By the time this edition of Athens Now hits the stands, there is a good chance that the history making shutdown of the Federal government will be over, but hopefully business will not just go back to normal. There are a number of ways to look at what happened—some folks are high fiving over the fact that legislators finally did what every day citizens must do if they are wanting to avoid financial collapse, and that is stop living beyond their means, put it on paper and sign it.

Others are feeling bullied. Services upon which they relied for years are no longer available, there are fears that food at the Arsenal Commissary will go bad and go to waste, one woman is irate that she can’t find any more bananas, and people are scrambling.

The only questions that seem to be reasonable in a situation like this are, how did we get here, and by

that I mean, to the place that it became necessary to shut down the government, what do we do to get through, and where do we go from here?

If we take even a moderate political view of 20th century American history, we know that during FDR’s 16 year administration, people began to believe that the role of government was to provide for its constituents, rather than govern them. With enough time, the belief became that the government’s job is to plan for and provide for people’s retirement, pay for their medicine, their education, their housing, their child care, and as was proven by the abuses that occurred during Hurricane Katrina, their engagement ring, honeymoon, plastic surgery, and even a sex change operation.

We follow the example of the Hawaiians. When I was in Iraq, during the time that Katrina hit I had the privilege of being amongst the Hawaii 299th National Guard, and they told me about how they deal with storms.

However, the man hit a snag, and that is that some of his would-be neighbors were pitching a fit over the fact that the Habitat approved plans call for a home made from wood, rather than brick. Someone actually started a petition to prevent the house from being built due to a lack of brick, and it had all of 10 signatures on it.

Needless to say, the guy and his wife were pretty hurt and told the Peoria, Illinois Journal Star that “it’ll almost make you feel you’re not welcome.”

Thankfully, the local director of Habitat, a woman by the name of Lea Anne Schmidgall also told the Journal Star, “If we have to add brick, we’ll do it.” In addition, a politician has stepped up to see that the brick brouhaha will

Habitat has special builds throughout their season. One is the Woman Build, another is the Soldier Build, and homes are always approved by the local powers that be, long before the ground is broken. I am just glad that people, both in the private and public sector stepped up to buy the bricks, and get this hero and his family into the house he worked for.

As for the petition, I can only hope the 10 signers are sincerely sorry.

Maybe they’ll prove it by buying the brick for the next Joe.

The “Fairness” Of Taxation

I am all for tax reform, and I think this one is long overdue. I wouldn’t even pitch a fit if the IRS was abolished, and a For Rent sign hung on Daniel Werfel’s office door.

The premise seems pretty straightforward.

Fair Tax intends to totally eliminate income tax, and with it the IRS, explaining that, “Under the FairTax, every person living in the United States pays a sales tax on purchases of new goods and services, excluding necessities due to the prebate.” This “prebate” is a monthly allowance, meant to cover food and basic supplies, much like the current personal exemption and standard deduction. Since individuals aren’t filing tax forms at all, this allows lower-income families to purchase basics without paying sales tax on them.

But the truth is, with a government that is such an incredibly heavy burden to support, spends everything it collects, and still goes broke, we have a bigger problem than a re-distributing of taxes will cure. As long as we have a monster in Washington, somebody will have to feed it.

Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention Oct 4 & 5

The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is known as the “Granddaddy of Midsouth Fiddlers Conventions” for its role in reviving the tradition of competition in old time music. Approximately, 15,000 people are expected to attend the convention this year from more than 30 states. The convention brings some 200 contestants to compete for top prize money. There are 18 different categories, including several fiddle and guitar categories, harmonica, mandolin, bluegrass banjo, dulcimer, old time singing, banjo, and buck dancing.

The Convention culminates in a “fiddle-off,” between the top two fiddlers. The winning fiddler is declared “Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddle Champion,” and takes home a trophy and $1000. A total of $11,850 will be awarded to contestants. In addition to the musical competition, hundreds of musicians will participate in the numerous jam sessions conducted across the Athens State campus during the weekend. Many people camp in travel trailers and even tents during the event on the University property. The convention also includes 150 traditional arts and crafts booths. These feature many handmade and traditional items. Convention proceeds support student scholarships and University projects. To date more than $500,000 has been contributed to the University. Athens “Haunts Walks” Offer Haunted History

by Teresa Todd, President, Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association Everyone knows that Athens, Alabama is a beautiful historic town.

Most people know that many of the structures predate the civil war.

You may even know some of the personal history of our founding families. However, not all our history lies on the surface.

Maybe you’ve seen that unexplainable form in the corner of your eye while visiting one our historic homes? Maybe you heard footsteps but turned and saw no one? Maybe a cold spot you passed through in 90 degree heat chilled you to the bone? Maybe you took pictures at the Fiddlers’ Convention and caught odd round shapes in the picture?

Maybe the answers to these occurrences lay in the tales of some of our oldest residents…the ones of ether or malcontent.

What Makes Ronnie Roll

The Gift Of Community, Part 6: Connecting And Reconnecting

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Mayor Ronnie has a pretty good handle on local history (at least from my perspective), but he often mentions that he wishes he knew more.

Gary McCaleb, author of The Gift Of Community, (upon which this series is based) has a lot to say about history and its role in building and preserving community.

The result is that a city becomes a community, and the community becomes a gift to those in it.

“What will our history be in 40 years?” he asked me. This was in reference to the rest of the chapter on history in McCaleb’s book, which has some final conclusions on the impact and importance of history in community building.

“That depends on us,” I answered. McCaleb’s first full statement in the chapter’s conclusion is: “Historic preservation connects and reconnects people to places, and people to people.”

We both agreed that the

first thing that fits this bill in Athens Limestone County is the Trinity project. We are making headway and sometimes people can get weary with fundraising, but the stories that surround

Trinity in all of its history are epic, and, most importantly, they belong to every Athenian because we are Americans, Alabamians, and Athenians.

We ourselves may not have been “slaves, Rebs

or Yankees,” but we are Americans. Let’s remember that.

We have just remembered the Trail of Tears, and the same maxims apply. People of all colors have connected and re-

connected to a story that is one of the saddest in American history, and, as all stories, has the hope of a redemptive purpose.

Although Hispanic history is not as far reaching in terms of time in our town as it is in Texas, the Southwest, or California, we are building our own version and celebrating it. Ronnie finished our time with a story about a woman with whom he worked when he was with DHR. “She was a wonderful woman, and she taught me something to remember and strive for,” he said. Of a particular kid who was part of our caseload, the old teacher said, “It took a long time for ‘Johnny’ to get good. We have to do what we can do to make it (i.e. history) good.” Healing the past and handing off the future better than we find the present, that’s some of what makes Ronnie roll.

Hometown Pride Makes Clean And Green Events Successful

Fall is in the air and the trees are showing signs of color. This is such a beautiful time of year in the Tennessee Valley.

It is also a time of festivals and activities right here in Athens. The Athens Grease Festival was a wonderful success, the Old Time Fiddlers Convention is underway, and the Storytelling Festival is right around the corner.

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful loves to work with festival organizers to help make these events as litter free and green as possible.

KALB took responsibility for making sure all of the grease used at the Athens Grease Festival was recycled. A local farmer will turn

that used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel for his farm equipment! You can recycle your own kitchen grease with a FOG collection container (Fats, Oils, and Grease). Just pick one up at the Athens Recycling Center, KALB office, Athens Utilities on Wilkinson Dr., or at the Athens Utilities payment office on Jefferson Street.

Containers are located in white metal cages. Fill it up and return it to one of the above locations for recycling.

What you will need: 1 large can of re-fried beans 1 pack of Taco seasoning mix -- (3 level tablespoons) 2 tablespoons real butter (melted) 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese In a bowl mix together beans, butter and taco seasoning; mix well. In case you did not notice, the government shut down. What can you do while you’re sitting on the couch as the shutdown happens?

How about get your resumé up-to-date? Even if you are not affected by the shut-down, you should have a current resumé.

But what does a resumé look like these days? I recently read an article

by Susan Ricker that

said, “If you just bought new, expensive resumé paper, you’ve already made a job-search mistake.” It made me think I probably did not know how to write a resumé anymore.

Her article, entitled “Does Your Resumé Look Dated? 6 Ways To Tell” had good ideas.

She said that since most employers are using online applications, you

could make yourself appear dated or out of touch if you don’t include links, or worse, your links are dead. She said the first section of your resumé should include name, address, contact information and links to personal portfolios or websites. If you don’t have a personal website, you can learn how to build one using free sites like WordPress, or by taking an online class, “Creating Websites using WordPress” through the Center for Lifelong Learning.

Another suggestion from Ricker - use keywords in the summary section taken from the job description. This will help you stand out to the hiring manager.

Putting the most interesting job information at the top with keep the hiring manager interested in reading more. Most hiring managers only skim resumés and you

Old resumés listed every job you ever had in chronological order. Today that is not necessary.

Ricker says “If you’re not sure if you should include a job, ask if it’s relevant to this position and your current career

goals.” Be sure to look over your resumé to make sure you are focusing on achievements and not tasks. It is important to be specific about your accomplishments but not to the point that it sounds forced. You don’t want to sound too good to be true.

The 2013 Storytelling Festival: A Savory Stew Of Tales

The word picture for Storytellers’ 2013 is found in the idea of serving up the perfect goulash, something made with a little of this and a little of that, not in any way hurried, and most importantly, cooked with love. The word “olio,” used in this year’s brochure to describe the free-to-thepublic Thursday night presentation comes from an old Spanish term, olla podrida, which could mean anything from “hodge podge” to “hot pot.” Essentially, there will be something for everyone!

Many of the old favorite ‘tellers will be back, such as Donald Davis, Carmen Deedy and Bill Lepp, along with Bobby Norfolk, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work. The ‘tellers all rave about the Athens event because of the legendary hospitality and honor that they experience each year, and our town has become one of their favorites as they travel the storytelling circuit. New to this year’s lineup, (but not at all to the craft), is Minton Sparks.

Ms. Sparks is described as a “lean and literate livewire in a flower print church dress.”

She is also a songwriter.

In addition, the Birmingham based musical and theatrical group, The Dill Pickers, will be performing. The Dill Pickers have been together since 1999, and got their start as part of the cast of the offBroadway musical Smoke

On The Mountain. One of their trademarks, besides being able to do a number of styles of music, is that they each play several characters apiece in their full length stage presentations.

For the very first time there will be a local tellers’ contest on Tuesday evening, the brainchild of Jeannette Dunnavent Jones. The finalists will be determined by the level of audience response, and will go on to “tell” interspersed amongst the professionals at Thursday night’s “Olio.” The judges will be looking for style, quality and panache, and will make the cal competition goes well, it will become an annual event, and auditions for next year will probably begin in the summer of 2014.”

One of the things that is being proposed for next year is having a storytellers’ contest in our local schools, with the winners performing at the 2014 event. Students from 3rd through 8th grade will be eligible to compete, and more details will be forthcoming.

People and businesses alike pitch in to make the Storytelling Festival something that, according to Wayne, “has an 80-100K dollar financial impact on our community.” There is more than just financial impact to be celebrated, though, and is best illustrated by the fact that the importance of storytelling has become so significant to educators that a high school in Decatur is now offering storytelling as an elective, and the students from their storytelling class will be attending.

Storytelling is about much more than making people laugh, or providing a safe place for families to enjoy themselves, or to put money in the coffers of local tourism. Telling stories preserves cultures, gives a sense of history as well as future, and is the basis of everything from gathering around a campfire in order to roast marshmallows, to imparting divine truths. Charity’s daughter Anjillyn Ray, runs the shop Tu e s d a y - F r i d a y, and Charity, who is a special ed teacher and works on the Arsenal, works on Saturday. “We took one of Wilson’s great loves, a love we all have,” they said, and here they are.

Everyone knows that camouflage has become a fashion staple in our area, especially during this time of year, and due to the fascination Americans have with the Robertson clan of Duck Dynasty, but the “problem is that there is all kind of stuff for men,” says Michael, “and hardly anything for women.”

by Camo Chick are technically known as “eagle claw hat hooks,” or to some, “happy hookers.” The hooks sell for $2.00, and are part of the fundraising campaign for the Wilson Gaut Scholarship fund. Wilson was a student at Ardmore High, and was a member of the FFA. In order to be a recipient of the Scholarship, the student has to be active in the FFA to qualify.

Michael finished the interview by telling a bit about his childhood growing up on a dairy farm. They raised Holsteins, and he is thankful for the work ethic he developed.

“The American Dream is to have your own business,” he said. “We care about the people who come in, and want them pleased when they leave. We are pleased to announce the Second celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month in Athens, AL. This will take place the 19 of October, 2013 at Swan Creek Park in Athens. The celebration will be from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

The contributions made and the importance of the presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans are recognized by celebrating the National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, starting with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on the morning of October 12, 1492. On this day we celebrate Columbus Day (Dia de la Raza).

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?!

by Joel Allen Ever have guests over to your house and they bring their dog who is a “Holy Terror?” “Holy Terror,” (Joel’s definition) is a very rowdy, mud throwing, slobbering, jumping, pawing, begging, stealing while counter surfing, barking, tornado of destruction and terrorist to your own dog in the house. This dog is so untrained that when it is time for your guests to arrive, you are already taking Goody’s headache powders and calling me, frantically asking for quick counter measures. In this case, I applaud the use of taking a preventative to a migraine. Well, guess who’s coming to dinner?

The holidays will soon be upon us, and it is my hope that this article will give some advance tidbits to prepare for canine guests.

A lot of people don’t realize they are being inconsiderate when they bring their untrained dog or puppy. I always ask or warn that Zues will be with me and when someone has a problem with Zues, I either don’t visit or I try to accommodate the situation. So, let’s all try and work things out because soon it will be the season of forgiving and remembering all our loved ones.

Gifts will be exchanged and everyone will be eating all sorts of goodies.

Lastly, you might get lucky because “Holy Terror” might decide to bring back your slippers that he originally took when no one was watching. Hence, soaking his Pet Parents with vinegar and water can be a great remedy for you and their dog can laugh at them in his own way.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

It’s sad to say, but Halloween is no longer the fun kid time of my youth.

I remember dressing up as a ghost; you know, you would take an old bed sheet, throw it over your head and hope no one poked your eyes out as the holes were cut, so you could see where you were going. Or if you were lucky, you went to the Big K and bought a costume; mine was C3PO. If you lived in the city, your parents would let you walk around the neighborhood with your friends, maybe a parent walked with you, but more often, the group just walked together and no one bothered them.

Afterwards your parents would take you to family and friends houses to trick or treat. You would get all kinds of goodies in your brown paper bag; remember the one you spent time drawing the jack-o-lantern or bats on during art class at school. My favorite goody was the popcorn balls and caramel covered apples made by hand. You would go home and pour out your haul on the kitchen table and start to devour it. Now those were the good old days.

If you are new to the area, you might need an alternative solution to the trick or treating activity. Let me make a suggestion; some churches and civic groups in the area will have a night of activities for the kids.

This would be a good way to meet other parents with

children of similar ages and will most likely be in a safe environment for the children.

Regardless of which method you wish to use, please do not advertise that you are not at home on the social media and leave some lights on.
