Students' apartment

04 05 06 07 08

a 60m2 apartment designed to accommodate two architecture/design students. students need a place where they can interact with other people most of the time, even when they are studying. especially architecture/design students could really use a second opinion when they are drawing. Putting forward the idea of cohabitation and cooperation, this apartment provides them places to share everyday moments.

The idea

The Hostel project athens, Greece

the small wooden cube is too small to coexist alone with the transparent big cube. they need the intermediate metal cube in order to coexist harmoniously.

and people, an interaction between the public and the private and the transition between them.

in the same way that the cubes are interdependent between them, likewise, the areas of a hostel are as equally interdependent. they are connected through their passages and the consecutive transition between the open communal spaces and the more private ones, either by the use of increasingly "solid" boundaries or the use of materials and colours. inside the hostel, the public-communal areas are rooms which we share with everyone, there is no privacy, in the same way that there is no privacy when we try to hide behind a glass wall. moving towards the bed, the visitor of the hostel gradually passes from the public areas to more private ones, the dormitories. Rooms which he doesn't share with everyone but only a small group of people. it could be considered a semi-private area. an area inside which exists the "small wooden cube" of each visitor. a private space. in the end, it's all about the coexistance of spaces

athens, international arrivals, world rank and rank in europe. a city like athens, should have an appropriate kind of hostel for its visitors.

entering the hostel we arrive on the entrance area, a passage from the public street to the building. it's the area where the visitor can leave his umbrella or take off his jacket and then choose a direction, either going up the stairs towards his room or the reception or continue walking straight ahead to the courtyard. the reception has direct visual contact with the entrance while staying in contact with the lobby, the staircase and the corridor that leads to the wc and the dormitories. Leaving behind the public area of the lobby, the visitor follows the passageway to a space that is not intented to be accessed by all visitors, only by him and his "roommates", his dormitory. therein lies his own personal space, his bed. Following the corridor to its end, there is a stair which connects the two floors with the courtyard on the ground floor. at the courtyard is located the dining area which can also be used for movies' projections. next to the dining area is the kitchen which provides the guests with a self-service buffet.

arriving to the hostel's first floor, the visitor is on its waiting room. in order to find his dormitory, or the double room that is provided on this floor, he must again follow the metal passageway, thus passing from the open space of the waiting room to the more private area of the rooms and then, like on the ground floor, to the space that is intented to satisfy his need for privacy, his bed. the dormitories on this floor can accommodate up to six persons each and in the middle of the rooms is the wc/showers area, which can be accessed easily from both sides. the double room has its own bathroom. above the kitchen is located the manager's office.

the visitor has access to the basement using the main staircase or the entrance from the courtyard. descending from the main staircase, the visitor arrives at the waiting room of the floor. through the metal passageway, the visitor can either go to the dormitories and the wc/showers area on the left side, to the laundry which is straight ahead or to the luggage room which is on the right side. on this floor, there is also a female dormitory. next to the luggage room is located the hostel's storage room which can also be accessed through the door that leads to the main street. under the kitchen is its storage room and the refrigerators.

They are bold. Colourful. With character. the idea behind the design of the store was the creation of a simple yet dynamic space which can display the clothes without distracting the customer from them. simplicity on the choise of materials was also needed because of the limited provided space. the store consists of two levels, the ground floor and the basement. clothes and accessories are exhibited at both floors while vertically to them there is an aquarium, which alternatively can be used as a display with suspended mannequins. Wassily kandinsky’s works have been an inspiration for the forms created in the store.

Iris

eleusis, Greece

the particular building is located at the town of eleusis and has been active from 1925 to 1970 as a paint factory. since then, the building was abandoned and started to decay but nevertheless it is now considered a valuable monument.

14 15 16 17 18

the idea was to turn the abandoned factory into a theater. important part of the concept was the location of the factory. eleusis is best known for having been the site of the eleusinian mysteries, one of the most famous religious events of the ancient Greek religion and nowadays it's the town with the second largest commercial port in attica. it was the importance of the building itself that made us decide to preserve the frame uncovered and create glass walls wherever possible, putting the building and its history in display, like a part of an exhibition. meanwhile, because of the significance of the town as a commercial port, we created auditoriums shaped in a way that reminded us ships. the two auditoriums are connected through a bridge onto the visitors can walk and admire the building. on the ground floor there is a gift shop, a media point/library where visitors can learn about the history of the building and the town, a lounge bar and an area for the theatre groups to practice.
