correspondent for 15 years and then edited the Ski Club of Great Britain’s magazine Ski+board for 13 years until 2014. In 1994, he skied every day of the year in 240 resorts in 13 countries and has now skied a total of 729 resorts, including ski areas in all 38 of America’s ‘skiing states’.

Junior Ski Championships in 1984 before continuing to represent Great Britain at five Winter Olympics before retiring as a professional skier in 1998 and commencing his television career presenting several ski-related programmes. He has tackled the Arctic Circle Race and survived a night in a snow-hole without food, water or a sleeping bag.

Clare Meaney has been skiing since she was 15 years old and enjoyed coaching youngsters at The Snow Centre for many years. Writing as a freelance journalist for several online publications, Clare joined Consensio in 2013 and brought the concept of a lifestyle magazine to the company the following year. Following a serious ski accident, Clare continues to be involved in the production of the magazine.

Felice Hardy started work in illustration before moving into journalism by chance, when offered a job at Vogue magazine. Felice then went on to become a travel writer, touring the world over the next 30 years for a huge variety of publications including The Guardian, Independent, London Evening Standard, Country Life, Condé Nast Traveller and BA Highlife magazine.

Gabriella Le Breton has been skiing since she was two and a half and writing about skiing for nearly a decade. She contributes regularly to national newspapers and magazines including The Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, Condé Nast Traveller and Vanity Fair and is the author of ‘The Stylish Life of Skiing’ and ‘The Ultimate Ski Book’.

Henry Schniewind

has had some of the best moments of his life whilst off-piste skiing, which is why he started Henry’s Avalanche Talk. His aim was to help people have more fun off-piste by keeping safe. In his training, he clears up misconceptions about off-piste and avalanches in the hope of making off-piste skiing more fun and accessible.

Michael Cranmer is an award-winning freelance travel writer and photographer specialising in skiing. A former qualified instructor, he now spends his winters sampling a wide variety of resorts. “Courchevel is like a magnet to me,” he said. “No matter where I go, no matter how good the mountains, Courchevel is still my favourite.”

Neil English is in his 23rd year as specialist ski/ travel correspondent for The Mail on Sunday, also writing freelance for numerous national titles, magazines and websites with joint sporting and epicurean interests in golf, cycling, hiking and all things gourmet.

h my goodness, how times change – even if words stay the same! In the modern 21 st

century world, the word chalet has come to mean the ultimate in luxury mountain accommodation. Certainly the chalets in Consensio’s brochure are outstanding examples. So you might be surprised to learn that the word chalet is derived from the socalled Arpitan speaking part of the Alps – mainly Savoie – and originally referred to the hut of a herder! I steer away from health claims, but my past includes studying nutrition, herbal medicine and qualifying as an aromatherapist, so health is always resonating in the back of mind when creating. I believe small amounts of good quality chocolate is good for you and if eating it makes you smile that has to be worth a lot, as your whole-body smiles too. I would encourage people to eat more dark chocolate than milk or white.

My Perfect Day FORMER BRITISH OLYMPIC SKI RACER GRAHAM BELL HAS CARVED OUT A CAREER AS A TELEVISION PRESENTER AND IS NOW A REGULAR ON PROGRAMMES SUCH AS SKI SUNDAY, THE JUMP, AND HIGH ALTITUDE. HERE HE TALKS ABOUT HIS LIFE IN SKIING AND HOW HE WOULD SPEND A PERFECT DAY IN VAL D’ISÈRE What is your first recollection of ski racing? Can you remember your first race? I started skiing aged five in Scotland with my older brother Martin, I don’t really remember my first ski race, but I would have raced first in ski school races, then, when I was eight or nine, we started racing with the Scottish Ski Club in the Scottish race series. Have you raced in Val d’Isère? I first raced in Val d’Isère in the British

since has matched that feeling. Having said that, I don’t really miss it because I still remember all the hard work that goes with being a top class athlete. Have you picked up any other languages during your career? German is the language of ski racing and I think even the French would admit that. I can just about get by in German and French, but nothing more than talking skiing and ordering the drinks. What do you think of the plans to redevelop Val d’Isère? Val d’Isère is one of my favorite resorts because it has a great ski area both on and off-piste, and the town has a lot of memories for me. It’s where I met my wife Sarah when she was working as a chalet girl back in the 1980s. Le Coin redevelopment looks fantastic and I’m sure it will be great when it is completed, but it will be a shame to lose some of the old bars and hotels that hold so many good memories.

Black Diamond Halo 28 JetForce airbag No, it’s not new, but it’s still one of the most innovative avalanche airbags around. The Black Diamond Halo 28 JetForce airbag uses a batterypowered fan instead of the heavy gas cylinder of other bags. The technology is the result of a collaboration between Black Diamond and PIEPS. It’s a repackable airbag with a rechargeable electronics system that lets you practice (free of charge). The Halo also features a dedicated tools pocket, helmet holder and ice-axe attachment for keeping your gear in place. The bags are available from £653 and for a list of stockists go to: eu.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_GB/jetforce-airbag

In&motion Airbag Vest Have you ever been hit by another skier or snowboarder, or bounced down a mogul-slope on your back? If the answer’s ‘yes’ then this could be the answer for you. In&motion’s airbag vest detects unavoidable falls and inflates in under 100 milliseconds in order to protect your hips, neck, back and vital organs before you hit the ground in a fall. It’s incorporated into specialist clothing by POC and Rossignol and launches later this year. Further details and prices will be available from In&motion on: www.inemotion.com/ski-airbag-vest/

Helping to reclaim lives GRAB YOUR SKIS AND TAKE THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE IN KLOSTERS

S

upporting Wounded Veterans is a UK charity set up in 2012 to help wounded campaign soldiers, including those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, to get back into training and work. These veterans are battling with both physical and mental injuries that in many cases have proved life-changing. Applications far exceed available places for the charity’s five needs-driven programmes which include: Skihabilitation: This shows medicallydischarged veterans, whether suffering from severe physical injuries, combat stress (PTSD), or a combination of both, that nothing is impossible. Skiing is one of the few sports in which, with expert help, almost anyone can participate – no matter

how severely injured they are. To date the charity has supported 111 veterans through ‘skihabilitation’. More than 100 applications are received each year but Supporting Wounded Veterans only has funding to support 30. Mentoring Programme: This is a structured programme giving each veteran a trained and dedicated mentor. The charity encourages their re-entry to civilian life and, if possible, employment. 89% remain engaged with a mentor for more than a year. Employment Programme: This helps Veterans understand the job market and their transferable skills, matching ability and creating opportunities with employers. As of 1 August 2017, 87% of veterans who have benefitted from these programmes are in full or part time employment/training/ occupation. Family Support Network: This network supports those closest to the veterans who are often overlooked. Family members can feel isolated; the provision of weekends away where they meet each other, allows them to form their own connections and friendships. Pain Management Programme (PMP): Pain management is a major barrier for many wounded veterans to become employed, or even to be able to partake in everyday life. Many veterans are prescribed significant medication that renders their entry into

74

employment a challenge. In 2016, in partnership with King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, Supporting Wounded Veterans started a veteran specific Pain Management Programme, the first of its type in the UK. It is delivered in tandem with the charity’s mentoring and training programmes to ensure that all of the complex needs of veterans are addressed. The aim is to put forward 50 veterans per annum and to achieve this the charity needs to raise in excess of £300K. For the veterans, it is the first comprehensive review of all their medication and it aims to improve the management of chronic pain and symptoms without which, for many, getting back into work would be impossible. Research shows that on completion of the programme 70% of the veterans are both more likely to contemplate employment and be on reduced medication. 100% would recommend the programme to others and claim that it has helped their overall pain management. It cost £15,000 to bring each veteran through all these programmes to reclaim their lives and livelihood. You can help ensure Supporting Wounded Veterans can continue this important work by taking part in The Business Challenge, a fun filled, adrenaline fuelled marathon and race which is taking place in Klosters from 18-21 January. You can find out more details by logging on to: www.supportingwoundedveterans.com
