Myth #3: I should delay my routine medical care until this pandemic passes.
“Going viral” has taken on new meaning in the last several months. Not only are the news cycles fast enough to make your head spin, but our appetites for information have also perpetuated conflicting information surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Not intending to provide a comprehensive lesson about this health risk, here are some common myths that we should put to rest:
Myth #1: The virus does not affect healthy men (or at least not as severely). Although less likely to be severe, this virus can easily infect even healthy young men. Unfortunately, some of these lower risk men have died from COVID-19. Just as important, men with mild symptoms can infect their friends and loved ones who may be at higher risk for a poor outcome.
Myth #2: There is not much I can do to prevent the disease. As the months pass—and the economy declines—we are less likely to remain in a bubble. Each person must find their own way of balancing prevention and a return to normalcy. It’s all about reducing exposure. Even when social distancing is not possible, these tips can help reduce the risk of infection: •Create space between you and others, even if it’s less than the recommended six feet. Every bit helps. •Wash or sanitize your hands repeatedly throughout the day.
Medical offices and hospitals have become extremely safe environments when it comes to protecting patients and healthcare workers. Although grocery stores, restaurants, and other local businesses have taken many thoughtful precautions, healthcare facilities take it to the extreme when it comes to sanitation, screening, testing, isolation, and mask use. The risk of delaying the diagnosis and management of serious medical conditions is far greater than contracting COVID-19.
Myth #4: No one can see me smile behind my mask. Yes, it is still worth smiling. Not only will your mask move upwards, but your eyes and upper face will reveal the happy expression. Elizabeth Gill does it all. She is the owner of Express Employment Professionals, a
mother, grandmother and has a long history of community involvement, incuding serving as past president of both the Rotary Club of Buckhead and the Buckhead Business Association. Currently, she serves as Chair for the Rotary Club of Buckhead’s Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation Signature Project, which is very personal for her. In February of 2016, Elizabeth lost her eldest daughter, Rachel, when her condo building caught fire. While firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and were able to pull Rachel out, she died just 18 hours later at Grady Memorial Hospital. Even though Rachel did not survive, Elizabeth still felt compelled to give back to the firefighters who tried to save her. “I got to say goodbye because of them,” she says, “I felt like I owed them.” Through the Buckhead Rotary Club, she was connected with Shirley Anne Smith, the executive director of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation (AFRF), who offered to give a tour of the Buckhead fire stations.

Here we were, in the wealthiest zip codes in the city, and the furniture was being held together by tape,” she says.
Since her involvement with the project, Elizabeth has gotten to know the members of Station 21, the station that was first called to Rachel’s condo. “When I first met them no one person would take the credit for bringing her out,” she says. “[As] I got to know them better...they told me who was there, who brought her out, who took her to Grady and who fought the fire. That meant a lot to me, because I got to thank them personally.” As the Chair of the Fire Rescue Foundation Signature Project, Elizabeth speaks to various groups around the city about the conditions of the fire stations to get them to partner with AFRF to adopt a fire station and improve the living conditions for some of Atlanta’s bravest workers. atlfrf.org/adoptafirestation

City funding only covers a station’s bare basics, like electricity and water; firefighters have to pay all other expenses on their own. “When Greg Davis [the then Rotary Club president] and I left, we agreed this would be a great signature project.” The Rotary Club of Buckhead committed to donating a total of $75,000 over the course of three years to refurbish and update the five Buckhead stations. Their first check was presented in July of last year.

What is the best flooring for my kitchen and why?

There is no “one size fits all” answer. Many homes have wood floors that look great, but water concerns and durability can be problematic in a heavily used kitchen. Tile is very easy to keep clean and lasts forever, but may not be the best choice for someone who is on their feet a lot. The Buckhead Village District hosted the American Red Cross for their first ever blood drive. Over the course of two days they collected 60 units of blood, with 37 of those units coming from first-time donors. Blood supplies have been heavily impacted by coronavirus and the inability to host regular blood drives.
