The BIG read… the mission statement
As we now enter another year, I have set a few goals that we want to achieve this year for our magazine. Increasing the distribution is obviously a main one, and we are working on that on a weekly basis. However, I also aim to make Farming Scotland ‘the BIG read’, the kind of magazine that you buy, read and put down on your coffee table, office table, reception area and then re-visit to read a certain article again - we certainly do not want to be in your bins! We will therefore, be expanding our Flavour of Scotland section, as farming is all about food, and quality Scottish produce is something I want to promote. We will also be carrying more Livestock orientated articles and features within it’s own dedicated section throughout this coming year. And finally, our new Lifestyle section will be increased too, as we know that all farmers and landowners are very discerning in their tastes for the better thing in life! Thus creating the perfect balance of ‘light’ and ‘shade’ within the overall magazine – something for everyone perhaps? So, onwards and upwards folks. Slàinte, Athole.

TRACTORS FOR 2013 We take a look into what is out there for the coming year Farmall U Pro Efficient from Case Comprehensive market research and field testing on a scale rarely seen before on an allround Case IH tractor has driven the development of the newlyannounced Farmall U Pro, a new tractor concept designed by Case IH engineers to meet the requirements of today’s mixed and arable farms. During the tractor’s test phase, numerous European farmers were asked about their exact operating requirements. That was followed by customer clinics at which prototypes and concepts were tested early on for their practical feasibility. Powerful engines with high torque and lower fuel
consumption, a comfortable working space, good terrain compatibility and an ideal partner for loader work are the most important requirements mentioned by farmers in our research. In the field, customers are also looking for flexible working environment at the front, rear and sides of the tractor, while they need tractors that can handle mounted implements that are getting larger and require higher performance from hydraulic systems. Upgrade for Landini 7 Series The current line-up of six models has been rationalised into a five-tractor line-up as a result of significant power and torque increases, especially for the Dual Power feature, which is increased by as much as 20hp over the previous models. Operators upgrading to a Landini 7 Series ‘SCR’ tractor should therefore see quite a lift in performance when Dual Power is automatically engaged when powering pto-driven implements, and also when towing with one of three ‘small frame’ models. The 7-180 has 150hp maximum standard output and
175hp with Dual Power; the 7-195 gets 165hp for operating draft equipment such as a plough or cultivator and 188hp to tow trailers and drive power harrows; and the 7-205 has 175hp and 203hp for such operations. Two ‘large frame’ tractors top out the line-up: they are the Landini 7-220 with 188hp for soil-engaging implements and 218hp when the pto is under load; and the 7-235, which peaks at 214hp and 232hp in such circumstances. Range topping new model is flagship of MF 7600 Series The new MF 7626 now heads up Massey Ferguson’s awardwinning MF 7600 Series. The new tractor now takes the MF 7600 Series to an even wider market, encompassing livestock, arable, contracting and construction sectors. The top model in a range that now extends from 140hp

The McCormick X60 tractor The X60 design certainly has a tougher build than the CX, with a heavier duty transmission and front axle – which incorporates a locking differential and disc brakes for the first time – and increased rear linkage lift
capacity with draft control now sensing through the lower linkage arms. “It’s not too heavy but there is a fair bit of weight in the tractor, especially around the back-end,” Colin Boocock notes. “That’s great for stability when it’s working with a loader.” The McCormick LiftMaster is a good match for the machine, he reckons. A joystick on the console makes it easy to control

Same Virtus tractors SAME has launched a completely new range of high performance tractors - the Virtus 100 (99hp), Virtus 110 (110hp) and Virtus 120 (122hp). A key feature of these new models is their high power to weight ratio – the 122hp Virtus 120, for example, has a powerto-weight ratio of 38.5 kg/hp. Combined with a permissible load of 8,000 kg the result is a new tractor category which is considered to be unique in the market. All Virtus models are powered by Deutz 4-cylinder, electronically managed common rail engines. The external liquid-cooled exhaust gas recirculation system combined with the POC filter and DOC catalytic converter reduce particulate and NOx levels to obtain optimum efficiency in terms of emission control. All Virtus models comply with Tier 4i emissions regulations and the engine 19
TRACTORS delivers 95% of maximum power at just 1600 rpm. In the transmission department a 60+60 Powershift transmission provides a top speed of 50 km/h, a working range from 2.9 to 16 kph and a 134 m/h creeper speed. Valtra introduces new smaller models in the N Series The two smallest models in the Valtra N Series are being upgraded. The new N93 and N103 models replace the N82 and N92 models, correspondingly. The new tractors feature a brand new nose and three-
cylinder engine. The new design significantly improves both visibility from the cab and agility. Working at night and in dark conditions is also improved thanks to new bi-halogen lights that combine both full and low beams. The new models are also considerably quieter than the models they replace. Both new models are available with Valtra’s traditional HiTech transmission with three main powershift gears. The N103 is also available with a five-step HiTech 5 transmission. In terms of features and usage, it is the same as the transmission found on larger models, but it has been lightened to reduce
the total weight of the tractor by over a hundred kilos compared with previous models. New Zetor Forterra tractor Designed without electronics and additional fuel admixtures, the factory engines of ZETOR dominate over competition through simple service and high level of reliability. They feature a high level of torque margin (over 35 %), which reduces the need of advance gear shifting. Engine output remains constant within a wide range of rpm speeds. The tractor is equipped with a fully synchronized four speed
transmission with three reduction ranges in both forward & reverse, offering 12x12 gears in total. In addition there is a choice of PTO options, 540/1000 or 540/540E. The Major Model makes use of hydraulics with mechanical control. It features not only high lifting force, but also a smooth regulation of startups, including the hydraulic lock function while tools are being transported. The tractor is fitted with a choice of either, two double acting or one single acting external service valve. In addition an oil flow return pipe is fitted, ideal when operating an hydraulic motor.

Trelleborg’s new high performance tyres Trelleborg, global developer and supplier of tire and complete wheel solutions for the agricultural and materials handling industries, launched its extensive product portfolio at leading agricultural exhibition recently in Italy. Taking centre stage on the stand was the company’s latest product innovation, the IF 900/60R42 TM1000 High Power, which was mounted on the new Trelleborg THK 30x42 inch rim; a 30 inch rim on 42 inch diameter roll-formed, in one piece. Paolo Pompei, Business Unit President Agricultural & Forestry tires, Trelleborg Wheel Systems, commented: “We are looking forward to bringing our comprehensive range of high performance solutions, engineered for the agricultural industry, directly to those that could benefit from them the most. “As well as the TM1000 High Power, we are have also launched our innovative TM3000, a new range of tires specifically developed for harvesting applications, and the TH400 range, our new radial agro industrial line.
“We are extremely proud of all our new product innovations. As such, the excellent results that can be achieved by all our new tire solutions will be published in our latest product leaflets, as well as in our new app, the Tire iBrochure. We will also have several tablets available on
stand so that visitors can try the new interactive documentations, first hand.” Engineered according to the company’s innovative BlueTireTM technology, TM3000 is a new generation of radial tire designed for harvesting applications. It has been developed to provide
farming professionals with improved productivity, while fully respecting the environment. During the exhibition, Trelleborg will introduce the first size in the new range, the IF 800/70R32 CFO. The range will then be expanded over the coming months with three new sizes: IF 800/65R32 CFO, IF 800/70R38 CFO and IF 1050/50R32 CFO. Versatile in several applications, products in the TH400 range are able to operate on the toughest of soils, while coping with the most demanding conditions. The range, which has been designed for use on the latest generations of telescopic handlers, backhoes and mini loaders, provides high stability even when booms are fully extended to handle heavy loads. Trelleborg’s popular 900/60R32 TM2000 for harvesting applications, 750/60R30.5 Twin Radial, 710/70R38 TM800 featuring a new tread design and 710/70R42 TM900 High Power, will also be featured on stand.

Fuel efficiency in transport applications
Following an extensive road test conducted by technical experts from the Schleswig Holstein Chamber of Agriculture in Germany on behalf of John Deere, the company’s newly designed DirectDrive transmission with double clutch technology has proved to be a highly fuel efficient and time saving alternative to existing continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). Designed to complement the results of the standard PowerMix test, which focuses on field applications at speeds of less than 16kph, a road test was set up to assess the fuel and extra liquid consumption of three tractor makes covering four models from 237 to 261hp (maximum ratings), under varying load conditions. The 165km test track featured flat roads, junctions and hilly sections with slopes of up to 12 per cent. Before testing, each of the tractors was prepared in the same way, with identical tyre pressures and ballast. 28 28
The tractors were driven unladen and with an 18-tonne trailer filled with gravel, and four drivers from German contractors were hired to perform the tests. After each drive, the machines were refuelled with diesel and, except for the two diesel-only John Deere tractors, with AdBlue. Throughout the test, fuel temperatures and machine performance details were recorded, as well as tractor speeds and test track related data. In total, the operators drove more than 5000km to achieve reliable test results. Of the four machines, the John Deere 6210R equipped with DirectDrive recorded the lowest total liquid (diesel plus additive) consumption per kilometer in both categories, ie with and without the trailer. Total cost of the fuel used by the 6210R with its innovative transmission was five per cent less than the average cost of the combined fuel and liquid used by the four tractors.
Improving Efficiency While Tackling Climate Change: Borders Farmers Show Others How It’s Done By Moira Gallagher, Agricultural Consultant, SAC Consulting
The agricultural industry is helping Scotland to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. SAC Consulting (a division of SRUC) is working with Robert and Jac Neill of Upper Nisbet Farm, near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders to promote practical measures that can be made on farm to reduce greenhouse gas losses while benefiting the farm business. The Neills are part of the Scottish Government-funded Farming for a Better Climate (FFBC) initiative run by SAC Consulting. One of the things the Neills looked at in their first year as a FFBC climate change focus farm was onfarm renewables. An energy audit carried out by SAC Consulting’s energy specialist Jim Campbell identified that there could be potential to meet the farm’s existing electricity demand of around 5000 kWh/year from wind or solar photovoltaic energy. Potential sites suitable for a turbine were identified with reasonable exposure in the prevailing wind direction and far enough away from farm buildings and cottages. Using the national database provided by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Carbon Trust database it did look like the sites chosen
www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
had potential with annual wind speeds of 5.5-6.7m/s at range of heights above ground. The key recommendation was however was to carry out on-site monitoring. In partnership with their landlord’s Lothian Estate, the Neills erected an anemometer late last year and have been recording wind speeds for the last nine months. The information has been invaluable as it has recorded much lower speeds than predicted making any wind project at Upper Nisbet unviable under present conditions. The new grain shed and drier, which was used for the first time this harvest, has presented the opportunity to closely monitor energy usage. With the new weigh bridge Robert has been able to record crop tonnage and moisture removal against kerosene and electricity usage for each batch dried. The data will be used to inform efficient drier operation and will provide real information to compare this system against a potential biomass fuelled drying system, which even if not installed at Upper Nisbet will give useful information to other farmers thinking about installing a renewable system for grain drying. More information about Upper Nisbet and the other focus farms can be found at www. farmingforabetterclimate.org

CESAR security for Massey Ferguson tractors Massey Ferguson is fighting rural crime by now fitting the CESAR Security system as standard on all models from the MF 5400 Series and above. This added protection is proven to prevent theft as well as provide significant cuts in insurance premiums. “Agricultural machinery theft continues to blight the industry,” says Ben Agar AGCO’s Manager, Marketing Services for UK and Ireland. “By factory-fitting CESAR we are making a practical move to help prevent theft. We believe, as a manufacturer, it is important to act responsibly and introduce measures to help our customers to not only protect their investment, but also guard against the massive unseen costs that often follow machinery theft.” The CESAR plant and vehicle registration scheme is now standard on all tractors built in the Massey Ferguson Beauvais factory including all models in the MF 5400, MF 5600, MF 6400, MF 7600 and MF 8600 ranges. For further protection Massey Ferguson also offers the option of AGCOMMAND - a GPS and telemetry-based tracking and monitoring system. This protects against theft by automatically sending instant alerts to owners when a vehicle leaves or enters certain areas, as well as providing a comprehensive fleet management system. CESAR Industrystandard security: Research shows CESAR equipped vehicles are four times less likely to be stolen and six times more likely to be recovered if taken. The scheme provides highly visible, tamper evident triangular identification plates
containing transponders to warn away thieves. Other tiny transponders are also hidden around the machine, which can be located and read by special scanners. Hundreds of Datadots, with another unique number, are permanently concealed within the vehicle. These are virtually impossible to find and remove. Lastly, a forensic Datatag ‘DNA solution’, which is invisible to the naked eye, is applied to various parts of the machine and dripped into nooks and crannies. This permanent identification deters criminals because it makes it far more difficult to conceal the machine’s true identity. But if a machine is stolen, it is much more likely to be recovered and returned because Police forces around the country carry scanners to quickly check and identify equipment. Each machine is registered on a central database, with an emergency contact number.
One recent example is a machine that was recovered near to the docks by a Police Officer suspicious of the load. A quick call to the owner confirmed the machine was missing from the shed – saving the owner thousands of pounds. AGCOMMAND, an advanced telemetry system developed by AGCO can also be used to track, monitor and control vehicles using GPS and a mobile telephone link to the internet. This innovative system ensures owners know exactly where all machinery is at any time, night or day, as well as providing customers with a low cost, easy to use data recording and fleet management system. For iPhone and iPad owners, the system is even now easier to use with a new AGCOMMAND App, which can be downloaded from the App Store. The first level of the new telemetry system, AGCOMMAND Standard Plus can be installed on any self-
www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
propelled machine. The system constantly logs and transmits data relating to location, engine operation, ground speed and working status, which can be easily monitored from a PC or smart ‘phone or tablet. It will also keep owners and managers informed about routine maintenance requirements and this information can also be made available to the servicing dealer via a separate log in the AGCOMMAND server. All the data is recorded to common standards so it can be used by farm management software to create precise records and, for example, enable the calculation of operating costs. The vehicle’s position is located by GPS and this, along with operating data is recorded every minute by the AGCOMMAND AM50 module which then transmits the data by a standard mobile phone SIM card, via the GSM network to AGCO’s central computer server. 35

$*5, *$'*(76 Lely’s T4C management system connects new Lely Vector feeding system with Astronaut milking robot Dutch manufacturer of agricultural equipment Lely announces that its farm management system, Lely T4C, is now able to exchange information between its new automatic feeding system Lely Vector and Lely’s famous Astronaut milking robot. Linking feed data and production data offers farmers the opportunity to maximize the efficiency of feed and rations. Measuring the feed input from the start, combined with the production data from the milk robot, will lead to optimized milking production. The feeding frequency can be tuned as needed, concentrates can be added based on milk/
feed ration. All in all, the farmer can react much quicker while optimizing his feed management. In short; reduced feed costs, more milk! The Lely T4C – Time for Cows – management system is the only farm management programme developed specially for farms with robotic solutions. The system provides farmers all the information needed at hand to manage the herd in a time-effective way. It connects the Lely Astronaut robots and various Lely devices all in one system. The Lely Astronaut gives a lot of milk data on individual, group and herd level such as protein and fat content.
This data can directly be used to adapt the feeding program. The farmer is able to manage his complete farm from one central point and it allows
him to spend time on the cows that really need the attention. Lely’s T4C management software facilitates effective management by exception.

A Quarterly Income for 20Years! The Renewable Heat Incentive and You By Andrew Smith, Young & Partners The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – a government support mechanism for green energy – has excellent potential applications in the agricultural industry. The RHI scheme came into force in November 2011 and at its most basic provides a quarterly payment to the owner of a qualifying accredited scheme over 20 years. As with all “green projects it is very important that an informed and detailed survey is done before a technology is chosen, but many agricultural buildings and businesses lend themselves well to this type of project. A heat pump or a biomass boiler will produce a renewable heat incentive payment and useful heat for the agricultural business at savings on more conventional heating sources. The process of obtaining renewable heat incentive may seem a little daunting, but with appropriate help it actually follows a reasonably straightforward process. A project once decided upon should trigger an application for accreditation to the renewable heat incentive. That application can be submitted to Ofgem using an on-line account. They will consider it and will accredit it subject to validation of various details such as planning, bank information and whether the system chosen is eligible. Once the project is accredited and up and running data is submitted on a regular basis, and payments are then made quarterly under the renewable heat incentive. These
payments end after 20 years. The rates of RHI vary depending on, amongst other things, the type and size of the scheme. As a generic example, if you are spending of the order of £20,000 per annum on oil at, say, 57 pence per litre, and you install a heat pump you could expect an approximate net fuel saving in the order of £7,500 per annum, and a renewable heat incentive payment of the order of £16,000 per annum. The capital outlay of a typical scheme would be in the region of £65,000 which would give a return on investment of approximately four years. Solid biomass represents a key component of the ways in which the Scottish Government’s targets for increasing the level of heat to be sourced from renewable energy might be met. There is a considerably larger reliance in continental Europe on biomass for producing renewable energy than presently exists in the UK. The RHI applies to nondomestic commercial bio energy. It is a subsidy for the heat generated designed to compensate for the increased installation and operational costs that apply as against the use of fossil fuels. The tariffs payable vary among small, medium and large biomass schemes from 8.3 pence per kwhth to 1 pence per kwhth for the largest commercial schemes. A new scheme commissioned after 15th July 2009 with the solid biomass as its only primary fuel that uses liquid or steam as the
www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
delivery mechanism should comply with the RHI rules. The fuels which are “eligible include wood, logs, chips and pellets, straw and agricultural residues, food waste and paper and pulp residues from the paper industry. The heat generated must be to non-domestic premises, but where there are several units including domestic units the scheme should still be eligible. It can be used for space heating, trace heating of insulated pipework, heating water, and “industrial processes provided they take place within a fully enclosed, permanent building - which include greenhouses but not polytunnels. It is essential that appropriate advice is obtained at the outset and any scheme is properly designed, but if that is done, then this technology can save energy and represent a good return on investment. There are providers who will look at your business and its needs and design and build and operate scheme for you – or you can put a project together yourself. It is certainly worth looking at the RHI as a means of reducing your energy costs and obtaining a secure long term income. :g]k^p Lfbma bl A^Z] h_ K^g^pZ[e^l Zm Rhng` IZkmg^kl Zg] Z]obl^l hg k^g^pZ[e^l ikhc^\ml _hk eZg]hpg^kl% ]^o^ehi^kl Zg] _bgZg\bZe bglmbmnmbhgl )*-* -+1 ,111 aas@businesslaw.co.uk www.businesslaw.co.uk 39
FUTUREfarmer From trainee to dealership service manager, another New Holland Apprenticeship success story When Mitch Hallett left school in 2004 at the age of 16, he says he was pretty sure that he wasn’t going to get particularly good grades in his exams. The academic side of school hadn’t really interested him - but this didn’t put him off applying for an apprenticeship scheme with New Holland. Before his final term ended, Mitch applied to Ernest Doe & Sons in Rochford, Essex – his local New Holland dealership. He attended the interview and was offered the job. So, just two weeks after leaving school he began a new life as a New Holland apprentice. Today Mitch Hallett has risen up the ranks to become the dealership’s Service Manager and says he is very glad he took that initial first step: “At first it seemed quite daunting: I was a bit overwhelmed by all the machinery and what it all did, but I soon settled into it. The Apprenticeship Scheme meant that three times a year I went off for four weeks to college at Reaseheath in Nantwich in Cheshire. It was good fun – I really enjoyed the college social life
(and the college bar). I still keep in touch with some of the friends I made then. While we were at college we did basic training and different courses specialising in New Holland technology, such as hydraulics and electrics. Within about eighteen months I knew that I wanted to focus on combines.” “The scheme gave me all the basic knowledge I needed – but it also gave me great hands-on experience too. We even went down to Basildon for the specialist New Holland courses. We were shown around the factory – which was pretty impressive. After eight years I still enjoy what I do - although since becoming Service Manager there’s more paperwork - but I still get out to work on the combines from time to time.” “I’d say to anyone ‘Go for it!’ – definitely. It is ideal for someone who may not be academic, but enjoys handson training. It’s perfect for that. What you don’t learn in books you can learn from getting your hands dirty.” The three year New Holland course is run in conjunction with
New Holland dealerships right across the UK. It is designed to equip the apprentices with the latest industry knowledge and technical skills and at the end of the course, successful graduates return to their dealerships with a BTEC National Diploma in Landbased Technology. The specialist, semiresidential apprenticeship course is partly funded and run by New Holland, and involves an extra five modules specific to the New Holland range of tractors and harvesting machinery – modules that concentrate on areas such as hydraulics, diagnostics and electronics. Additionally, all New Holland apprentices are registered at Land-based Technician Accreditation (LTA) level one on joining the college, which gives further accreditation to their learning, and can be progressed throughout their career. When each apprentice finishes at Reaseheath they will have achieved LTA level two which covers hydraulics, electrics, engines, powertrains and electronic service tool.
The next step is for the newly qualified technicians to gain product knowledge and diagnostic skills which will enable them to become a professional LTA level three technician. The final step comes at LTA level four, Master Technician which they achieve when they can demonstrate a high level of product knowledge and diagnostic skills, as well as having a good knowledge of New Holland aftersales systems. For more information on the New Holland Apprenticeship Scheme, visit your local New Holland dealership.

The programme, “CDX: Hydraulics and Fluid Power”, was developed to meet a growing
worldwide demand for technical hydraulics training. It combines the subject expertise at Barony with CDX’s learning tools. Sales of the hydraulics course are now underway around the world and early indications are very positive for the product’s success. The judges felt that Barony Campus has responded well to the increasing significance of international projects and commercial work. They deemed the hydraulics programme to be innovative and have far reaching global success. Drew Easton said: “This award recognises how a specialist Scottish institution can reach out to a much wider, indeed global, audience by entering into strategic partnerships with the commercial sector.” Robert Mann, Global Business Development Manager at CDX, said: “I send my hearty congratulations to Barony
www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
Campus for winning this award. CDX is honoured to have been a part of this ambitious project from the start and to have worked with the talented group from Barony to bring the hydraulics course to light. This project is fine example of how Scottish colleges can capitalise on their talent, contribute to industry, and earn the financial and professional recognition for a job well done, and we’ll be toasting to our continued global success.” A team from Barony Campus attended the ceremony in Edinburgh this week where Sally Magnusson presented their award. Now in their 13th year, the Annual Awards present a unique opportunity to celebrate successes, reward achievements and showcase to the wider community the many outstanding projects and initiatives being delivered by colleges throughout Scotland.

Powered by a highly fuelefficient, 2.5-litre twin-turbo common-rail diesel engine, the
Isuzu D-Max generates 163 PS and peak torque output of 400 Nm from 1400 rpm and is
available with newlydeveloped six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions. Fuel economy has improved by 10 per cent over its predecessor, with the Isuzu D-Max recording figures of 38.2 mpg (combined). The all-new Isuzu D-Max pick-up has undergone one of the most comprehensive development programmes in the company’s history. Succeeding the hugely popular Rodeo, the Isuzu D-Max is the most efficient and most refined Isuzu pick-up ever produced, while retaining the legendary toughness for which the brand has become renowned the world over. It is also a highly capable load-lugging workhorse with 4x4 models certified to tow three-tonnes (braked) / 750 kg (unbraked), and a payload capacity of between 1,058 - 1,136 kg (depending on model). Vauxhall’s Mokka SUV The new Mokka SUV continues an unprecedented product revolution by Vauxhall and is set to make further waves with its bold, expressive design, advanced driving dynamics and technology. Mokka adds a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) to the Vauxhall portfolio, and into

the expanding compact SUV segment. Compact SUVs fall under 4.30 metres in length, distinguishing them from their larger counterparts. While many other segments are showing limited growth, the compact SUV market has grown by an impressive seven per cent (first half 2011 versus first half 2012). This rapidly growing segment, which includes the Skoda Yeti and the Nissan Juke and Qashqai, allows Vauxhall to break in to brand new territory. With a striking appearance, safe and spacious, the Vauxhall Mokka will appeal to a wide range of customers. Research has shown that the typical Mokka customer leads a very active lifestyle where leisure activities play a central role in his or her life. That is why the Mokka with its many optional extras, like the FlexFix bicycle carrier, is perfect for people who want to balance their busy daily lives with leisure activities. The versatile Subaru Forester & XV range The most popular cars in the Subaru range are the Forester, a compact SUV which blends family-car practicality with go-anywhere capability, and the all-new XV, a compact crossover recently awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating due to its go-anywhere All-Wheel Drive technology and commitment to passenger safety. Both cars also major on security, with a Thatcham Category 1 perimeter alarm and immobiliser, ensuring belongings are kept safe. Significantly, the XV also achieved a higher safety score for child protection than any other car that Euro NCAP has ever tested. A mainstay of the Subaru line-up is, of course the Subaru Forester compact SUV is one of the most useful cars on the road. While the Forester features raised ground clearance and estate car

practicality, it does without the weight penalties and extra running costs typical of a fullsize SUV. The result is a commanding car that drives like an agile saloon but offers the all-terrain

versatility of a larger car, while fuel economy of up to 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of just 158g/km for diesel models ensure the car needn’t break the bank. The Forester also benefits from Subaru’s All-
Wheel Drive technology, a high level of security and competitive insurance costs. Success for the Ford Ranger The new Ford Ranger recently

won the “International Pick-Up Award 2013” making it the third international award Ford has won this past year. Every member of the judging panel ranked the new Ranger as their number one choice; praising its performance on- and off-road, strong engine line-up, payload and towing capability, and safety. The new Ford Ranger won the “International Pick-Up Award 2013” award following extensive testing at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England, after which it was awarded 47 points – more than the combined number of points garnered by the second- and third-placed Isuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarok. The award was presented to Ford by jury chairman Pieter Wieman at the Fleet Transport EXPO 12 event, in Dublin. “The Ford Ranger is a great all-rounder, combining

the perfect blend of on-road comfort and stability with offroad capability,” said Jarlath Sweeney, the Irish judge on the panel of CV journalists that also serves on the “International Van of the Year” jury.
The Volvo XC range XC is Volvo’s cross country brand, offering comfort, practicality and all wheel drive when tackling bad weather. The XC70 offers a raised ride height, aiding driver visability, along
with Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake system, keeping both driver and passenger safe and secure, and with ample leg room passengers can enjoy a comfortable and relaxed drive to and from the airport.

The Volvo XC90 is known for its mix of luxury, generous leg room and impressive safety features. The car’s all wheel drive means that the driver is in charge at all times, giving both driver and passenger peace of mind that they will get to their destination safely and on time. To ensure the highest levels of passenger safety, all XC70 models feature Volvo’s City Safety technology as standard. By keeping watch on vehicles in front with the help of a laser sensor built into the windscreen and radar in the front grille, City Safety will automatically brake the vehicle if the driver does not respond in time when the car in front slows down or stops or if the driver is driving too fast towards a stationary vehicle. City Safety is fitted as standard in six of Volvo’s models.

achievement and testament to the dedication of our engineering team,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director. The all-new Range Rover further demonstrates Land Rover’s commitment to sustainability. It is 420Kg lighter than its predecessor and has outstanding results for occupant protection; achieving maximum points in numerous areas within the Euro NCAP tests. Land Rover is currently looking into new technologies for future models to improve Safety Protection even further - particularly Pedestrian Protection. See the Great Wall for yourself Great Wall Motor Company,
one of the most successful car manufacturers in China, has this year become the first Chinese automobile manufacturer to commence volume vehicle sales in the UK, with the launch of the 2012 Steed pick-up. On sale through a nationwide network of over 50 hand-picked Great Wall dealers, the Steed is a robust and highly practical pick-up, equally adept as a workhorse or a weekend getaway vehicle. Prices start at just £13,998 (CVOTR) for the generously equipped Steed S model, representing unbeatable value for money in the UK pick-up market. The Steed’s chunky appearance signals its

durability as well as its capabilities as a versatile load-lugger, both on and offroad. All UK Steeds are fitted with a newly developed 2.0litre, 16-valve turbocharged diesel engine. Offering ample pulling power, the powerplant delivers class-leading fuel economy (34.0 mpg, combined cycle). When the terrain gets slippery, the driver can engage the Steed’s ‘on demand’ fourwheel-drive system simply by pressing a dashboard button. Inside the four-door Steed’s generously proportioned double-cab body there is ample head, leg and shoulder room for the driver and up to four passengers while storage areas are plentiful. The Steed might be able to work hard, but it is not a stripped-down, utilitarian vehicle. No similarly priced pick-up on sale in the UK will rival its impressive tally of standard equipment. The Nissan Navara With its class-leading load bed dimensions, top power and torque and lavish specification, Nissan’s Navara brings SUV levels of refinement and performance to the market while still offering ‘go anywhere, do anything’ qualities. Navara was designed in tandem with the Discoveryclass Pathfinder SUV - and is built alongside it at Nissan’s NMISA plant in Barcelona. As

a result, the two vehicles share much of their mechanical layout and technical features, while Navara enjoys the same SUV-like comfort and sophistication, something that should appeal to those customers who are more likely to use their Navara in the pursuit of their playtime activities. Nevertheless, beneath the chrome, Navara is still very much a workhorse, and those same customers will also appreciate the combination of the tried and tested four-wheel drive system and a versatile load area. The compact Suzuki Jimny Compact, practical and superb value for money, the Suzuki Jimny is a 4x4 for all. It is fun to drive, has a new fresh face and backs up its chunky looks with honest performance off the beaten track as well as in the cut and thrust of urban traffic. The new face includes an updated front bumper, grille and new bonnet design incorporating a central air intake and repositioned front fog lamps. These updates have resulted in the Jimny growing 50
in length – but only by 30mm, ensuring Jimny remains the most compact SUV on sale in the UK. Jimny has a neat and practical look and since sales began in 1998, it has accumulated a loyal following of repeat customers who enjoy a quirky alternative to a supermini or crossover SUV. The Jimny exceeds expectations off road whilst still being more than capable in any urban
area, ideal for customers who want the best of both worlds. The new BMW X5 BMW’s class-leading Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X5, has received an array of design and engine changes offering even greater performance and lower emissions, whilst also updating its look. Three new engines were designed for the xDrive30d,
;FQ Q.

xDrive40d – replacing the xDrive35d – and the xDrive50i – replacing the xDrive48i. All of the new powerplants now meet EU5 standards. The entry level xDrive30d has been upgraded to provide increased performance, making this the first conventionally-powered luxury SAV to record a sub 200g/km CO2 reading. The engine consumes just 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits only 195g/km of CO2 - a 10 per cent improvement - yet produces 245hp, up 10hp on the previous xDrive30d. Acceleration to 62mph now takes only 7.6 seconds – a six per cent improvement over the previous model. The replacement of the twin-turbocharged xDrive35d with the new xDrive40d sees an improvement in emissions of 10 per cent, emitting only 198g/km CO2 whilst delivering 37.7mpg on the combined cycle. In true EfficientDynamics style the performance of the car has also increased. The zero to 62mph time is now just 6.6 seconds, down from 7.0 seconds, courtesy of a 306hp output, 20hp more than the outgoing engine.

Redshank traditional kiltmakers offer a unique, bespoke and unrivalled service if you want a truly Scottish heirloom kilt. They source 100% wool and silk fabrics from Scotland’s finest weavers and commission kiltpins, belts and sporrans from Scottish craft businesses to make sure that your kilt makes you feel special, knowing that you look good, whether you need to be formal or casual. Redshank made the outfit Greg Wyse wore when he married Emma Thompson – a handcrafted kilt in Isle of Skye tartan Harris Tweed woven by Donald John MacKay of Luskentyre Harris Tweed. They also made Greg’s black nappa leather waistcoat, silk shirt, belt and sporran as well as his kilt
socks, handknitted in Harris wool. More recently, Redshank supplied the blue herringbone tweed kilt to be worn by Malcolm McDowell in the film Monster Butler. As an independent kiltmaker, Redshank can buy from all the Scottish weavers and have access to a wide range of tartans or they can have a rare tartan woven or can design a tartan or tweed specially for you. Recent customers include the Clan Claus Society (world headquarters in Ohio) with their Claus of the North Pole tartan. It’s red, green, white and gold and Clan Claus members wore kilts in the tartan at this year’s convention in Santa Claus, Indiana.
Redshank have also designed tweeds and tartans for a wide range of customers ranging from The Isle of Eriska Hotel in Argyll to the Big Sur Vineyard in California.
With an extensive stock of tweeds including Harris Tweed, they also make field coats, shooting jackets, breeks, plus 4s, coats, skirts.
