From the Editor

myEast Cobb MY

Dear East Cobb Neighbors, I’m excited about 2020! I’m not sure if it’s just because I love even numbers, or what have you, but you’ll always hear me say, “Change is good.” Whether you plan on being a give-back hero (see p. 34) or you’d like to visit a “smart gym” for the first time (see p. 13), give it a go! As for me, I plan to push the envelope. 2020 is going to get the best version of Laura J. Here are my top three goals: Ready to Run: I’m participating in my first half marathon!

“I want to check out Spanish in Atlanta to learn Spanish because I’ve always wanted to be bilingual.”

three-month calendar “I’d like to work on refurbishing my house and yard. A trip to Outrageous Interiors might be in my future soon.”

Curious about current design trends in tile? Elisabeth Stubbs, co-owner of Enhance Floors & More says that large (18” x 18” and 20” x 20”) tiles are frequently installed, even in small rooms. Rectangular shapes (12” x 24”) are being used on floors and walls. Tiles with texture,

movement, and shade variation are also trending. In terms of color, neutrals such as off-whites, beiges, and grays are popular. 1847 Roswell Rd. enhancefloors.com

Hear the Differen PRO F I L E

Dr. Melissa Wikoff at Peachtree Hearing will change the way you experience The award-winning doctor offers patients first-rate technology, custom treat By Jennifer Colosimo

D

r. Melissa Wikoff started her career in audiology for a pretty straightforward reason—her grandfathers. One too many special moments interrupted by hearing aid feedback gave her the fuel she needed as a college student to pursue something better for them. Her mentor at the

National Institutes of Health illustrated how she could change lives through hearing, and the rest is history. She opened Peachtree Hearing in 2016 and has been helping patients—young and old—ever since. “As a new mother, it was important for my work to feel meaningful if I wasn’t staying home with my kids,” says Dr. Wikoff, a mom of two young children. “In my field, I get the chance to change lives. I get to help people stay connected, active, and live happier lives. That makes a big difference to me. Owning my own practice allows me to maximize what I think is important.”

“ I DON’T WANT MY PATIENTS TO GO

THROUGH LIFE FEELING LIKE THEY HAVE A LOSS. I WANT THEM TO OVERCOME THAT LOSS SO THAT THEY CAN

RECONNECT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY.” With her finger on the pulse of technology, patients have more options for hearing aids. Practically invisible and able to connect to your iPhone, they double as headphones, fitness trackers, and microphones. They’re remotely programmable, meaning Dr. Wikoff, who is on the board of the American Tinnitus Association, can help patients living in Mexico, vacationing on 30A, or stuck on the other side of town.

DR. MELISSA WIKOFF (LEFT) LOOKS INSIDE A PATIENT’S EAR.

20 020-025_0120_MyEC PROFILES.indd 20

As a boutique practice, Dr. Wikoff also has the freedom to offer unmatched versatility in affordability and choice. That includes earwax removal and balance testing, in-ear monitors for musicians, prosthetics for actors, and custom protective earpieces for hunters and concertgoers.

Dr. Wikoff exercises her passion outside the realm of her immediate patient Rolodex. As a certified yoga instructor, she teaches chair yoga to improve core strength and balance in seniors and caretakers. Since 2017, she’s fitted 25 (and counting) Holocaust survivors with high-end hearing aids through her nonprofit, Hearing for Holocaust Survivors, giving them not only the gift of hearing, but care for life. “The bottom line is, I don’t want my patients to go through life feeling like they have a loss,” Dr. Wikoff says. “I want them to overcome that loss so that they can reconnect with friends and family and the things that are important to them. To be able to hear is to participate in life, and nobody should go without that. For instance, hearing a funny joke from a grandkid, attending a performance, having a conversation with family over dinner ... I don’t want anyone to miss important moments like these.” In East Cobb, the Wikoffs frequent Camps Kitchen & Bar for its Spaghettini Pomodoro and Rhythm Dance Center for tap dancing. Plus, they also volunteer at Aloha to Aging where they spend time with seniors. Peachtree Hearing, peachtreehearing.com, 4939 Lower Roswell Rd., #107, Marietta, 470-485-4327. Sounds and Silence As one of the only practitioners in Georgia working to treat tinnitus (a sensation of noise in the ears), Dr. Melissa Wikoff uses her expertise to relieve symptoms like hearing ringing in the ears, insomnia, and dizziness with advanced technology and therapy. That can include mindfulness or cognitive behavioral therapy in conjunction with sound therapy. “I studied mindfulness right here in East Cobb at East Cobb Yoga and Mindfulness with Lisa Wellstead,” Dr. Wikoff says. “I have found it to be very effective as part of a multidisciplinary approach to treating tinnitus. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, so with a network of specialists, we can develop a highly customized treatment plan for each individual patient.”

JANUARY – MARCH 2020

“My patients get someone who really understands how hearing science works,” Dr. Wikoff says. “They also have access to the most technologically advanced and highly customizable options, largely because we offer the widest range of different hearing DR. MELISSA WIKOFF (LEFT) WITH A PATIENT. aid manufacturers, models, and price ranges. We also spend time getting to know our patients so that we can make a recommendation that is right for every part of their lifestyle and hearing loss. Your hearing loss may look the same as someone else’s on paper, but every patient perceives sound differently. Their needs are different, their brains process sound differently, and they’re going to want and need different things out of their hearing aids.”

Thirty-four. That’s the number of Brazilian Wax by Andreia salons there are throughout the Southeast. Andreia Guilmet founded her first salon in 2005 after spending five years making house calls and working out of her home. As an emigrant from Brazil with less than $500 in her pocket when she arrived, Andreia had to overcome everything from navigating red tape to learning a third language, but the East Cobb resident says throughout those challenges, one thing remained steadfast—her faith. “The reality is that there are day-to-day challenges out of our control that present themselves and must be navigated. When one realizes that it is not possible to control every situation, you begin to rely on faith. It is my faith in God that keeps me and my business moving forward.”

Q

What advice do you have for building a team that contributes to a brand’s success?

Andreia Guilmet: Everyone has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. You have to be patient and trusting while tapping into everyone’s individual strengths. I respect my team members and give them space to grow. Watching them evolve over the years fills my heart and makes me proud.

Q

AG: The beauty industry is endless; there will always be opportunities for an entrepreneur to enter the market and fill a need. But women have a unique opportunity to cater to a different clientele, that men are unable to cater to. Over the past 10 years, we have seen more and more multimillion-dollar companies being founded, owned, or operated by women. Inspiring the younger generation is very important, and I believe we should all strive to be fruitful and productive in order to leave a legacy behind.

Q

Where do you spend your time when you’re not building your salon empire?

AG: My husband and I like to spend time at East Cobb Park and we are also members of CrossFit East Cobb. When there’s time to shop, you can find me at Southern Comforts on Johnson Ferry Road. brazilianwax.com

Rhonda Hunt

MASTER BAKER • MOGUL MOM • COMMUNITY CHEERLEADER By Barbra Buoy

East Cobb residents can thank a tight-lipped neighbor for Rhonda Hunt’s “insanely good” pecan shortbread cookies. “I grew up eating them, and I loved them,” says Rhonda. “I asked my neighbor who used to bake them, ‘Can you please just give me the recipe?’ And she wouldn’t do it! So, I just figured it out myself.”

WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. WE ARE A VERY TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY. WE LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER. —RHONDA HUNT After a brainstorming session with her husband, Randall, Rhonda settled on the business name Lucille’s Confections, after her maternal grandmother. She launched Lucille’s Confections in February 2019. In just one month, she had expanded her shortbread line to four flavors: the Original Pecan Shortbread, Chocolate Chip Toffee Pecan Shortbread, Chocolate Chocolate Chip Pecan Shortbread, and Lemon Shortbread (does not contain pecans). “I always sell out of the lemon. People love that flavor!” Rhonda says. She has plans to expand her offerings to include other items in the future. Lucille’s Confections items are currently sold at the Marietta Square Farmers Market (only on Saturdays), local festivals, and additional spots around town. Rhonda and her family have lived in East Cobb for five years and have no intention of moving. The area’s excellent schools, inclusiveness, and family-friendly environment are what she values the most. “Plus, the residents are by far the nicest people you’d ever want to meet,” Rhonda says. “We love our neighborhood. We are a very tight-knit community. We look out for each other.” When Rhonda isn’t perfecting new products in the kitchen, you can find her grabbing a bite to eat at Lemon Grass Thai Restaurant. She also enjoys working out at East Cobb Park and shopping at Funky Flair Boutique. etsy.com/shop/lucillesconfections

Handmade with all-natural ingredients, such as butter, flour, and confectioners’ sugar, Rhonda’s cookies had always been a holiday hit with family and friends. However, building a baked-goods empire was never her plan, even though she’d always wanted to own her own business. An unsuccessful job search after the birth of her son, Alexander, finally jump-started her dream. “I said, ‘You know what? I’m going into business for myself,’” Rhonda says.

Q

When are do-it-yourself repairs not an option?

A

A garage door system operates under high tension, and can be extremely dangerous. Unless you are performing basic lubrication of moving parts, programming remotes or replacing batteries, any repairs needed to a garage door should be left to a trained professional. John Nale

Q

How often do I need to clean out my gutters?

A

Most homeowners clean their gutters one to four times per year. We recommend cleaning typical gutter systems twice a year. The most important Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk times of the year to clean your gutters are spring and fall, as leaves and debris pile up most during these seasons due to thunderstorms in the spring or foliage in the fall.

ROOFING

WINDOW REPLACEMENT

Q

What roof upkeep should I be aware of for the winter and what is one thing I can do for all seasons?

A

It is important to inspect your flashing. Flashing is an extra-protective part of your roof designed to direct water to run off the slope of the roof. In all seasons, we suggest keeping your Chad Cruce gutters clear so that your gutters do not clog up with debris. The added debris can lead to standing water, which can cause damage to your fascia, soffit, and siding.

A

The U-factor indicates how well a window keeps heat inside your home. The lower the number, the better the insulating qualities. This is important in colder regions. Just Peter Morrison as important is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which measures how much radiant heat a window allows into your house. The lower the number, the less heat is allowed in, which is important in warmer regions or summer months.

SIDING

Q

What can I do to avoid warping or buckling?

A

First things first. It is invaluable that siding is installed to the direct specifications provided by the manufacturer. Also, ensure the structural support that your home’s siding is Charlie Dallavalle nailed to is perfectly vertical. Regular maintenance is also a must. Keep your wooden siding painted and sealed to avoid exposure and deterioration.

WATERPROOFING

FLOORING INSTALLATION

Q

How do I know which waterproofing product(s) I need?

A

Before rushing to purchase waterproofing products that are available at your local home improvement store or even on late-night infomercials, we always recommend having a professional waterproofing specialist evaluate your specific issue to fully explain the causes and explain the different options for repair. Some repairs can be as simple as Derek Ritchie sealing a crack, while others may require a drainage system on the outside or inside of your home.

Q

I’m going back and forth on what type of flooring I want in my house. What are three things I need to know in order to make a decision?

SHOWER ENCLOSURES

Q A

What do you recommend if I have a shower leak?

Consider your lifestyle and maintenance needs. Some floors require far more upkeep than others. Think about how long you will be in your home and choose a floor that will still look Elisabeth Stubbs nice when you put your home on the market. Realistic budgets are also a must. Choose as nice a flooring as your budget will allow as it will perform better and last longer than bargain flooring.

It depends on where you see the leak. If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing]. If the water is spotting the ceiling below or appearing on the paint adjacent to your shower, then the David Drexler tile or pan may not be sealed properly. A tile professional or plumber may be required. A Drexler representative would be happy to help diagnose your leak.

CONCRETE

WINDOW COVERINGS

Q

Do cracks in my concrete always mean foundation issues?

A

No, it is possible the cracks are superficial but do not self-evaluate your situation. It’s preferable to have a professional assess your problem to pinpoint your specific Michael Cangemi solution. Most good contractors will provide an evaluation and free estimate.

A

The most common mistake that people make is not purchasing their window treatments through a Andrea and Sean Zare reputable and knowledgeable dealer. You need guidance with making the right decision on the perfect window coverings for your home or business. We are there with you all the way, even to installation. It’s important that your consultant helps you meet both your functional and aesthetic needs.

The instrumental, choral, and theatrical talents of over 200 Walton High School students were showcased on Sept. 16. The performances were part of the grand opening celebration for the school’s new performing arts center. In November 2019, the drama program hosted its first production, “Matilda the Musical,” at the center. 1590 Bill Murdock Rd. waltondrama.com

Families now have a new way to share their positive experiences with The Boy Scouts of America, thanks to the BSA Parents program. Local parents Dan and Meaghan Timko recently helped launch the program in the metro Atlanta area. The Timkos also started a Scout Troop for girls at The Walker School. 700 Cobb Pkwy. Did you know that even before your baby’s first tooth appears, his or her gums can benefit from careful attention? “After breast- or bottle-feeding, wrap one finger with a clean, damp washcloth or piece of gauze and gently rub it across your baby’s gum tissue,” says Dr. Azi Nia of Nia Pediatric Dentistry. 1111 Johnson Ferry Rd., #200. niadentistry.com
