National Association of Realtors® Annual Convention Since 1908, the National Association of Realtors® has held its annual conference in cities across the country. Chicago served as the original location, and in the 109 years since, Realtors® have travelled from Miami Beach to Milwaukee, Dallas, San Francisco, and everywhere in between to attend. To date, the national convention has been held in New Jersey just three times — 1919, 1935, and 1946. Aside from Atlantic City, no other New Jersey city has hosted the event. Since its inception, the convention has only been cancelled once, in 1944, to support the war effort.

Adelaide Shaffer Campbell As the Vietnam War raged on and the civil rights movement gained traction, Realtors® in the Garden State made their own history by electing its first female president. Adelaide Shaffer Campbell, whose married name was Adelaide Van Winkle, became the first female president of the association in 1968, 51 years after its inception. An accomplished Realtor®, she paved the way for numerous women after her in an industry that while previously dominated by men, now has a consistently higher female-to-male ratio. In her message in the 1968 convention program she says, “The theme, ‘Up, Up and Away’ is not merely an expression picked at random, but selected with the thought that we as Realtors® are advancing ‘up and up’ in all ways; that we are climbing the professional ladder in the eyes of all those who work with us; and that we will never lose ground in our aims to keep building a better organization.”

Past Presidents What does being named president of the association really mean? Well, for starters, it’s certainly not a vanity title. These top-notch Realtors® are volunteer members who dedicate countless hours to the many tasks associated with the role. But more than the hours they selflessly give, the president is tasked with leading the association for the year.

The president heads up the leadership team, comprised of the president-elect, first vice president, treasurer, immediate past president, and CEO. This team helps guide key association decisions, leads board meetings, and monitors the course association activities. But once a president’s term comes to a close, their work doesn’t stop. As immediate past president, they also serve on the leadership team, mentoring the incoming president and new leadership team members. As a membership organization, the role of past presidents can’t be underestimated. They are truly the foundation this century-old association rests on.
