Dear East Cobb Neighbors, Our community is growing by leaps and bounds. Every day I drive by or hear about new places I want to check out. But what really motivates me to try a new fitness class, spa treatment or restaurant is when I hear from others how great it is.

This is your opportunity to share your favorite places to go and people to know by nominating and voting in our 2020 My East Cobb Readers’ Choice Awards. Support your faves by going to atlantabestmedia.com to nominate and vote. Nominations can be submitted April 20 through May 4. Voting will take place May 7-21. And since we’re sharing, here are some of the places in East Cobb I love. Bagelicious This breakfast and lunch spot has been a part of East Cobb for as long as I can remember. Not only does it have tasty bagels, it also has the best tuna and egg salad around. High Country Outfitters I have known the Sloan family in East Cobb for more than 30 years. They own and operate the High Country stores, including the one located at The Avenue East Cobb. At any location, you can find everything you need for local and global adventure travel. Sope Creek Park Speaking of adventure, East Cobb is home to one of the most beautiful parks in Atlanta. Sope Creek’s trails and waterways offer a beautiful backdrop for everything from photography and meditation to hiking and biking. I can’t wait to hear about your favorite East Cobb people and places.

Curious about current design trends in tile? Elisabeth Stubbs, co-owner of Enhance Floors & More, says that large (18” x 18” and 20” x 20”) tiles are frequently installed, even in small rooms. Rectangular shapes (12” x 24”) are being used on floors and walls. Tiles with texture,

movement and shade variation are also trending. In terms of color, neutrals such as off-whites, beiges and grays are popular. 1847 Roswell Rd. enhancefloors.com

A Twist on Traditiona How Peach Out Power Yoga “Makes” Yogis in East Cobb By Jennifer Colosimo

hat’s better than a fitness studio featuring your favorite workout class every single day? One that offers every kind of workout class under one roof. That was the idea that launched the newly renamed Peach Out Power Yoga in East Cobb, its

new designation reinforcing the studio’s tried-and-true reputation for a fun, laid-back interpretation of traditional yoga. As a result, it’s the community’s one-stop shop for all things fitness. “The name Peach Out Power Yoga speaks to who we are,” says owner Karen Patton. “It’s been fun to create a name now that we really know who we are as a studio.” That “we” is a studio where anyone off the street can come in and feel comfortable and confident taking a yoga class. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, far removed from the perfect poses and beautiful bodies reputation some traditional yoga studios carry.

“We’re not your typical yoga studio,” Patton says. “We’re approachable, welcoming, people aren’t intimidated to come in. We’re extremely different in that we play fun music, we dance and we’re always trying new things. People have an image of what yoga is, and I think that can be scary for some, but our brand is vibrant, and although we absolutely deliver a powerful, traditional yoga class, we add our own twist and personality to it.”

Not being in Buckhead, Patton knew it wouldn’t be easy to attract yoga clientele. She sought to “make” yogis instead, and offered something different. On her class calendar you’ll see a little bit of everything: non-heated classes to hot power yoga, basic fundamentals and slow flow to advanced classes, and fitness-minded classes such as Yogalates, Sculpt & Flow, Yin and meditation. Every class adapts to fit a variety of skill levels, interests and workout personalities. Plus, Patton carries chic yoga gear (it’s the only local studio that sells lululemon), and new clients can try a class for free before committing to a membership.

“We’ve built such a great community,” says Patton, who started that camaraderie from the ground up, seeking out beginner yogis and offering them a place they could belong. “Everybody that walks through the door knows each other. This is their happy place, their home and the people here are truly their friends. I’m very proud of what I’ve built here. It is exactly what I had hoped for.” “You really have to come take a class so you know what I’m trying to describe, because there is just a feeling the second you walk in the studio,” says Patton, who teaches classes alongside a staff of 13 instructors. “We’ve got something really special. Every instructor brings their own personality, style and energy to their classes, and I think that’s why people connect—it’s authentic. My energy and what I envisioned, I think it’s infectious. My instructors embraced it from day one, and so did our clientele. It feels like one big family, really.” Because her instructors are part of her family, you’ll most likely spot Karen at her studio, but she does frequent the (also newly named) East Cobb Tavern and Los Bravos Mexican Restaurant and shops Ivy Lane in Marietta. Feel the Flow If there’s one thing Karen Patton has her finger on the pulse of, it’s what the people want—at least, when it comes to yoga practice. When she opened the studio, she knew she wanted a laid-back community for people to practice in—and she might just be a trendsetter. “If you want to bring the fitness/workout person to yoga, you have to meet their needs and give them something that they’re excited about,” says Patton. Her answer, and one that’s catching on quickly around town, is classes that get creative—maybe even a little funky. Her Rockin’ Flow class often kicks off with something creative like the cha cha slide or the cupid shuffle. People pack the room, and anyone who wants to can get “their butts kicked with a good workout.”

Nancy Whitesides CHILD ADVOCATE • DOG RESCUER • FITNESS ENTHUSIAST By Stacy Moser

As Nancy Whitesides walks her rescue pup, London, down the street in East Cobb, she reflects on the volunteer work she has undertaken since 2014, advocating for children who find themselves in Georgia’s foster-care system. Every week, Nancy visits children and their foster families to check on them, attends court hearings to report on their behalf and provides a friendly face as the kids navigate their new surroundings. “I’m honored to do it,” she says. “I have a master’s degree in counseling and thought it was a good fit for me now that my three sons are older. These foster kids—many of whom were neglected or abused—need somebody to advocate for them.”

ANYONE CAN DO THIS. WHETHER YOU’RE A YOUNG ADULT OR A SENIOR CITIZEN,

THE JOB IS TO ENSURE KIDS ARE SAFE, PROTECTED AND PLACED WITH ADULTS WHO CAN CARE FOR THEM. —NANCY WHITESIDES

APRIL – JUNE 2020

“Children are traumatized when they’re put in foster care,” she explains. “They’re not just placed with strangers in a new home, they’re faced with different food, a different bed, a different school—it’s terrifying. They don’t know what the future holds. That’s why court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are so important. We’re a consistent face for them. I meet with each child at least once a month until they are placed in a permanent ‘forever’ home. There are over 12,000 children in foster care this year in Georgia and over 6,000 have a CASA volunteer. But there are more than 40 children in Cobb County still waiting for one. We need volunteers!” Nancy says she’s met these children at school during lunch, at the park for a walk or at their home to play a game. “Anyone can do this,” she says. “Whether you’re a young adult or a senior citizen, the job is to ensure kids are safe, they’re protected, that they’re placed with adults who can care for them and consistently meet their needs.” She laughs, “I’ve gone to school concerts, graduations and dance recitals. I want that kid to look out in the audience and say, ‘Oh! That lady is here again!’” Stress management for Nancy isn’t a problem—she frequently visits CycleBar East Cobb and Sculpted Body Fitness Center for a workout on the Megaformer. facebook.com/CobbCASA

Rabbi Steven Lebow RABBI • ACTIVIST • HUSBAND By Cory Olesen

Rabbi Steven Lebow has been the leader of Temple Kol Emeth in East Cobb for over 30 years. “It’s not common,” says Steven. “I expected it to be a three- to five-year position.” But as the congregation grew from 40 families to over 400, he and his family were able to stay and put down roots. After 34 years, Steven is set to retire this spring, leaving behind a legacy of community activism and social justice. “I was not the most popular man in town,” Steven reminices, referring to his involvement with pro-gay rights during the early ’90s.

THERE WERE NO OTHER STRAIGHT CLERGYMEN WHO WOULD STAND UP FOR THEM [THE GAY COMMUNITY]. —RABBI STEVEN LEBOW

RABBI STEVEN LEBOW WITH HIS WIFE, MADELINE.

Another cause Steven is passionate about is Leo Frank. “It’s the most famous unsolved mystery case in the history of Georgia,” recounts Steven. In 1913, 13-year-old Mary Phagan was murdered and Frank was convicted, despite evidence pointing to another man, Jim Conley. After his appeals went all the way up to the Supreme Court, Frank’s sentence was eventually commuted to life imprisonment. Outraged, a group of locals formed a lynch mob that abducted Frank from prison in Milledgeville and drove him 175 miles back to Marietta, where he was hanged. Frank was granted a posthumous pardon in 1986, but Steven is seeking exoneration. When asked why he took up this particular cause, Steven replied, “He has no family members ... so it sort of fell to me to be Leo Frank’s rabbi.” He plans to continue to work on Frank’s case after he retires from Temple Kol Emeth. When the rabbi is not busy with services or bar and bat mitzvahs, he enjoys eating at Bagelicious and Frankie’s “on Roswell Road.”

In the spring of 1993, Cobb County passed a resolution that condemned homosexuality, sparking national criticism. After an invitation to the Cobb Citizens Coalition, which was fighting the resolution, Steven realized “there were no other straight clergymen who would stand up for them [the gay community] and my wife said, ‘You’ve got to do something.’ So I organized the resistance.” In the summer of ’94, he organized a gay rights demonstration on Marietta Square attended by thousands.

SELECTING FLOORING PRODUCT WITHOUT CONSIDERING YOUR NEEDS AND LIFESTYLE There is no universal “one size fits all” flooring choice. Remember to factor in components such as traffic, pets, kids, etc. Take the time to determine which product will best meet your lifestyle, budget, desired appearance, and maintenance. Our consultants can introduce you to products you have not considered or did not know existed.

2

NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE BUYING With hundreds of different products to choose from, choosing new flooring can be a daunting task. We help you to get the best quality product for your budget. All flooring is different. The more you know, the easier it will be to make the best choice for your home.

3

CHOOSING BASED ON A SMALL SAMPLE Deciding on the right color and shade of your new floor is very important. You want it to complement your home and décor. It is very difficult to get an accurate idea of what a color will look like based on a 2-inch sample. Whenever possible, use a larger piece of sample flooring to really see how the color will work in your home.

WINDOW COVERINGS

Q

I have a busy schedule. Is there a low-maintenance option for blinds?

A

PowerView® motorization by Hunter Douglas is a great option. It allows you to set scenes and schedule your window treatments to operate on their own throughout the day, whether Andrea and Sean Zare you are at home or away. Q

GUTTERS

What is fiber cement siding and why should I consider it?

A

Fiber cement siding is a composite of sand, cement and reinforced lattice of cellulose fibers that is rot-, fire-, and water-resistant. This siding far Charlie Dallavalle surpasses any vinyl or wood-based clad exterior, and its most attractive quality is its low maintenance.

What are telltale signs that it is time for a new gutter system?

A

If your current gutters are clogged, leak or overflow when it rains, cause water to pool up around your home’s foundation walls, are pulling away from your home, Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk or are just too expensive and a nuisance to clean, chances are it’s time.

ROOFING

Q

When is concrete lifting not an option?

A

Lifting is 30 to 70% cheaper, and it is a rare case when it isn’t an option. However, when the concrete is broken into small pieces, it is possible that trying to lift it would pop those Michael Cangemi fragments out. Another scenario where lifting might not be an option is if the amount of material required to lift was so large that it would be more cost effective to replace the concrete.

Q

How can I spot a failing roof and what should I do to fix or prevent that from happening?

A

Some aging is obvious—if your roof is more than 15 years old, it is time to get a new one. Sometimes, the roof can age and become discolored due to the sun. Shingle granules Chad Cruce tend to come off over time and can accumulate in the gutters. Algae can even grow if a roof does not have enough sun exposure. Check to see if your roof has any oxidation from the sun, any significant amount of algae, and/or if there is evidence of granules from the shingles coming into the gutters and downspouts.

Q A

If I have a waterproofing issue in one location, what are my options?

An issue in a singular location can be a symptom of a more systemic problem. Over time, the foundation drain that was installed when your house was constructed can clog with silt and allow water to find its way into your basement. Water that is building up around your entire foundation always starts in one location but typically doesn’t end there Derek Ritchie as time goes on. If you have water entering the basement through or under a poured concrete or block foundation wall, please contact a waterproofing professional to inspect your home and explain solution options.

What are the benefits of Marvin MODERN windows?

A

Marvin MODERN is a new product from Marvin that is exclusively available in Atlanta through AVI. FLOORING INSTALLATION

Q

What is the best flooring for my kitchen and why?

A

There is no “one size fits all” answer. Many homes have wood floors that look great, but water concerns and durability can be problematic in a heavily used kitchen. Tile is very easy to keep clean and lasts forever, but may not be the best choice for someone who is on their feet a lot. Laminate and LVT/ Elisabeth Stubbs LVP are great choices for kitchens, but cannot be refinished down the road. Find the floor that has the most pros and fewest cons for your situation.

Q

What are your recommendations when it comes to the types of coatings I should use for my shower door?

A

APRIL – JUNE 2020

There are several aftermarket coatings that protect glass and are easy to apply, including Clean-X® Invisible Shield and Rain-X® Shower Door Water Repellent. However, these coatings David Drexler wear off quickly and need to be reapplied often to remain effective. We recommend ShowerGuard® glass by Guardian Industries, which has a permanently bonded seal against stains and corrosion and comes with a lifetime warranty!

A garage door is usually the largest moving piece of equipment in your home. Like a vehicle or HVAC system, it needs maintenance. Often, an adjustment or general service including John Nale lubrication can get the door operating smoothly. A planned maintenance program is something that will usually catch these types of issues before they become problematic.
