FOUNDER Sherri Adair
During this time of the year, I’m usually running around town like a chicken with its head cut off. From the start of holiday soirees and Christmas shopping to jet-setting and making very good use of my Global Entry card, it’s hard not to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle of the season. But this year will be different. I made a personal commitment to being more mindful about penciling in self-care. So I took the brand-new 50-minute Recovery Class at Exhale inside Loews Atlanta Hotel (p. 11). The sesh helped me stretch out every part of my body. All I needed to do was show up—everything else (think foam roller, mat, and belt) was provided!

Mimmo Alboumeh TACO ADDICT • RESTAURATEUR • HUMANITARIAN By Alex McCray and Stacy Moser
Just like the sumptuous tacos he serves, the ancestry of chef Mimmo Alboumeh traces a route from Lebanon, Spain, Italy and Mexico. It’s said that the concept of most tacos first originated in Mexico with food brought by Lebanese immigrants, later influenced by spicy Spanish flavors. A self-proclaimed taco addict, chef Mimmo draws on his heritage to create the Mexican cuisine of his popular Red Pepper Taqueria restaurants, including the brand’s 3,600-square-foot Briarcliff Road locale.
Q
How does your heritage influence your views on diversity? What steps have you taken to make inclusion a priority at Red Pepper Taqueria locations?
Mimmo Alboumeh: As a Lebanese American, I know how it feels to be prejudged. First and foremost, I want my work family to be good, hardworking people who take pride in what they do. I like to give other immigrants the opportunities past employers gave to me, so you will see a very diverse staff at Red Pepper. I feel the same way when it comes to our diverse clientele. Everyone is welcome.
Q
What has been the key to your success as an entrepreneur?
Q
Can you give us the scoop on Red Pepper Taqueria’s exciting new menu items?
MA: We added a prime beef burger named after Buck Lanford of FOX 5 Atlanta, a spicy beef menudo soup, chicken wings, a twist on a fried chicken sandwich, a hibiscus margarita called Espolón Rosa, and new tequilas. We want to always keep the menu fun, seasonal, and full of spice.
Q
You often host charitable events at your restaurants. What new philanthropic initiatives are you focused on?
UP MENUDO SO SPICY BEEF
MA: We are blessed. So, if I see someone in need, I will respond. My team and I are actively involved with the community and have donated time, resources and funds to many local nonprofits. All of the charities we support are special, but my heart is softest for children. Most recently we’ve supported Sporty Girls, Inc. [dedicated to encouraging minority girls to participate in athletics]; Reese’s MaGIC Fund [committed to pediatric cancer research and to prevent and cure germ cell tumors]; Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. [a volunteer group with a commitment to women’s health and Jewish values]; and more.
Q
When you’re off the clock, where do you like to go in Intown?
MA: I like to dine at locally owned restaurants, especially Kevin Rathbun’s [KROG BAR, KR SteakBar]. I also like to stroll Whole Foods and Your DeKalb Farmers Market to check out new, fresh ingredients to whip up something at home. eatredpepper.com/decatur

Judith Winfrey ORGANIC FARMER • PEACHDISH PRESIDENT • ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATE By Stacy Moser
Judith Winfrey, part organic gardener, part driven, passionate corporate leader, is the woman behind the success of PeachDish, the popular Atlanta-based meal-kit company delivering the bounty of Georgia farmers to home cooks nationwide. The company’s concept is simple—kits contain recipes inspired by seasonally available ingredients and are shipped in recyclable packages, each containing individual portions of the recipe’s ingredients. Ironically, Judith came to the food world late in the game, changing careers in her early 30s, segueing from graphic design to full-time server at a friend’s pub in Decatur. Judith laughs as she explains why she hesitated to choose culinary arts as her career. “Like lots of kids who grow up with parents in the food industry, my mom and dad told me not to even think about it as a career path. My mom oversaw hospitality at the governor’s mansion and my grandfather was a farmer, so I learned about food and farming from family.” The server gig didn’t just provide Judith with a steady income and a budding interest in the food industry, it also introduced her to her would-be husband, Joe Reynolds. “I met this cute server, a guy who was really into farming,” she says. “He stole my heart. We married and then started an organic farm, Love Is Love at Gaia Gardens, in 2007.”
WORKING WITH PERISHABLE FOOD IS HARD, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO SHIP IT ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
18 016-019_1219_MyIT_PROFILES.indd 18
Then Judith met Hadi Irvani, founder of PeachDish. “He knew I had an extensive background in food and agriculture. Working with perishable food is hard, especially when you’re trying to ship it across the country,” Judith explains. She took over as PeachDish’s president in 2014. Judith admits that one of her favorite kit recipes was contributed by Zeb Stevenson (executive chef of Redbird, which opened in September at Westside Provisions District). “It’s a quick, fresh take on chicken and dumplings, and I love it.” She says that she’s not much of a shopper, but she’s definitely a fan of the Freedom Farmers Market at The Carter Center and Sevananda Natural Foods Market. “There are so many wonderful places to eat in Atlanta, places that support local farms and have good food values. Lazy Betty is a current favorite.” peachdish.com

Jacqueline Boatwright-Daus ADVOCATE • DEVOTED MOTHER • WRITER By Katherine Sauceda and Alex McCray
Before Jacqueline Boatwright-Daus became a proponent for child care reform in Georgia, parents could unknowingly entrust a day care center without liability insurance with the safekeeping of their children. In 2001, it was this misfortune that led to Jacqueline’s son, Anthony DeJuan, nearly drowning at his day care and as a result, being placed on life support at just 14 months old. The negligence, which ultimately claimed the life of her son (known as “Juan”) after 11 years on life support, spurred this Intown resident to strive for legislative change. Through this journey, Jacqueline has found her voice as an advocate and even uncovered an opportunity to become an entrepreneur as she cared for Juan while he was alive.
Q
How have you used your son’s story to spark change?
Jacqueline Boatwright-Daus: To me, child care is not simply taking care of someone’s kids. When an accident happens, it is like a bomb. It drops in one place, but it will spread and hurt other people. That inspired me to get Juan’s law [Senate Bill 24] passed in Georgia in 2004, which means all day care centers are now required to have a sign that notifies parents that it is not insured. Parents must also sign an affidavit saying they are aware of it.
Q
What inspired you to start Juanderful Products?
JBD: I took care of my son while he was on life support with the help of nurses for 11 years. In 2008, I started developing a hair serum with natural oils that wouldn’t irritate his skin. We noticed his hair was growing quickly because of the product, and the next thing I knew, the nurses wanted some. They told others and it grew from there. Now, we have over 80 hair and skin care products for children, women, and men.
Q
When you’re not working, what are your favorite Intown spots to visit?
JBD: I am a realtor, event planner, and writer of books and plays. I’m currently hoping to tour my play, “No Shells,” which is a dramatic comedy, in the spring of 2020. I also manage my husband, Kevin’s, medical practice. However, we have traditions. Every Saturday, we eat breakfast at Oak Grove Market and on date nights, the go-to places are Parker’s on Ponce or Taqueria El Vecino. juanderfulproducts.com

Q
There is a strange odor in my basement and I think it might be mold. What immediate steps need to be taken to control the issue?
A
Don’t panic. Musty odors don’t always mean mold! However, basements tend to stay cooler, which causes the humidity level of the area to be higher than normal. In combination with basements having little to no air circulation, this can lead to musty odors and eventual Derek Ritchie mold growth. In most circumstances, a properly sized dehumidification unit that will clean, dry and circulate the air will eliminate the problem.

Q
I have young children and two dogs. What is the best type of flooring for my kitchen?
A
We recommend laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP)/ luxury vinyl tile (LVT). Both products are very durable, stain resistant and water resistant. Laminate and LVP offer the look of wood. Elisabeth Stubbs LVT mimics tile without the coldness, hardness, and grout.

Q
What are common indicators that it’s time for new masonite particle or wooden siding?
A
The most common indicators that it is time to replace your siding is swelling of your masonite particle siding (a mixture of wood fibers and other materials) and wet or dry rot on wooden Charlie Dallavalle siding. This is caused by excessive humid conditions or exposure to liquids.

Q
If my gutters are not free of debris, can my home be damaged?
A
Improperly channeled roof water that stems from clogged gutters (primarily leaves, pine needles, debris) is actually the leading cause of foundation and Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk waterproofing issues in homes. If not addressed, these issues can worsen over time, resulting in far more serious and expensive repairs.

Q
What are three tips for window replacement shopping?
A
First, if you’re looking for fine craftsmanship and quality windows, the lowest quote is not necessarily the best option. So do not choose a contractor based on price alone. Second, communication is important. You know you have hired a good contractor when they Peter Morrison are responsive, listen to your questions and explain the process clearly. Finally, consider scaling back on a project to stay within your budget—but never compromise! Poor quality vinyl windows will cost you more over time because they may need to be replaced in 10 years or less.

Q
What is the difference between torsion and extension springs? Which one is better?
A
Extension springs are mounted on each side of a door, stretch out when the door is closed, and work independently of one another. Torsion springs are mounted on a shaft above the door and lift the door with a smoother motion than the extension springs, making a torsion spring system the better system. Also, torsion John Nale springs have an average lifespan of 15,000 to 20,000 lifts opposed to the 5,000 to 10,000 lifts of extension springs.

What are three things I can do to keep my driveway looking new through each season?
A
Though ice on the surface of your driveway can be dangerous, do not use salt. This causes spalling, where the surface crumbles. Instead, use more effective chemical ice melt like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Another way to maintain the look Michael Cangemi of your driveway is to pressure wash it. Last but not least, be sure to caulk cracks and joints to prevent water erosion.

Q
What type of heating system should I get and why?
A
We recommend variable speed furnaces with variable speed compressors. A variable speed heating system controls airflow to provide better temperature and humidity control, and air distribution. Compared to a conventional single-speed furnace, a variable speed furnace uses about two-thirds less electricity. Furnaces with variable speed fans work well with other energy-efficient Bill Mashraky upgrades such as zoned heating controls and smart thermostats.
