relic as a doorway to a safe space for children where institutes fragmented, con ned accompanying caged of the building, they will have their world - a village types of schools under one roof where they can learn, space that creates an informal, inviting, playful and and thereby contribute to its active urban fabric.

This thesis focuses on the Karstadt Müllerstrasse - a traditional department store on Leopoldplatz, Berlin-Wedding. It was constructed in the 1970s, less than 2 Km from the Berlin Wall. Today Karstadt is on the verge of abandonment with its inward-facing spatial layout, endless deep oor plans and windowless facades, facing the mentioned challenges. This research explores the potential for repurposing Karstadt beyond its traditional retail function.

The concept of the design proposal portrays a vertical village which will accommodate three educational institutions: a primary school, a high school, and an integrated secondary school. The core idea is to create an interactive learning environment where students of all age groups reside within the same vertical village but attend separate schools.

The three school blocks, each dedicated to its respective age group, are connected by a plaza. This connected plaza acts as a forum, like a living room in a house, with its atriums that not only serve as light wells but also house gardens in the basement levels, contributing to the village's landscape. The cafeteria at the central plaza in the basement mirrors the village square, which will be the communal hub for students from all three schools. The plazas on each oor act as an extension of the village square.

The proposed design intends to promote a collective identity through shared spaces, promoting parallel learning, thus fostering a unique and interactive educational environment, acting as a village.

4th Floor

A double-height shared space owed throughout the whole building creating an In-between public space that maximizes connectivity and vertical communication.

A pivotal architectural innovation within the design is the introduction of a rotating core. The two L-shaped cores, housing re stairs and toilet facilities pivot at right angles on each oor, acting as a dynamic landscape for distinct spaces such as meeting rooms, o ices, lounges, seminar rooms, exhibition areas, cafés, and team collaboration spaces. This design eliminates the traditional front and back, establishing a public building with entries on all four sides.

Four community staircases, spanning from ground level to the top oor, simulate the atmosphere of a public street within the building. The strategic placement of a co-working café on the uppermost oor further ampli es this e ect. In pursuit of sustainability and zero-energy construction, the entire building, from oor slabs to columns, is crafted from timber. The use of a modular grid system ensures exibility in space utilization, complemented by removable curtain systems serving as partition walls. The new Bauakademie envisions itself as a performing art, with users acting as curators, actively designing and utilizing the space as per their needs.

The designed university o ers a platform to acknowledge the past by the involvement of present and future generations. The challenge was to accommodate a substantial program with both academic and residential facilities in a high contour site.

The design has been evolved considering two strong axis running from east west and north south. Strategically, the library, center of educational institution placed at the origin of the two axis and at the highest point of the site; keeping in mind the vision and power of knowledge. The university comprises three faculty buildings; faculty of Arts, Science and Fine Arts.

A Center For Mental Peace

Mental Health & Psychosocial Support Center

Type : Community Health Facility

Construction Timeline : Nov 2020 - Feb 2021

Completion Year : 2021

Built Area : 140 sqm

Budget : 34,700 USD

Location : Rohingya Camp 6, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Organization : BRAC (NGO)

Donor : UNHCR

Design Objective

The main objective of the project was to design an Eco friendly mental health center for the Rohingya refugees, living in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The targeted users of this intervention are the distressed refugees who are in need of psychosocial help through counseling. The goal of the project was to create an open space with the observed proximity where they can breathe freely and always come not only for mental support but also to relax to get rid of their overly populated congested shelter.

The MHPSS center is situated in the center of camp 6 at Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar. It is facilitated with training room, separate counseling room both for men and women and an admin o ice. The center was designed keeping in mind that structure should be as natural and soothing as possible. A center which itself heals the patients through is open and green courtyard.

This center was designed to be the platform where the FDMNs can come to breath escaping their densely populated habitat. A pitched roof courtyard has been integrated to make the space loftier and at the same time a touch of outdoor. Safety and security are one of the prime concerns in camp while maintaining a structure. So, an open space can only be achieved by introducing the inner courtyard which can be a prime breathing space not only for the patients while they wait but also for the care givers to break the monotony of the regular works.

As a temporary structure bamboo is used as the major component of the intervention as structural members, facades, door, windows and roof. The oor is made of earth guided by brick wall and N.C.F. oor nish which make the structure sustainable and reduce the carbon footprint. The whole structure has been built from the scratches by the FDMNs which creates the belongingness to that space that are they are longing for.
