BEFORE THE FIRST BRUSHSTROKE Your guide to the three Ps: prepping, priming and painting Shortcuts are great for avoiding traffic or beating video games, but not so much for painting. In fact, no matter the size of the painting project, its success really does depend on how much time and effort is put into preparation. There’s simply no way around it.

BEFORE YOU PRIME: PREPARATION TIPS • Before you begin, move all furniture out of the room. Larger items can be placed in the center of the room and covered with a plastic or canvas drop cloth. • Take down any pictures, wall hangings or removable fixtures as well as the nails holding them up. This is also the time to remove electrical plates and switch covers as well as air vents you don’t want to get paint on. • Scrape off any loose, flaky paint. Patch any holes and repair any other imperfections with a spackling compound. Allow to dry and then sand down until the surface is smooth. • Clean the walls with a sponge and TSP (Trisodium Phosphate should be used if the walls are greasy, i.e. in the kitchen) or a mild cleaning solution of water and detergent. Rinse the sponge frequently and repeat as necessary. Once dry, go over the surface with a microfiber cloth or a trap-and-lock style duster. • Collect and assemble all of the tools and supplies you’ll need for the job: paint, stir sticks, drop cloths, brushes, rollers and painting tape.

BEFORE YOU PAINT: PRIMING TIPS

Primer is the essential foundation of every paint job. It helps paint to adhere to the surface by making it more “accepting” of the finish coat, it blocks stains and tannins from bleeding through; it penetrates and seals problem substrates; and finally, it improves the color performance and prolongs the durability and smoothness of your paint job. • It is especially important to use primer when painting new wood or surfaces that have never been painted before, or when repainting a surface that is uneven, stripped, or badly deteriorated (sand it down before priming). Prime the walls if a lighter color is being painted over a darker color. Semi-gloss paints need a coat of primer as they tend to absorb unevenly. • Match the primer to the job. Tinting your primer first will give you a head start when painting darker colors and will require fewer finish coats. • Remember that latex-based can’t be used over oil-based paint (alkyd). Ask the experts at Brackin Paint & Supply for advice on the best primer to use. • Lastly, be sure to start painting only after the primer has dried completely. Check the paint can’s instructions to find out how long to wait between coats.

PRO TIP: There are 2-in-1 paint and primer products available on the market, but it’s important to note that they work well on alreadypainted surfaces, not never-before-painted surfaces. While they may seem to eliminate a step, 2-in-1 products may require extra coats to give as effective coverage as the traditional primer and paint process. • Apply a high quality painter’s tape on trim, baseboards, window and doorframes to protect everything you don’t want to get paint on. • Secure a drop cloth to the floors to protect carpeting, linoleum or hardwood flooring.

When it comes to painting, not all weather days are created equal. As the days grow longer and the weather heats up, we naturally want to get more outdoor projects done around the house. However, summer’s extreme heat can have a direct effect on paint performance, as does the amount of moisture in the air and on the surface being painted.

• Try to choose days when the temperature is between 60°F and 85°F (15.5°C and 29.5°C) with low or moderate humidity.

High humidity is a factor in how paint dries, especially in oil-based (alkyd) paints. The humidity interferes with the paint’s ability to cure, delaying the drying time from hours to days. Acrylic and latex paints also experience slower drying times as it takes longer for water content to evaporate. The water in paint should evaporate at a faster rate than its solvents, otherwise the paint will not form a hard surface. Worst case scenario, you end up with paint that is weak and prone to cracking and peeling. Humidity is a bigger consideration on exterior paint jobs, as interiors can be climate controlled through air conditioning or dehumidifiers. Surfaces are drier and better protected from weather elements, but outside, wood tends to absorb the moisture in the air. This can compromise the adhesion of paint. The ideal relative humidity for painting is in the 40-50% range. Never paint when the relative humidity is above 85%. The paint will remain gummy and not solidify. Exterior paint is made to withstand the elements, but to be most effective, they need to be applied and dried in the right conditions. Here are a few tips to help achieve the best results when painting exteriors:

• If you are painting a coated (primed or previously painted) surface, wait until midmorning to start. If you are painting raw wood (which is highly porous and will retain dew moisture), wait until it is completely dry or

• Time your painting so that the paint has been applied before the day hits peak temperature, usually later in the afternoon. If you begin too early, you may have to deal with beads of dew on the painting surface. If you wait too long to start, heat may cause the paint to stop adhering properly and allowing moisture to get into uncured paint film. As the moisture evaporates, it can cause unwanted staining or bubbling.

One tip is to work your way around the house so that you are always painting in the shade. It’s a more comfortable way to work too. • If the temperature drops, that can cause problems too. The combination of lower temperatures and high humidity can create condensation on the paint surface, resulting in a marred finish.

SHEEN CHEAT SHEET A breakdown of the sheen spectrum from flat to high-gloss

From flat and matte to eggshell, pearl or satin, semi and high-gloss, it can be hard to know which sheen will work best for your space. For newbies who are just dipping their toes into the sheen pool, your best bet is to chat with the professionals at Brackin Paint & Supply, who can point you in the right direction, but before you go shopping it never hurts to have a basic idea of what you’re after. Generally speaking, the sheen spectrum — from low to high sheen — goes flat, matte, eggshell, satin or pearl, semi-gloss and high-gloss. Check out the sheen cheat sheet below to get the details on each of these options and see which one sounds like the perfect fit for your project.

SATIN OR PEARL: Has a lustrous finish, and is a good option for high-traffic areas due to its durability. It can also stand some exposure to moisture.

FLAT: Low-sheen with a non-reflective finish. Ideal for very low-traffic areas and ceilings.

SEMI-GLOSS: Super sleek, shiny appearance, and best for hightraffic areas and spots that get touched or bumped a lot, such as doors and trims.

MATTE: Low-lustre finish, relatively durable, easy to clean and hides minor surface imperfections well.

HIGH-GLOSS: Creates a bright, ultra-shiny and reflective finish that almost resembles glass. Suitable for surfaces in a high-use environment.

EGGSHELL: Has a soft, smooth appearance, very much like its namesake, an eggshell; slightly reflective. It’s a moderately durable sheen and is a safe choice for most types of walls in your home.

HERE’S A COUPLE OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN SHEEN SHOPPING:

More sheen means more durability: One rule of thumb is the higher the sheen the better it will be in a high-traffic area that requires a bit more durability. Flat and matte sheens that have little or no shine can be quite easily scratched and marked up, so bedrooms and home offices or similar, lower-traffic spaces would probably be the only places you’d want to use those sheens in. That said, some manufacturers have developed matte finish products with durability equal to that of their eggshells. Moderate sheens like eggshell, satin or pearl, and higher sheens such as

semi or high-gloss, however, can stand a lot of abuse, so they are great for busy areas. Moisture-prone areas such as the bathroom or kitchen are great candidates for paints made specifically for those conditions, ask your local expert. Sheen affects room mood: It’s important to base your sheen selection on the function of your room and using the sheen that will accommodate that, but you should also consider how it will look in that room and the overall feel you are after. For example, lower sheen paints soak up light, which helps hide imperfections, and high-gloss sheens do the opposite, reflecting light to make darker rooms feel brighter and lighter and emphasizing imperfections.

STEP BY STEP

CUT FLOWER SHAPES OUT OF THE FOAM. You can either just start cutting into the foam or if you prefer, trace out your design onto the back of the foam sheets and then cut. Have an array of sizes and shapes as it gives you the most flexibility when you’re printing. Once they’re cut, stick them to your blocks or plywood, and you’re ready to print. INK (PAINT) UP. Pour a thin line of paint at the top of your tray and use a roller to roll out an even layer of the paint. Once it’s fully distributed on the roller, roll the paint onto your flower block in an

even, generous layer. Because of the texture of the fabric, you want to really stamp into the fibers so having a nice amount of paint on the block will give the best results. If you happen to get paint on the sides of the block, just wipe it back with a paper towel to avoid it printing onto the fabric. PRINT. After applying paint to your block, the next step is printing. Pick a spot on your fabric where you want to start and apply firm, even pressure. Pull the block back up off of the fabric and admire your petally print! Reapply paint and repeat. The paint will dry relatively quickly so you can re-use the same blocks when you move on to your next color.

Outdoor Cushions BUILT TO LAST Outdoor cushions have advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years. From reticulated foam to the expanding variety of waterproof fabrics, there is an enormous selection in various price points to help add comfort to your backyard patio or deck.

FABRIC There are two main variations in outdoor fabric: solution dyed versus printed. Solution dyed is just as it sounds; the acrylic is dyed and then woven into various patterns and designs. Printed fabric has the pattern or design imprinted on top of a neutral base fabric. The biggest differences the consumer sees in these two options are found in price and durability. Solution dyed fabric has the higher cost, but it is more durable. Outdoor fabric comes in thousands of prints and patterns. Having your patio cushions recovered or rebuilt is a great way to bring new life to your outdoor decor.

CONSTRUCTION Foam cushions come in varied thicknesses. A typical depth is six inches, which offers plenty of lounging comfort. Reticulated foam is most commonly used in quality cushion construction. It is perforated, which will speed up the drying process—in the event the interior part of your cushions does indeed get soaked. Foam is often covered in a waterproof ticking, which further prevents moisture from getting inside. A six-inch cushion that does get wet should dry in two hours sitting flat. To speed up this process, sit the cushion on end!

STORAGE What do you do with all this stuff in the winter?! Cushions and outdoor furniture don't need to be put inside during our winter months. However, it is a good idea to protect them from furry friends who might make a cozy home in your lovely cushions!

s with many creative endeavors, what started as an inkling quickly became a career for stay-at-home mom Marlaina Teich. “I started thinking I needed another outlet,” she shares, recollecting life before starting her own firm. “All day we’re surrounded by the home, [and] I needed a career where I could make my own schedule… around soccer practices and baseball.” Marlaina was still completing her interior design degree when her phone started ringing: neighborhood friends requesting consultations. “It was a simple start like that. One referral led to another referral, and I started to build my business.” Now, Marlaina is widely considered one of Long Island’s top interior designers, with features from Fox News, NBC, and The CW. The positive press she’s garnered helped land her a role as president of the Designers and Builders Alliance of Long Island, where she built connections with fellow trades people united by their shared goal of giving back to their community. It was through the relationships built within the organization that she landed this particular

project—a referral made by fellow members (an architect and builder) who had already begun construction on the North Shore home. “The client was looking for a down to earth designer but one that could handle a largescale renovation. And they recommended me,” shares Marlaina. The clients were two doctors that lived a busy, fast-paced life and needed help bringing their traditional 1940s build up to date, while maintaining the integrity of the home’s traditional appeal. “They wanted to keep the same feel of the house, they just needed it to work for their family.” With three children of her own, Marlaina knew exactly what that meant. “When you get home, you want to have a calming atmosphere. You want it to be very functional. So we wanted to bring in a soothing color palette so it would encourage everyone to relax while they were at home.” Marlaina looked to the family’s favorite vacation spot in the North Fork for inspiration. “The water on the shoreline, the sand, the reeds in the water,” were all a jumping off point for the soft blues, creams, and greens that pervade the home. Because of these muted characteristics, she turned to other elements to maintain visual interest. This home operates as an ode to textiles: fabrics act as layers of warmth, softening up the cooler color palette and ensuring an inviting environment. This emphasis on material is no accident either. In Marlaina’s past life (prior to having three children), she worked in fashion, instilling in her a deep appreciation for all things texture. “The patterns of the area rugs are more modern, using abstract designs and large-scale geometric pattern. We also brought in some glass and metal for a more modern appeal.” Marlaina has a penchant for glam finishes, an instinct she tempered with this more traditional-leaning client. Instead, it was more about finding those subtle opportunities to play, while still respecting the home’s architecture. The home still had the original staircase intact from 1943, although its dimensions were nowhere near current standards. Marlaina and the team worked to update the structure and restore its former glory, a beautiful nod to the home’s history that sits right at the front entryway. The home’s layout was another challenge: the previous living room was essentially one large rectangle in need of more definition. The architect suggested a two-sided fireplace to separate the space, leaving room

for an entertaining area on one side and a formal living room (complete with a custom sectional) on the other. Marlaina flanked the fixture with French doors on either side, forming two functional spaces perfectly suited for a young family. “It really looks like it belongs there,” comments Marlaina. “They pretty much trusted me right from our first meeting on,” shares Marlaina (describing every designers dream client). “It’s a process right? It’s supposed to be enjoyable.” A sentiment true in theory, but rarely in practice when you’re dealing with the nitty gritty of a remodel. At one point, they had brought in an area rug for the clients to visualize in the space. Aware of the client’s traditional tastes while still understanding the value in pushing a little outside of the comfort zone to achieve the best results, Marlaina wanted to give the family the opportunity to see items they wouldn’t typically gravitate toward in context. “I just wanted to see her reaction. She said she didn’t like it at all. She walked out of the room then came back to me and said ‘you know what, I can’t believe it, but I love it!’” Ultimately, the marriage of trust, traditional appeal, and modern glam thrived in this partnership of designer, home, and client. Every decision was made with care and consideration, leading to a beautiful backdrop where life can unfold and inspiration can bloom. A well-appointed kitchen to function as the heart of the home. The perfect spot to debrief after a long day or enjoy a casual meal.

A long-forgotten property and a home gutted to the studs gets new life with a timeless touch.

THERE ARE SOME DESIGNERS WHO MANAGE to impart a distinctive mark on the spaces they touch. The faintest signature that runs through their body of work. This is certainly true for self-taught Sommer Tate of Folkway Design & Wares. Hers is a style that feels familiar and fresh all at once, carefully marrying the new with the old. This fine balance is what feels so compelling about her work. With no formal education and only a decade under her belt, it’s clear that Sommer was born with that expert eye—the one that knows just what a space needs. Sommer’s most recent project was in her native Dallas, and involved a long-forgotten home nestled on three acres of land that had been left to grow wild—a rare breed in an otherwise urban area. At the back of the property sat a creek flowing amongst mature trees and overgrown weeds. “Someone had bought it with the intention of fixing it up,” explains Sommer. “But I guess that didn’t happen.” The client happened upon the lot and saw the potential. Already gutted when Sommer had her site visit, it was easy to envision the possibilities. “The architecture was kind of interesting… I would call it a kind of Ranch house. It had multiple sets of French doors opening up to the porch… just an interesting layout.” These were features Sommer wanted to highlight in her design, opting to keep the home’s original floorplan intact. The scope of this project focused on finishes rather than furnishings. For Sommer, that meant “picking materials that, even if they’re fresh, are going to last. They are not going to feel dated.” This reaching for timelessness is distinct and clear throughout the home, with classic materials like brick and wood acting as anchors. The clients also had a penchant for mid-century modern design, a request that led to the home’s unique appeal. “We [brought] in a few funkier things, like the cement tile in the master bathroom,” shares Sommer. “We don’t want to take any kind of fads,” she explains, “but we want to bring in the old and the new. We have the green cabinets and that feels kind of new and fresh, but a brick backsplash feels like it could be there forever.” The kitchen acts as a case study in this balancing act. With the green cabinetry, you have an infusion of boldness that still feels perfectly at peace with the timeless traits of the other features. “I feel like colors can act as neutrals,” explains Sommer. “With paint and stains, we stayed creamy white throughout. I think if you keep consistency throughout a lot of the spaces, you can add these darker moody bold colors and it feels just kind of grounding rather than startling. It gives it some contrast.” With the kitchen, Sommer was also careful

to elevate the space with artwork and other wares. “it’s kind of an open concept house and you can see it from every room, there’s a big porch off of the back, and we wanted to make it feel less like a utility space and more something that flows right into being a living space.” Playing with opposites is an artform, and Sommer makes it all look easy. The aesthetics of a “Texas Ranch House and Mid-Century Modern design aren’t typically seen together, but in this space they are made to make perfect sense. “That’s the most fun part,” says Sommer, with genuine excitement evident in her voice. “Seeing a space—especially a house that’s just been sitting there— and having the creativity…to think, what makes sense in here, what feels right in here.” Once the project was complete, Sommer staged the home using her impressive Sommer's simple approach to styling keeps the home's natural finishes in the spotlight — a move that feels just right in the context of this space.

collection of antiques, items from friends’ homes, and pieces borrowed from local shops. “We’re always collecting! I think that’s why I love doing this job, it’s kind of my hobby at the same time, I’ll go out to an antique store if I’m looking for something fun to do.” Her final touch of old-world charm, delivered through accents and accessories, completes the scene, complementing the character of the home’s now timeless finishes and providing her clients a hint of direction for their own approach to styling. Because the clients were in step with every decision, there was no grand reveal, but we’re betting they’ll be enjoying Sommer’s work for decades to come. Sommer is a big proponent of open shelving in a kitchen, seizing the opportunity to showcase treasures from past lives and infuse personality.

Classic Mediterranean-style architecture meets the contemporary demands of a client that hails from NYC. Masterful design ensues, with the help of BANDD Design.

orn and raised in Austin, Sarah was eager to start her career in the fast-paced world of the entertainment industry after graduating from the University of Texas with her communications degree. She packed her bags and moved to LA, where she worked as an executive for Creative Arts Agency, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and SXSW. There, she met her writer husband and the pair eventually decided to relocate back to Austin. After another seven or so years spent in the industry, she started questioning the creative itch she had always felt but had never quite been able to scratch. “One day I woke up and said, ‘What if it’s design?’ and I went back to school and got my degree.” (If only we could all learn to follow our gut like that!). Sarah’s courageous leap of faith paid off quickly. One month after starting a firm which she anticipated might function as a side hustle, she had enough business to quit her full time job. The following month, she hired her first employee. Now, BANDD Design is an award-winning firm and a team of ten with 120 projects under their belt. This particular project, a Mediterranean marvel with an epic view of Hill Country and downtown Austin, fell into her lap with similar ease. While she was working on a previous project, her team decided to test out a new marketing tactic, putting out a lawn sign on the properties of one of her project. The lawn sign was only up for a mere 24 hours (it was stolen, which is why this advertising technique was abandoned afterword), the client, a young family hailing from NYC in need of some interior direction, spotted Sarah’s sign and decided to get in touch. “That’s the first and only project we’ve gotten like that,” laughs Sarah, recollecting on the twist of fate. At the time, the family was still in a rental home, so BANDD’s early involvement allowed for maximum impact. They set to work trading inspirational images back and forth and getting to know the personal style the clients wanted to achieve. “We typically call this a design discovery,” explains Sarah. “We want to make sure we’re speaking the same…language.” The clients also came with a lot of their own furnishings, and although they weren’t necessarily keen on keeping it all, this helped give Sarah and her team a baseline understanding of what they were typically drawn towards to work with. The assessment helped determine the direction and approach BANDD took with their work, an aesthetic Sarah describes as a mix of “traditional, classic, and contemporary.” While architecture rendered in the Mediterranean style yields plenty of character (hello archways!), Sarah cautions about its tendency to overwhelm with its ostentatious detailing. “We wanted to quiet everything down,” she explains, “softening the edges of some of the curves. It wasn’t necessarily about taking anything away but just pairing it back and refining it a little bit.” The best example of this is the fireplace, which Sarah calls the home’s defining feature. In its original form, it was “super ugly” as Sarah puts it bluntly. “It had lots of arches and weird mantels and niches that just didn’t make sense. We picked out the detail and softened it, brought in some cleaner materials so it felt updated but it still played into the architecture of the home.” The result is a streamlined but still sculptural fixture that stretches up to meet the ceiling, defined further with a subtle color block of a muted green paint. Another challenge in the main living room was the grandiosity of the ceiling height (talk about first world problems!). Although a stunning feature, the formality of it didn’t mesh with the client’s more casual and youthful

sensibilities. “We wanted it to be livable, so we brought in more of that comfort and personality.” With so much open space to fill, Sarah played with color to inject life into the space. “I love color, but not necessarily the bright and bold colors that scream at you. I prefer to do it a little more quietly. The best way I’ve found to do that is by bringing it in through small touches and also through pattern. We play a lot with pattern, and I find that by using small scale pattern, they almost start to look solid and neutral, so it’s a really great way to balance out a muted color palette and marry those two things together without it feeling forced.” The space also incorporates plenty of variety in terms of materials: between matte black faucets in the bathrooms, gold-trimmed mirrors, and geometric tiling, the home achieves many things at once while still maintaining a cohesive feel. Mature and sophisticated, without losing the playful and youthful energy that inspired Sarah. The home has come a long way since it’s beige beginnings (evidently, the previous homeowner’s color of choice!), with Sarah calling it almost “unrecognizable” in comparison with its before images (she even startled herself when her marketing coordinator recently uploaded an image of the side by side fireplace update). The clients agreed, quickly falling for their new cozy abode. Although, there are still a few updates coming in the future, with the budget falling short of being able to incorporate a kitchen reno. Thankfully, the family have already enlisted the help of BANDD to tackle that project as well. “That’s always the biggest compliment — bwhen they want to keep going.” In the meantime, we’ll be looking forward to seeing the results of phase two! ristin Kostamo McNeil never imagined she’d be designing homes—never mind homes of this caliber. “I knew I wanted to be in a creative field,” she shares, recounting her early college years as an advertising student at Michigan State University. “I was a child of the 90s. I would pull ads out of magazines and plaster them on our walls.” The idea of solving problems through strategic communications appealed to her. But after developing a friendship with an interior design major, she knew she had to step in another direction. “I used to just go in her room and watch what she was creating.” After a year of completing the prerequisites, Kristin applied to the program and joined the small percentage of students accepted to the program. “It was like my Disney moment—the clouds parted and the birds started chirping. I thought ‘this is it!’” The following years were formative ones for Kristin, spent honing her skills and eating up every morsel of wisdom her professors would impart. “Once I figured it out, I just, there was no turning back for me. It was like blinders on running full speed.” Grateful to have found her true calling, Kristin worked in the industry for several years, relocating to San Diego from her native Michigan before ultimately starting her own firm in 2012: Anne Rae Design. Kristin and her design associate, Ivan Segovia Jimenez, were brought onto this particular project by the contractor, a frequent collaborator of Anne Rae Design’s. Immediately, the pair began reviewing architectural plans previously drawn up, paying close attention to layout to quell concerns brought up by the clients, who were particularly keen on achieving symmetry in the kitchen remodel. “They are entertainers, they love to have people over, they love to have parties… and their kitchen before was tucked up toward the garage, it was like a little black hole. It was cramped, it wasn’t functional for a family with two young kids.” Keeping in mind the clients’ love of cooking, Kristin decided to swap the location of the kitchen with the family room, giving way for the view to be seen from the heart of the home. “We did these doors that she could open wide up and it really brought the outside in.” To further facilitate the flow of life her clients imagined in the space, she replaced the originally planned dining table for a second island—a move that allowed for maximum utility (and plenty of drawer space for storage). The clients had also requested an authentic, artisanal styled pizza oven, which sits directly opposite the 60-inch range (the biggest Kristin has installed to date). Thankfully, the way the oven was positioned lined up with an outdoor fireplace, so there was already a cavity to work with. These two key features (the range and the oven) work to balance one another and anchor the space. “Immediately [after completing the renovations] they started having people over and there would be pizza nights on Fridays, people just mingle in and out.” The problem solving aspect of design is what truly feeds Kristin’s passion that she first discovered as a college student. “Coming up with solutions that make a space really functional,” is what drives her. In addition to these technical aspects, the couple also wanted to infuse the design with pieces of their heritage to help it feel uniquely theirs. The wife is from Poland, and had spent decades collecting the white and blue pottery pictured on the FA L L 2 0 21

shelves in her trips back and forth from her homeland. Kristin borrowed influence from the collection, opting for a softer shade of blue for the tiling of the backsplash. Paying tribute to the husband’s Italian roots, Kristin introduced a current of European style into the home’s finishes. Artisanal features and an old-world charm is infused throughout with rough-cut stones surrounding the range alcove and reclaimed beams. Because these features have such a presence in the space, she was careful to execute them using a subdued color palette. When you’re operating within a farmhouse framework, it’s easy to fall into cliches and tropes—a common problem with the aesthetic that results in a design that feels derivative—the opposite of the bespoke vision the clients were hoping for. To combat this tendency, Kristin focused on creating character through subtle touches rather than obvious thematic cues. “We have elements that you see in a lot of current farmhouse spaces,” acknowledges Kristin, “[but it’s about] pulling details that feel authentic rather than massproduced. It keeps it feeling unique and not too contrived. We let the elements—the textures—really sing.” Operating with authenticity at its core, the finished design reflects the personalized approach Kristin took, carefully considering every detail at length (they had several meetings dedicated to drawer organization alone) and incorporating as much of their own personal stories into the fabric of the home. It was finished right before the holidays, giving the homeowners a chance to entertain in their newly minted space. “They opened up those back doors, and she said it was perfection.” And with the attention Kristin paid to longevity, there’s no doubt they’ll be hosting the holidays for many happy years to come. The blue and white pottery featured on the shelving here was a part of the homeowner's personal collection, which was brought back trip by trip from her native Poland. The vessels helped determine the color palette's direction, bringing a touch of her old home into her new one.

TOMATO SALSA 8 pounds ripe red tomatoes 2 cups seeded green peppers 2 cups chopped white onion ½ cup lime juice ½ cup white wine vinegar ⅓ cup seeded and finely chopped fresh jalapeno chili peppers ⅓ cup tomato paste 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground pepper 1. Seed, core and chop tomatoes (you will need 15 cups). 2. Add tomatoes to a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook 1 to 1 ½ hours or until thickened. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bring back to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Ladle hot salsa into 5 hot, sterilized, pint canning jars leaving ½ inch head space. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw bands. 4. Process filled jars in a boling water canner for 15 minutes. Start timing when the water comes back to a boil. Remove jars from canner and let cool on a wire rack. Wipe dry and store in a cool place for up to one year. Makes 5 pints

CORN RELISH 18 to 20 ears of corn 4 cups chopped red pepper ½ cup chopped white onion 2 cups white wine vinegar 1 ½ cups sugar ¼ cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons pickling salt 2 teaspoons celery seeds 1 teaspoon dry cornstarch 2 tablespoons cold water 1. Remove husks and silks from corn. Cut kernels from cobs (do not scrape). You will need 8 cups. 2. In a large pot, combine corn, peppers, onion, vinegar, sugar, celery seeds and pickling salt. Bring to a boil and lower to simmer. Uncover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. In a small bowl stir together cornstarch and water; add to corn mixture. Cook 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. 4. Ladle hot relish into hot sterilized pint canning jars, leaving ½ inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw bands. 5. Process filled jars in a boiling water canner for 15 minutes. Start timing when the water comes back to a boil. Remove jars from canner and let cool on a wire rack. Wipe dry and store in a cool place for up to one year. Makes 5 pints

GRAINY MUSTARD ¾ cup white wine vinegar ½ cup yellow mustard seeds ⅓ cup brown mustard seeds ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1. In a medium bowl, combine vinegar, mustard seeds and salt. Let stand 24 hours at room temperature. Add brown sugar to mustard seeds. Transfer mixture to blender or food processor and blend for 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down sides until you reach desired consistency. Mustard will remain slightly chunky . 2. Spoon mixture into three 6-ounce sterilized canning or snap lid jars. Store in refrigerator up to 4 months.

RASPBERRY JAM 9 cups fresh raspberries 2 ½ cups sugar ½ cup fresh lemon juice 1. In large heavy bottom saucepan, gently mash raspberries to just break them up. Add sugar and lemon juice. Stir saucepan over low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high and bring to rolling boil; reduce to medium heat and cook 10 minutes. Remove from heat and skim off foam. 2. Ladle hot jam into 7 hot sterilized ½ - pint canning jars, leaving ½ inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw bands. 3. Process filled jars in a boilng water canner for 10 minutes. Start timing when the water comes back to a boil. Remove jars from canner and let cool on wire rack. Wipe dry and store in cool place one year.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CANNING Creating customized labels and stickers for your preserves is as easy as can be! Start with a trip to your local business supply centre or craft store and pick up some pre-cut labels or stickers. After that, head on over to www.dafont.com to select a couple of fun custom fonts —they're all free on this site. For these labels we used a little magic to print them - if you're going to try this be wary of the dreaded paper jam. We printed out a test sheet from our layout program, and then adhered our labels with removable tape to the printout so we knew that the area would line up, and ran them through a second time. Voila! Custom, printed labels. We then got creative with raffia, burlap and gift bags to complete the look. Receiving something homemade as a hostess gift is always such a treat! Better yet when it looks like you picked it up at a posh shop.

PRESERVING FOODS There are two basic methods to try: Boiling water baths are best for strong-acid foods such as fruits (including tomatoes), vinegary foods (pickles and relishes) and cooked sweet jams, butters and conserves. Pressure canners are needed for low-acid foods (anything with a pH higher than 4.6) such as vegetables, fish, meat, soups and sauces. It brings foods to a temperature high enough to kill the botulism spores that grow in a low-acid environment. Some helpful canning hints and tips: • Always follow up-to-date recipes and don’t change a recipe. It is important to be exact. • Choose produce at its peak – vegetables that are just mature, fruits that are just ripe. Pectin looses its gelling ability and acid decreases when fruit is overripe. • Use a stainless steel or enamel boiling canner. • Keep everything clean. Wash produce and wash and sterilize jars and lids. • Be sure jars and lids are in good condition and free of chips and scratches. • Work in small batches.

STEP BY STEP...

1. PREPARE JARS AND LIDS. Wash jars, lids and bands in hot soapy water. Rinse well and drain. Place lids in a small saucepan and cover with water; simmer until ready to use. Do not boil as this may break the seal. Sterilize jars by filling a boiling-water canner about 2/3 full of water. Fill jars with hot water and lower into canner, making sure they are covered by at least one-inch of water. Bring water to boil and boil for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and lift out to dry.

2. FILLING JARS

Use a sterilized wide-mouth metal funnel when filling jars to avoid spilling food on the rim. Always leave room at the top of the jar to allow for heat expansion. Leave ¼ inch headspace for jams, jellies, marmalades and conserves and ½ inch for pickles and relishes. Use tongs to remove lids from simmering water and dry with a clean towel. Top jar with dry lid. Screw band over lid until just secured. FA L L 2 0 21

3. PROCESSING Arrange jars in canner. Do not let the jars cool as they could crack. Make sure cans are covered by at least two inches of water. Cover pot with lid. Bring water to a boil and start timing. Turn off heat and lift out and dry. **Note have a kettle of boiling water handy in case you find you miscalculated the amount of water needed.

4. TESTING SEALS Test seals by pressing on top of each lid. It should be tight to touch and slightly indented. If the lid makes a noise then the seal is not strong enough. You can also unscrew the band and pick up the jar by the edges. If the seal breaks then store jar in the refrigerator.

5. STORING

Keep jars for up to one year in a cool, dry place. When opening jars check to make sure contents are not moldy or foul smelling. When in doubt - discard jars.

traddling the three states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming sits the vast and wild landscape of Yellowstone National Park, the first in the world to be given such a title. Spanning two million acres of mountain wilderness (the largest in existence to date), Yellowstone was signed into federal protections on March 1st of 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant. Their intent was for the land to act as “a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit of the enjoyment of the people” a statement that can be found engraved at the highest point of “Roosevelt Arch,” which welcomes guests at the entrance to the park. This legislation spurred a global movement aimed at protecting the world’s most precious areas, distinguished by their rare geological features, abundant wildlife, and natural beauty. The United States of America would go on to designate 58 more sites as national parks—that’s over 84 million acres of public lands upon which Americans and tourists alike can roam free. Yellowstone may be a relatively recent attraction to the modern world, but its history goes back millions of years, beginning with a volcanic explosion 2.1 millions years ago that covered the region in ash— among the largest eruptions known to date. This event shaped the epic landscapes and features of the park: with a giant reserve of magma toiling beneath the surface, hydrothermal marvels like hot springs, geysers, and mud pots are staples of this expansive wilderness. Over 4 million visitors flock to witness the park’s unique hydrothermal wonders and abundant wildlife annually. In fact, the park’s wild roaming bison are the only free-ranging herds remaining of the hundred that once covered the Great Plains. The park is also home to 285 species of birds, several families of grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and over 1000 different kinds of plant life.

Although the rugged landscapes of Yellowstone conjure scenes of cowboys and cattle (perhaps especially so if you’ve seen Paramount Network’s latest family drama of the same name), it’s actually the American Indians who have the deepest connection to the park. According to archeologists, the oldest artifacts date back 11,000 years, and it’s estimated that 26 American Indian Nations and cultures have traditional ties to the region. It’s likely these ancestral tribes hunted, fished, and gathered among the lakes, rivers, ranges, and trees, using its thermal waters as key components of their medicinal and religious ceremonies. There are oral histories in circulation today that situate Salish ancestors in Yellowstone as early as 3000 years ago, but in the 1600s, shortly after many North American tribes began acquiring access to horses and travel became more accessible, more tribes began traversing the landscape, with Lakota Sioux beginning their exploration of the land in the 1700s. By the late 1800s, fur traders and other explorers began noting Yellowstone’s exceptional magnetism and iconic landscapes, sparking interest in the wonders of the west. In 1863, gold was struck, sending a surge of excitement throughout the country and attracting prospectors who hoped there were more riches to be found. The enthusiasm rippled throughout the nation, perking the ears of the Pacific National Railroad, who thought an attraction like Yellowstone might help advance their plans of western expansion. The company sponsored the first formal expedition (the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition) in August of 1870, bringing along photographer Thomas Moran, who was able to capture the attention and imaginations of the world with his vision of Yellowstone. It was thanks to this expedition (and the photographs taken throughout their travels) that congress was able to understand the true magnificence of the park’s allure.

Now, the park is open for Americans and tourists alike to roam its tremendous valleys and mountains. Creeks running rampant throughout the land, geologic marvels and bewildering beauty that feels so much bigger than dirt and rock. The wonder of the west evokes the image of a way of life that feels foreign in today’s fast-paced world. Its charm reminds us of the privilege we share in enjoying these public lands and the responsibility we have to continue to protect them. If you’re heading to Yellowstone, don’t forget to stay in the moment. The simple pleasure of existing at the same time, in the same place, as something so massive and sublime. Embrace that feeling of insignificance, telling you your problems are just as small. Let yourself feel the wind on your face and the sun on your back, and plant your feet firmly in the ground: the land that thrived thousands of years before you and will continue for a thousand more. LAMAR VALLEY

A trip to Yellowstone would not be complete without some aimless wondering through Lamar Valley, where all sorts of wildlife can be spotted roaming its vast hills. Although often overlooked by tourists, the sprawling landscape is just the breath of fresh air you need (and it’s relatively scarce in terms of crowding as well).

GRAND PRISMATIC SPRINGS

One of the region’s unique hydrothermal events spurred by previous volcanic activity. Around the edges of the pool sits a multi-colored bacteria (which cannot cluster in the center due to scorching temperatures), producing a rainbow-like effect. Although invisible to the naked eye, at the center of these blistering springs sit billions of organisms called thermophiles.

OLD FAITHFUL GEYSER

Located in the state of Wyoming and named during the iconic expedition of 1870, this geothermal features spews roughly 1000 gallons of scalding water approximately every hour, reaching heights of ninety to one-hundred feet in the air. Because of its predictable nature, the explorers and company gave it the fitting name of “Old Faithful”.

HERITAGE AND RESEARCH CENTER

Located near the north entrance of the park, the Heritage and research center is a great place to visit if you’re keen on learning more about the origins of the park. Here, you’ll find museum collections, archives, a research library, an archeology lab, and a herbarium.

MORNING GLORY POOL

Another geothermal sensation, the Morning Glory Pool is often referred to as the “Fading Glory Pool”, since it’s been losing its vibrancy throughout the years due to guests of the park throwing objects down its seemingly infinite center depth. Despite this, the pool is still a must-see.

THE GRAND CANYON OF YELLOWSTONE

This stunning spot is rated Yellowstone’s number one attraction on Trip Advisor. Over 24 miles long and 1200 feet deep, there are multiple look-out points to see, but one in particular stands out above the rest. Artists Point, aptly named for its ability to move and inspire, is located on the South Rim and provides a breathtaking view of Lower Falls (which often sports a rainbow at its base).

Coveted for the durable, anti-microbial, and water-resistant properties of wool, the company produced their blankets, robes, and shawls for Indigenous tribes, forming deep connections with the Native North American population, taking special care to learn about the customs, mythologies, and traditions of the people to better provide for their preferences. This knowledge informed the iconic designs that put Pendleton on the map. Today, they stand true to their roots, giving back to Indigenous communities and celebrating their deeply intertwined heritage. Their geometric motifs (hallmarks of Pendleton) capture the spirit of the west in timeless fashion.
