JUNE 2016
Dear Alpharetta friends, Alpharetta is one of my favorite Atlanta neighborhoods. My sisters live there, so I have spent quite a lot of time in Alpharetta, where our families often share time together. Wills Park and Avalon are great spots to gather and favorite eateries include Milton’s and Ray’s at Killer Creek.

LEGS done...
”
My legs looked so much older than they actually were. They were heavy,
swollen, and I had unsightly spider and varicose veins. After getting my legs done, I was shocked to not be exhausted after a 12-hour shift! My clients ask me if my legs hurt from always standing and I say, “yes they did, but they don’t now, and VeinInnovations is why!” My legs feel energized, healthy, and I have more endurance at work, but also while doing the things I love, like hiking, spinning and mountain biking.

Q
If I list my house for sale this fall, should I avoid using holiday decorations? A: Of course you can decorate! Just keep your decorations simple, tasteful and not overly distracting. Be sure to have professional photos taken first without any seasonal or holiday decor.
The Alpharetta Natural Resource Commission (NRC) offers free garden classes aimed at protecting Alpharetta’s environment and natural resources. Register for their fall classes to learn about the best time to plant fall bulbs (Oct. 26), growing fruit in Georgia (Nov. 9) and how to photograph plants and wildlife (Nov. 12). 2 South Main St. Alpharetta.GA.US/NRC
Looking for holiday decor or gifts? The Porch on South Main is your Alpharetta destination for unique home furnishings and accessories. You can find antiques or contemporary items to fit any decor combo. If you need extra help, their in-home design consultants are available to assist. 531 South Main St. ThePorchOnSouthMain.com
Alpharetta interior designer Allison Havill Todd transformed this home’s living room into a serene space by adding neutrals in the furniture, satin textures in the decorative pillows and a taste of the exotic with the tribal coffee table. 6495 Shiloh Rd. #210. AHTInteriors.com
Prepare Your Garden for Winter: Remove debris from diseased plants and place fresh mulch. You can improve soil by adding compost to the base of plants. Add daffodil bulbs around the garden (they repel deer, rabbits and rodents). Mark the area with golf tees to identify where they are and avoid digging and damaging the bulbs. —Sandy Shepard, Master Gardener, Alpharetta Garden Club

ark Toro spent 27 years in Atlanta’s surburbs, living the quintessential suburban life, with two kids, a dog and a lot of time spent in the car commuting. Six years ago, he and his wife moved to Midtown and now
live in a high rise with everything they could want or need either within walking distance or easily accessible via Uber or MARTA. “It is, without question, one of the more exciting experiences of our lives,” he says. “The energy is palpable, and every time we step outside, we see something different.”

FALL 2016
“There is nothing like it in the Southeast,” Toro notes of the development, which was designed with such experiential mixed-use properties like San Jose’s Santana Row and Los Angeles’ The Grove in mind. “We sought to touch people and create a feeling for guests, like they’re on vacation or in a really special setting. It was about creating heart share—not market share.”

Toro, who also is responsible for the revitalization of Atlantic Station and the acquisition of Colony Square, among other projects, has known for years that Alpharetta would be the ideal setting for a development like Avalon. In the early 1990s, he served as vice president of development at Cousins/New Market Development Company and helmed the development of Alpharetta’s

That vibrant, walkable, live/work/play lifestyle is what Toro, who founded the Atlanta office of North American Properties in 1996, wanted to bring to the northern suburbs of metro Atlanta—and, more specifically, Alpharetta. He accomplished that goal with the October 2014 opening of Avalon, the 86-acre development located off of Old Milton Parkway that has become one of the area’s most visited destinations. Comprised of high-end retail, outstanding dining, a movie theater, green space, single-family homes, apartments and office spaces, the award-winning Avalon is essentially an urban-inspired city within a suburb—a concept referred to as an “urban burb.”

Mark’s Top 3 R&R Spots in Alpharetta
Having spent so much time in Alpharetta over the years, Mark Toro shares his list of downtime go-tos. Here are his favorites:
Top left: Avalon’s annual “Noon to Night” fall fashion show raises money for local charity Bert’s Big Adventure (BBA) and features BBA’s Kids walking the runway. Top right: Every month, Avalon activates Palmer Plaza with a free live comedy show from The Punchline. Bottom: Soon after North American Properties acquired Colony Square, the team installed eight-foot-tall “Midtown” letters at the corner of Peachtree St. and 15th St.
Development on the site of Avalon actually began a decade ago, but that project stalled. Toro and his team acquired the development in June 2011 and set out to build their vision. Seeing it come to fruition has been incredibly rewarding for Toro, who is a proponent of reurbanization. “We studied the best in class of mixedused communities across the nation and improved on them,” he says. “Now Avalon is a model for my peers in the industry. We see developers coming to Avalon to study it. It has joined that short list of premier mixed-used communities.”
Phase two of Avalon’s development will double its size in 2017 now that it’s managed by Hines, and the expansion will be key to Alpharetta’s continued growth—particularly if transit options can catch up with the community’s needs. And Toro has been there every step of the way, touting the benefits of the “urban burb.” Of course, people already seem to know. “We’ve had seven marriage proposals at Avalon,” he says. “Imagine one of the most important moments of anyone’s life—and seven grooms decided to propose there. We’ve given guests something that they can’t get anywhere else.”

The Big Creek Greenway is one of Toro’s favorite spots. He was so impressed with its plan back in the early 1990s that his company provided one of the first donations of right-of-way for the project. BigCreekGreenway.com

Wills Park, which features walking trails, ball fields, a swimming complex, an equestrian arena, a dog park and much more, is considered by Toro to be a truly world-class recreational facility. WillsPark.com

Mansell Crossing and several surrounding properties. “There is such a strong demographic, as well as exceptional growth and a daytime population,” he observes. “It was evident that there was a need for that community that wasn’t being met. The next generation of Americans wants energy, diversity of experience and mobility. They don’t want to spend the rest of their lives in the car. They’re seeking a different experience.”

Paul Castell KITCHEN DESIGNER • VINTNER • DOG LOVER By Carrie Whitney
Paul Castell has recently opened Dove Studio, a kitchen and bath design business and showroom in Alpharetta in April of this year. In addition to offering kitchen-design services, the studio features a full custom line of cabinets. Paul says he and his staff at Dove Studio strive to create living spaces where they explore and (literally and figuratively) build on his clients’ individual tastes.
Q
What made you decide to open Dove Studio in the Alpharetta area?
Locating right in the center of the Georgia 400 growth corridor was a major factor. The value of owner-occupied homes is crucial to our business. Our clients live in older homes where home prices range from modest to millions. Alpharetta offers something for everyone—it was a natural fit for my business.
Q
What is the most gratifying aspect of designing a kitchen or bathroom?
It’s definitely when we improve our clients’ lives in their homes. Designing a functional, yet beautiful, kitchen is essentially creating functional art. When a past client comes back and purchases more home-living products from us and bring in their friends is especially enjoyable.
Q
You have a private winery, Castell Vineyards and Winery. Other than enjoying your own vintages, where do you like to buy and drink wine in Alpharetta?
wine in Alpharetta is Vino 100, where there is a good selection and helpful personnel. For me, after-hour wine drop-ins include Cru, South Main Kitchen and Secreto Kitchen & Bar.
Q
In addition to designing kitchens, running a vineyard and sipping wine, how do you spend leisure time?
I love Alpharetta’s accessibility to everything, whether I’m running errands, grabbing some food, shopping or jumping on 400 to go boating on Lake Lanier. I like taking a bike ride along the Big Creek Greenway, and my two Affenpinschers love Big Creek too. The Food Truck Alley and Hop Alley Brew Pub (especially the dog-friendly deck) are fun stops for lunch or after a long day, and my favorite meal stop is Foundations. It’s “Fun Central” for me!

Grace & Julie Gordy D Y N A M I C D U O • FA S H I O N I S TA S • E N T R E P R E N E U R S By Amy Meadows
Mother and daughter Julie and Grace Gordy had almost given up. The Sandy Springs residents were seeking a space for Honey & Hazel Boutique, the clothing and accessories shop they had dreamed of opening for years. But nothing felt right. So they moved their search farther north. And that’s when serendipity intervened. “My mom and dad were in Alpharetta, and they were driving by this shopping center,” Grace says of the spot located just off of North Point Parkway. “There were a few empty spaces, so they looked in the windows. When they saw this space, Mom knew instantly. It was just perfect.”

With a great location and a build out that includes exposed beams and rich textures, the former James Avery store proved to be an ideal home for their venture. In April 2014, they opened Honey & Hazel, which is named for Emily Hayes, Julie’s mother and Grace’s grandmother, who had hazel eyes and was known for calling everyone “honey.” And in only two years, the award-winning boutique has become a local mainstay. “The response from the community has been overwhelming,” Julie notes. It’s not surprising, as “the Gordy Girls” carry unique clothing and accessories that appeal to a range of age groups, from women in their 20s to those in their 60s and beyond. According to Grace, “We love for women of all ages to come in and feel like the clothes aren’t too young or too old. We want them to feel comfortable and leave feeling beautiful.” Julie adds, “It’s so motivating when you can help someone and they leave feeling excited.” They also leave feeling like family. Grace and Julie strive to know each customer personally, and that effort has brought in clientele from around Alpharetta and metro Atlanta, as well as other states (thanks to Instagram, Facebook and the ability to ship nationwide). And there’s nothing they enjoy more than bumping into a customer while out at locales like Avalon, the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater or downtown Alpharetta’s restaurants ... and seeing their merchandise in action. While it’s just the two of them right now, the Gordy Girls look forward to growing Honey & Hazel. But they will make sure never to get too big. “We want to keep those close-knit relationships with our customers, so we’ll always be a boutique,” Grace concludes. “We’re just very excited for what the future holds.”

What's New in Closet Design Even the smallest closets have the potential to showcase your personal design aesthetic. In fact, turning the closet into an extension of the bedroom or bathroom has become a popular trend. For 2016, you’ll see more closet design companies featuring specialty cabinet finishes, elegant hardware and furniture-type detailing. You’re gazing into this area a few times a day, so make it a place that inspires you to look—and feel—your best.
➏
➊
Hang a Chandelier…Enlighten a dark closet with pizzazz and add the designer touch of a special fixture overhead!
➋
Closet Jewelry…Forgo the ordinary knobs and pulls and bring in some "bling" for the hardware.
➌
Fine Finishes…When planning a closet redo, consider the décor of adjacent rooms and select wood finishes to blend in with the overall color scheme.
➍
Fashion Underfoot...Throw down an area rug for warmth and style. This makes the closet feel like part of a room.
➎
Assigned Seating…Place a stool, ottoman, bench or slipper chair in the closet so you'll have a spot to try on shoes.
➏
Display Your "Wears"…Give your best-loved pieces the VIP treatment by using a bookcase or custom shelving to keep them prominently in view.

Laura Ray, president of the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers, recommends assessing your personal style as you consider re-organizing or updating your closet. “Shop in
