Know Your Car AIM OF COURSE • To familiarise participants with the names of car engine components, the need for same, and their working principles • To outline how simple service procedures are carried out and enable participants to cut down on running costs by highlighting the importance of good routine maintenance • To enable participants to become better drivers. COURSE CONTENT Mechanical and electrical components of the car are examined in theory in ten easy to follow lessons. After each lesson a visit is made to the automobile workshop in the Institute, to observe practical demonstrations of car components in operation. INTENDED FOR Motorists who wish to have a better understanding of the modern motor car (petrol and diesel). The course will contain 50% theory and 50% practical demonstration. Now entering their ninth year, these courses continue to receive high levels of praise from participants. People of a range of different skill levels attend and there are a growing number of lady skippers. AIM OF COURSE The objectives of the courses are • To enable participants to be familiar and comfortable in maintaining their craft and dealing with fibreglass maintenance and repairs, mechanical and electrical components of the boat, including engines, transmissions, controls, electrics, hull, super-structure, bilges, gas fittings, weather proofing. • To outline how simple service procedures are carried out and enable participants to cut down on running costs by highlighting the importance of good routine maintenance and demonstrating engine servicing routines using a full size engine. • To enable participants to be familiar and comfortable with wintering and new season preparations of their boats. The courses are presented by experienced instructors supported by experienced boat users. All courses involve significant practical demonstration. COURSE DATES 1. Welding for Beginners
AIM OF COURSE To enable participants to become proficient in the use of welding equipment. Note: This course will contain at least 70% practical work. COURSE CONTENT • Health and Safety aspects of welding (i.e. dress, behaviour in workshop and on-site etc). • Electric arc welding (horizontal and vertical) of mild steel. • Oxy-acetylene welding, brazing and cutting of mild steel. • An introduction to metal inert gas (MIG-CO2) welding. • Project: Creation of a project using learned welding techniques. Introduction to Renewable Energies and Energy Awareness PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
AIM OF COURSE To give an overview of renewable energy technology and energy awareness and outline the basic principles of solar electricity, solar water heating, small-scale wind power, micro hydro-power, bioenergy, heat pumps and their applications for homes, businesses and farms.
The course is aimed at those in the business, nonprofit, public and academic sectors who wish to get a comprehensive introduction to renewable energy technologies, as well as those wishing to installing renewable energy systems in both urban or rural settings. The emphasis is on how things work, what it is practicable to do, and participants have the opportunity to develop their own projects. At the end of the course participants should be able to do initial designs for renewable energy systems. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the end of the course students will be able: • To calculate their use of energy use in the home/farm • To reduce energy use at little capital cost • To evaluate, cost and price a domestic renewable energy system – solar, small scale wind, bioenergy or heat pump • To apply for a grant to help meet costs of installation of a renewable energy system • To ask relevant questions to a supplier of renewable energy systems • To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of growing energy crops COURSE CONTENT • Review of existing fuel sources – Coil, Oil, Gas, Nuclear.
