With Thanksgiving around the corner, I have a lot to be grateful for. I’m so appreciative for our beautiful Buckhead community, the team here at Atlanta Best Media, my parents and sister, my friends at Mount Paran Church, and so much more. As you gear up for the season, be sure to count your blessings and do my Calendar of Events something to put a smile on someone else’s face.

FOUNDER Sherri Adair
During this time of the year, I’m usually running around town like a chicken with its head cut off. From the start of holiday soirees and Christmas shopping to jet-setting and making very good use of my Global Entry card, it’s hard not to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle of the season. But this year will be different. I made a personal commitment to being more mindful about penciling in self-care. So I took a 60-minute power yoga class at the new Bring It OM studio (p. 13). And although I couldn’t keep up with some of the real yogis in the room, I was thankful for the encouraging instructors and colleagues like Best Self Atlanta editor Alex McCray. We tag team a lot of our workouts and when I feel like I can’t go full throttle anymore, Alex says, “Hang in there, push past the pain, Laura J.!”

Full-Service Facial C
Ready for a change? Let Dr. Farzad R. Nahai of The Center for Plastic Surgery at you look and feel good. His experienced team offers unparalleled care to meet you By Nicole Letts
t The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C., the phrase “full service” isn’t just a buzzy slogan; it’s a reality. Founded in 2013, the practice is dedicated to meeting
their clients’ needs, no matter what their skin care situation or aesthetic desires. That means a lengthy list of procedures that includes everything from facelifts and breast augmentations to cancerous surgery repairs and other medical related surgeries.
Injectables, for example, are among the most common cosmetic enhancements. These include services like Botox® Cosmetic and facial fillers. While billboards or advertisements might allude to bargain prices or luxurious procedure environments, those perks will only get recipients so far. According to Dr. Nahai, the science in achieving desired results rests with the person behind the needle. “There is a lot of skill level involved with these procedures. We pride ourselves on the experience level of our injectors and our estheticians. Our most senior registered nurse injector, Mary Popp, has been in the business for over 20 years,” says Dr. Nahai. The same applies to laser treatments such as laser hair removal and aesthetics such as facials and peels. It’s the specialist that counts.
NOVEMBER 2019 – JANUARY 2020
That quality expertise is one of the reasons The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C., has a full-time physician’s assistant, Ann Patrick Meagher, who only focuses on plastic surgery. She assists Dr. Nahai in tending to patients. It’s a team effort backed with extraordinary skill.

Dr. Farzad R. Nahai helms The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C. He is an Atlanta native, The Westminster Schools and Emory University alumnus, a published author, and a father of two whose passion shines through his skilled hands. Dr. Nahai says it’s important for his patients to look and feel good but also be confident in their medical professionals. In fact, Dr. Nahai personally trained his staff and oversees all procedures no matter how simple or complex they might be.

Dr. Nahai insists their care standards and their facility standards are what separates The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C. from other practices. “We take care of a lot of skin cancer patients as well [including] putting them back together and keeping them whole,” says Dr. Nahai. He continues, “There are a lot of cosmetic procedures on the face and eyes that we can do in the office under local anesthesia obviating the need to go to the operating room and under general anesthesia.” The office also houses an on-site pathological laboratory resulting in quick result turnaround.

—DR. FARZAD R. NAHAI So what is an experience at The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C. like? “All patients undergo a thorough exam and explanation of the findings and a discussion of the features of their face [or body] that they want to address,” says Dr. Nahai. While wish lists might include a trip to The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C., especially during the holiday season, Dr. Nahai says to start by giving the gift of a consultation. “A consultation, visit with the esthetician, and products can be gifted, [however] we really prefer that patients seeking aesthetic enhancement seek consultation first before deciding on what interventions to do.” That ensures patients are good candidates for desired treatments and allows the patient and Dr. Nahai to establish an overall cosmetic plan. However, if you simply can’t wait to get started, and want to look your absolute best for impending holiday soirees, consider booking an appointment soon. “Filler results are immediate while neurotoxins like Botox take several days to take effect,” says Dr. Nahai. For best results, he recommends planning services at least a month in advance. Of course, there’s no time like the present to make an appointment, so you can feel good and look great. In between appointments, you can find Dr. Nahai at Buckhead Diner. And after work, you can find him at Bones having dinner with his family or riding his bike on the Northside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine. metroderm.org, The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C., 875 Johnson Ferry Rd. Debra Carlton, M.D. TRIATHLETE • ASSOCIATE MEDICAL DIRECTOR • GRANDMOTHER By Katherine Sauceda
Tending to her uncle’s horse, Flash, is one of Dr. Debra Carlton’s fondest memories. In 1963, when uncle Scott gave her a pamphlet filled with horse facts, she couldn’t put it down. It was at this point in her life that her heart was set on going to veterinary school. But her career plan changed at 16 when her favorite uncle Scott died suddenly from diabetes and high blood pressure. Wanting to help those dealing with health issues, Dr. Carlton graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences and went straight to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. For the past 29 years, the Buckhead resident has been working as an internal medicine physician, and most recently, associate medical director at The Southeast Permanente Medical Group of Kaiser Permanente. Among her other accolades, Dr. Carlton was Perfecting Peachtree Your Stride featured as the 2012 Over 40 & Fabulous! cover winner in Best Self Atlanta.

DC: In 2015, I was asked to participate in the 21-Day Plant Power Challenge [a Southeast Permanente Medical Group initiative for a plant-based diet] at work. Personally, I wasn’t interested in changing my eating habits. After learning how it can prevent and improve illnesses, I was convinced. I have now worked my way to being 95% plant-based along with my husband, William Craven. My cooking is not reliably delicious yet, but my Tuscan white bean pasta is getting there! DC: For many years, I was a sporadic exerciser until I found the Atlanta Tri Sisters, Inc. [a women’s triathlon team]. I am grateful for the encouraging atmosphere of this group, which was founded by Julie M. T. Walker. I am 66 years old and have completed around 10 triathlons since joining in 2014. This is something that I never imagined doing. Nelson Mandela said, ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’ That’s what being a part of this team means to me.
Q
When you’re not at work, what are your favorite places to hang out?
DC: Nothing beats Chastain Park. It’s a beautiful place to go for my 3-mile runs and I love taking my grandchildren there to play. My go-to restaurants are Bangkok Thyme and Basil’s Restaurant & Tapas Bar. healthy.kaiserpermanente.org, debra.carlton@kp.org

Nearly three decades into your career, what is something you hope to have accomplished?
Dr. Debra Carlton: My desire is for my patients to feel empowered about the changes they make in their lives and pass on the knowledge given to them to others. It’s like throwing a pebble into a pond and watching the ripples grow from the center.

Rebecca Walden BEAUTY BOOSTER • WIGSPERT • GIVE-BACK DEVOTEE By Katherine Sauceda
Today, Rebecca Walden is known as the “Wigspert of Atlanta” but it wasn’t always that way. She remembers being a nervous new wig consultant at Bernadette’s Salon & Wig Gallery in 2007. One of Walden’s first client experiences involved a frizzy synthetic wig that she confidently attempted to flat iron. “I ruined my client’s hair and my flat iron,” she chuckles. The Buckhead resident knew things could only go up from there. Shortly thereafter, the 2014 Best Self Atlanta Over 40 & Fabulous! Fab 5 winner dove into learning the ins and outs of wig customization. In 2015, she started Rebecca Walden Wig Studio and has been helping women with hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, trichotillomania or hormonal changes ever since.
Q
What moment led you to only servicing medical clientele?
Rebecca Walden: It was a conscious decision to not do wig styling for fashion. You can go anywhere to get a wig for, let’s say, Halloween. When a woman is diagnosed with a serious illness like cancer, her first thoughts are, ‘Am I going to lose my hair?’ Would you know where to go from there?
Q
How does it feel to be able to make women feel like themselves again?
RW: It’s empowering for me to be able to empower them. Most people might think that hair is no big deal, but to me, it is a body part. If I can get a woman to look at herself in the mirror and recognize herself and feel good, it makes me feel worthy. I feel like I am serving a purpose far greater than myself.
Q
It seems like giving back is in your blood. What other causes are important to you?
RW: I’m the vice president of the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition. I’ve modeled for Doggies on the Catwalk, and am involved with the Sub-Saharan Education Project.
Q
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do around Buckhead?
RW: This might sound lame, but I actually enjoy spending my nights at home. I love what people will never admit loving: reality television. I take a salt bath and watch whatever is recorded on my DVR. One of my favorite shows is “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” When I do go out, my go-to places to dine are Le Bilboquet, Davio’s® Northern Italian Steakhouse, and Yebo Beach Haus. rebeccawaldenwigstudio.com

CONCRETE
Q
How do I know when I can repair versus replace concrete?
A
Our objective is to provide a cost-effective, functional alternative to replacement. The sooner we are called in to address an issue, the better. A long-standing problem can in many cases still be fixed at an affordable price. However, the repair may be more visible. The only way to know for sure if repair is the Michael Cangemi right choice for you is to call us for a free estimate!

Q A
What is the best type of exterior paint?
High-build exterior latex paints are ideal for a high-quality, long-lasting look. Latex paint is often recommended because it won’t trap moisture and is able to expand and contract with siding. Plus, its vibrant color won’t fade even when cleaned often with soap and water. Charlie Dallavalle One of our favorite recommendations is SuperPaint® Exterior Acrylic Latex by Sherwin-Williams.

ROOFING
Q
How can I make sure my roof is ready for summer storms?
A
There are three important items to check off your list before hurricane season hits. First, make sure to have your roof inspected for any cracks or gaps. These small imperfections can easily spring a leak with heavy rain. Second, thoroughly clean your gutters and roof valleys. Gutters and valleys filled with debris will prevent Chad Cruce proper drainage. Lastly, anticipate any safety hazards by trimming back trees and other foliage.

WATERPROOFING
Q
What are some alternative locations that garage doors can be utilized in and around the home?
Years in Business: 84 Associations: GAHBA, IDA 404.872.3667 www.overheaddooratlanta.com
Water may be entering through the walls, by seeping up from the ground below, or from leaks in your plumbing. It could even be from any combination of the three. Water pooling against the foundation then seeping through the walls commonly causes leaks. This can be caused by negative grading around your home and misdirected downspouts. Even Derek Ritchie mulch piled too high, too close to the house can cause a problem. A waterproofing contractor can discern where your specific problem is coming from and provide the best solutions for you.

If you keep your HVAC unit’s fan set to “on" instead of “auto,” the fan will continuously run and pick up more dirt. Also, if you have multiple cats and dogs, excess animal hair and dander can easily clog your filter. Finally, the problem may be because you have an accumulation of dirt in your air ducts. Clean your air ducts and replace your filter regularly for the highest quality air—every 30 days Bill Mashraky for fiberglass filter, every 45-60 days for pleated and a monthly washing for electrostatic, and duct cleaning every 3-5 years.

Q
What are the warning signs that I need to service my water heater?
A
There are a few major indicators that there might be something wrong with your water heater. The first of these is that your pressure relief valve (the small gold tube attached to your water heater) is releasing water. Diminished hot water production can be another sign that you Jerry Hall might have a problem. Finally, any unusual sounds from your water heater should be investigated by a skilled professional.

Q A
Can carpet be hypoallergenic?
What are clad windows?
Yes! Carpet can actually act as a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen, and other particles. Studies have shown that people with asthma and allergy problems have seen their symptoms improve with carpet that is properly and regularly cleaned. One of the best new developments in hypoallergenic carpet is Mohawk Flooring’s Air.o™Unified Soft Elisabeth Stubbs Flooring. The soft fibers don’t absorb moisture, are easy to clean, and contain no volatile organic compounds.
Simply put, cladding is the protective exterior material on the frame and sash of a wood window, designed to improve a window’s longevity, durability, and performance. Unlike other brands, the cladding on Marvin® windows has an air gap between the cladding Peter Morrison and the wood, allowing water to evaporate, thus keeping the wood dry. When the cladding is directly against the wood, moisture is not allowed to evaporate, which leads to window rot. In addition, the extruded aluminum used in the cladding on Marvin® windows is thicker than other brands and significantly stronger.

FOUNDATION REPAIR
Q
How can I prevent future issues with my foundation?
A
Prevent future problems by keeping an eye on what your home is trying to tell you. Look for cracks along the outside or inside of your home’s foundation, as well as jammed doors and windows. Ensure that the soil your house is sitting Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk on does not expand or wash out.

Q A
Why should my landscaper be insured?
The liability on the homeowner is huge when it comes to worker compensation claims or otherwise. Generally speaking, landscaping projects often involve large trucks, machines, and sharp small equipment. These things can cause a great deal of damage to driveways and homes. If the landscape company isn’t properly insured, Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson the homeowner can be held liable for repairs or bodily harm. Many small landscape companies don’t have insurance but we make it a priority to offer you this protection.

Q
How do I ensure my outdoor lighting is safe (e.g., won't catch fire)?
A
Lighting your home without proper training can be very dangerous. Make sure to hire professionals that are licensed for low-voltage work. This licensing ensures they understand the proper electrical codes and materials required to install outdoor Lindsey Rodericks lighting.

What Women Can Do for Men’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD
It is well-established that women are more health-conscious than men. They tend to eat healthier, pamper their skin, floss their teeth daily, and go to the doctor regularly. Men, on the other hand, manage to put off these annual wellness visits. In fact, men are also more likely than women to make unhealthy choices such as smoking, excessive drinking, and aggressive driving. So how can women move the needle? I would imagine that most women turn the page when they see an article about men’s health. Whether it’s a husband, father, brother, or good friend, share these health tips with your loved ones. In fact, most of these articles also contain helpful advice for women. Of course, the best mentors teach by example. As already mentioned, this is where women have a head start. However, men can be oblivious to those cues. Nevertheless, it is much easier to make healthy decisions when the people around you make the same choices. Repeatedly making these favorable choices—particularly for shared activities—will heighten the awareness of healthy lifestyle decisions.
So here is your essential “can do” list for the men in your life:
Look for my article on “A Men’s Guide to a Healthy Winter” in the next issue.
• Stick to the calendar for those necessary doctor visits
Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with WellStar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years.
• Eat a healthy and balanced diet (in the right amounts) • Perform moderate exercise on a regular basis • Develop a good bedtime routine • Drive safely
We all want to please others, but sometimes men need to hear what’s best for them. Don’t be afraid to say that a second basket of tortilla chips is a bit much while waiting for that order of fajitas. Point out when they’re looking fatigued and suggest a little more exercise and sleep. Approaching these sensitive issues can be difficult, but not as difficult as losing that loved one.
• Don’t smoke • Wear sunscreen • Take out the trash (are you still reading?) Sometimes men need a kick in the pants. Women are the best coaches for a healthy lifestyle. That’s one reason you never hear that women need a kick in the skirt.
WellStar North Fulton Hospital offers the Know Your Heart Screening that can determine your risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to learn more or schedule an appointment.

Founded by Michele and Daniel Rickett, parents of Alethea Tinkle, owner of the Buckhead business Bella MedSpa, She Is Safe educates, rescues, and empowers survivors of human trafficking. The nonprofit partnered with Avalon (L TO R): DEBRA HULL, GILLIAN MARTO, MICHELE RICKETT to celebrate the International Day of the Girl. From Oct. 8-11, attendees of Avalon’s weekly Signature Event Series learned how to keep girls safe from trafficking, enjoyed a sip and stroll sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau benefiting She Is Safe, and took part in a butterfly release that symbolized setting girls free from modern-day slavery. sheissafe.org
