Teachers can make a world of difference. For me, that was Dr. Gerald Grow. When I was in graduate school, he was my magazine journalism professor. After I graduated with my master’s, Dr. Grow arranged a meeting for me to meet with the executive editor of People magazine. That in-person get-together at our school’s job fair landed me an internship at People’s New York City headquarters followed by a full-time job offer less than three months later. One teacher believing in me played a major role in what I call a career of a lifetime!

Countertop Basics All About Granite & Quartz

Are new countertops something your home needs? The popular choices currently are granite and quartz. What are the differences between the two? • Granite is a natural material. It is mined, and like any natural rock, there are variations in the appearance of the slabs. It can stain or crack if care is not taken, and it must be sealed periodically. • Quartz is a manufactured product, and therefore has a more consistent appearance than granite. Quartz is made from quartz dust and resin, so it is nonporous and requires no sealing.

FALL 2018

We are seeing a migration away from granite, as many clients tell us, “I want something different.” While the starting price point on granite is lower than on quartz, there is a much wider price range on granite. Granite pricing is generally based upon availability/scarcity of the stone. Where the stone is quarried also affects the

pricing, as granite that comes from deeper beneath the earth’s surface makes it more rare and more costly. You may be wondering about marble. Marble is much more porous than most granite, and therefore requires more vigilant maintenance and sealing. Today’s quartz offers an extremely realistic marble visual and is much easier to take care of in a heavyuse area like a kitchen, so many homeowners choose quartz. Design Tip When choosing countertop colors, consider your kitchen’s lighting. If your kitchen has little or no natural light, select a color that has a significant amount of white, gold or light-colored specks. Dark colors like deep blue, mahogany and black look best in areas that receive substantial light. Come by today and let the Enhance Design Consultants help you select the perfect new countertops for your home!

As the owner of Back by Popular Demand, Melissa Morales’ East Cobb consignment boutique is a shopper’s sanctuary. She doesn’t only sell second-hand goods, she saves dogs too.

hen Melissa Morales was 15 years old and working part-time at a local consignment store, owning said store wouldn’t have been her dream. But just three years later, she found herself choosing that unexpected path over a degree in graphic design and a future as an art director. Morales bought Back by Popular Demand (BBPD) in 2002, originally in Downtown Lilburn. She overcame challenges and constantly made improvements (whilst learning hard lessons) before emerging as a successful business owner—not to mention a leading example in the consignment industry.

WHAT SHE’S LEARNED IS THAT YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR PRODUCT,

UNDERSTAND YOUR CLIENT AND

FALL 2018

STAND OUT.

20

Her 8,000-square-foot location in Lilburn is packed with a famous prom department and one of the biggest inventories of a consignment store anywhere in the state. As of 2010, it also includes her second location in East Cobb—one that’s constantly buzzing with customers thanks to its impressive collection of high-end designer handbags, clothing brands offered in a wide variety of sizes, and a notable

What she’s learned is that you have to know your product, understand your client (Morales has built quality relationships with her customers over the years) and stand out. BBPD offers its shoppers two options—to consign items or receive cash up front. The store also provides a huge—and authentic—inventory that changes daily. Added to pioneering the consignment industry’s online presence via social media and getting recognized for it on the front page of USA Today’s Money section, she’s set the bar by constantly offering inventory updates and competitive pricing. She even takes a nontraditional approach when it comes to her employees’ schedules. “This business exists so I can help other women,” says Morales. Having the ability to hire women who are stay-at-home moms and who can’t work a traditional 9-to-5 corporate America job means a lot to her. “Truly, it’s women-owned, women worked and women supported,” she says. The entrepreneur is eager to offer other shop owners advice. “I understand what it’s like to own your own store,” Morales says. She enjoys getting together with other small business owners. “We lean on each other and we know what each other is going through,” she says. “I want to help educate them so that they can be successful. They have someone to call when they have a bad day.” Back by Popular Demand exists for another reason as well—one slightly furrier than her unplanned career in fashion. She loves to rescue animals, and four legged friends are at the core of her passion. It started with Tucker—a beagle who showed up in her yard during a snowstorm. He followed Morales right into the house, where parasites, starvation, fleas and a myriad of other issues immediately came to the surface. “I couldn’t say no to him,” Morales says. “He needed a place to rest, he needed medical attention. He needed someone to just love him.” In a journey that can only be credited to God, Morales realized she was a magnet for dogs in need of help. Mimi, a miniature pinscher, revealed some of the horrific realities to breeding. She found Lucy, the treeing walker coonhound, in the middle of a triathlon. Another min pin, Zeke, she found online. Morales took each one in, helped them find homes, often showing them off at the store and hosting sale events to benefit them. Who would have thought fashion’s bark would have such a bite? HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DOGGONE DIFFERENCE

Melissa Morales grew up learning to share what little she had with someone who might need it more. That intrinsic generosity inspired her first sale to benefit animals in need and prove that it only takes one person—no grand gestures— to make a difference. “They need help, medical attention, and new owners have to be vetted—those things aren’t cheap,” says Morales, whose first sale gifted $15,000 to a local rescue and continues to evolve with the same fundamental cause that does some real good. You can also help by walking shelter dogs, attending rescue events, fostering pups in need and adopting new pets, instead of buying through a breeder. Heather Rees COMMUNITY ADVOCATE • MARKETING PRO • PHILANTHROPIST By Alex McCray

Full-time philanthropist Heather Rees knows the power of serving others. The Circle for Children president has not only seen the positive impact giving back can have on those who receive it, she has also experienced the healing benefits of selflessness. After losing her husband Phil, to cancer in January 2017, the nearly 20-year volunteer veteran found hope through her charity initiatives. “Volunteering has been super helpful for me. I relied on it a lot to keep me afloat this past year and a half,” Heather says. While the former marketing pro is no stranger to East Cobb (it’s been home since 1979), a desire to connect with neighbors in 2002 led her to become the president of the service-focused Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Club. The mother of five then went on to rack up presidential titles for the Parent Teacher Student Association of Sope Creek Elementary School, Dickerson Middle School, and Walton High School (where she was Volunteer of the Year).

“THIS COMMUNITY IS FULL OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DOERS. IT’S EASY TO BE INVOLVED BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS LIKE-MINDED IN THAT REGARD.” —Heather Rees

Today, she spearheads The Circle for Children, a nearly 100-year-old group with over 300 members. It has raised millions of dollars for Georgia organizations like Wellspring Living that provide education and aid to disadvantaged women and children. On Oct. 21, The Circle will join forces with local nonprofit, Children Helping Children, to take part in its free family service-oriented festival.

The spirit of involvement throughout East Cobb is something Heather particularly loves. “This community is full of people who are doers. It’s easy to be involved because everybody is like-minded in that regard.” You can catch Heather at J. Christopher’s or the new Taqueria Tsunami when she’s taking a break from changing the world. Top Teachers In East Cobb By Stacy Moser

hen you talk with teachers who are successful in their classrooms, the same concept comes up again and again. They speak about instilling a sense of

confidence and pride in their students—and they’re passionate about the process.

Their strategies and techniques may differ, but one common theme emerges: They

view students as individuals who may struggle, and even fail at times, but all kids have the potential to achieve great things as long as they sense that their teacher believes in them.

Addison Brooks says the key to a successful classroom is flexibility. “You have to get creative and really establish a relationship with the students you teach,” she explains. “What might have worked one year for a group of students doesn’t always work for the next.” She says she worries about students who are embarrassed about receiving special-education services because they think others will define them by that label. “And I also worry about students who don’t feel they have a connection to anyone.” Addison says she does everything she can to have a positive impact on children and their families.

Marcia Neilly marvels at how inquisitive her students are. “Middle school students are so eager to learn about the world around them! For sixthgraders in particular, they’re at a crossroad between elementary school and their preteen

Jasenda League says what she does in her classroom is nothing extraordinary—in fact, it’s quite simple. “From the moment my students walk in the door, I invest in them and I expect them to invest in themselves. When they succeed, I celebrate them. When they fail, I offer support for overcoming the next obstacle that

seek out the kids who have yet to realize their potential, because I used to be just like them.” She says it’s imperative for her to get to know each of her students well. “If you have a rapport with someone, it’s much more likely that they’ll be open to your guidance. I have to laugh, though, because I’m accidentally called ‘Mom’ all the time! It’s beautiful to watch how rapidly they mature. If I can make their transition a little easier, that’s icing on the cake.”

way she sparks creativity in her students is by offering an optional assignment called “Going Beyond.” “In a nutshell, students ‘teach’ their peers on a topic that interests them. They make a PowerPoint presentation, a game, a poster or a play to share with classmates about that topic. I am always thrilled to see their excitement for learning. The most important part of teaching is to teach kids what really matters in life—showing character in all they do and developing caring relationships.”
