Letter from the Mayor

Greetings: I am proud to present the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s 2014 Fall Guide. Fall is a busy season in Atlanta, as children return back to school for the start of another academic year. The arrival of cooler weather also means more enjoyable time to spend outside; and to enjoy the 33 recreation centers and parks throughout our city.

This fall, I am proud to announce the new Tots & Rec programming, which provides Atlanta’s youngest residents with athletic, cultural, and educational experiences that both parents and little ones can enjoy. Tots & Rec offers stimulating and interactive activities that are fun and educational for children ages five and under. As the school year begins, the Centers of Hope Afterschool Program is back to offer an environment where students can receive academic support, engage in health and fitness activities, and enhance their leadership and character development skills. The 14 afterschool program locations will provide snacks and hot meals to all registered students.

I am also excited to announce that earlier this year, I appointed Amy Phuong as the new interim commissioner for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Amy brings expertise from her current role as the City of Atlanta’s first chief service officer, where she helps to engage Atlantans in community service, and channels volunteers towards the greatest areas of need.

I am confident that Amy’s experience, vision and exceptional commitment to public service will help deliver on our promise to expand recreational opportunities and green space for our city’s children and families.

You can find additional information on programs and registration for programs and facilities on iPARCS (internet parks, arts & recreation customer service.) The iPARCS system easily and conveniently allows users to browse Department of Park, Recreation and Cultural Affairs programming, facilities and schedules. Users are also able to register and pay for classes and reserve space at our pavilions and fields online.

Letter from the Commissioner

Greetings: A memorable walk, that cold splash of water, the thrilling match point, new exposure to nature’s fun creatures, your very first picnic or 30th family reunion: these and many enriching experiences happen every day in one of our 500+ parks and recreation spaces all across this great city. As a native Atlantan, I’m honored and excited to serve as your new Interim Commissioner for the Department of Parks and Recreation.

First, I would like to thank and acknowledge my predecessor, George Dusenbury, for his leadership and public service to the Department and the city, and for spearheading many of the recent green space and recreation initiatives Atlantans are able to enjoy today. As we go forward, the Department is well-positioned to continue to fulfill Mayor Kasim Reed’s vision of revitalizing neighborhoods, providing quality of life amenities, and sparking excitement in the lives of Atlanta’s children and families.

Under my leadership, we will strive to be one of the best parks and recreation systems in the nation. We will do so by continuing to operate efficiently, provide youth development and community-centric programs, expand our parks presence, and increase the memorable experiences and playability of all of our assets.

As fall approaches, the Department of Parks and Recreation is excited for Atlanta residents to take full advantage of our enriching programming and facilities. Atlanta’s young people can gain exposure through career and academic-focused programs, character and leadership mentorship, health and fitness activities, and 21st century technology skills training. Through Centers of Hope, our youth will have invaluable and productive engagement led by our dedicated team members and community partners such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta and After School All-Stars.

We are also pleased to introduce our Tots & Rec programming; providing our earliest learners, ages 5 and under, with fun recreational and educational experiences. Atlanta’s tots can look forward to programs such as Aquatots, Tot Olympics, and superhero workshops. Atlanta’s adults can improve their wellness in a lively and enjoyable environment by participating in one of our many fitness classes such as Spin, I.Robics, Double Dutch Aerobics, and much more!

The Department of Parks and Recreation offers something that everyone can enjoy and fall is the perfect time of the year to experience all that parks and recreation has to offer. And we are always looking for suggestions so please drop us a note through iPARCS or with your local community recreation center.

Ball Fields and Courts The City of Atlanta has various ball fields throughout the city to reserve for league play or to play a pickup game. Below are the fees along with the complete listing of fields.

Random Selection Process Ball field reservations are released in seasonal increments. These seasons are released on-line on a first come, first serve basis at 12:00 noon on the dates listed below. During this 24 hour selection period, all ball field reservations must be made on-line, and cannot be refunded or exchanged for a credit except due to rainout or a similar situation rendering the field unusable.

Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum

The Atlanta Civic Center is comprised of two event spaces; a 4,600 seat Theater and the Piedmont Room (banquet/ meeting space). For information on the theater please contact the Atlanta Civic Center at 404-523-6275.

The Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum is a unique facility that features the world’s largest diorama depicting the historic “Battle of Atlanta”. This one-of-a-kind painting, measuring 348’x42’, allows visitors to virtually step back into time and experience the Battle of Atlanta that took place on July 22, 1864, during the American Civil War. The experience offers breathtaking realism enhanced by a foreground of three-dimensional figures and terrain. The presentation is accompanied by music and narration, available in five languages. The museum also features the famed “Texas” Locomotive of the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862. This season’s programming continues the commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.

Large Gathering in a Park/Greenspace A permit is required for any planned park gatherings lasting one hour or more with an anticipated attendance of 75 or more people. A Large Gathering application is not necessary if you are reserving only a pavilion, gazebo or ballfield.

Please be aware that a Large Gathering Permit does not grant permission to vend in a park, erect a tent greater than 10'x10', stage or moonwalk, or use alcohol. The permit fee is $50 (nonrefundable). City park users requesting a permit to utilize specific areas of park greenspace shall be required to pay a permit fee of $50.

Outdoor Wedding in a Park This permit is used when an outdoor wedding occurs inside a city park, in a location other than in a picnic pavilion, and where the wedding includes set-up or requires city services outside of normal scheduled maintenance. The permit fee is $50 (nonrefundable).

Special Use This permit is necessary if you plan to have generators (additional permit also required from Office of Buildings), amplified sound, tents larger than 10'x10' and/or portable restrooms at your event. The permit fee is $50 (nonrefundable).

Fees are payable by money order, certified check, personal check or major credit card. Cash is not accepted. The Department of Parks and Recreation reserves the right to refuse to issue any permit for an unauthorized use, and may revoke an issued permit at any time for an unauthorized use or violation of park rules, regulations, or city ordinances.

Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are accepted no earlier than 90 days (holidays and weekends included) prior to the event; 30 (holidays and weekends included) days if using portable toilets, amplified sound, tents and/or generators, and no later than 14 days (holidays and weekends included) prior to your event date if your event doesn’t require portable toilets, amplified sound, tents and/or generators. This will allow vehicles to unload and load only. Parking vehicles inside the park is not allowed per Atlanta City Code Sec. 110-3. Park attendants are available on a first come, first served basis based on availability and must be booked no later than 14 days in advance (holidays and weekends included). Park attendants are highly recommended at the following parks otherwise there is no vehicle access close to the pavilion: Grant Park, Piedmont Park, Perkerson Park, Mozley Park and Maddox Park.

Private Business in a Park This permit is used for individuals or organizations wishing to utilize a City of Atlanta park for private business purposes.

The private business may not operate in a park unless and until the application is granted and a permit is issued. A Private Business in a Park Permit does not grant permission to vend (no monies to be exchanged) in a park, erect a tent, stage, or moonwalk, or possess alcohol. No advertising/ marketing or staking of any kind is allowed in the park. A separate application must be submitted for each park that the business wishes to use. A valid business license and a $1 million insurance policy naming the City of Atlanta as an additional insurer is required. The permit fee is $1500 per park per year (nonrefundable).

Academic Enrichment During the academic hour, children will be assisted by a certified teacher along with recreation staff to complete homework assignments, participate in daily reading, as well as web-based math tutorial programs. Recreation staff work with a leading academic software provider for standard-based assessment, instruction, test preparation, and e-learning math programs to track our participant’s progress throughout the after school program. In addition youth are provided various cultural enrichment experiences from experts in the fields of art, drama, music, dance, martial arts, and more.

Technology Centers are equipped with technology to provide participants with access to computers and internet to complete research needed for homework and school projects. Students will use leading academic, standard-based assessment software programs to aid with core math and reading comprehension areas.

Youth Fitness & Health Recreation leaders will expose participants to a variety of physical fitness activities to engage and strengthen the body, address how to make healthy choices in nutrition, and teach them about non-traditional sports and careers in recreation to combat childhood obesity. General recreation is offered at all our centers; ranging from casual active play to organized athletics (additional fees, see athletics section). Some centers offer basic instructional swim classes. Multiple partnerships with leading agencies in the sports and fitness fields bring a variety of programs such as dance, martial arts, gymnastics, and tennis.

Character Development and Training Centers offer community service and character building programs and activities that allow youth to become civically involved in their communities and promote understanding of good citizenship in their neighborhoods.

Culture Club The Culture Club provides cultural experiences and academic enrichment for children between 5 and 12 years old that contributes to the growth and achievement of each individual. Each Culture Club participant receives a healthy light snack and homework assistance from the After School All-stars. Aquatics Aquatics Regular swimming can improve physical health by building endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It can serve as a cross-training element to regular workouts and can improve overall self-discipline, goal-setting, and create an increased sense of self-worth through regular exercise. Aquatic Centers provide residents and non-residents with an opportunity to participate in regular swimming programs, private lessons, and Drop-ins. Registration is available at each center for all Aquatics Programs.

Water Safety Courses Registrants for Water Safety Courses must have completed a Lifeguard Prep course, or be able to complete a Lifeguard Prep Skills checklist. For all review courses, the previously issued certifications must be present at the time of registration.

Students are responsible for study materials (course book and pocket mask) and reading course material prior to class time.

You must register online for the facility you wish to take the course.

Lifeguard Training Interested in a great summer job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate.

Developmental Swim Team This program is an introduction to competitive swimming.

He will demonstrate both conventional uses of the pencils as well as some unorthodox methods that he has developed to create effective illusions. This course introduces the importance of keeping and designing a sketchbook.

Examine the possibilities of planning for future larger works. The sketch book is an invaluable aid and tool for artists. The student will create and design their sketchbook to suit their personal objectives.

Supply lists are available online at www. ocaatlanta.com, or in the office. A $10 materials fee is included in the class fee for studio supplies provided by the Center. Open Studio is not included with class enrollment but is available for an additional fee of $40 for the session.

Monotype - The One of a Kind Print Kathy Garrou Wed. 6:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. 9/12–11/13 Fee: $205

Paint and Draw on plexiglass plates and transfer the image to paper using the etching press. Additive and subtractive inking using brushes and brayers will be explored as well as the use of multiple printing plates. Combine these techniques with printing hand drawn and photocopied images onto fine art papers.

Photographic images can also be printed using this form of printmaking.

Open Studio Printmaking 9/8–11/15 Fee: $160 Open studio is for previous Chastain Arts Center students who will work independently. Registration must be approved by the printmaking instructor. Students may work when space is available and no class is meeting. Open Studio ends 30 minutes prior to Center’s closing.

Pottery

Students may select from either wheel or handbuilding classes for all skill levels.

Chastain offers the following firing options: high fire in a gas fired reduction kiln, Cone 6 and low fire oxidation, raku and experimental techniques such as Saggar and Salt firing.

Please note: All pottery and hand building students: • Pottery students will be issued one bag of clay the first day of class. If clay is not claimed during the current semester, it cannot be claimed during a later semester.

• Students are responsible for purchasing tools for ceramics.

• Only clay purchased through the center and glazes provided by the center will be fired.

• A $15 materials fee is included in

the class fee for consumable supplies provided by the center.

Handbuilding/Figurative Sculpture Michael Klapthor Wed. 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. 9/10-11/12 Fee: $255 This class focuses on figurative sculptures, including human, animal, and imaginary.

Learn how to bring dynamic poses and subtle details into figurative works to tell a story. While all individual styles will be encouraged, students will be instructed on how to give elements of realism to their work using elements of posture and anatomy.

Everything Resin Rochelle Nation Fri. 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

10/3-10/31 Fee: $100 (5 weeks) Learn everything you ever wanted to know about working with resin. Students will learn how to incorporate it into their jewelry designs. Learn how to fill hollow bezel forms, add embellishments to resin and how to cast objects by building a silicone mold. Kit fee $50.

Beginning/Intermediate Jewelry & Metalsmithing Alan Bremer Tue.10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

9/11-11/13 Fee: $240 Explore fabrication tools and techniques while making your own jewelry. Continuing students will work on projects with instructor supervision. Tools are available in the studio but we encourage students to acquire their own basic tool kits. Come to class with drawing notebook and mechanical pencil. Silver is available for purchase from the instructor. A materials fee of approximately $10 will be collected at the first class.

Glass Working for Jewelry Louella Simpson Tue. 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

9/9-11/14 Fee: $180 (9 weeks) Learn how to cut, melt, and mold glass into one of a kind jewelry and ornaments.

Students will learn glass techniques including copper wrapping, fusing, soldering as well as construction, design, and more. No experience is necessary.

A $15 supply fee will be collected at the first class for glass, copper tape, and tools.

Discovering Jewelry and Metals Debra Lynn Gold Wed. 6:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. 9/10-11/12 Fee: $180 No class 9/24 (9 weeks) This is a “no fear” class for first time students who have always wanted to demystify the materials and methods of making metal jewelry. No experience is necessary. We will learn forging, fabrication, soldering, piercing, inlay, roll printing, polishing, and more. Debra brings over 40 years of teaching experience to this course. This class will explore various intermediate to advanced metals techniques. Students will work on their own projects as we refine the chosen area of study. Bring a lunch and get a lot of work done. Framemaking

Every home needs frames. Save a small fortune and learn a new skill in a framemaking class. A $10 materials fee is included in the class fee for studio supplies provided by the Center. Open studio is not included with class enrollment, but is available for an additional fee of $40 for the session.

This class starts with you and whatever you want to frame. Whatever it is, we can frame it. How to design, what and where to get supplies, frame construction, matting, shadow boxes, museum framing and more will be our topics. Redecorate. Have some fun. Save some money.

Open Studio Framemaking 9/8-11/15 Fee: $160 Students may work when space is available and no class is meeting. This applies to previous Chastain framemaking students who will work independently. Students must have instructor approval to register.
