Teachers can make a world of difference. For me, that was Dr. Gerald Grow. When I was in graduate school, he was my magazine journalism professor. After I graduated with my master’s, Dr. Grow arranged a meeting for me to meet with the executive editor of People magazine. That in-person get-together at our school’s job fair landed me an internship at People’s New York City headquarters followed by a full-time job offer less than three months later. One teacher believing in me played a major role in what I call a career of a lifetime! This is why I’m so thrilled that we’re back with our 2nd annual Top Teachers issue. Thanks to your nominations, teachers like Maria Kepler of St. Pius X Catholic High School are changing the classroom one student at a time. Turn to page 33 to read more about Ms. Kepler and others like her. In each issue, we include a three-month calendar. Turn to pages 22-23 for details on neighborhood events like Jeffrey Fashion Cares Atlanta and the 10th Annual Blue Ties Luncheon. Pull out your planner and pencil in a few of these must-attend happenings. Also inside, you will find our Fall/Winter Good-For-You Getaways guide (p. 37). Start planning now to take the family on a road trip to nearby hidden gems.

emodeling and renovation are pursuits of passion in Melissa Bean’s family. Her love of design and construction has such deep roots that she named her business 5th Generation Contracting, Inc., a nod to her family’s heritage in the industry. Melissa, the company’s owner and a licensed general contractor, talks about her family’s legacy. “My grandfather was my hero. As a kid, I spent a lot of time with him on construction sites. He inspired me. After college, I worked for two of Atlanta’s largest contracting companies. Then I struck out on my own almost two decades ago because I was tired of making commitments to my customers that went unfulfilled by my employers. Those companies focused on maximizing profits, not keeping promises. I knew I could do better.”

Melissa runs the business with her husband, Wayne. “He is our sales director and is an integral part of our company. I’m the luckiest woman in the world because I get to work with my family.” Her daughter, Laura Tenuto, is the company’s design manager and Laura’s husband, Brian, is its sales manager. Melissa and Wayne’s youngest son, Grant, is a superintendent, overseeing construction on job sites.

“There’s no miscommunication between the builder and architect, because we’re all on the same page, within one company,” Laura explains. “We won’t use inferior materials or take shortcuts on the quality. For instance, we actually go to the sawmill and handpick custom wood beams ourselves. We’re so particular about materials. In Buckhead, most houses are older, so we mill our own trim to match a home’s existing trim. We want every detail to be precise and perfect.” Melissa says that her firm’s projects in Buckhead are some of her favorites. “It’s because of the timeless architecture here,” she says. “Not only do we enjoy working with our clients in Buckhead, but we also enjoy being part of the community, like the work we did for Cathedral of Christ the King and The Westminster Schools. Our challenge and our passion is to make a renovation really capture the character of Buckhead’s finest homes and unique buildings.” 5thGenerationContracting.com, 1000 Johnson Ferry Rd., Ste. A Female Role Model in the Remodeling Industry
“I love construction, but in the early years, there were crews that didn’t want to work with a woman. I thought, ‘That’s OK. We want better men than that for ourselves and our clients.’ Sometimes men came to our office, passing right by me, looking for a man to talk to.” But Melissa says that now she considers her gender advantageous. “My clients know this is a woman-owned company— men here work for a female boss and, obviously, they are respectful to women.” “At the end of the day, if you’re good at what you do, it doesn’t matter if you’re female or male. I’m passionate, I listen carefully and I work hard—that’s the secret.”

design each project. We build it like it’s our own home,” she states emphatically. “It’s so important to me that we are known locally for providing top-quality service and construction. When we first meet with clients, whether it’s a commercial or residential remodel or new construction, we ask a ton of questions. We really get to know our clients because it is important to us to understand why they are remodeling/ building. Why isn’t their current home working for their family or lifestyle? By understanding on a deeper level what they are trying to solve, we can come up with solutions that often, they have never thought of before. We manage the project as if it was our own money, our own house, our own bank account.”

Mimmo Alboumeh TACO ADDICT • RESTAURATEUR • WORLD TRAVELER By Stacy Moser
Just like the sumptuous tacos he serves, the ancestry of chef Mimmo Alboumeh traces a route from Lebanon, Spain and Mexico. It’s said that the concept of tacos first originated in Mexico with food brought by Lebanese immigrants, later influenced by spicy Spanish flavors. A self-proclaimed taco addict, chef Mimmo draws on his Lebanese and Spanish heritage to create the Mexican cuisine of his popular Buckhead restaurant, Red Pepper Taqueria. “When I came to the U.S., I only knew Mediterranean cuisine,” the gregarious chef recalls. “But my family in Athens, Georgia, had Mexican restaurants, so I learned from them and developed my own style. I also travel to Mexico often and love the culture, cuisine, people—and, of course, the tequila!”

“I FELT BUCKHEAD NEEDED A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN COME IN A SUIT, FROM THE GYM, OR ON A DATE. IN HEELS OR FLIP-FLOPS—
[
“I make our seasoning out of 25 spices for the meats. And my favorite item on the menu is the Beef Barbacoa taco with smoked brisket, pickled onions and guajillo salsa. Our ingredients are local and organic. Not only does buying local support our community, it guarantees that everything is always fresh.” When asked why he picked Buckhead as a location for Red Pepper Taqueria, he explains, “I felt Buckhead needed a place where you can come in a suit, from the gym, or on a date. In heels or flip-flops—you’re welcome here. The energetic, fun vibe is welcoming. Dining at Red Pepper is an experience, not just a meal.” Most recently, chef Mimmo set his sights on Town Brookhaven, where he opened another Red Pepper Taqueria location in March with the same flavorful menu, a wide selection of tequilas, a 1,500-square-foot covered patio, flat-screen TVs and an area for live music. The chef uses his three restaurant locations (there’s also one in Decatur) to host charitable events, whether it’s for CURE Childhood Cancer, Second Helpings Atlanta, The Giving Kitchen, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival or the Frank Ski Kids Foundation. He takes his wife, Debbie, and three kids out to eat at Bistro Niko. “And I like to cruise Whole Foods Market and see the new fresh ingredients, take them home and whip something up!” he says. Kim Wilson
GARDENER • ENTREPRENEUR • MOM
By Jennifer Colosimo
Most people already know Kim Wilson because they’ve tasted her fresh grown tomatoes and famous fried okra. Others recognize her as the friendly face running Lucy’s Market where they go to stock their pantries for lunch, dinner and one-of-a-kind staples on a weekly basis. What you may not know is that her address in the Andrews Square Shopping Center wasn’t in her grand plan—in fact, she traded her corporate ladder for a vegetable stand on a pure leap of faith. “I was beginning to feel the urge to create something of my own,” says Wilson, who was contemplating going back to work after being at home with her kids. “The vegetable man on the corner had passed away and the idea to create a local market was born. I spent hours gardening, planting and enjoying being in a vegetable co-op with about 24 other women, so with a little encouragement, I made the leap.”
A FAST LOYAL FOLLOWING TOOK WILSON FROM THE GAS STATION TO HER CURRENT COUNTRY-COOL STOREFRONT, AND ALLOWED FOR AN EXPANDED MENU OF FOODS WITH A FOCUS ON LESS
PROCESSED INGREDIENTS.
And business boomed. A fast loyal following took Wilson from the gas station to her current country-cool storefront, and allowed for an expanded menu of foods with a focus on less processed ingredients, unique plant-based proteins, a variety of wines (think The Fableist chardonnay and Jason Palmer cabernet sauvignon), premium steaks and charcuterie options. “My customers have followed me from location to location,” Wilson says, admitting she is happiest helping those customers eat cleaner. She offers almond and pecan milks, raw foods, grain salads, vegan and gluten-free desserts, dairy-free yogurt and more. “I’ve reached the point in my life where I am able to travel. I love seeing new places and learning about new food trends, wine, and discovering one-of-a-kind products for Lucy’s Market.” But when she’s not jet-setting around the world, Wilson unwinds at Topgolf, works out at iTrain Atlanta, and indulges as often as she can at Antica Posta or Houston’s. Wilson got the locale for free, thanks to a family-owned gas station that opened up a spot for selling. And during the first couple of years, a support group of friends and family worked shifts while she ran errands, picked up her kids or got a haircut. A good friend made her “Lucy’s Market” sign, and with that, she was officially in business with a store named after her grandmother and daughter, both named Lucy.

Mark McCandless has been with The Galloway School for over three decades, teaching a wide range of science-related subjects. Colleagues describe him as a nature lover (who witnessed the inaugural Earth Day celebration) and he promotes the importance of environmental stewardship to his students. He describes his motivation to teach by using the words of Elliott Galloway, the school’s founder. “I want to help kids ‘find out who they are, so they can
Introducing students to the importance of cultural diversity takes precedence in Archie Deen’s Human Geography class. “The class emphasizes people—where they are, what they’re like, how they interact. It helps students understand the world we occupy and appreciate the circumstances affecting peoples and countries other than the United States,” he explains. “This generation of students has a keen sense of right and wrong, especially on issues of social justice. There’s a palpable sense that they want to be more engaged in intellectual life. I love to hear their perspectives, stories and experiences. My
challenge is making what I teach relevant to their lives so they can discover their place in a very complex world.”
“I have a world-view focus and a belief that speaking a second language opens doors and broadens your perspective.” She says her teaching style is “a bit ‘old school.’ Kids need structure and rigor to achieve at high levels. How Making Art Can Enhance your Well-Being
Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.
By: Teresa Woodruff, LPC, ATR-BC, CPCS 1. Our internal thoughts and feelings may be difficult to verbalize; art provides a tool for getting these outside of ourselves and releasing intense emotions. This feels cathartic and enhances emotional resiliency, making you more apt to handle whatever hardships life throws your way.

This improves problemsolving and flexible thinking in other areas of your life. 5. It makes you feel good. Making art activates the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine (which makes you feel good) and reduces cortisol levels (which is the stress hormone), thus reducing depression and improving your mood.

The kids are a joy. Negotiating teenage hormones is tricky, though. I’m constantly reminded of how hard it is to grow up and what courage they have to keep going. I worry about—and love the most—kids who struggle socially or who seem like they can’t help but get into trouble. In the long term, they’ve

Great Destinations in the Southeast to Rejuvenate, Relax and Have Fun! By Jennifer Colosimo
O
nce the temperatures dip, the allure of indoor fun intensifies, and a short drive from the city opens up countless opportunities to avoid cabin fever and keep the entire family loving life and each other while staying adequately entertained. Here’s your guide for where to go in the Southeast and what to do when you get there.
Start by checking off the state’s best museums with a stroll through the High Museum of Art, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, and Fernbank Museum of Natural History. You’ll also want to tour the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville or experience the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum in St. Marys. You often don’t have to go far to include these educational stops on your vacation itinerary.
Celebrate on the Lake Lake Lanier (and its surrounding towns) includes numerous family-friendly farms with pumpkins, hayrides and u-pick crops along with petting zoos and craft tables and plenty of rentable cabins to cozy up in during seasonal festivals. Plus, the entire family can enjoy holiday highlights during Magical Nights of Lights at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. Find a bevy of fall fun around Lake Allatoona, with costume contests, parades, avid bird watching and more surrounding its 12,000 acres of lake. Nearby Barnsley Resort provides a season full of fun such as signature holiday dining, lights and wreath-making workshops in December, as well as horseback riding through the changing leaves, toasting s’mores over an open fire, enjoying football, lawn games and craft brews in the outdoor Beer Garden or joining in on a Saturday Artisan’s Workshop, featuring a different local artisan every weekend.

In Georgia, the lake life doesn’t stop when the weather turns cooler. In fact, if you’ve got the right itinerary and a dose of holiday spirit, the entertainment actually ramps up.

In North Georgia, revel in picturesque fall-hued vistas, don coats and grab hot chocolate mugs when strolling through the holiday lights festival at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee or indulge in the holiday buffets and craft shows at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa.
Cooler on the Coast Just because the swimsuits are packed away doesn’t mean the beach is out. In fact, much of the drivable coastline for Georgians offers plenty of cool-weather calendar choices. Alabama’s beaches serve up small-town charm with ample entertainment. From Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to Perdido Key, soak up a vivid arts scene, maritime history, adventure parks and one of the most adorable zoos you’ll ever visit. End any day at the famous Flora-Bama Lounge
for cocktails and five stages of live music and fun. The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee Along Florida’s 30A, you’ll find some of the most soughtafter residences in spots like Destin and Sandestin, Panama City Beach and Grayton Beach, Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach, Seagrove and Seaside. Attend one of the food, wine or holiday festivals, or take advantage of an area where the golf season never really ends.
Often the holiday season inspires a sense of giving, and several resorts have answered the call for a growing voluntourism trend. Give Kids The World Village in Kissimmee, Fla. offers Disneyfaring families a way to give back during their trip, helping in a storybook resort created for sick children and their own families.
Escape to The Mountains Snow or shine, valleys and peaks, day hikes or the Appalachian Trail, the mountains provide bucket-list-worthy stops to schedule any vacation around.

Small-town vibes draw travelers to cities like Blairsville, Helen, and Hiawassee in Georgia, North Carolina’s Hayesville, Franklin and more. Off the hiking path, Asheville invites you to fill your itinerary with eclectic eats, brewery tours and the Biltmore Estate. Nearby, Chattanooga is a classic destination with stops like Lookout Mountain, Rock City and more. If do-it-yourself is the key to holiday happiness, start your Christmas tree trimming from scratch and visit Hunter’s Christmas Tree Farm in Milton or take a trip to North Carolina to cut down your own.
