From the Founder Celebrating the Amazing Buckhead Business Community! Last month, My Buckhead had the honor of co-hosting an event with Cambria Gallery at Buckhead. The intent was very simple: To shine a light on and bring together the businesses of our close-knit Buckhead community to share ideas, experiences, successes and support each other as we all move forward. The turnout was tremendous! We had over one hundred of our community’s best business owners join us for the celebration! My Buckhead magazine, along with Krys Alex Photography and The Green Room Agency, provided complimentary hair, makeup and photography for professional headshots for the business owners, while Cambria and CR Home provided drinks and light bites from The Iberian Pig. It was truly an amazing event filled with positivity and enthusiasm for our community. It was also evident that everyone there had missed getting together face-to-face over the last year, and we were reminded that in-person events are still the best way for businesses to connect with the community and each other. As the owner of a media company, connecting local businesses with each other and the community is what I love to do. I look forward to many more of these events in the coming months. Experts say NO. The question of whether the real estate market is a bubble ready to pop seems to be dominating a lot of conversations – and everyone has an opinion. Jorge Sicilia, Chief U.S. Economist at BBVA Research, says, “Conditions today are quite different than in the early 2000s, particularly in terms of credit availability. The current climb in house prices instead reflects strong demand amid tight supply helped along by record-low interest rates. Millennials need houses. Prices will keep rising for a while because inventory is so low.” Sicilia adds, “Underwriting standards are still strong, so there is little risk of a bubble developing.”

t’s certainly a story you’ve heard before — a would-be fourth-generation wants to be anything other than whatever the family business assumes. It was no different for
Josh Brooker. Homeschooled, he spent much of his teen years shadowing his electrician dad and, as one of seven children, he couldn’t wait to do his own thing. When the time came to choose that path, he aimed anywhere but there. I knew they aren’t all like that though, and I wanted to show that side of the industry to my community. While her friends partied it up post-grad, 23-year-old Katie Jones was preparing to become the owner of one of the most prestigious art galleries in the Southeast, Buckhead Art & Company. After interning there through college and staying close with then-owner Hutton Snellings, Katie took the plunge and wholeheartedly decided to fill Snellings’ shoes when she passed on the biz. Plenty of late nights, prayers and “oops” moments later, Katie is proudly blazing a trail featuring local artists and a new event space.
Q: What do you wish more people understood about art and art galleries in particular? Katie Jones: As an artist who’s taken on the business side of a gallery, it’s been very eye-opening. I think it’s important for artists to know that just because we don’t represent your work doesn’t mean we don’t support you. The art world is small and not the easiest. We all have to stick together and support one another. I also think there’s a common misconception about galleries and price points. We have a wide price range from paper pieces to collector’s pieces. Don’t judge the whole gallery from one price tag on the wall.
KJ: I find my inspiration from interior designers. From Melanie Turner to Wolf Design Group and Valerie Garrett Interiors. As far as a favorite place to paint, you can catch me late at night in the gallery or in my kitchen. I grew up always painting on the dining room table.
Q: What advice do you give to clients looking for that perfect art piece for their home? KJ: Buy art that you love and that’s meaningful to you, not just to fill the walls in your home.
Q: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned since taking over the gallery? KJ: I think it’s important to know your community. I can’t tell you how lucky I am to have had such supportive neighbors in the Buckhead Village District.

Chris D’Auria has been the owner of the well-known watering hole Johnny’s Hideaway since 2008, but his history with the bar goes back much further. Known for its good times, good tunes and stellar service, Chris sits down to share a few stories and talk about what keeps people coming back:
Q: How did you end up at Johnny’s? Chris D’Auria: My father was almost an original partner; he bought in back in ’81. In ’97, I was general manager of American Pie in Sandy Springs, when my father asked me to run things here. I told him, ‘I am not going to come run The Hideaway; I am happy where I am now.’ But blood is thicker than water, and it was a substantial raise from what I was making.
Q: What are some of the little-known facts about Johnny’s? CD: It was originally a big band club. The first 10 years it was open, no jeans were allowed on men, and a jacket was required. It was a grocery store before it was a club. One of my managers went into the ceiling once and found some old window signs that said ‘pork chops 19 cents.’
Q: What do you think has made Johnny’s such a long-lasting staple in Buckhead? CD: The music and the customer service. The music is the staple, obviously. We tweak the music very little … dance hits from the ’50s through the ’90s, some 2000s sprinkled in. We even have a Spotify playlist.

CD: Years ago, I was working the door when this guy walked in wearing nondescript clothes with a hat pulled down. We didn’t allow hats at the time, and I said, ‘Sir, you can’t wear your hat inside.’ And he looked up, and I said, ‘You can wear your hat in here, would you like a table, sir?’ On the way out, I asked, ‘Mr. Clooney, any chance I could get a picture and put it on the wall?’
Q: Outside of work, what do you like to do? Where do you go? CD: I’m pretty hands-on about work, but when I’m not here, I like to hit the gym or enjoy a nice cigar. Some of my favorite places to eat in Buckhead are Chops, Hal’s and La Grotta. johnnyshideaway.com

Some examples of contaminants include pollen, Bill Mashraky dust, fungal spores, emissions from vehicles on nearby roads or parking lots, and standing water promoting excess microbial growth. If contaminant sources are not controlled, indoor air quality problems can arise, even if the HVAC system is properly designed and well-maintained. A high-efficiency filter and ultraviolet (UV) light will improve indoor air quality.
