Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Law NFQ Level 8 This course is designed for those who are interested in Irish Law and Legal Studies and who wish to develop their general knowledge of the basic concepts of law. The programme is particularly suited for those whose work activities involve them in aspects of law such as Garda Síochána, civil servants and those who seek careers as Clerks, Solicitors or Barristers.

Year 4 • Family Law • Evidence Law • Human Rights Law • Jurisprudence ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Leaving Certificate with Grade C3 in two Honours Level subjects, one of which must be English, plus four other subjects at Grade D3 (can be Honours or Ordinary Level) or Mature applicants, i.e. over 23 years of age Please note: applicants must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Office and file management.

LEARNING TO LEARN Please note: Institute induction and commencement of the Learning to Learn module is on Saturday 21 September 2013 from 9.30am to 5.00pm. Attendance on that date is compulsory.

EXEMPTIONS FROM PROFESSIONAL BODIES Upon successful completion graduates are exempt from the Law Society’s Preliminary examination.

This degree is also approved by the Honorable Society of Kings Inns and graduates are eligible to sit the entrance examination to the Barrister at Law Degree Programme.

PROGRESSION Graduates from the Honours Degree commonly choose to apply for post-graduate study at Blackhall Place in order to qualify as a solicitor or at the Kings Inn in order to qualify as a barrister.

Certificate in Constitutional and Family Law (Level 8 – 30 ECTS)

The main aim of the Certificate in Constitutional and Family Law is to provide learners of all backgrounds the opportunity to explore and develop their interest in Irish Constitutional and Family Law. On successful completion the learner will/should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of a substantial range of concepts, values, rules and principles of Irish Constitutional and Family Law. 2. Assess and debate the effectiveness of the Separation of powers doctrine in Irish law and able to critically assess and analyse the manner in which the Constitution interacts with both EU and International law.

3. Demonstrate an in-depth and integrated understanding of the manner in which fundamental rights contained in the Irish Constitution have impacted upon and shaped Irish law, and indeed, society.

4. Analyse and apply fundamental principles of common law, statutory law and constitutional law in context of family law.

5. Apply the principles and methods of legal research in these areas.

6. Organise information and illustrate its relevance to its intended audience through the development of oral and written presentation skills.

7. Display skills of analysis, critical judgment, evaluation and literate employment of technical terminology.

8. To continue their legal education with the intellectual and practical skills necessary to do this effectively.

Single Subject – Company Law (Level 8 – 15 ECTS)

The aim of this module is to introduce students to company law, explains the manner in which company law is regulated, administered, enforced and dissolved. The objective to enable them to apply legal concepts and legal reasoning to a range of issues confronted in corporate business.
