WINTER 2019
FOUNDER Sherri Adair
Dear Vinings/Smyrna Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!” Well, hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been playing on basketball teams ever since my days with coach Hamilton, and he was right! What you put into your body definitely shows on and off the court. Whether practicing my jump shot for hours or hitting the weight room, coach Hamilton always pushed me to be my best.

This sought-after mountain community is a haven for active re for outdoorsmen, art lovers, and humanitarians. By Nicole Letts
A convenient 90 miles from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport lies the quaint mountain community of Blue Ridge. This area is often referred to as the gateway to Georgia’s infamous Appalachian foothills, one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges. Tourists are drawn here to take in fall foliage, try fly-fishing, visit local shops and restaurants, and immerse themselves in the mountain arts and culture scene.
Returning visitors often find themselves dreaming of a home in the area. After all, few places offer as quick of a getaway from Atlanta’s hustle while providing serene surroundings and exciting opportunities as Blue Ridge does. Old Toccoa Farm, the only golf course in Fannin County and the only golf and river community in North Georgia, is quintessential mountain living. The community offers designs that include charming cabins and cottages waiting to be filled with guests and memories, while also being perfectly sized for maturing residents.
16 016-019_ PROFILES_0919-MYVS.indd 16
There are 388 lots planned with approximately 100 properties sold thus far. A significant number of new custom homes are currently under construction, and over 16 new custom homes are in the design review stage with construction slated throughout the fall and winter of 2019 into the spring of 2020. Future development includes a Golf Shop & Bar/ Grill, a River Pavilion with fire pits, bocce courts, hammock lounge, bar area, and small outfitter shop; wellness facilities; swim and tennis facilities, and this fall, an expansion of the walking trail from 1.5 miles to over 3.5 miles. The property itself is perhaps the largest draw of the community. Its 18-hole semiprivate golf course was designed by Bunker Hill Golf,

Old Toccoa Farm residents will delight in the community’s secure and central location. It’s the only community north of Jasper that offers a 24-hour, man-operated gatehouse with community security, and is just 5 miles from Downtown Blue Ridge. “When you’re 5 miles from town, 5 miles from the lake, 5 miles from the hospital, 5 miles from grocery, and the fly-fishing and the river is right on property, you’re in a pretty good location. And that’s what real estate’s about. Location, location, location,” says Peter Knutzen, a managing partner with Old Toccoa Farm.

coa Farm In addition to golf, trout fishing along the banks of the Toccoa River and Lake Blue Ridge is ranked the best in the state. In fact, Fannin County is the trout capital of Georgia. On-property fishing perks include access to 4,360 feet of Toccoa River tailwater, offering ample riffles, deep pools, and a more than 100-foot-wide river.

For those looking to become a part of the local community, the volunteer options are robust and rewarding. In fact, the developer of Old Toccoa Farm, many of its employees, and members are intimately involved with local charities including Habitat for Humanity; The Open Arms Home for Children, a safe foster home for abused and neglected young girls ages 10-18; Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc., a veteran-focused organization providing therapy through fly-fishing and fly tying; and Project Chimps, a 236-acre sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains that provides care to former research chimpanzees. With spectacular sporting opportunities, a bustling Downtown, and a giving community, Old Toccoa Farm is the mountain retreat you’re looking for. oldtoccoafarm.com, 596 Curtis Switch Rd., Mineral Bluff, Georgia, 706-946-4663. Robert Harrison H I ST ORY B UF F • HOST • ARTIS T By Alex McCray
Much like the Old Smyrna Firehouse building he calls home, there is more than meets the eye with Robert Harrison. Aspects of this construction company owner’s personality begin to unfold upon arrival to his house. Outside sits two metal sculptures with pyrotechnic features (a fascination of Robert’s) and a 1947 Ford fire truck formerly owned by the city of Smyrna. And although you won’t hear sirens, every now and again, you might catch Robert on the road behind the wheel of the rusty red ride. What began as the search for a new house, turned into one of Robert’s most gratifying restoration projects. “There wasn’t a lot here to start with,” he says of the historic building. Yet, he had a vision for the kind of space he wanted to create—one that was loft-like, welcoming, and original.

AS AN ARTIST HIMSELF, HELPING UP-AND-COMING ARTISTS SHOWCASE THEIR WORK IS SOMETHING THE SMYRNA
RESIDENT IS PASSIONATE ABOUT.
Venture to the second floor and you’ll be at the top of the fire pole and surrounded by family photos. Figure out the secret bookcase door (built by Robert), and you’ll wind up in a soundproof music room he created for jamming with friends. In the early 2000s, Robert toured the East Coast and Southeast with his rock band, Big Jack Pneumatic. Today, he isn’t the one performing in shows. He’s just hosting them. One of Robert’s main goals for his firehouse home was to create a community gathering space. The Old Smyrna Firehouse has played host to supper clubs, flamenco nights, concerts, and art shows by the Indie Arts Alliance, of which Robert is a co-founder. As an artist himself, helping up-and-coming artists showcase their work is something the Smyrna resident is passionate about. And when he’s not tinkering with new pyrotechnic creations or working on transforming his backyard (he plans to be on the Keep Smyrna Beautiful Garden Tour in the next few years), you’ll find him at Porch Light Latin Kitchen or relaxing with his four-legged companion, Dio. oldsmyrnafirehouse.com

Throughout the renovation in 2015, Robert put (and continues to do so to this day) his personal touch on nearly every aspect of the roughly 4,000-square-foot space. “If it’s a store-bought thing, I know someone else is going to have it and that drives me crazy,” he admits. Hence, the whimsical pieces for the stove vent and hood that are welded together and fire extinguisher lights (see right) above the kitchen island are just a few of the home’s details Robert created himself. Some items were even made in his welding studio on the lower level of the house.

eing a coach is a rare opportunity to get to know athletes at their best and their worst, and to be their support system through their sweetest victories and hardest trials. Although they know that not everyone on their team will go on to break records or play professionally, coaches believe that dedicated participation in sports leads to
a more well-rounded lifestyle and a strong sense of personal confidence.
Michelle Lanier Campbell High School Girls Head Track and Field Coach Michelle Lanier never intended to become a coach. “I’m a teacher by trade so when I saw my sons’ track team struggling, I offered to help.” Twenty-three years later, Lanier, who went to college on a basketball scholarship, has found her passion in helping teens use track as a doorway to a college education. “It’s a way to go to school without incurring tons of debt,” Lanier says. “It’s also about deciding who you want to be and how you want to represent yourself as a young woman.” Lanier enjoys watching her girls become more confident. “Sometimes they don’t believe

Eric Homansky Physical Education Teacher at Teasley Elementary School, Owner of Way2Play Sports Eric Homansky is in his 20th year of teaching and has always been driven by a strong work ethic and the desire to be a role model for his kids. He believes that physical education class is the best place in the whole school. “Once
students see that I care about them, that’s when they get into the class. They’ll try
new things that they might not be 100% confident [that they can accomplish] because they know even if they don’t succeed, I’m still going to help them and no one is going to laugh at them. It’s like being a parent. You’re teaching behavior.” That parent-like mentality is also what led him to start Way2Play Sports, an all-encompassing after-school and school break sports program in 2015. “I felt there was a need for a program that focused on the whole child in a safe and nurturing environment,” he says.

Growing up surrounded by basketball players, Katie Johnson desired to play a sport no one else in her family played. In high school, Johnson fell in love with volleyball. Fast forward to becoming a head coach, she has taken the varsity volleyball team at The Lovett School to the state semifinals for the past three years. “I spend a lot of time with these players,” she says. “They use my office as their breathing ground. When they need a break or are having a bad day, you can find them in my office.
Between texts, practice, and advising, I spend up to 50 hours with them each week,”Johnson says. Adding, “When I first started at Lovett, one player asked me about my

expectations. After our talk, she took it to heart and became one of the best leaders that I’ve worked with. She led by example—working to be first in every sprint and competing to earn a starting role.” And now, Johnson says, “Even though she has graduated, she still comes and works with me in the off-season and we visit when she comes to town on college breaks.”

When she joined a crew team her freshman year of high school, it was the first time Kaufman truly felt she belonged somewhere. Q
What are the best options for letting in plenty of light but still maintaining privacy?
A
We have a large variety of window treatments that maximize light while minimizing visibility from the outdoors into your home. Our plantation shutters are a popular choice because you can easily tilt the louvers to certain angles Andrea and Sean Zare allowing light to stream through. We can also add a center divider that allows you to close the bottom portion of the shutters for privacy and keep the top portion open for light.

What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is Michael Cangemi not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.

What are the best flooring options for kids and pets?
Flooring types that are durable and stain resistant like laminates and luxury vinyl are quite popular because they are easy to take care of. Tile is very practical but Atlanta homeowners generally gravitate toward the warm feeling of a faux wood that has the appearance of wood. If you want real wood choose a floor with a lot of character so you don’t have to stress Elisabeth Stubbs when life happens and you get inevitable dings and scratches.

People are adding more and more edible areas to their landscape, investing in blueberry bushes and kitchen gardens where they can grow things like lettuce, parsley, and kale. We are also seeing a lot of people incorporating tomatoes, cucumbers, ornamental peppers and more into their perennial gardens Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson so they can enjoy the harvest and the visual appeal. Have a smaller space? Consider starting a potted herb garden with rosemary and parsley on your back porch or patio.

Q
What are the different ways I can control my lighting system?
A
Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. If Lindsey Rodericks you want to control your landscape lights along with other exterior or interior lights from the same control point, we recommend hard-wired technology such as UPB.

Q
How do I know my windows need to be replaced?
A
There are several signs to look for when trying to determine if replacing your windows (and doors) should be the next project on your home improvement list. Some of these telltale signs include difficult operation, drafty windows (aka loss of energy efficiency), condensation between the glass panes, and water stains, chipping or deterioration on or around the window. Peter Morrison Even if you don’t notice all of these signs, replacement can still be a great choice if your home needs a makeover or you want to reduce your energy bill.

A water leak in your basement can easily lead to mold growth, which can cause health problems. The water can also deteriorate the wood by dryrotting the framing, which also attracts termites to the softer wood. The dry rot can lead to shifting of the frame resulting in door Derek Ritchie functionality problems and cracking of walls. The moment you suspect a leak, call a professional basement, crawl space and encapsulation company to get ahead of these problems.

Many Programmable Thermostats can be set to turn off when no one is home or to adjust the temperature to use less energy when residents are away. A Wi-Fi thermostat can also be adjusted from a distance when schedules change. Installing sophisticated high-tech thermostats like Lennox i-comfort S30 can automatically change over switches between heating and cooling depending on indoor temperatures. The smart away mode on the Bill Mashraky Lennox i-comfort S30 works with devices such as Amazon Alexa.
