When a Buckhead family of five decided to renovate their cramped kitchen, they knew they wanted to make the fireplace a focal point. To increase space for movement throughout the room, Matthew D. FOUNDATION REPAIR
Q
What are the primary causes of foundation issues?
A
Soil. In Georgia, we live on expansive red clay, which is highly susceptible to climate and temperature changes. When it rains heavily, that soil will expand and wash out. When we experience periods of drought, the soil will dry out and crumble. Whether caused by wash Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk out or dry out, that soil will weaken and can serve as a catalyst for multiple forms of foundation issues, including foundation settlement and foundation wall damage.

LANDSCAPE
Q
How do I keep my landscape looking lively in the wintertime?
A
Yards can often look tired in the winter. Instead of waiting till March or April to add mulch spread, make sure to mulch right after all the leaves have dropped in January. This, along with the addition of colorful glazed pots and winter flowering plants like the American holly, can help make your landscape look a lot more fresh Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson and alive.

CONCRETE
ROOFING
Q
What problems can uneven concrete cause?
A
Years in Business: 19 Associations: NARI, BBB A+ Rated, Atlanta
Make sure your home stays cozy by having your roof inspected every two years. A reputable company should clean gutters and valleys of debris, check boots over protruding pipes and chimneys for cracks, and ensure your attic has an appropriate amount of insulation. To prevent ice damage, we generally recommend that you Chad Cruce have a professional increase ventilation, add insulation, seal air leaks, and remove overhanging tree limbs.

Team Roofing and Construction, LLC
Aside from the eyesore that uneven concrete creates, the best reason to repair is to keep people safe. Uneven concrete can be a liability causing trips and falls. Plus, in certain areas, uneven concrete can lead to water drainage issues and cause costly structural damage.

Q
How do I spot a water leak before it becomes a big problem?
A
On your water bill, look for high usage, which can indicate a leak. Search your basement or crawl space for possible leaks as well. Our best advice? Have a licensed plumber perform a whole-home plumbing inspection annually. He or she will ensure your entire system is in good shape and spot Jerry Hall potential leaks you are unaware of, such as slow-running toilets or waterline leaks underground.

Q
Why is it important to waterproof my basement for the winter?
A
Homeowners should know that winter is the best time of year to waterproof their basement because here in Georgia the spring rains start in February. By being proactive and not reactive, you will be handling your foundation issue before the spring rains occur saving you the hassle of having to deal with Derek Ritchie your basement flooding and water damage to your personal property. People often look for things that will catch the eye, with either texture or variation. Adding flooring to a wall space is great for highlighting a fireplace or breakfast nook. While you can use just about any flooring as wall décor, they make laminate and luxury vinyl lines for wall applications. These thinner, less heavy-duty versions of high-traffic Elisabeth Stubbs flooring are typically cheaper and easier to install vertically.

Q
What benefits can an insulated garage door provide? Can I insulate my existing door?
A
Aside from the benefit of moderating the temperature in surrounding rooms, (especially above the garage), insulation also quiets the operation sound of the door and increases durability. If you have a noninsulated steel door, there are insulation panels you can install but most models come with insulation John Nale in them. It’s usually a better investment to purchase a door with insulation than to go back and add it.

Q
How do I properly maintain my outdoor lighting?
A
Since outdoor systems are exposed to the elements 365 days a year, we recommend annual maintenance at the very least. This process often includes pruning away foliage, cleaning the lenses, repositioning the lights if they have been knocked out of alignment, replacing timer batteries, and reburying any exposed wire from water erosion. WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Q A
What’s wrong with vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows are made of plastic material and do not withstand changes in temperature as well as fiberglass windows. Integrity windows from Marvin Windows and Doors are comprised of Ultrex® pultruded fiberglass, which outperforms vinyl and vinyl/wood composites in virtually every measurable category. Plus, the production of vinyl windows requires more energy and Peter Morrison resource consumption than the production of Ultrex®.

Q
How long should the average exterior paint job last?
A
At the minimum, a good exterior paint service should last for six to eight years. Many paint companies provide warranties on their products and services for at least this amount of time, if not more. To extend the life of your exterior paint, schedule Charlie Dallavalle regular cleaning and maintenance twice a year.

Q
What can I do to improve the efficiency of my heating and air-conditioning unit?
A
A great way to up the efficiency of your unit is to change your air filter regularly. If there are pets or smokers in the house you should change it monthly. Also, have your system properly maintained twice a year by an authorized factory representative. Finally, if your system is out of date consider replacing it with a new two-stage or variable speed system. Bill Mashraky and Mike Eberle

nyone can visit a chiropractor—a little tweak here and there, and patients are virtually pain free. That is, until the next time they need to come in for another little tweak. To combat this vicious cycle (read: inconvenient and expensive way to live), the doctors at Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ in Buckhead adopted a different approach. Their philosophy addresses the biomechanical needs of a patient, an almost holistic approach minimizing most noncontact injuries from ever happening. It’s also why they’ve teamed up with HiveFit, a pure and potent supplement line that gives men and women the nutrients they need to reach optimal health.
That means maximizing absorption of the appropriate nutrients, which among other benefits, reduces inflammation—the root of illness, fatigue, aches and pains, mood swings and more. “We can’t control all of the factors that impact our bodies: that is, environmental, traumatic or emotional,” says Philip Hatrak, chief operating officer of Synergy. “But getting a patient proper care will help maximize their body’s potential for healing.” Hiteshew was a patient of Synergy for about three years before Hatrak started picking his brain on HiveFit for his own personal goals. A company with 100-percent transparency, HiveFit offers clinical doses of pure supplements made with quality ingredients gathered from around the world—and unlike other I DON’T CARE HOW supplement companies, they list every single WELL ADJUSTED ingredient on the label. YOU ARE, YOU’RE By that time, Hiteshew NOT MAXIMIZING was a believer in Synergy’s YOUR POTENTIAL patient-centered, TO BE HEALTHY. —RAUL HITESHEW personable approach with

“We call it the ‘1+1=3 effect,’” says Raul Hiteshew, nutrition expert and the co-owner of HiveFit. “If you don’t have proper nutrition, I don’t care how well adjusted you are, you’re not maximizing your potential to be healthy. It works the other way around, as well. If you’re eating well, but have imbalances, you’re not at your best. But together, when you have the right nutrition and great biomechanics, you can operate at your optimal health level.”

knowledgeable, compassionate doctors who deliver on results. After just a few conversations, they realized if they teamed up, they could start to change the health game in Atlanta. “Our goal is to improve and optimize Atlanta’s health system with a holistic approach,” Hiteshew says. “We want the best for our city. This is our home, and we know we have the power to get people from A to B faster, and in a healthier way.” And it’s not just about Atlanta. Hiteshew is also changing the game for starving children through the HiveFit Foundation, a cause he started that provides specially engineered drinks to help recoup a child’s digestive system, better preparing it for the food donations OUR GOAL IS TO other companies deliver.
“ IMPROVE AND OPTIMIZE ATLANTA’S HEALTH SYSTEM WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH.”
Synergy’s Buckhead location adds to a trusted brand that’s —RAUL HITESHEW been around for more than 30 years in Atlanta. “Buckhead is a great place because the market is saturated with fitness studios on every corner and in close proximity to one another,” Hatrak says. It also answered the call from many patients who were commuting to their other office, outside the perimeter. Its custom approach offers patients a more efficient road to recovery through pain relief, prevention and maximizing performance. The doctors take time to discuss each patient’s goals and develop a personalized plan together. The endorsement of HiveFit offers a quicker road toward those intended results. Those results don’t mean a lifetime of adjustments and supplements—but when you combine them to reach your health goals, it sets the body up to do what it was meant to do—heal itself. Simply put … synergy. When Hiteshew and Hatrak aren’t seeing clients, you can find them grabbing a bite at True Food Kitchen. And for a workout outside of their own home gyms, they love going to The Forum Athletic Club. Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™, SynergySportsWellness.com, 3565 Piedmont Rd. A Vision for Vitality In the future, combining the benefits of Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ and HiveFit could also better equip high school athletes to take care of their bodies and be able to play at a professional level. As an investment in their bodies, it nurtures them for the future while life is wearing them out. “High school kids have so much potential, but they’re not getting anywhere near where they could, because they’re misaligned and not getting the appropriate supplements,” Hiteshew says. “If we can take care of them at the grassroots level, we can help them develop in a more healthy way and maximize their athletic potential,” adds Hatrak.

Christine Pullara T V H O S T • M O T H E R • AWA R D W I N N E R By India Powell and Victoria Trutie
Christine Pullara has been in front of a camera since she began modeling at 13. Thanks to years of life experience, her ability to help make the guests on her hit weekday talk show, “Atlanta & Company,” feel as comfortable onscreen as she does, is effortless. Christine’s bright smile and authenticity has translated into a successful career as an award-winning news anchor (including a Southeast Emmy award), show host, and producer with major networks and channels such as NBC and HGTV.
Q
Describe one of the most moving experiences you’ve had at work.
Q
How do you balance career and family?
Q
You’re in amazing shape! What’s your workout secret?
Q
How do you nurture your inner self and spirituality?
Q
Where are some of your favorite places to go in Buckhead?
I’ve had so many incredible experiences in 25 years but any time we’re profiling ways to help people who are sick, it always tugs at my heart and is especially impactful. I get to meet many children diagnosed with cancer. As a parent, it is just heartbreaking to think about watching your little ones suffer. If I can tell their story in a way that makes people want to help, then I feel like I’m doing my job!
It ain’t easy! I’m big into classes or a trainer. I’m not so disciplined on my own and I know that about myself. One of my favorite trainers is Lawton Hydrick at The Forum Athletic Club. He makes me use heavy weights [up to 70 pounds!] and do cardio spurts of mountain climbers, rowing, spinning and more.
I surround myself with people who make me a better person. I have amazing girlfriends who inspire and motivate me to live my best life but also accept my shortcomings. It’s so important to surround yourself with a circle of women you love, respect, and admire as you walk together in faith.
I love Le Bilboquet—especially their Cajun chicken dish. For Italian, Storico Fresco Alimentari e Ristorante makes me feel like I’m eating at Nana’s house! 11Alive.com/Atlanta-And-Company

Lyn Ross SKIN-CARE GURU • SPIRITUALIST • EDUCATOR By India Powell
As a teenager who struggled with severe acne, Lyn Ross prayed that the days of popping pimples would come to an end. Now, decades later, people look to her as a leader in the aesthetics and clinical skin-care industry. At 66, her deep-rooted devotion to helping others with their skin and body care needs has led to the creation of her own science-based line of products and the establishment of the College of Advanced Aesthetics.
Q
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment in the field of aesthetics?
Q
What makes Institut’ DERMed different and what new things are on the horizon there?
The Institut’ DERMed College of Advanced Aesthetics that I founded in 1994. Our intensive MediClinical Spa courses are highly coveted certifications that set the standard for licensed estheticians desiring to work with problem skin conditions. The course modules focus on ingredient knowledge and how they work at the cellular level for acne correction, antiaging, evening the skin tone, and comforting sensitive skin types.
As a licensed master esthetician who has worked one-on-one with clients in the treatment room since I was 24, I am able to teach other aestheticians how to tune into the skin’s psyche and know what treatments to perform for optimal results.
Q
What do you like to do for fun?
I love to travel! In October 2018, I spent two weeks in Tuscany. I then went to California to attend the Living a Life of Presence conference with Eckhart Tolle and others. I follow several spiritual gurus and am very drawn toward helping others connect with the spiritual part of their being.
Q
What charity do you and Insitut’ DERMed support?
Each February, I recruit 25 makeup artists to support teens going to prom. The professionals provide makeup that enhances the dresses given to the high schoolers through an event called Prom-A-Palooza created by Rachel Ewald and the Foster Care Support Foundation. It’s hard work but so rewarding when you see the transformations and how happy the girls look and feel for their big night.
Q
What are some of your favorite spots in Buckhead?
I love going to the Atlanta Fish Market but the Italian in me adores Antica Posta! I also love the movie theater at Phipps Plaza. It makes for an amazing movie-going experience. IDerMed.com
