In a few days, it will have been 15 years since the day that 19 jihadists changed life in America forever, and the media will probably be full of commemorative pieces whose questions are the same as this one: where were we on that beautiful almost-Fall morning, and where are we, individually and as a nation, headed as a result?

We moved here from Mexico in August of 2000. On the morning of 9/11, I was in

changing intrusion, the following words had come into my mind: “Your family is all right.”

You see, my sister, brother-inlaw, nieces, and nephew lived in Manhattan. The two older kids were away at work and school, and the youngest was beginning her first day of the new school year. My sister was walking her to school, heard the first plane go in, and watched the second one go in.

Those words re: their safety had been like a crawler that runs across the bottom of the

For awhile, it seemed everyone sported patriotic memorabilia that has now been replaced with college football car flags, and church attendance was way up, which no longer is the case. And as could be expected, we slowly returned to our preoccupation with our own lives, and some became obsessed with the Kardashians.

While it’s true that no one can or should stay permanently in a post-disaster emotional

Some will do so out of a state of joyful preparation, others only as a last resort. Still others will demand that those in the first two categories take care of them or perish. Some will be so politically correct that they will not face down the reality of jihad, its nature, and its intent. Some will become so fear based and bitter that they will choose to forget that God’s got this, and become consumed with the very terror the terrorists tried to inflict upon us in 2001 and beyond.

Recently while on vacation with my family, I overheard a man claim that 9/11 never happened! I resisted the temptation to insert myself uninvited into the conversation and say, “Uh, buddy, my sister heard the first plane go in, and saw the second one, as did my niece.” I doubt that it would have done any good, nor do I think my boldness would have been appreciated.

Korean Troops Have More Religious Freedom Than Ours Do

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Athens Now on several occasions has sounded the alarm with respect to the erosion of the religious freedoms of our soldiers at bases all over the country. The great irony is that we have been put in the position to do all we can to protect them while they are in the business of potentially laying down their lives in order to protect our 1st Amendment guaranteed rights.

There was the Army Chaplain, Joseph Lawhorn who was issued a reprimand because, in a suicide prevention class that he was conducting to protect our soldiers, he dared tell how Scripture helped him through some dark times in his own life.

The caliber of the reprimand stopped his career from advancing. A sail-

an troops were publically baptized by immersion as a profession of their faith in an event sanctioned by the South Korean military command. It was the largest mass baptism event in Korean history. There were 40 local churches involved, 22 American leaders as well as Korean chaplains on hand, and it was held in Yeonmukwan Auditorium, located at the Korean Army Training Center. The baptismal garments worn by the Korean soldiers had red crosses right in the middle of their chests, and it did not appear that any Buddhists or anyone else were “offended.” If they were, they were thankfully ignored.

In reading about the scope of this event, I think what touched me the most was the coverage in a secular Korean paper called the Korea Herald. Because there were religious leaders invited from America to participate in the event, the Herald made the following statement on August 17th: “The event was also a way of thanking the U.S. military personnel for their past sacrifices in the once war-torn country.”

What a concept. Thanking the U.S. for its sacrifices by allowing Korean soldiers the public opportunity to experience the time honored symbol of new life: baptism. May we insist upon the same level of freedom, whether public or private, for our own protectors.

The Millennial Mind

On These Two Hang All the Law

by Rosemary Dewar Freedom is always the answer to a society’s preservation. The foundation upon which one builds that freedom is most essential.

The Unites States Constitution grants two provisions: the freedom of religious expression, and a means by which to defend it. The establishment of our liberties is based on the adoption of the Judeo-Christian ethic, which can be summed up by the two commandments that Jesus asserts: love God with your whole being, and love your neighbor. On these two, in both the political and religious spheres, hangs the law that allows for the greatest expression of liberty.

Those who sacrificed for America’s independence from Great Britain were denied the rights that are still denied to many in other countries today. The 1st Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the

free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” One’s freedom to express every idea in a civilized way is a beautiful permission.

Such a law given to the individual needs self-defense. The 2nd Amendment says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” A right not worth defending is in itself worthless.

The Founding Fathers understood what was stolen from them, and would not wish that upon another human being. King George III violated his citizens: he stole their profits, stifled their petitions, and nullified their security. How does one defend itself from a government that continues to violate God-given liberty?

fend themselves to a level that is easily overcome, a citizen’s freedom to petition the government is no longer tenable. America’s armed opposition to Great Britain was inevitable.

King George III confiscated arms in 1774. Joseph Stalin confiscated guns in 1929. Mao Tse-Tung confiscated guns in 1935.

Adolf Hitler confiscated privately owned guns in 1938. Each tyrant either held a twisted or non-existent acknowledgement of God.To assume that any other government, including the United States, would be invulnerable to the same outworking of tyranny is a dangerously naïve miscalculation.

Jesus went on to command “…love your neighbor, as you love yourself.” This is a tall order. One’s enjoyment of liberty as well as its protection is to extend past the family unit, and onto one’s neighbor. The Judeo-Christian God is not satisfied solely in being worshiped; the lives He says He has created must also be given due and equal security. If the protection of a right is extended to one while denied to another, the system ceases to be just.

The Founding Fathers chose the Judeo-Christian viewpoint as a foundation for the Constitution even though their individual belief systems were different. Jesus commands the adherence to an absolutely moral God in identity, character, deed, and knowledge. Every aspect of one’s life is to be a testimony of one’s relationship with God. To im-

God’s first commandment states, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” This is crucial to understand.

The Judeo-Christian God is one who delivers out of

bondage. Therefore, the exploitation of man is a direct offence against God. Political philosopher John Locke stated, “The end [result] of law is not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom. For in all the states of created beings capable of law, where there is no law, there is no freedom.” A law is not made to limit man, but it is enacted in order to free man from violating himself and others.

Liberty is a mutually beneficial agreement between the law giver, the law follower, and between the law followers.

Once justice is violated for one, it is violated for all. Pastor Martin Niemöller, in Nazi Germany, wrote, “…Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me— and there was no one left to speak for me.”

It is impossible to truly love what one is unwilling to defend.

ALABAMA 200 Bicentennial Celebration

ALABAMA 200 is bringing something for citizens and visitors of all ages to share and explore as we celebrate our state’s bicentennial. From a history walk and folk-life festivals, to travelling exhibitions and reunions, ALABAMA 200 is creating a three-year celebration for every facet of our beginning to our current life.

Beginning March 3rd, 2017 the celebration will start in our oldest areas, Mobile and St. Stephens, and culminate in December of 2019 in Huntsville.

It is the site of our humble beginnings where we drew up our first established constitution, and the location of the signing has been preserved. ALABAMA 200 includes all 67 counties, and stretches from the Ardmore Welcome Center to the white sand beaches of Orange Beach, as well as from the Capital city to Rocket City.

ALABAMA 200 is about more than commemorating 200 years of a government. The State of Alabama exists as a place of unparalleled natural beauty, and it is the home of a diverse and distinct people who share a history with unique perspectives

We used storytelling for how we learned about our ancestors, our humor, and our day to day lives. We handed down dance, music, and re-enactments to keep our lineage alive. We planted, grew, and canned our gardens filled with great, nutritious foods.

And we played! We made up most of our games, but we used our surroundings and our imaginations to foster these great activities.

You know, you only turn 200 years old once, and honoring the history that changed the world will need some time.

We begin in 2017 by “Discovering Our Place,” which coincides with Alabama’s Territorial Bicentennial. 2018 is the year for “Honoring Our People.” We will share the experiences and stories of the individuals who came here to live together. Sharing “Our Story” will be the theme of 2019, and the conclusion of ALABAMA 200, an invitation to continue celebrating what makes our state distinct, and honor the days to come with history as our guide.

We made our clothes, our bed clothes, and many other items from materials from food packaging. Others made furniture from the bounty of the forest and the hides of animals.

We cared for our children, our seniors, the sick, and disabled, but still worked every day to enable our family to obtain a good education.

Limestone County Vision ALABAMA 200 is an unprecedented opportunity to experience and explore North Alabama.

It is a chance to celebrate our place in each community in Limestone County.

It is a moment to remember the people who made their home in “Alabama the Beautiful,” and to nurture the generations who will carry us forward. It is a chance to chart a vibrant, prosperous future for our

county with our past to lead us forward.

Work and the workplace have gone through colossal changes between the mid-1800s and today. In the mid-1800’s, 60% of Americans made their living as farmers. During the mid-1900s, with its shift from an industrial to a knowledge-based economy, about 38% of workers declared farming as their main occupation. By 2000, only 2% of Americans worked on farms.

While we collect information for our 200th Anniversary, we will see the effects of industrialization, urbanization, immigration, labor unrest, wars, and changes in the economic positions

of our country on ordinary working Americans. In the beginning we toiled in coal mines, on tractors, at typewriters and in the military.

Then we labored on assembly lines making rockets, airplanes, the indispensable computer, and now robots.

Things you can participate in: We will create displays & exhibits to show our history and growth. Photographs and historical documents will help to tell our stories. We have found artifacts from the American Indians to explain the importance of our location, to the endangered species of the mighty Elk who roamed our area, as did many other distinctive creatures.

Our Limestone County community of Mooresville was incorporated November 16th, 1818 preceding Athens by 3 days, November 19th 1818.

Mooresville has many unique qualities which haven’t seemed to have changed since their inception. Visit Mooresville’s website to learn more about their distinctive community.

Duck and Run 5K and Fun Run – Run It, Walk It, or Waddle It!

This 5K is perfect for seasoned runners as well as beginners. The course is mildly challenging, and will take runners through the tree-lined streets and past antebellum homes in the Athens Historic Districts as well as around the Courthouse Square. Start and finish points will be at Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens, otherwise known as the Duck Pond.

Lots of refreshments and an awards presentation will take place in and around the historic Athens Visitors Center, which was built in 1906 and served as the Athens Utilities Building. Cash prizes and trophies in several age categories will be awarded. Two lucky ducks will go home with our cash drawing or a certificate for free Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream monthly for a year!

Frittatas: The Cook’s Friend

A frittata is a baked Italian omelette, and a source of endless creativity for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. It is great for using up leftovers, including salad, vegetables, meat, and though it’s not strictly Italian, potatoes. Total time from prep to serving is 30 minutes. Figure on using 2 eggs per person, and a 10 inch cast iron skillet.

Ingredients:

8 eggs, just beaten ½ cup milk (optional) 3 cups of veggies, chicken, potatoes, or fill the skillet about ½ full. If you use onions, or potatoes, make sure they are pre-cooked.

Salt, pepper, or a spicy blend such as Mrs. Dash, Tony’s, or Johnny’s, to taste, and make sure the spices are well blended into the egg mixture ¾ cup shredded cheese- Cheddar, Parmesan, Mozzarella, or a blend 3 T of coconut oil Preheat oven to 375F Place coconut oil in pan, make sure the bottom and sides are covered, and place pan in oven on middle shelf to preheat for at least 5 minutes.

Assemble ingredients on the counter near the oven. Open oven, pour in veggie/ meat mixture, followed by egg mixture, and top with cheese. Bake for 16-18 minutes, let stand for 2 minutes, and then serve immediately. Enjoy piping hot, at room temp, or the next day straight out of the fridge.

Eating Out And Following Your Diet

When I talk to people as a Health Coach about losing weight, one of my first suggestions is – do not eat out more than one time per week. Well, that is fine for many of us. For others, it is more difficult because maybe your spouse likes to dine out, or you have a group of friends that insist on eating out, or you have a job that requires you to take clients out. Unfortunately, Americans’ lifestyle has changed and eating out is often the “norm.” So, if you must dine out, below are some ideas that may help.

Go out for coffee. Getting coffee or tea instead of a meal out can be just as friendly or intimate way to catch up with friends (and a coffee place may be quieter) in addition to saving yourself some calories.

A cup of coffee or tea (black) has zero calories, but one of the fancy coffees with whip cream might have over 500 calories. Be thoughtful when ordering!!

Ask for a “To Go” box when ordering. When your meal arrives, immediately place half in the box and set it aside.

If you wait until you are finished, you might

change your mind and nibble a little more and a little more. Out of sight – out of mind!

Skip the bread or chips.

Mexican restaurants and many fine dining restaurants are notorious for placing cheap carbs on the table before you order. There might be a couple of restaurants with outstanding breads or chips, but usually it’s not worth the calories. before swallowing.

Both of these ideas can help slow your pace of eating and help your body recognize fullness cues before you have overeaten.

Another trick that may work is to “pre-load” your meal by eating a high-volume, low calorie filling food made up of vegetables and water such as a soup or salad before the main course. Of course Do yourself a favor, and politely refuse the basket of bread or chips and save your calories for the foods that are difficult to prepare at home.

Become familiar with food descriptions.

“Lightly sautéed” means doused in oil, “pan-fried” means bathed in butter,

cream based soups or salads with fatty dressings do not fit this bill.

No matter how you decide to watch your calories, stay aware. If possible, I still recommend keeping your restaurant dining to a minimum!

Preserving the presence of choral music in the Tennessee Valley. Why is it so important? It has long been thought that music makes kids smarter, but that’s only the beginning of the benefits. However, before we talk about the perks of having your kids participate in the Chorale, let’s talk a bit about “Heritage’s history.”

The Heritage Children’s Chorale of the South is a professional children’s chorus made up of young people ranging in age from eight to eighteen. The Chorale was established in Pulaski in 1988, by Mary Stephenson, who continues today as the director, and through the support and sponsorship of First National Bank of Pulaski. In 1997, an additional chapter was established in Alabama. Mary has also been the director of music at First United Methodist Church for 22 years. Her accompanist is Canna Ricketts, who is a teacher at Athens High School. Together Mary, Canna, the kids, the volunteers, and the parents make the Chorale what it is: an extraordinary musical opportunity for kids at a more than reasonable price. Auditions are very low key, no prepared selection is required, and they are open to both girls and boys.

Mary teaches the kids that their whole body is “an instrument you carry with you,” and I share her belief that being able to sing decently is an extremely important and attainable skill for all children. With as many choices for activities for kids these days, music lessons and voice lessons are often being neglected. With each Chorale practice being only 90 minutes, once a week, it is perfectly possible to pursue other interests without kids getting burned out.

What is boggling to my mind is that the fee per year to be a part of the Chorale is only $150.00. To get vocal training

and experience of this quality from a versatile, seasoned professional for such a low price is unheard of. These days, the going price for private voice lessons is $50 per lesson, and that doesn’t begin to provide the camaraderie, purpose, and “transferable skills” that can be found in being a part of something that is greater than one’s self, and produces such beauty for all.

One of those “transferable skills” that kids develop as part

of being a part of the Chorale could be loosely described as “performance skills.” Performance skills are things such as showing up when you have something else you’d rather do, being polite and professional when you’d rather not, learning how to stand, project your voice and be poised while you’re at it, learn about musical nuance, and most of all en-

joying the fruit of your labors because you did your best.

Through trial and error, Mary has developed what she affectionately calls “The Mary Stephenson Blitz Method of Music Education,” which is an immersion style of teaching music that has paid off greatly. The Chorale has performed throughout the South, at Disney World, in Nashville, has been a part of the recordings of famous artists, and has even been invited to perform

all over Europe.

Over the years, some of Mary’s “kids” stayed with her and the Chorale for 10 years, and the friendships made by the members last longer. She has this to say about what participants can expect to experience: “Children in the choir receive voice lessons each week, are provided performance oppor-

tunities to share their talent, experience the chance to work with various musical professionals, participate in tour engagements, and make lasting friendships.”

I have personally heard these kids practice as well as perform, and as someone who has been involved in music all my life, I can say they are very good. Mary and I share the belief that humans were designed to be musical, and I appreciate the fact that she is willing to work so hard to draw forth the talents she knows are in there.

What sets this Chorale apart is

that the pressures and “diva presence” that is often present in other groups just isn’t there.

“They work hard, that’s true, but they enjoy it,” said Mary.

Right now Mary is toying with what will be in the musical line-up for Christmas. She said, “Every year I try to think about doing a new, delightful take on Christmas. The kids have to enjoy it if they are going to work hard and still love to sing, so we do a mix of sacred and secular. I am toying with the idea of “Christmas Around The World.”

She closed our time with a simple invitation and request to both parents and kids: “Give me an hour and a half per week.” I can say with conviction that you and your child will be glad that you did.

In the last 4 years, OrthoSports Athens has added team members and locations, and is putting the finishing touches on a new facility on Hwy 72 in Rogersville, due to open September 6th. Drs. Boyett and Lawrence have built a solid reputation as joint replacement surgeons, and the Athens Limestone Hospital OR purchased a special state of the art table for them to use for their surgeries. Dr. Boyett and Dr. Lawrence are excited about the growth of OrthoSports Athens, as well as their ability to serve the community even more.

There are three new physicians who are part of the OrthoSports team. Dr. Eric Stanford, D.O., concentrates on sports medicine, and did a year long fellowship at the prestigious Hughston Clinic in Georgia. By the way, OrthoSports now serves as the team physicians for sporting events at West Limestone High, Athens High, Ardmore High, and Elkmont High schools.

Dr. Blake Boyett is Dr. Patrick Boyett’s nephew, and his specialty is spine surgery.

He will be joining the crew next week. He has completed two fellowships, and is the only member of the OrthoSports team that will do spine surgery. He will be able to greatly increase their scope of practice and service.

Dr. Jason Hatfield is the nonsurgical physician at OrthoSports, and also deals with sports medicine and sports related injuries such as sprains and breaks, and for several years served as the Medical Director of Carraway Northwest Wound Care Center, located in Winfield, AL. From 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, on Friday, the Center for Lifelong Learning will introduce our new dance instructor, Tim Eum. There will be music, fun, and refreshments. The fee is only $20 per couple, and you can check out Tim and what happens in a dance class.

Tim started dancing in college, and has been teaching for 40 years.

This semester he will focus on the Swing dances. Here is your chance to learn how to do East and West Coast Swing, as well as Single Swing.

Guide to Biblical Interpretation. The discussion will focus on methods commonly used by biblical scholars in the study of the Bible and will focus on historical and literary aspects of Biblical interpretation.

The fee is $40 for the series or $5 for the session. You can come to all of the classes or just come for the discussion when you can. The Importance Of Unity In The Community

by Ali Elizabeth Turner It had been another whirlwind week and weekend for the Mayor. On Saturday, he had been to several events, all of which were important, and the fact that there is more good stuff going on than he could ever possibly attend is proof positive that Athens is indeed a blessed town.

We talked about the fact that we are coming up on the 15th anniversary of 9/11, and how that day changed everything forever for the United States of America. “There are ways I think we are more vulnerable today than we were then,” he said, and I agree. We are in the middle of the most vicious election cycle that either of us has ever remembered, and it appears that either way it goes, we are going to be polarized. It is going to be the job of whomever is elected to re-forge a genuine unity, and while that may not be possible on a national scale any time soon, there is proof that it is definitely occurring in our fair city.

offenses that had been committed against him, and it was detailed. He then realized that the chances of anyone coming to him to repent were getting slimmer by the day, so he just decided to forgive, because the burden of unforgiveness was too great to bear, and it made him dependent upon others for his worth. Then he decided to forgive himself, which wasn’t so easy, either.

He tore up his list and decided to walk in his purpose.

At the end of Canton’s message, he invited people up to the front of the Limestone County Event Center to what was essentially an altar call, with one of the purposes being to cross a specific line in the sand: choosing to do everything possible to build unity in the community. Mayor Ronnie said that at least

100 people, including himself, went forward, and it was moving. “It starts with each one, and needs to be everyone,” he said.

We then marveled that the Mayor’s Youth Commission is now going to begin its 5th year. “Some of those kids from the first years have graduated from college,” he said, and he still hears from them.

He likes to think that the MYC is involved in “making butterflies.” He talked about how churches, service groups and businesses have come together in a way that was not seen when he was a boy here, and all of it to build Athens.

So, we spent a good part of our prayer time thanking God for what he has done, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

On Saturday, August 27th, Athenians of every color came together for an event called “Unity in the Community.” It was organized by Jan Matthews, and featured as the keynote a Christian hip hop artist by the name of Canton Jones out of Atlanta.

Mr. Jones’ message was as refreshing as it was timeless, and the Mayor said the music was powerful. Mayor Ronnie stood at the back of the room and took it all in as a private citizen rather than an attending public official, soaking up every word. Canton’s message was simple: take responsibility for your own actions, forgive no matter what has been done

Dog Barker

Through The Eyes Of A Trainer

by Joel Allen So, here I sit at my table setup, taking in new signups for dog training at the Pet Depot. My schedule is never the same because sometimes my clients need private lessons and I adhere to their schedules or availability. That is why, when I am asked what my hours are, I reply, “When do you need me?”

Over the years, I have witnessed the weird and unusually stubborn dog.

Then, there is just the weird dog. I don’t know how many times I have been told by the family of the dog needing the training, “I don’t believe you can help.” That response always brings a smile to my face, because in most of these cases, the dog has won out on patience, meaning the dog outwaited the human, and

the human gave up. Small breeds can sum up most of these cases.

Some dogs just need to be worn down and your patience increased. Here is a basic 101 tip: take the stubborn dog for a twenty-minute walk. The walker walks the dog, not the dog walking the walker. In other words, the dog walks with the human walking them, not in front of or behind the person walking them. In many situations, a training collar will be needed.

The owner should consult with a trainer to insure the right training collar is purchased and used properly.

When I train a class, I train the basic obedience commands needed for all learning. It never fails: as the class progresses, I get the privilege of witnessing the transformation of

the dog and the family. In most cases, when the dog learns who is in charge, they look up to their human and it is a look of love. See, a dog promises one thing, their love and their life.

Sometimes, I get the real wild child of dogs. This is the dog dragging their owner into or out of the store. This dog will go any direction that they feel the need or desire to go. Another tell-tale sign is the wild eyed look the human has when the wild child brings them into the store. In this instance, I usually hear them coming, yelling the dog’s name and trying their best to get the dog to stop pulling. One time, I offered to help a lady with her dog that was dragging her and she told me that she was alright. I just sat back and watched

her get dragged throughout the store.

Some people just don’t understand that I am not going to charge them for advice.

Then, there is the dog that goes with their human that wants to mark everything. When your dog does this, guess who is in charge? Not the human! This is the same dog marking throughout the store because they have been allowed that behavior. How does one correct this problem? By watching for when the dog is about to mark and give them a quick collar correction and saying, “No.” If they do succeed in marking, please have the decency of letting the store know so the mess can be cleaned up.

So, everyone out there

that has a behavior issue or lack of discipline in their dog: come see me and what I can do before giving up. I am very affordable, both for private lessons and group training. To participate in group, the dog needs to be six months or older, unless there are extenuating circumstances (like service dogs).

Independence Days Remembered

After retiring and moving to Elk River in 2010, I began the custom of ringing my dinner bell to celebrate Independence from England. Being a “passive-aggressive personality with redneck undertones,” I would’ve preferred marching on Washington with fellow citizens armed with pitch forks and driving the privileged scoundrels from our beautiful marble buildings.

However, that would get me time in Federal prison.

I don’t have time to serve; I’m too busy scratching to pay taxes to keep the scoundrels up there. Anyway, passive-aggressive personalities never take action – they only make threats. The latter part of my diagnosis is because I “allegedly” (a weasely lawyer word meaning guilty as sin) own a Bible and a Colt .38. I figure if reading scripture to an intruder won’t dissuade him, the .38 will.

The previous Fourth I decided to trim tree limbs.

The chainsaw wouldn’t start. “Dadblame, no account, good for nothing, foreign built piece of ….”

I gave up and drank coffee until my nerves were squirrely. At 8:30 a.m. I walked outside and rang my dinner bell replicating what our Founding Fathers did at Philadelphia in 1776.

The bell pealed loud and clear in the morning stillness. Shortly, a pick-up rattled down my driveway.

It was my neighbor Bob, coming to check on me. He got out, looked around for smoke and asked, “Is some-

thing wrong?”

“Nah, man it’s the Fourth!

I’m ringing for freedom,” I said. “It’s about the only thing a citizen can do without violating some darn law or regulation.” Of course, making noise is unlawful too, but I didn’t care. I drank more coffee and thought about previous Independence Days. The first one I remember was in 1946, when I was 5 years old. Mama went to Cud’n Walthar Thomas’s (that’s what Daddy called his cousins) on Nick Davis Road and helped shred barbecued pork. I’d never heard of barbecue. Cud’n Walthar was the granddaddy of all barbecue cookers in Limestone County. Mama’s compensation was a pan of meat.

I ate until I was sick.

In 1949, Mama and I rode Joiner Brother’s bus to Anderson and attended the Burch family reunion at Aunt Dixie’s house. A No. 3 washtub was filled with ice and “dopes” – that’s what Granddaddy Robert Holt called soft drinks. Roger Burch and I competed to see who could drink the most Double Colas. I won, and again, got sick.

“Not nice.”

“I didn’t mean the prison… uh, I meant learning how to make knives.” I had to be careful not to rile Sam, who was known for regularly shotgunning his TV. “I was innocent,” he said.

“Of course!” I exclaimed.

“I was sitting in my car minding my own business when a bank was robbed.

Cops claimed I was driving the get-away car.”

“Yeah, just like the cops, always accusing folks,” I said, trying to be agreeable.

Another memorable Fourth was when I attended a Boston Pops concert on the banks of the Charles River.

When the 1812 Overture was played, cannons fired.

Scared all the dogs and babies half to death. One fellow fell out of a tree.

In 2006 I was sitting on the “green” in Philadelphia in front of Independence Hall, along with thousands of other folks listening to Pete Fountain’s Orchestra. Fireworks followed. Wow! But, my most memorable Independence Day was shortly after divorcing. I worked out daily, lifting weights, doing push-ups and sit-ups.

Chicks like a hard body. I was attending a pool party at the home of Huntsville physician, Dr. Smith (not

real name) parading my buffed and tan body when Dr. Smith walked over and pointed at my chest. “Do you know what that is?” he asked.

“Yeah, a mole.”

“It’s a third breast,” he said.

“No way!”

“Yeah, it’s a breast all right,” Dr. Smith said.

“Shhh, not so loud.”

A chick standing nearby overheard him.

“Freaky man, freaky!”

Mama had birthed a mutant.

I felt like a two-headed calf at the County Fair, and that made me sick too.

I can’t wait to see what Independence Day, 2017 brings. If we are still a free people, I’m going to ring my bell louder and longer than ever before – and with my shirt on.

When we farmed at Madison Crossroads in the mid1950’s, I attended the annual barbecue held at the school.

I tried to persuade a silly girl to give me a kiss, but she just giggled. Who cared?

We played hide and seek and I ate barbecue, until I was sick.

Know your family’s eye health history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with a disease or condition since many are hereditary. This will help to determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition.

Eat right to protect your sight. You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too.iResearch has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating

fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.

Wear protective eyewear.

Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home.

Protective eyewear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed to provide the correct protection for a certain activity. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other

plastics. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear, as do some sporting goods stores.

Quit smoking or never start. Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

Be cool and wear your shades. Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Give your eyes a rest. If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you sometimes forget to blink and your eyes can get fatigued.

Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

Clean your hands and your contact lenses— properly. To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate.

Practice workplace eye safety. Employers are required to provide a safe work environment. When protective eyewear is required as a part of your job, make a habit of wearing the appropriate type at all times and encourage your coworkers to do the same.

Do You Know When To Shoot?

by Paul Foreman Discovering a stranger in your home in the middle of the night, or anytime for that matter, can be one of the scariest life-threatening experiences you may ever encounter. You need to be trained for such a life altering event.

Were you trained how to type properly, or do you hunt and peck, like me? Typing is a skill which can be learned on your own. But, proper typing is not a life saving skill.

In America, citizens who own firearms are using them to save an innocent life up to twenty five hundred times a day. Saving a life with a firearm happens a lot more than taking a life with a firearm. I bet you will not read that in the “Lame Stream” media.

Learning to use a gun safely and properly is more than just pointing and pulling the trig-

ger. As I said in a past issue of Athens Now, learning when to shoot is just as important as knowing when not to shoot, and can either save your life, or keep you out of jail.

Home invasion burglaries in the daytime are actually more common than at night. The only thing good about these crimes occurring in the daylight hours is that hopefully, you would be fully awake and alert. Either way, it’s going to be a highly stressful event.

Unless you are prepared and have been trained in tactical home defense, you could make a bad experience end up being even worse. You and your family should have a plan of action of action to follow in case of any emergency.

Both you and your family should be taking gun training classes, which should include

gun safety. All of us who hold the 2nd Amendment near and dear to our hearts take our right to self defense personally.

Last year, I was giving a talk at one of the local Senior Centers about self defense in the home. This one lady stood up in class and said, “If somebody comes into my house, I'll just shoot em!” I was trying to tell her and the group, “The bad guy might not just stand there and let you shoot him. And,” I added, “what if he has a gun and wants to shoot you?” I was trying to convince her she should retreat to a defensible location like a doorway or behind heavy furniture, and then shoot him!

Remember, the best fight you will ever be in is the

fight you avoided.

You also need to know your state's laws concerning self defense. Alabama is a “Castle Doctrine” or “Stand Your Ground” state. You are not required by law to retreat from danger if you are legally there in the first place. BUT, retreating might be the wisest thing to do. You need to know exactly when it is legal to shoot an intruder in your home. Overall, to use deadly force, you must be in fear for your life, or that of another innocent person. Your purpose is to stop the threat. You must be able to testify that you shot the bad guy to stop the threat. You would never want to say, “I was scared, so I used my gun to kill him.”

As a matter of fact, you probably better say very little until you have a lawyer with you.

In many states, to claim self defense, the bad guy must already be inside your home.

Deadly force is not justified if the bad guy runs when he is confronted, and you are no longer in fear for your life. In most states, you cannot use deadly force to stop a property crime, such as if a bad guy is stealing something from your yard.

Most pistol training and concealed carry classes should include self defense laws.

You should ask the instructor if self defense laws are included in the class before you sign up. If a bad guy had your loved one at gun point, using them as a hostage, what would you do? You could try begging the bad guy to turn them loose. Do you think that would work? If the bad guy was using your son or daughter as a shield, could you shoot without hitting the wrong person?

I am now offering Advanced Self Defense Handgun classes. I use various scenarios including “Shoot, Don't Shoot” and “Hostage” targets to train my students to defend themselves or their loved ones. I will also be offering an introductory firearm safety class at the Center for Lifelong Learning on September 16th from 6:30-8pm.
