From the Editor
Another reason why I just can’t get enough of the holidays is because there are tons of family-friendly activities to attend. First on my list is the Alpharetta Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 2 (p. 16). Taking photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus is going to be a highlight (selfies, anyone?!). And there’s nothing better than seeing the tree twinkle while savoring a roasted marshmallow or two. It’s going to be spectacular! Since giving back is a big part of the season, join me and the editorial team in sponsoring a family in need for Christmas. Thanks to North Fulton Community Charities (p. 30), being of service to others is just one donation away. With so many things to do, places to go, and people to know, our community is chock-full of amazing human beings doing outstanding things not just during the holiday season but throughout the year. If you know someone who is making a difference or you want to fill me in on upcoming neighborhood happenings, email: editor@atlantabestmedia.com or reach out on our @MyAlpharetta Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.

It’s that time of the year when I get giddy. The holiday season is upon us and I’m in the mood for food. I love gathering around the table with family and friends on Thanksgiving to share the one thing that I’m most thankful for. Dessert, duh! And for those who’ve spent this tryptophan-filled day with me, they know that I’m always forever grateful to the folks who bring the pies. So if you’re anything like me, you might want to put in your order now for the Cranberry Apple Crumble confection at Southern Baked Pie Company (p. 15). This melt-inyour-mouth treat, which is perfect for sharing, is sure to satiate your sweet tooth in more ways than one.

Q: Where should lights go on a Christmas tree? A: “Lights should be wrapped around the trunk and strung along the branches. Begin stringing them at the base of the tree and work your way up in and out. Having the lights plugged in helps you spot any missing lights or gaps you might have,” says Kristen Yonson, co-founder of interior design site, SwatchPop.com.

ANDERSON CENTER FOR HAIR & AESTHETICS By Amy Meadows
O
n Thursday, Oct. 5, the Anderson Center for Hair & Aesthetics literally rolled out the red carpet to herald the grand opening of its new flagship office in Avalon, Alpharetta’s bustling mixed-used development. The celebration was two years in the making, with Ken Anderson, M.D., and his staff working tirelessly to bring their vision for the state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot facility to fruition. And for the team, it was almost hard to believe that the moment had arrived.

That kind of revolutionary service is at the heart of the practice’s new location. The spacious office has two distinct sides: one dedicated to providing outstanding hair restoration services and the other devoted to offering an array of aesthetic treatments. Each side has its own exclusively designed waiting area with elegant décor, as well as well-appointed treatment rooms and private entrances for the ultimate level of confidentiality. The surgical area is particularly sophisticated, complete with an array of advanced equipment. What’s more, the center is partnering

“We have our office in Sandy Springs, but I have always wanted to bring something more to the people of North Georgia,” says Anderson, who originally opened his boutique practice in 2011 after spending years specializing in hair restoration surgery. In 2013, he became the only hair restoration surgeon in Georgia to be contracted to use the ARTAS Robot-Assisted FUE System, which allows him to transplant hair without any linear or noticeable scarring and provide a shorter recovery period for patients. And today, he not only remains the only surgeon who uses the ARTAS device, but his cutting-edge office in Avalon is now home to the state’s second robot.

In the center of the office, the two sides of the practice share a large conference room, which will serve as the hub for the American Academy of Hair Restoration Surgery, founded by Anderson, who has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 2017. Currently in the curriculum development stage in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology, the academy will give Anderson the opportunity to share his extensive knowledge with other physicians who want to become experts in hair restoration surgery. He will do that through a combination of in-office, executive-level immersion classes and at-home online modules. “I have learned so much over the last 15 years, and I want to be able to impart that knowledge to other physicians for the benefit of patients everywhere,” Anderson says. “Anyone can buy a hair restoration machine and use it, but a machine is not the specialty. Hair loss is like dental decay—it’s progressive in nature. You have to look at it in terms of lifelong management. And we want to teach physicians about the clinical decisionmaking processes that go into that management.”
[
THIS ENTIRE FACILITY IS THE MEDICAL SPA REIMAGINED. WE OFFER THE
LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN A SETTING OF
UNPARALLELED LUXURY.
[
In the end, every decision Anderson and his team made regarding the new office in Avalon revolved around the patient experience. Each service offered is designed to provide men and women with a new level of self-assurance and overall total wellness. And when it comes to hair restoration specifically, the Anderson Center for Hair & Aesthetics will continue to be a trailblazer in the industry, welcoming patients from around the world. “There has never been a better time to have hair loss,” Anderson concludes. “The technology is here, and we want everyone to know that this is the home of robotic hair transplant surgery. I have never seen happier patients, and it’s very special to be able to help them reclaim their confidence.” 2710 Old Milton Pkwy., Ste. 150, 404-256-4247 AndersonAesthetics.com

The Best in Hair Restoration Technology Anderson Center for Hair & Aesthetics offers several revolutionary hair restoration services performed by a staff of highly trained experts.
1
ARTAS Robot-Assisted Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Method: This noninvasive method involves removing hairs from the back of the head and placing them into sites on top of the head. Anderson uses the ARTAS device to remove the hairs one follicle at a time; he then personally implants the harvested hair.
2
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): This nonsurgical treatment option focuses on the stabilization of hair loss. Anderson offers patients the Capillus272TM Laser Cap, which is convenient and covers the entire scalp at once. When used, the therapy can increase cell metabolism, halt the progression of hair loss and more.
3
Stem-Cell Therapy: Anderson will soon begin offering stem-cell therapy for the treatment of hair loss. Another nonsurgical option, this therapy delves into the molecular realm and can help stimulate hair growth. The center is currently in the research phase.

with PrimeHealthMD on the aesthetics side to offer medical weight loss and hormone replacement therapy. “This entire facility is the medical spa reimagined,” Anderson observes. “We offer the latest technology in a setting of unparalleled luxury.”

The Wills Park Equestrian Center does much more for the city of Alpharetta than just offer a venue for horse shows.

THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE PARK ON WEEKENDS. IT’S SUCH A FAMILY-ORIENTED
PLACE.
Cheryl’s production company, aptly named Cheryl & Co. Horse Shows, Inc., produces horse shows all over the country and brings a show to Wills Park six times a year. In addition, she also manages two other shows there. “This work is so gratifying. I’ve seen hundreds of kids compete here and gain confidence, then some of them even go on to win national championships.” And she explains that children who face physical or emotional challenges can benefit as well. “If you put a child on top of a 1,600-pound animal, they’re going to gain focus.” “It’s important to me to give back to Alpharetta,” she says. Each year, she donates the proceeds from at least three of her local horse shows to Alpharetta causes, like HomeStretch, which helps financially stressed families get back on their feet. “This Wills Park facility means a lot to me. It’s so quaint and cozy. Everyone feels comfortable here—that’s what Alpharetta is all about.” Facebook.com/ShowWithTheCo and WillsPark.com my

Cheryl Sims should know—she’s been involved with the park since 1993 when her daughter started showing horses there. And in 2002, Cheryl produced a horse show at Wills Park to raise money for Milton High School’s band, where her kids went to school. “There’s always something going on at the park on weekends. It’s such a family-oriented place. The horse shows attract all sorts of onlookers; people hang out after a walk on the trails or they bring the family with a picnic to watch and get a chance to see horses up close,” she explains. “This is such a unique situation,” she elaborates. “I don’t know of many other cities that have a horse park so close to the urban area. People come from all over the country to compete here—that fills Alpharetta hotels and restaurants. Visitors tell me all the time that they love coming to shows here because it’s so close to everything they want to do on vacation. Hotels and fabulous restaurants are only minutes away!” She says she sends visitors to Avalon for shopping and Black Walnut Café or Lin’s Chinese Cuisine for a meal. “In the mornings, we send them to Da Vinci’s Donuts and recommend they take everyone to Topgolf!”

Kevin Carbone WA R R I O R • T H E M A K E R • D O G D A D
By Annie Paschal
When Kevin Carbone was just 5 years old, he spent time building a lemonade stand with his dad, Jerry, in their Alpharetta home’s backyard. It was then that Kevin developed a passion for building things from scratch. Little did he know, this ground training would prepare him to create an obstacle years later for NBC’s reality television show, “American Ninja Warrior.”
[
[
BECOME THE STRONGEST ATHLETE I CAN, I’M HOPING TO
In its sixth season, the contestants faced a number of physical obstacles that tested strength and endurance. Participants must make their way through the course without falling into a pool of water underneath. If you get wet, you’re out. As a first-year competitor (aka The Maker), Kevin played an especially interesting role in this year’s competition. He created an obstacle known as The Wing Nut (see Kevin and his creation on page 13 of the fall 2017 edition of My Alpharetta). He is the first athlete in the show’s history to compete on an obstacle he personally designed. He got the idea for The Wing Nut while working on an “American Ninja Warrior”-style obstacle course he built by hand in his family’s backyard. He credits his father for the innovative names of his designs. “He’s really creative so whenever I think of an idea, in 10 seconds, he has a name for it. He’s my creative partner. I’ll hire him for free,” Kevin laughs. After making it through three tough rounds, the Jumping Spider got the best of him. He slipped up on the notoriously difficult section, which consists of two parallel walls with just enough space for the competitor to straddle, requiring total body strength and precision. But after a year of training, the setback has pushed him to train even harder. “I’m hoping to become the strongest athlete I can, take in all the knowledge, and train as hard as I can to win the show,” he says. And with a $500,000 prize within reach, should he win, Kevin plans to use the money to build ninja warrior-type gyms countrywide and foster the next generation of ninja athletes. When he isn’t training or building inventive obstacles, he’s hanging with his dog Roxy, a lab mix, at Newtown Dream Dog Park. His family also loves to dine at Village Tavern. “They have some of the best steaks,” he says. Another new favorite is Avalon, which he says is great for shopping, eating, or just hanging out with friends.
