of life has had to be reimagined. What was normal a year ago is beyond comprehension today. To say the least, we have had to be adaptable in order to maintain our sanity.

We need to be asking ourselves, what can we learn the most from this year?

Think about the various industries that needed to come up with new ways of doing business in order to survive. We see the American dream is still viable, it is still alive, but people need to be willing to pay the price. Not everyone is willing to pay this price, and this is because we have groomed an entire generation to believe they deserve recognition and reward for merely showing up. Yes, the dreaded participation trophy.

If you are not careful, it is easy to get sucked into the ideology of trying not to offend someone else. We get so inundated with this thought process by the “politically correct” crowd, that before you know it, your entire way of thinking has been changed. There was a time in our society when men were men and women were women. Now we live in a world of confusion in which people can be whatever or whomever they think they are.

What a travesty there is being taught in our public schools with the liberal agenda eroding away our great country. I am proud to be an American; and we need more people to take a stand. We are in danger of losing our great country, and we are just a few short weeks away from a turning point in our country. I do not believe the Republican Party can save us; nor do I believe the Democratic Party can save us.

If we want to see change in America, it is going to take our entire nation turning back to God. The morality of our country has fallen greatly, and we cannot even blush at our country’s sin. I saw a headline the other day that male frontal nudity is appearing more on screen.

Think back to the days of Elvis Presley and his swinging hips and flash forward to today’s society. We cannot even blush at our own country’s immorality. We do not need a political party to bring our country back from the depths of Hell -- we need God. Many Bible-believing Christians oftentimes quote 2 Chronicles 7:14 concerning the children of Israel and the God of

the Bible. However, I believe a more fitting scripture for the United States is found in Jeremiah 18:8, “If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.”

If you ask me, this is a powerful scripture found in God’s Word and should be the rallying cry for the world we live in.

I am amazed we have a society of people who speak loudly and clearly for the 200,000+ people who have died from COVID-19; but these same people are quiet when it comes to the nearly 1,000,000 babies who will be murdered

this year in their mother’s womb. If you want to talk about senseless deaths, let us not forget about Roe V. Wade and the innocent lives being killed every day. We cannot even blush at our own country’s immorality.

Look at what this concept has gotten us into. Something is going to have to change, and that something is the way we view

Museum Committee Seeks Entrants For Veterans Day Parade

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum A committee made up of members from the Alabama Veterans Museum, local service organizations, and volunteers is working to make this the most memorable Veterans Day parade yet. With many Veterans Day activities being canceled, the committee feels it is more important than ever to ensure the Veterans Day parade is bigger and better than ever before. We are seeking marching bands, floats, historic vehicles, small groups, big groups, and plenty of spectators. It is our way to say a heartfelt “Thank you” and honor and recognize all veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Thank you for the sacrifices you made and make every day to secure our freedoms. It has been a very unusual

six months all over the country to say the least, and here at the Veterans Museum is no exception.

We would like to bring a little normalcy back to our area, and what better way than a parade. We will not have a typical Grand Marshall, but will focus on our Korean veterans, although all veterans are welcome to participate.

Originally known as Armistice Day, now Veterans Day, it signaled the official end to WWI, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Armed Forces Day, also in May, honors those members currently serving.

The parade will be held on Saturday, Nov 7 at 11:00 a.m. We are happy to have the American Association of Retired

Persons (AARP) sponsor once again this year.

High School Sports Enter Post-Seasons Despite Pre-Season COVID Concerns

With all the worries going into this year about high school sports being played at all, it may come as a surprise to some that local teams are on the verge of winding down their regular fall seasons and preparing to start post-season play.

Volleyball area tournaments began earlier this week (we’ll have those results in next month’s column) and it actually feels a little like the “real normal.”Athletes, coaches, and fans have had to approach things a little differently; but at least we’re getting our sports, and I guess that’s a win in itself. Here are local football and volleyball highlights by school: Ardmore The varsity and JV volleyball teams swept Mae Jemison, Lee, Clements, and St. John Paul II. The JV and middle school Lady Tigers took the Limestone County tournament championships with wins against East Limestone.

Athens Bible The varsity volleyball team turned back Falkville and Whitesburg Christian.

Athens High On the gridiron, the Golden Eagles defeated Hartselle (19-7) and Buckhorn (47-14). The Lady Golden Eagles beat Boaz, Brewer, Elkmont, Briarwood Christian, Hatton, West Limestone, and East Limestone in volleyball

On behalf of the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Commission and staff, I would like to say a heartfelt, “Thank You,” to our community for the support that we have continued to receive throughout this very difficult and unprecedented year. I have mentioned over and over in previous articles how we have had to adjust, move some events forward, and cancel others over the last seven months. But in spite of all of that, you as a community have shown up and shown out in support of our organization in many different ways.

One way that you have supported KALB is through our annual membership drive.

We made some changes to our membership pricing and added different levels of membership for individuals/

families and for businesses/ industries. Despite this being a tough year financially for many families and businesses, we had an overwhelming response to our drive. We raised over $10,000 from this effort and for that we are truly grateful to each of you who supported us.

One of the membership “perks” that we offered this year were free duck entries in our Wacky Quacky Ducky Derby, with the number of entries received corresponding

to the level of membership.

Several of our members were winners this year as a result of their free duck entries!

Speaking of the Ducky Derby, this event is another way that you as a community supported the work of KALB. The $2,000 American Leakless Company Grand Prize Winners -- Amy and Chris Looney especially since the Fiddlers Convention was canceled this year, because we always adopt out a great number of ducks onsite at Fiddlers.

There ended up being over 2,200 ducks total in the race, which is more than we have ever raced before! The fundraiser brought in over $6,000 for KALB, and we are so appreciative of everyone who adopted ducks this year.

We are also very thankful for our volunteers that helped out during the derby. We had a record number of volunteers this year that gave of their time to help ensure that this was a successful event. A special thank you goes out to Gerry and Marilyn Ford, Barbara Harrison, and Martha Long, who went the extra mile to make sure that the duck trap was ready and working, and that the spillway coming from the duck pond was clean and race ready.

Leaps of Faith

In my last article, I talked a little bit about deciding on what to let go of in my life, and this is my last week at my traditional 9-5 job; and yes, I am scared to death. Even though I am scared to make this jump, I am overwhelmed with excitement and the sense of God’s hand in my life. My husband and I have been faithfully in prayer about what direction to steer our life. We feel strongly that God has lead us to this point in our lives, and we are trying faithfully to walk on the water with him.

As a woman in today’s society, I feel immense pressure from the world to be career minded, keep my house in tiptop shape, raise the best children, always be my best…but in reality, I am not able to be everything for everyone. I knew that if I stayed on the path I was on, something would not get my absolute best. I had to make a choice.

My husband and I sat down last year and decided what was most important in this world for us. We came to the conclusion that we wanted to focus on family. Focus on each other and adoption. Focus on our relationship with Christ and helping bring others to know his love. We weren’t focused on growing our portfolio or moving into a much larger house in two years. We wanted to focus on family and Christ. This lead to the decision for me to quit my fulltime job and focus on the business we have started and on adopting a child into

We understand that not everyone has to quit their job to be focused on family. This was just the best decision for our family. While on vacation, I bought a framed print that says: “The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your home.” (Harold B. Lee) Reading this quote helped seal the decision in our minds for me to step down from the job I had held for our entire marriage. We are continually asking for prayers for guidance and wisdom as we step out of the boat and onto the water to follow Christ.

I am also hoping this newfound focus on family will help me become more focused on my health again. I have not been focused on eating healthy at all, you guys. I mean, if something looks good, I’ve been eating it. But with this newfound focus on family, I have a renewed sense of wanting to be healthy. This week’s recipe is a delicious onepot dish that is perfect for families or just the two of you. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

These commandment that I give you today are to be on your hearts.

Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Ingredients: 2 lbs. chicken breast, boneless and skinless ¼ tsp cumin ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp red chili pepper flakes 2 cups diced grape or Roma tomatoes ½ cup onion 1/3 cup chopped jalapeno ½ fresh chopped cilantro ½ lime, juiced 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: Preheat oven to 400⁰F. Chop chicken breasts into small pieces.

In a bowl, combine tomato, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and lime juice with ¼ teaspoon salt.

Arrange the chicken pieces flat in a large 9x13 baking dish and season evenly with cumin, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Give a quick stir to combine chicken evenly with seasoning. Cover chicken pieces with diced tomatoes, onion,

jalapeno, and then top with shredded mozzarella.

Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink. Garnish the salsa fresca chicken with more chopped cilantro and serve with your favorite side dish like rice, cauliflower rice, grilled veggies, or whole wheat tortillas.

The Money Tree

Making money is not taught in schools. It is not taught in colleges. It is not often talked about in families. As a former banker, my job was to make sense of people’s finances and assets. Part of that job is asking the difficult questions. I might ask you why your account keeps overdrawing, and it turns out that pesky auto loan is just a little too high. A penny saved is a penny earned.

So, let’s talk about making money. Making money.

Saving money. Have you ever thought about refinancing your home or auto?

Have you sat at home at the end of the day wondering if you will be able to pay the mortgage? So, pay yourself.

A penny saved is a penny earned in my book. Did you know that every one to three years it is recommended that you look at refinancing your auto? What if I could lower your monthly payment by one hundred dollars a month? Better than getting that second job? Yes and no.

But let’s say that you have done all of that. You have a great credit score. Your payments on your assets are theoretically as low as they can possibly be given present economic conditions.

And you still wish you had a little extra to put into the bank account. The answer is

to generate income.

Sounds easy. Just go pick some money off the money tree. Nope. Phone a friend?

Maybe, if it is a true emergency. I have been asked in the past how to generate more income. Generating income is today’s equivalent of the hunt. The difference is that, in capitalism, your “kill” comes from servicing others in the most notable way. So, what services are you capable of rendering?

Are you in construction?

Have you considered home repair on the weekends or rainy days? Or maybe you are a writer. Have you considering the endless online publications looking for a writer just like you? Maybe you are a chef. Go serve others by offering cooking classes. The problem isn’t that there aren’t any other ways to make money. The problem is confidence in yourself and your craft.

How confident are you in your chosen craft? What are you good at that you enjoy?

The good news is that since you are taking on projects outside of your job you make the hours, the rules, and the pay. I know. Pretty awesome.

Income comes in so many forms. Of course, there are many ways to save money.

But most people don’t want to deal with it. The paperwork. The uncomfortable questions. The off-chance that someone asks you a question that you don’t know the answer to. The possibility that you will have to work your second stream of income for less money initially. These things will happen. I promise you. So anticipate it.

Earl Nightingale, a famous author in the motivational industry, once said that most people are not willing to use their brains by sitting down for a few minutes to really think about their lives, their goals, and their strategies.

Do a service to yourself and sit down, jam out, and just free think. Think about the possibilities. Think about the dreams that you had that you let go of because

you told yourself you were too tired, too broke, or too busy to do anything else with your time.

Be creative. There is no such thing as a bad idea when it comes to free thinking. Jot your ideas down and move forward with action. This writer has done it. And you can too.

They did so largely because of how much the parent company and the franchises give back to the community, which is completely consistent with the Santos’ values. The Athens UPS Store is located right near Starbuck’s at 1260 Hwy 72 E, Ste B in Athens.

They managed to open up shop in the midst of COVID, and had planned to have their grand opening and

ribbon cutting celebration long before now. But, “good things come to those who wait,” and they are finalizing their plans for a party that will include great food and generous prize drawings. It will be held on October 22, and the Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting will be at 10 a.m.

Jason and Bridgette have both expressed deep appreciation for how the community of Athens has welcomed them, patronized their business, and made them feel right at home. Interestingly, they were also the ones who

sold the corporation on the idea of opening up a new store in Athens. There had been no plans to do so, but because of the “Athens Awesomeness” that we all know and feel, the corporation pulled the trigger, and it has been a great fit for everyone.

Because Jason and Bridgette are veterans, they greatly enjoy being able to give back to veterans’ organizations.

Recently they made flyers for a Horse, Pony and Mule Fun Day sponsored by AMVETS. They also love to help out schools and churches whenever possible.

The details for the party have now been finalized, and Happi Pappi Beignets will be on hand for the festivities.

HPB dishes their deliciousness from their food truck.

They describe beignets as “a classic French doughnut,” and theirs have been “carefully crafted to delight each customer.” The closest cousin to a beignet is a fritter dusted with confectioner’s sugar, and now that it is fall, Happi Pappi’s has also added hot pumpkin spice

café au lait to the menu; a perfect combination. If you go on the Happi Pappi Facebook page you will see they are in demand all over North Alabama, and Jason and Bridgette are so glad that they were able to get HPB to come and help us celebrate.

The UPS Store will also have drawings for some dandy prizes at the party.

First prize will be a $50 instore gift card good for any service offered by UPS. The second prize will be a $25 gift card that can be used in the same manner. The third prize will be a UPS mug custom-designed by Randy McKinney of Athens Athletics.

Why Not Swim Upstream?

I think salmon may be my favorite fish for many reasons, but right out of the gate, I love that they go against the flow! Because the best nutrition or fitness choices may not always be the popular/ easy ones, I am familiar with the feeling of “swimming upstream.” However, for now, let’s focus on how packed this fish is with health benefits!

Salmon is one of the most nutritious fish/proteins you can eat. Wild salmon has an excellent omega-3 fatty acid content. By keeping a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, you reduce inflammation. This is a huge benefit because inflammation is the base of many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, some types of cancers, and arthritis.

Some research even shows that omega-3 fatty acids have the potential to help slow cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Salmon also has virtually zero carbohydrates, making it perfect for those with diabetes. It contains tryptophan, the precursor to serotonin, which helps combat depression. This, combined with being a excellent source of vitamin D, makes it a natural mood booster along with aiding in bone health.

When it comes to actually picking out your salmon at

the store, there are few things you want to keep in mind.

First, don’t worry. Salmon can be consumed without fear of excess contaminants such as mercury, which can be a concern with other seafood, meaning you can eat it multiple times a week without hesitation. Wild salmon is usually best, but having some farmed salmon is not a totally bad thing. There is such a wide range of ways to purchase and prepare salmon that it helps keep variety in your diet while still using this same nutrient rich fish. Salmon can be purchased fresh, frozen, smoked, or canned.

There are also several varieties of salmon which you can try, including king, Atlantic, sockeye, coho, pink, and chum. I find the biggest difference to be what texture you prefer, which can be a choice which varies based on how you plan to prepare and cook it.

Meet Ben Harrison

Limestone County's Leading Voice for Better Roads and Fiscal Responsibility

Family, community, and Limestone County values have always been important to Ben, and they are the main reasons he decided to get involved in politics.

Before running for public office, Ben worked in the business world as a technical services manager for the Kohler Company, and later as a small businessman. He is well known for his principled voting record on the Limestone County Commission, where he is often the only vote against unnecessary projects, wasteful spending, and giving taxpayer money to out-of-state corporations. “I’m not a normal politician, and I guess that sometimes gets me in trouble”, Ben said with a grin. “I will always stand

up for the people of District 4, and not back down just because it’s not politically correct,” he continued.

As a County Commissioner, Ben's top priority is serving the people of District 4, and he's been working hard to build a foundation for our future during his time in office.

That foundation includes not only paving projects on 22 roads, but also paying off debt, streamlining operations, and repairing base failures on roads across the district. Ben’s conservative values and business experience also serve him well as a watchdog over government spending. District 4 is currently the only district in Limestone County debt free, and Ben is proud to have accomplished that feat before the end of his first term.

Sharing Limestone County’s conservative values, Ben is a well-known Republican leader around the State of Alabama. In the 2020 March primary, Ben won the election for Donald Trump Delegate to represent both Donald Trump

and the State of Alabama at the Republican National Convention. Receiving 205,130 votes statewide, he won a three way race by 46,467 votes.

Ben Harrison is currently the only Limestone County Commissioner who holds a seat at the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils.

This position allows him to represent our needs and our values at the state level.

Successful Leaders Are Comfortable In Their Own Skin

He is described by Bob Thune as a valuable resource in this field of study. His credentials are listed by Thune as follows: “Friedman served 25 years as an organizational consultant and family therapist in the Washington, DC area. He also served in the Lyndon Johnson administration.

His unique experience allowed him to observe leadership – and its problems – in the family, the church, and the political sphere.”

sightful volume entitled, A Failure Of Nerve, published in 2007. “Failure of nerve” refers to a state of mind existing among modern day leaders which caters to their own anxieties and the anxieties of those whom they lead. He points out how society has become more modern, but more anxious and less cerebral. Today’s society is described by Friedman as too fearful and led by the emotions of the larger group, which seeks to avoid confrontation. It is a concept he calls the “herd mindset.”

In order for the most effective change-making decisions to occur, leaders must first manage their own

anxieties in order to make the most critical changes of this generation. Too many leaders seek to adapt to this anxious atmosphere within the group, rather than making the effort for necessary change. The reason so many leaders are prone to adapt to this environment is because of their own anxieties and that of the group. According to Friedman, a key ingredient that leaders fail to exercise is called “nerve.” The idea of having nerve is an indispensable leadership quality when considering the needs of today’s world. In order to regain this nerve which are so necessary, leaders need to understand the importance of selfdifferentiation. The term self-differentiation means a well-defined person who is comfortable in their own skin and is not controlled by their own anxieties nor that of the group.

The reason so few necessary changes and so little progress happens within a system is because of avoidance strategies and the lack of self-differentiation. The following are qualities of self-differentiated leaders that are needed within a

system to navigate a group through crisis and to bring about effective change: Self-differentiated leaders have core convictions and values that that are indispensable. They do not lay aside these values because they differ with that of others. They don’t change these values in order to adapt to group anxieties and in particular their fear of change.

Self-differentiated leaders are not instinctively reactionary or impulsive but are thoughtful and strategic.

Self-differentiated leaders handle criticism well and are not defensive. They do not lose themselves if they are called self-willed, stubborn, or uncaring.

Self-differentiated leaders are not infected with the emotions or mood of the group. They have a habit of choosing their own mood or state of mind. They are a reassuring, non-anxious presence.

Self-differentiated leaders are capable of balancing their own individuality with the need to remain connected to the larger

group as a team member.

Self-differentiated leaders do not need to feel comfortable in order to remain connected within the group.

Self-differentiated leaders are authentic and comfortable in their own skin. They are self-aware and are aware of others and their emotions. They are secure in themselves.

How well-defined or selfdifferentiated are you?

On a scale of one to ten, how self-differentiated are you? Don’t despair if you are low on the scale.

For some, these qualities are second nature while others have to grow and develop them. The first step toward growth in this area is to become aware of one's own weaknesses, anxieties, and strengths.

Growth in this mindset of self-differentiation may very well be the work of a lifetime, but the more growth achieved, the better for change and progress within groups, systems, and families. The more risk averse our society becomes, there will be a need for more growth as self-differentiated leaders.

The Rhythm Of ‘Gaits’ That Build ‘Character Traits’

Welcome to the season we refer to as fall with all the colors declaring, “Change is on the way.” Have you grasped that change, transition, and transformation is beautified with vibrant colors? Be encouraged.

A post came to me with Vice-President Mike Pence on the back of a horse. I was inspired to write how gaits of a horse can and do build character traits. Giddy-up, here we go!

The word ‘gait’ means: walk, step, pace, manner, style, or posture. In the world of horses, there are four gaits. Walk (4beat rhythms), trot (2-beat rhythms), canter (3-beat rhythms) and gallop (4beat rhythms). Gallop is the fasted gait of the horse. It is a four-beat rhythm movement averaging about 15 to 30 mph.

The horse’s legs move one

at a time. There are popular gaited horses that come from genetics or bloodlines: Tennessee walking horse, Icelandic, American Saddlebred, Paso Fino, and Peruvian Paso.

Winston S. Churchill is quoted as saying, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” A horse’s gait (the outside of the horse) is good for the inside (character traits) of a man. So what comes to mind when you hear the word ‘character’? How about someone describing another person’s qualifications and dependability?

What about the inherent complex of attributes that determines a person’s moral and ethical actions and reactions? Or simply stating, character is good repute.

Realizing ONE step can build character, let’s define some character traits being

formed and developed inside us while on the back of a horse.

• Meek (meekness) – patience without anger – To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. Titus 3:2 • Loyal – supporting someone even when the going gets tough – For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. Hebrews 3:14 • Responsible – doing what I know I ought to do – Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2 • Self-Control – doing something even when I don’t feel like it – …and every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. 1 Corinthians 9:25 • Order (orderliness) – everything in its place – Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:40 • Discern (discernment) – able to see things as they really are – But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:14 • Forgive (forgiveness) – treating someone as though they never hurt me – Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Colossians 3:13 • Fair (fairness) – treating others equally - …observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

The Types of Liars

“Anybody who says they are a good liar obviously is not, because any legitimately savvy liar would always insist they’re honest about everything.”

- Chuck Klosterman Everybody lies. It doesn’t matter who you are, it is impossible to come across a human being who doesn’t lie. Lies can be trivial or hurtful or serious. Lying can deeply injure relationships. Finding out if someone has lied to you is as easy as checking on little things stated, a person’s sentence structure, body language, and even tone of voice. The definition of a lie is “an intentionally false statement.” In my last article, we looked at the types of lies -- the lies spoken for self-preservation, out of habit, in error, etc.

So, just as there are different types of lies, there are

different types of liars. For some people, compulsive lying could be a symptom of a personality disorder.

Those who falsely brag about themselves may not just be “embellishers,” but rather dealing with a narcissistic personality disorder or low self-esteem.

And then there are the liars who lie to evoke pity or sadness. For our purposes today, I have identified 6 types of liars.

The compulsive liar lies for several reasons. However, you can always find out if they are lying…their stories don’t usually add up. The compulsive liars are usually obvious and display classic lying behaviors, such as avoiding eye contact, sweating, or tripping over their words or rambling. There are two kinds of compulsive liars -- narcissistic liars and habitual liars. Narcissistic liars usually have a narcissistic personality disorder. These people make up grand stories centered

on themselves. They are also prone to embellishment. Narcissistic liars make themselves out to be the stars or heroes, no matter what the situation. Habitual liars constantly lie, or lie most of the time. For them, lying has become a regular habit, and they see no harm in doing so.

Pathological liars lie as a response to any stimuli.

These folks are excellent liars because they lie constantly and make up stories so unnecessarily and often, that it becomes extremely difficult to distinguish the truth from false statements. Unlike the compulsive liar, the pathological liar is nearly impossible to catch in the act. Pathological liars know how to play the eye contact game.

When lying, instead of looking away, they look directly at your face. These liars use lying as a defense mechanism, often to avoid something traumatic that has happened in their lives, or to protect themselves

when a situation goes bad.

Sociopathic liars lack empathy. They don’t care if the lies they state impact others negatively or even cause harm. These liars can be narcissistic and super charming, as they are master manipulators. They tell you fictional stories to get you to do what they want, whenever they want it. Being the target of a sociopathic liar will likely feel horrible because it will conflict with your morals and your sense of right and wrong. Sociopaths are excellent actors as they sway you to see things their way so you will give them what they want. For example, if you are not comfortable with something, they will likely not care, but will certainly act as if they do.

These liars are extremely dangerous to your emotional and mental health.

White liars often mix the truth with lies. They do it so that when people catch them at it, they tend to believe the white liars didn’t

mean to deceive, and were probably confused themselves. However, sometimes people tell white lies when they are trying to protect someone from the truth if it is too hurtful or damaging.

Careless liars are quite unique! They lie all the time and don’t much care about morals and ethics.

Most careless liars are aware of their dishonesty since they don’t put in much thought about the lies and are generally sloppy. If you know some careless liars, you may want to confront them about their lies. It is most likely that they are aware of exactly what they are doing. But, at the same time, it doesn’t mean that they will change themselves or even admit the lies.

Occasional liars cover most everyone. While it is not something to be applauded or accepted, one of the better things about occasional liars is that this is not a regular thing. They often feel guilty, will admit their lies, and even ask for forgiveness. If you call them out on their lies, they will genuinely be sorry and want to work on it and change.

A Cherokee Chief was teaching his grandson about life. He said to the boy, “A fight is going on inside me. It’s a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

One is evil, full of anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

The other is good. He is good, full of joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

This same fight is going on inside you – and every other person too.”

The boy thought about it for a minute and then ask his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The grandfather simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Many people are having trouble making decisions. The China virus is being used to try and change the way we live.

The political parties are divided and there seems to be no compromise from either side.

The same is true in the

medical field. The pharmaceutical side is all about the numbers. Get blood work done and they give you the results with a bunch of numbers; and if you don’t fall into the right set of numbers you may need a drug.

Those numbers cover everything from blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, glucose, vitamins, hormones, bone density, and many others. If your levels are too high or too low, they will tell you how important it is to get a prescription drug, therapy, or you may need surgery, based on the numbers.

Then you read about the drug they suggest and learn about the side effects. One example is cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor or Crestor. These drugs can lower your overall cholesterol but at what cost?

Even though I’m not talking specifically about the financial cost, which can be expensive, I am also talking about the cost to your physical health. Some of the most common side effects are cold-like symptoms, joint pain, diarrhea, urinary tract infection,

stomach pain, and nausea. It is also well known that there is more than one type of cancer that can occur when taking statins. Another consideration is that if you do have a heart attack while taking statins, you are up to 90 times more likely to die from the incident.

Other more dramatic disorders caused by statins are myositis, a chronic debilitating condition that includes dermatomyositis and polymyositis. Another disease that statins can cause is called rhabdomyolysis, which can cause severe muscle pain, liver damage, kidney failure and death.

Some people call it muscle wasting disease. The list of side effects caused by statins are too long to cover in this newsletter; so I strongly suggest that you go over all the possible side effects before taking any prescription drug.

-684 … This Number Should Make You Cry

by Mae Lewis Every year, on a given night in January, the US department of Housing and Urban Development conducts an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in an emergency shelter, transitional housing, or a safe haven. The Community Point in Time Count, or PIT, serves to report the number of homeless in a community versus the amount of shelter beds available for those numbers. This is one of the most significant things that happens in a community but is often unnoticed by the community at large.

In odd-numbered years, the PIT includes unsheltered numbers as well.

This means that workers must go to corners, parks, and bridges to physically count the homeless people sleeping on streets, park benches, and encampments. The problem

with the PIT count is that the reported numbers are only what can actually be counted. They aren’t able to count the homeless college student that is sleeping at a coworker’s or family member’s, the mother and her two kids sleeping in a parked car, or the couple sleeping in a motel for a few nights before they have to go to their car.

Keep in mind that the reported numbers are far below accurate; the January 2019 count revealed that there are more than 567,000 homeless people in the United States. (For reference, the population of Birmingham, Montgomery, AND Huntsville combined was about 600,000 at that same time).

Across the United States, there are only 291,837 beds for those individuals.

This means that for every person sleeping in a shelter

bed, there is one sleeping on the street.

In Alabama, there are about 3,261 homeless people (according to the 2019 PIT), which is approximately 0.58% of the US population. California, by contrast, has over 151,000 people and 27% of the US homeless population. The good news is that Alabama’s homeless population has declined by more than 46 percent in the last ten years, ranking it the third-lowest rate of homelessness in the country.

However, (the bad news) in just the north and northwest corner of Alabama (between Florence and Huntsville), there were 854 homeless people, which was an increase of 47% in this area. In spite of Alabama’s ranking, there is a still a shortage of 684 beds in the state. This means that 684 of our friends and

neighbors are sleeping on the street tonight. In California, the shortage of beds is over 102,000.

While overall, this may seem like good news for Alabama, the United States in general is suffering from a problem with homelessness. The number of people experiencing homelessness in the United States has been rising steadily for the last three years, and the unprecedented events of 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic lead experts to believe that we will see a 50% increase nationwide in homelessness throughout 2021. As of January 2020, there is still only 1 bed for every 2 homeless people in the United States.

The really astonishing part is that we are just talking about beds. We aren’t talking about food, or clothing, or healthcare. While there

are private industries and nonprofits who contribute services, the services simply DO NOT EXIST for homeless people like we would like to believe they do.

Here’s what this means: When you are affronted by a homeless person, check yourself. “Why don’t they just go to a shelter?” The truth is that they can’t. If you see them, there is nowhere else for them to be.

We won’t even go into the causes of homelessness here.

The competition is high.

We have an idea in our head that “services exist” for people in this predicament, but the reality is that the services are not enough.

In California, only 1 in 6 people can get access to services. That’s like winning the lottery just to have a meal, or a flu shot, or a bed, or a shower, or a toilet.

Many people, already staggering under the weight of just surviving, choose to forego charity services and go it alone, begging or quickly succumbing to the “work” of the street just to eat.

Friend, I’m sharing this information with you because you can help educate others about this. These numbers are only going to get higher. The only way we are going to fix this is if we work together to show dignity to worthy human beings. Volunteer at a shelter. Donate resources to nonprofits that are trying to create permanent housing solutions, rather than temporary beds.

Advocate with your community and religious leaders. Let human dignity and worth lead our actions, and change the narrative.
