my Buckhead
I’m just not sure where the time goes but it’s flying by. I joined the Atlanta Best Media team a little over 2 years ago and it’s been a whirlwind ever since. The team here has been busy producing eight of Atlanta’s top lifestyle magazines, which include our flagships, My Home Improvement (formerly Atlanta Home Improvement) and Best Self Atlanta. We also have six hyperlocal publications underneath our ever-growing umbrella—My Vinings/Smyrna, My Alpharetta, My East Cobb, My Intown, My Sandy Springs, and My Buckhead. Each My Neighborhood magazine is community driven and area-specific. You will find key advice provided by home service pros regarding everything from lighting and roofing to flooring and foundation repair (p. 22). You will also find our three-month calendar of events filled with fun happenings for you and your family to enjoy.

Why is my sink taking so long to empty?

A slow draining sink could be the result of a blockage or larger problem, such as a full septic tank. A licensed plumber can easily clear the line and provide you with a cleaning enzyme to help keep things clear. —Assured Comfort Heating, Air, Plumbing AssuredComfort.com

Make the most of a smaller backyard with tips from Gibbs Landscape Company. Voted by readers as My Home Improvement’s 2018 Best Landscape Maintenance Company, you’ll want to take notes. • Divide up the area. Separated spaces make each spot feel like a destination. • Create levels. Assorted plant containers and hardscaping elements at different heights draw the eye upward to give the illusion of a bigger space. • Find a focal point. Bring attention to a fountain or a fire pit, not the size of the yard. 4055 Atlanta Rd. SE. GibbsLandscape.com

Doug Barron
Executive Director • Educator • Family Man
By Victoria Trutie
Losing his mother-in-law, Wendy, to ovarian cancer changed Smyrna resident Doug Barron’s life. Following her death in 2007, Doug began volunteering for the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance. Today, he is the nonprofit’s executive director and works to spread awareness about the deadly disease, which the American Cancer Society estimates 22,240 people were diagnosed with and 14,070 people died as a result of in 2018.
Q
What does your role entail?
The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is an educational nonprofit that informs people about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer and that’s pretty much my job in a nutshell. We reach 2.5 million people a year through a variety of unique education awareness programs, including seminars and health fairs. We want women to understand the symptoms. A lot of times, they get overlooked and pushed off by doctors. If I knew then what I know now, my mother-in-law would still be alive and that is my biggest motivator.
Q
What are some of the nonprofit’s highlights?
Another popular initiative is our Bags of Hope program. Duffel bags with items like a hat and journal are given to women who have recently been diagnosed and are going through chemotherapy.
Q
What are some of your favorite places to frequent in Smyrna?
I love going to Atkins Park Tavern (the Park Burger is my go-to). My wife, Heidi, and I also go to Wade’s Fine Eatery and Good Time Emporium on Concord Road. They have such a diverse menu and unique spins on classic items. Smyrna is a great place to live. It has everything you need but still has a hometown feel to it. GaOvarianCancer.org

This tie-in was great for us since we are also a women’s empowerment organization.

Susan Harlan

Susan Harlan grew up in a hardware store. The tools and trappings of home fix-it projects are at the heart of her business at Vickery Hardware in Smyrna. “I grew up in this store,” she says. “Do-it-yourself projects are kind of in my DNA.” She fondly recalls roaming the aisles of the store after school and during the summer when she was a kid. “There was one gentleman who would give me a quarter every time he came in,” she recalls. “Back then, a quarter would buy five Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. As soon as he left, I’d run to the drugstore next door and buy some.” Vickery Hardware has been in her family for more than four decades, weathering good and bad economic times over the years. Susan says she’s grateful for her affiliation with the Ace Hardware dealer cooperative, where hardware vendors band together to buy merchandise at wholesale prices affordable enough to compete with the likes of The Home Depot and Lowe’s.
—SUSAN HARLAN
When asked what tool she couldn’t do without, she doesn’t hesitate to recommend a cordless power drill. “So many times, I see that ladies are intimidated by a power drill, but once you get one, it’s life changing,” she chuckles. Susan’s husband passed away in 2003 and she’s been on her own ever since. Recently, though, she joined the online dating site eHarmony and met her fiancé, Mike Mosley. “I’d been alone for a long time and decided to give it a try!”
MARCH – MAY 2019
The hardware store has been given a face-lift recently, but Susan says she’s worked hard to keep the store’s vintage feel. “We have tools from a bygone era hanging on display in the aisles,” she says. “People clean out their garages and bring me really old tools they find. I hang them up and they say they’re glad because they can come visit them whenever they want. They can’t bear to part with them.” You can find Susan every Tuesday night playing trivia at The Corner Taqueria. She’s a huge Atlanta Braves baseball fan, too, occasionally giving away tickets to a lucky customer who isn’t afraid to come in and purchase a cordless drill. VickeryHardware.net

Craig Michael Logan, M.D. RADIOLOGIST • HUMANITARIAN • BOURBON CONNOISSEUR By Victoria Trutie
Dr. Craig Logan, 47, demonstrates his altruistic nature and persistence both in his personal life and his profession. As the Chief of Radiology for The Southeast Permanente Medical Group of Kaiser Permanente, he exemplifies how one can achieve professional success while still finding time to help others, evident by his participation in various organizations.
Q
To date, what is the best thing you’ve learned about yourself?
Perseverance pays off. I’m the first person in my family to finish college. During my medical training, I worked up to 120 hours a week. After 13 years of work in my specialty, I’m now leading a major department for the medical services giant, Kaiser Permanente. Lifelong personal growth holds the key to unlocking your potential. Take every opportunity to learn.
Q
I have packaged medical supplies for MedShare with my Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. brothers for eight years. We have assisted in packing tens of thousands of pounds of surplus medical equipment destined for multiple underdeveloped countries. And I am currently the My Brother’s Keeper chairman for the Eta Lambda chapter of my fraternity, which means I am responsible for facilitating home visitations, car rides, and grocery shopping excursions to support our senior citizens. I communicate with other members, give advice on medical issues, and ensure that they are getting the help they need.
Q
What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work?
My life experiences taught me compassion for others. We moved a lot while I was growing up. I went to three different elementary schools, three junior high schools and three high schools, each in different parts of the state of California. I learned how valuable kindness is to someone who feels lost and alone.
Q
Where are some of your favorite places to go in Vinings/Smyrna?
Cielo Blue Mexican Grill & Cantina is an excellent restaurant in Smyrna. They have courteous staff, tasty food and prompt service. My favorite place for breakfast is First Watch. They only use seasonal produce from local growers so their food is always fresh. Thinking about it makes me hungry. The speakeasy inside Muss & Turner’s is a nice, dimly lit and romantic spot to have a drink after work. They have a huge selection of spirits, with many Southern bourbons like Bulleit. TSPMG.com

FOUNDATION REPAIR
Q
What are the primary causes of foundation issues?
A
Soil. In Georgia, we live on expansive red clay, which is highly susceptible to climate and temperature changes. When it rains heavily, that soil will expand and wash out. When we experience periods of drought, the soil will dry out and crumble. Whether caused by wash Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk out or dry out, that soil will weaken and can serve as a catalyst for multiple forms of foundation issues, including foundation settlement and foundation wall damage.

LANDSCAPE
Q
How do I keep my landscape looking lively in the wintertime?
A
Yards can often look tired in the winter. Instead of waiting till March or April to add mulch spread, make sure to mulch right after all the leaves have dropped in January. This, along with the addition of colorful glazed pots and winter flowering plants like the American holly, can help make your landscape look a lot more fresh Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson and alive.

Q
What problems can uneven concrete cause?
A
Years in Business: 19 Associations: NARI, BBB A+ Rated, Atlanta
Make sure your home stays cozy by having your roof inspected every two years. A reputable company should clean gutters and valleys of debris, check boots over protruding pipes and chimneys for cracks, and ensure your attic has an appropriate amount of insulation. To prevent ice damage, we generally recommend that you Chad Cruce have a professional increase ventilation, add insulation, seal air leaks, and remove overhanging tree limbs.

Aside from the eyesore that uneven concrete creates, the best reason to repair is to keep people safe. Uneven concrete can be a liability causing trips and falls. Plus, in certain areas, uneven concrete can lead to water drainage issues and cause costly structural damage.

Q
How do I spot a water leak before it becomes a big problem?
A
On your water bill, look for high usage, which can indicate a leak. Search your basement or crawl space for possible leaks as well. Our best advice? Have a licensed plumber perform a whole-home plumbing inspection annually. He or she will ensure your entire system is in good shape and spot Jerry Hall potential leaks you are unaware of, such as slow-running toilets or waterline leaks underground.

WATER PROOFING
Q
Why is it important to waterproof my basement for the winter?
A
Homeowners should know that winter is the best time of year to waterproof their basement because here in Georgia the spring rains start in February. By being proactive and not reactive, you will be handling your foundation issue before the spring rains occur saving you the hassle of having to deal with Derek Ritchie your basement flooding and water damage to your personal property. Q
How can I use flooring products to decorate my walls?
A
People often look for things that will catch the eye, with either texture or variation. Adding flooring to a wall space is great for highlighting a fireplace or breakfast nook. While you can use just about any flooring as wall décor, they make laminate and luxury vinyl lines for wall applications. These thinner, less heavy-duty versions of high-traffic Elisabeth Stubbs flooring are typically cheaper and easier to install vertically.

Q
What benefits can an insulated garage door provide? Can I insulate my existing door?
A
Aside from the benefit of moderating the temperature in surrounding rooms, (especially above the garage), insulation also quiets the operation sound of the door and increases durability. If you have a noninsulated steel door, there are insulation panels you can install but most models come with insulation John Nale in them. It’s usually a better investment to purchase a door with insulation than to go back and add it.

Q
How do I properly maintain my outdoor lighting?
A
Since outdoor systems are exposed to the elements 365 days a year, we recommend annual maintenance at the very least. This process often includes pruning away foliage, cleaning the lenses, repositioning the lights if they have been knocked out of alignment, replacing timer batteries, and reburying any exposed wire from water erosion. Q A
What’s wrong with vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows are made of plastic material and do not withstand changes in temperature as well as fiberglass windows. Integrity windows from Marvin Windows and Doors are comprised of Ultrex® pultruded fiberglass, which outperforms vinyl and vinyl/wood composites in virtually every measurable category. Plus, the production of vinyl windows requires more energy and Peter Morrison resource consumption than the production of Ultrex®.
