From the Founder A Holiday Season for Our Community As we roll into the 2021 holiday season, there are some special opportunities in our community to make a difference. Not just our neighborhood community, but our personal community of friends, family and other people who make up our inner circle. For many of us, the holidays are a flurry of activity and quite often a rinse-and-repeat of traditions that have served us well for many years. While traditions are important, it is also important to consider the times we are in and how we might approach the holidays this year with the added intention of serving those in our area who could really use the extra love and support. Our local business community needs us to shop with them and support them! I know ordering on Amazon is easy, but Amazon will be just fine. The merchants in our area need us to turn out in force both for gift-giving and festive holiday meals and celebrations. Our circle of friends, family, teachers, grocery store workers, house cleaners, postal workers, etc., are out there keeping our community working and running smoothly. Let’s be intentional about remembering all they do to go above and beyond during the holiday season. All of this neighborly love, support and giving will go a long way toward making this a happy and beautiful season for all. Wishing you a very merry holiday season,

Whether it’s to fill a cavity or straighten your teeth, Dr. Michael A. Thomas Jr. of Marietta Smile Gallery is the dentist whose chair you want to be in. By Jill Becker
D
r. Michael A. Thomas Jr. is a dentist with that little something extra. Less than a year after opening Marietta Smile Gallery in 2018, Thomas was awarded Fellowship status from the Academy of General Dentistry, a distinction that less than 10% of all general practice dentists in this country have achieved. “What it means is that as a general practitioner, you’re committed to continuing education,” says Thomas. “You have to do 500 hours of continuing education and pass an exam. It’s challenging to get, but it was a goal I had wanted to achieve since graduating from dental school.”
Thomas’ strive for excellence isn’t the only thing that draws people to his Marietta practice. “I feel like one of the things that make us stand out has to do with where I come from,” says Thomas. “I grew up in a small town outside of Augusta, and we all went to the same dentist and doctor forever. But Atlanta is a more transient city, so people are less likely to establish relationships with their providers. I want all of my patients to feel like this is their dental home. I have two patients, in fact, who moved to Boston, but they come back twice a year for their dental visits.”

Research potential dentists and their practices. “Besides reading Google reviews,” says Thomas, “you can call the office and schedule a tour so you can meet the doctor and hygienists and ask any questions you may have about if they do sedation or anything else that may help calm your fears.” Fess up. “Let your dentist’s office know that you’re not comfortable and how going to the dentist makes you feel,” says Thomas. “That way, they can tailor the appointment to your needs.”

Kim Cooper’s life forever changed when her eldest daughter, Taylor, was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer at 4 years old. Thanks to the outpouring of support for her own daughter’s treatment, this 48-year-old mother of two has made it her life’s mission to help other children.
What do you love most about being over 40? Kim Cooper: I love that with age truly comes wisdom and confidence, and not the kind that you learn in books. Having gone through many of life’s changes, both good and bad, has given me a sense of grace that I never allowed myself in my earlier years. It has also given me a deeper appreciation and different perspective on the simple things.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? KC: My children are my best accomplishment. After having my oldest daughter, Taylor, and dealing with her cancer diagnosis, I had multiple failed pregnancies. After extensive infertility testing and multiple surgeries, by the grace of God I had my youngest daughter, Ella. They are my heart and soul. My “miracle” accomplishment, however, is that I reunited our family after being divorced from their dad for four years and we just remarried in December 2020. I am also extremely blessed to have a granddaughter on the way!
KC: It initially started with the Make-A-Wish Foundation after my daughter was granted a wish in 2006. This led me to the founding of Stars and Cigars, an annual community event with the goal of granting another child’s wish every year. Since 2005, myself and a team of dedicated volunteers have been able to grant 25 children’s wishes in Georgia. As President of the Board and Co-Program Director at Children Helping Children, I’ve been able to mentor and guide our junior board to empower and nurture their young philanthropic efforts. We are excited to have just completed our LOVETRAIN, which will provide mobile programming for Atlanta area schools with our compassion curriculum.
Where do you go for “me time?” KC: Massages, meditation and shopping are always great for me time. It really depends on what mood I am in. I love hitting up Heather May Skincare when I am in need of a facial.
What are some of your favorite places in East Cobb? KC: For a cute new outfit or home decor, I love heading to Ivy Lane. When I need a bite to eat, I head to Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar or Zama Mexican. I take a stroll around East Cobb Park at least a few times a week, and SPENGA is my go-to when I need to get a workout in. chcatlanta.org
