Help with math project? Check. Get the kids to rehearsal on time? Check. Review homework? Check. With school underway, there are basic tasks that need to be completed. And as the parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure that everything gets done. But sometimes, things fall through the cracks and you just can’t possibly do it all. That’s when standout teachers from our neighborhood schools like the five we’re featuring in this issue come into play. We asked and you answered. And thanks to your top teacher nominations, we can see why your children are succeeding in more ways than one. Read p. 26 to find out why fifth grade teachers like Christiane Wyckoff of Sope Creek Elementary School are changing the classroom one student at a time. I knew a couple of extraordinary educators myself. My high school yearbook adviser, Ms. McQuade, not only helped me perfect the art of writing captions but she also spent quality time getting to know me as well. And when I was working on my master’s degree, Dean Hawkins believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself.

By India Powell Not many wildly successful restaurant chains have their roots in the kitchen of a frat house, but that’s exactly where Wing Zone was born 24 years ago. As juniors at the University of Florida, Matt Friedman and Adam Scott decided that an alternative to pizza delivery was needed for their peers in need of late-night fuel. They started delivering authentic Buffalo wings and fresh chicken tenders to undergrads from the kitchen of their fraternity house, developing their own distinctive flavors like Buffalo Bliss and Honey Q. The concept was so popular among the college crowd, that the pair soon opened their first storefront location in Gainesville, Florida as seniors (and co-owners) in college. By 1999, Wing Zone grew to seven locations and in 2000, franchising became an option. There are now over 100 locations in the U.S. and six countries. You can find the business in college/university areas throughout the Southeast, with locations at Kennesaw State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and University of Georgia. And now, the upscale, family-friendly WZ Tavern has joined the family in East Cobb.

What was your drive to start a business?
I read about restaurant entrepreneurs while in college and I was inspired by their stories. I loved the idea of starting a business that could work in a college market and have the ability to expand. I had a passion for wings, growing up in New York. And I found a void in Gainesville because no one offered wings there in 1993.

What makes WZ Tavern stand out? How do you give back?
I do speaking engagements about entrepreneurship at schools like Georgia Tech, Clayton State, and University of Florida. We hire at least one intern from local universities for our corporate office, which is based in East Cobb. I also coach the East Marietta Basketball League. I love mentoring kids in becoming better players and people.
Q
What do you love most about East Cobb?
East Cobb has a close-knit feel and a tremendous community vibe. It’s the perfect place to raise a family. On Friday nights, my wife and I always head to Lassiter [High School] football games with our kids. The Harrison Tennis Center is a mecca for tennis of all ages. We play in doubles and mixed doubles leagues, too. WingZone.com

If you told Julie Turner 30 years ago that she would one day be the owner of a coastal-meets-glamour boutique in the Highland Plaza Shopping Center (near the intersection of Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads), she probably wouldn’t have believed you. The pursuit of a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology originally brought her to Atlanta in 1982. After graduating with honors and co-oping at IBM followed by working in network operations for BellSouth, she hung up her corporate coat and shifted her focus to family. As a mother of three, Julianna, Becca, and Jack, Julie regularly made trips to the East Cobb Hallmark Store off Sandy Plains Road to pick up cards and gifts. When she found out her go-to shop was closing, she jumped into action. “I decided that I wanted to take the spot,” recalls Julie. She considered maintaining it as a Hallmark Store. “My girls were so funny. They were like, ‘Mom, you cannot make that an old lady store!’ That comment made me run the demographics for the Hallmark Store. And when I did, I found out that the average customer was a 48-year-old female. Well, I was a 48-yearold female!” However, when she realized selling Hallmark cards alone might not be sustainable, she followed the encouragement from her daughters to go a different route.

Since January of 2013, Ivy Lane, has been a thriving spot for colorful Bohemian-chic clothing, popular jewelry brands like Kendra Scott, home décor, and more. The store’s name came about after Julie found beautiful ivy growing along the back of the building. But it is what’s offered inside the shop that Julie is most proud of. “We offer styling assistance. We pick core pieces that customers can mix and match to fit their lifestyle, and flatter their shape,” she says. Even local celebrities like HGTV’s Anita Corsini of “Flip or Flop Atlanta” go to Julie for fabulous ’fits and finds.

Richard Becker SINGER • SONGWRITER • STUDENT By Katherine Michalak
Richard Becker, a 2013 Pope High School graduate and co-lead singer for the band Walden, has always considered music a hobby, but didn’t learn guitar until 9th grade. By his senior year, Richard played with bandmates Eric Hangartner, Andrew Mendel, and Jamie de Lange, guys he’d known for awhile. “Eric and I went to preschool together. And I knew both Jamie and Andrew from high school.” When Pope announced a talent showcase, Richard, Eric, and Andrew joined forces to perform. Afterward, they invited Jamie to join the band and then continued playing together throughout their last year of high school. They headed to different colleges—Richard and Jamie to Georgia Southern University, Eric and Andrew to University of Georgia—but missed playing together. They began meeting in Athens to practice almost every weekend, which led to some open-mic performances and gigs. “Athens is an amazing city for live music with so many venues,” Richard says. It was there that they built up a fan base.

And build one they did, eventually landing spots at the legendary 40 Watt Club and Georgia Theatre. “It’s such an honor to be part of the magic that’s happened there,” confesses Richard. That magic was about to take them even further as Walden competed in Road to Roo 2017, a battle of the bands competition awarding the winner a slot at this past summer’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. “We won and it was exhilarating,” Richard exclaims. “We played in one of the first sets of Bonnaroo to a great crowd that was really receptive to our indie-rock music.” Richard and Jamie have transferred to UGA, facilitating more focus on the band while also completing their degrees. “I’m an Environmental Engineering major, something else I’m passionate about. The name of the band, Walden, is a nod to [Henry David] Thoreau and transcendentalism. Now, my time is split evenly between school and the band. We’re all writing songs and immersing ourselves in the music.” The group’s top influences include Coldplay, and Mumford & Sons. “Their live performance energy inspires us to have as much energy onstage as they do,” he says of the latter band. Whenever Richard, 22, returns to East Cobb, he stays active. “I like hiking around the area or going over to East Cobb Park. And I like to get pizza from Frankie’s [Italian Ristorante].” As for what’s next? “We’re hoping to all move to Nashville after graduation in 2018,” Richard reveals. “We’re recording singles in the studio right now and they will be released next year.” Walden.Band

It’s clear that Cynthia Cabral loves what she does in her classroom. “It’s all about making learning fun,” she enthuses. “It’s important that sweet little 7 and 8 year olds never have anything to worry about.
Susanne Smith says that one of the biggest challenges of teaching first graders is—“Trying to keep up with them! They go nonstop all day. It’s also challenging trying to keep a straight face at some of the things they say,” she admits with a smile. The 2017-18 East Side Elementary School Teacher of the Year attributes her success educating these energetic students to staying current.

If I can make school a loving, fun, safe, secure place where they don’t have to worry and can just enjoy learning, then I’ve done my job!” She says she uses silly voices to capture students’ attention or has them break out in the middle of a lesson with a dancing “brain break” to keep it light. “I want my kiddos to love school and feel loved!”
“I try new things in my classroom and I’m passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. For instance, I use a variety of robots to teach coding to my students. I constantly seek opportunities to learn more so I can provide rich experiences for them.”
Jodi Day feels that teenagers typically get a bad rap. “Many adults don’t understand the hormonal fluctuations and issues kids face, so they mentally lump high school students together as stereotypical narcissists,” she laments. “Even though adolescents have their challenging moments, they’re wonderful. They see the world through fresh eyes. They motivate me to stay in this grossly underpaid profession!” She strives to keep it fresh in her classroom: “If I’m bored, they’re bored. I try to teach in a way kids will enjoy. Are they going to enjoy everything? No. But I
use whatever I can get my hands on to keep it interesting for them and for me.”
