By Stacie Hanna ccording to Greek philosopher Epictetus, we have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak. It’s a proverb often quoted but less often observed in our culture. Unless, that is, you’re in the company of restaurateur Doug Turbush, East Cobb resident and owner of three upscale restaurants in the area. Turbush, who opened Seed Kitchen & Bar to rave reviews in 2011 and Stem Wine Bar in 2013, both located in Merchants Walk, added to his collection with the opening of Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb earlier this year. The restaurants are well known for high-quality food, warm and attentive service and beautiful decor. Originally from Wisconsin, Turbush graduated with honors from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. He’s worked with renowned chefs in the U.S. and he spent a year cooking in Bangkok, Thailand—all experiences that prepared him to go out on his own.

“The area didn’t have chef-driven, upscale restaurants yet, which was appealing,” Turbush says about his neighborhood. “It’s exceeded all expectations. We’ve found the community to be generous with its appreciation, support and feedback.”

The man behind them is a quiet force who listens carefully and speaks with purpose. What his customers and employees say—through words and actions—guides him. “The customers tell me what they want,” he says. And Turbush is listening. Enthusiastic popularity with each restaurant’s opening confirms he’s measured demand with keen accuracy, meeting a need in the market. Most agree it’s the consistency of the guest experience that keeps each restaurant earning accolades and customer loyalty. Turbush is known

Fifteen years ago, Turbush and his wife, Pranee, made East Cobb home because of its reputation as a great place to raise a family. When he decided to open his own restaurant after years as executive chef at Bluepointe and Nava in Buckhead, Marietta was the clear choice.

for exacting standards. He buys the highest-quality ingredients he can find and expects service at his restaurants to match. He describes himself as fortunate to be surrounded by energetic and talented people. In turn, he empowers them to grow professionally and sets an example with his own hard work and accountability. “Doug is so humble. It’s cool to see him behind the scenes, working as hard as anyone in the restaurant,” says Carmen Titleman, a long-time East Cobb resident who frequently dines and hosts events at all three restaurants. “We use them almost like a country club. The food is always flavorful and they take pride in knowing who you are, where you like to sit and what you like to eat and drink.” Creating an environment in which restaurant professionals can grow is key to his approach. He’ll do anything it takes and he expects the same in return from his staff. He asks them to be their own toughest critics, as he is for himself.

“He’s a genius chef and businessman with integrity that’s unmatched in this industry,” says Jason Raymond, director of operations for Turbush’s three locations. “He looks for ways to keep employees engaged long term. He’s grateful for the support of every customer and the hard work of each employee. That sets a tone of genuine hospitality within the company.” The support, Raymond says, is second to none. Chefs are encouraged to try new ingredients and equipment. If an employee completes professional training—earning sommelier certification, for example— Turbush covers the cost when they pass the course. Drift’s opening provided quite a few promotions for Seed staff veterans along with job opportunities for new talent. Most days and nights, you can spot Chef Turbush in the kitchen at Seed, Stem or Drift. With his family, he travels to Pranee’s native Thailand every other year. This summer, he’ll travel to Germany, Switzerland and Austria with his family, motivated by 13-year-old son Jack’s studies of the German language. Over the years, his travels have inspired him and influenced his cooking. We can’t wait to get a taste of what’s next for this restaurateur.

Chris McNeill, general manager of Seed Kitchen & Bar/Stem Wine Bar says, “Typically, summer foods have a brighter profile due to higher acid contents from the lighter, fresh ingredients. When pairing wines with these kinds of foods, we like to match acid to acid, as well as some lowertannin red styles.”

Interior designer Ann Wisniewski moved to East Cobb at the tender age of four and has lived here ever since. “My father was an aeronautical engineer and got a job at Lockheed. My mother was a nurse. This is home! I love the growth East Cobb is experiencing. I hope it continues.” Ann actually started out following in her mother’s footsteps, becoming a nurse. But she kept getting little nudges from somewhere inside herself, feeling, “that creative side of me was always there.” She decided to follow her instincts, returning to school and getting her BFA in interior design. “It’s truly my passion and I have never looked back.”

architectural styles that I am seeing.” Ann lists shopping, visiting farmer’s markets and art galleries and dining at local restaurants as some of her favorite activities around East Cobb. “I love to take friends to farm-to-table restaurants, such as Seed. And, on a quiet weekend afternoon, I enjoy the local markets and festivals. My creative mind is always looking for new things to inspire me. But, I truly relax when I end the day with a dinner outside on our porch.”

Ann notes that East Cobb’s design style has mostly a traditional feel, with some newer buildings using contemporary, transitional and urban farmhouse styles. In general, these are predominantly established neighborhoods with many homeowners ready to update their property. “I personally like to mix styles with what is popular now in interiors,” Ann says. “I love how homeowners are opening up the space in their homes. I also love the mixture of

Ann believes that a beautiful, functional space provides a sanctuary. “My projects not only capture the look and feel my clients want to achieve, they create healthy environments for their lives. And, there is such energy in this industry to create atmospheres that support healthy living and [at the same time] support our environment by using organic materials, as well as energy-efficient and recycled products.”

What brought you to East Cobb?
We’ve been here for eight years, moving here from Northern Virginia, just outside of D.C. My husband was offered
a great job, and company headquarters were located near Windy Hill. With our family in mind, we researched neighborhoods and selected East Cobb as an amazing place to raise a family. The area is constantly improving: new developments, new medical centers, new restaurants and, most importantly for us, upgraded schools.
Q
Tell us how Sportabella, your women’s sportswear company, got started.
All six of my kids have been athletes and I have been active as a coach and a fan for much of the last 20 years. At one point, it dawned on me that while boys had some wicked cool sportswear and gear, particularly on the lacrosse field, the girls didn’t have the same. So, I decided to make some. Although I still had five kiddos at home, I figured it may be the perfect time to start a company. After talking to my family about the idea—bam—Sportabella was born!
Q
Describe the “personality” of your East Cobb.
First and foremost, it’s very welcoming. I’ve lived in
Q
Where are some of your favorite places to hang out in East Cobb?
Apart from our house, where we spend a lot of time, Frankie’s Italian Restaurant and Los Arcos are great walkable family restaurants. Ege ROCKS sushi as well as any place we’ve ever been (including Japan). AJ’s is a perfect stop for a beer, oysters and a Cajun po-boy. For date night, you can’t beat Seed or Stem. I have five girls who all love to shop, and we spend a lot of time at The Avenue and Merchants Walk.

happens on FOX’s homemakeover show “Home Free,” hosted by licensed contractor and homeimprovement TV personality Mike Holmes. The show’s first season featured nine couples, all of them DIY enthusiasts, with inspiring back-stories that proved they each deserved to win a home. The couples competed each week to renovate a room that was assigned to them in a run-down house. Then, as the renovations were completed, the rooms were judged by Danisha Danielle, a licensed broker and investor, and by the host of HGTV’s “Curb Appeal,” architect and interior designer John Gidding. The prize at the end of the week? One couple won the home and walked away with the keys.

As explained by the show’s creators,
1. Fool the Eye A clever use of wood slats and the bright blue color breaks up the boring expanses of wall in the front yard. A faux patio was created using stone pavers in a grid pattern, surrounded by gray beach pebbles. The wood trellis on the right defines the front garden space as a place to relax. Hot red and pink plants add contrast to the cool colors. 2. Make It Disappear An unsightly view was blocked by a chevronpatterned wood wall at the end of the deck. Simple shelves allow space for candle sconces. 3. Dive In An easily accessible lower garden features a “smart” hot tub.

“In each episode, Holmes presents the couples with tasks designed to test their DIY skills. Holmes is with them every step of the way—demanding that they meet his high standards. In a surprise twist, not only do the couples work together to restore the dilapidated home, but they all live together there for the entire week. So, the more they accomplish, the better they sleep at night.”
5. Glass with Class Dramatic pendant lights by Progressive Lighting lend a whimsical, modern touch to the kitchen and dining area. Dark brown Waypoint cabinets with simple modern handles ground the kitchen design and bring out the veining in the Dekton Aura countertops by Cosentino.
In one episode, the Marietta home featured here was remodeled. It was dubbed a “modern wannabe” due to its run-down, midcentury architectural style. Three remaining teams were tasked with designing either the living room, upstairs loft or backyard deck. Once each team decided on a space to renovate, host Holmes threw them a curveball, telling each couple that they must incorporate custom-designed concrete and plywood features in each space. Fortunately for them, the couples had help to accomplish their renovations—the “Home Free” crew of contractors and designers worked tirelessly in the background to remodel the rest of the house and to bring each couples’ vision for their room to fruition. The exterior was given a multidimensional facelift to divert attention from its unattractive sloping roof. The wood façade added warmth with a modern structural twist and the landscaping, with funky hanging swings, created a welcoming front yard/ lounge area. Upon entering the home, the ambiance is bright, airy and open. The soft gray hardwood floor by Armstrong Flooring has a textured appearance and serves as a neutral base for the home’s color palette. For the stairs, sleek, stainless-steel cable railing was installed as an alternative to traditional wood railing. “Keeping the space visually connected was important and could have been difficult with the split-level stairway,” says Andrew Penny, vice president of marketing and advertising at Feeney, Inc. “Our CableRail is often chosen as a means to keep sightlines unobstructed, whether used for an interior stairway or exterior deck.” Down the stairs and into the kitchen, colors alternated between dark and light, with the deep-brown cabinets by Waypoint Cabinets and Dekton by Cosentino countertops and backsplash. “This open-concept, loft-style home needed a surface that would maintain its beauty as the focal point of the bottom level,” explains Samantha Anderson, media and communications manager for Cosentino. “The veining in Dekton Aura ties flawlessly into the sleek, brown cabinetry. Even better, the Dekton countertops and backsplash will stay looking just as perfect as the day they were installed.” To give an authentic mid-century appeal, a vintage-inspired refrigerator, range and hood by Smeg were included in the layout. Function and design combine in the spherical pendant lights by Progressive Lighting in the kitchen and dining room. In the lower-level living room, contestants Tiffany and Oreonna used Quikrete to create a concrete chair with a plywood backrest, a concrete coffee table and custom artwork. To offset those gray tones, they brought in a stitched brown leather sofa and cowhide rug, both by Cromatti Furniture. Upstairs in the loft, husband-and-wife
duo Ben and Kasey created a smooth concrete frame to surround the fireplace, which immediately captured the attention of the judges. Adjacent to the fireplace, they

4. Neutral Is the New Black The neutral walls and soft gray and tan hardwood flooring by Armstrong Flooring contrast nicely with the crisp lines of the black-painted railings and the dark wood dining table and cabinets. The contestants’ concrete chair next to the stairs is a quirky nod to modern design.

created a square-patterned, plywood accent wall with cylindrical concrete sconces for an additional unique accent.

In the back of the home, contestants Kate and Andi updated the deck railing with Feeney CableRail, and the outdoor bar and dining area were accented by a geometrical plywood wall warmed with ambient candle lighting. The casual entertaining area featured the sisters’ concrete chaise lounge. Beyond the deck, a hot tub from Atlanta Spa & Leisure was added to provide an alternative outdoor relaxation space for this ultramodern home.

“This house is a contemporary, environmentally friendly smart home,” says Adam Burke, president of Atlanta Spa & Leisure. “The Maax Collection 471 hot tub is equipped with a Wi-Fi feature that allows the owner to control the tub’s jets, LED lights and sound system through a smartphone app. The tub’s insulation is made with recycled blue-jean material called BlueMaax, which dampens the sound of the tub.” The contestants of the home-improvement show not only revitalized the house, but the quality of life for its new occupants as well. In this episode, Atlanta-based fashion designers Kate and Andi, who were competing to win a house for their aging parents, received the keys to the newly remodeled home.
