Be Nice to Your Neighbors

FOUNDER Sherri Adair
Let’s face it, we have all been through it this past year and as we move into 2021, there is something we can all do to help each other out—be nice. It sounds like something our mothers used to say to us and our siblings during a long road trip, and it’s not always easy, but it is ALWAYS good. We need to remember that we are all feeling the effects of the pandemic and that we are each dealing with our own challenges and fears. But before we can extend kindness to others, we also need to remember to be kind to ourselves. It is OK if the house is a bit of a mess, it is OK if you are feeling burnt out or overwhelmed. It’s OK if you feel scared. We need to center ourselves, remind ourselves of our many blessings, and take a second to be grateful for what we do have. Once we’ve done that, we can start to share that energy at home by consciously reminding ourselves to have a little extra patience with our partners and children who may be struggling too. We can extend that mindset to our neighbors and our community too. A wave and a smile go a long way toward promoting positivity. Whether it’s a word of encouragement to the grocery store clerk who has been standing on his/her feet for eight hours or the person who needs to shift into your lane in traffic, just do it. It is really not that hard to put others first. You may just make someone’s day. Who knows—East Cobb is known as a great place to raise a family. So the kindness that we promote today could be carried over for generations to come.

If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then Nicki and Andrew Wheeler will likely live long, healthy lives. The spouses of 15 years are the CEO and head ciderist respectively of Treehorn Cider in Marietta, a craft cidery that transforms the juice of fermented apples into a low-alcohol beverage that’s rapidly gaining popularity across the country. This forty-something pair gave up their office jobs to help start Treehorn back in 2014 with five other partners, and the fruits of their labor can now be found at more than 500 restaurants, bars, package and grocery stores across Georgia and Alabama. In 2017 they added a tasting room to their brewing facility, where visitors can sample ciders infused with everything from cherries to chile peppers. When first presented with the idea of opening a cidery in 2013, Nicki says, “Our first instinct was: Cider? Like many people, we had only had supersweet ciders before really starting to explore the history of cider and the wide variety of styles.” Soon they were experimenting with making hard cider at home to ensure they could actually do it.
SEPARATING OUR HOME LIFE FROM WORK LIFE IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE, SO IT’S GOOD WE DO SOMETHING WE LOVE. —NICKI WHEELER
When asked what Treehorn ciders they like best, Andrew says, “Probably Miyabi. It’s flavored with shiso and yuzu, and nobody else makes anything like it.” Nicki’s favorite is Treehorn Roots. “It’s zero sugar and drinks like a very dry white wine with strong apple and tropical fruit notes,” she says. When not slaving away at Treehorn, the duo likes to head to Sope Creek Park. “We love the refuge of quiet and nature,” says Nicki. “And our dog really loves splashing in the creek.” Nicki says their other top spots include The Wing on Roswell Road (“we’ve been eating there for decades”) and Heywood’s Provision Company (“one of the best butcher shops in the metro area”), where Andrew apprenticed for more than a year before starting Treehorn. treehorncider.com

Working together so closely day in and day out can present challenges. “We’re still married, so that’s something,” says Nicki. “All kidding aside, it takes a lot of balance, humor and grace. Separating our home life from work life is nearly impossible, so it’s good we do something we love.” After being around apples all day, you might think the Wheelers would get sick of them. But they insist they don’t. “They really are the best fruit,” says Nicki. (Honeycrisp and Pink Lady are favorite varieties for both.)

East Haven brings luxury to downsizing with elegant townhomes featuring the newest modern con
L
ocal East Cobb developer, Patrick Clark, has been developing award-winning communities for over 30 years. As a 35-year resident of East Cobb, Patrick saw a unique opportunity right in his own backyard for a luxury, maintenance-free 55 and Better community in the heart of East Cobb. With aging parents living in another state, the concept held a very personal appeal. “I was familiar with the proposed location as it is immediately adjacent to The Wood Acres school campus that my son Kevin attended,” says Patrick. “In addition to my son attending the school, the original owners of Wood Acres, Dave and Kay Clark, were our neighbors and very dear friends. “The school is nestled into a peaceful setting reminiscent of the school my mother taught at for 40 years back in Michigan. With my mother now retired, it dawned on me that a neighborhood bordering such a quiet and serene setting would be very appealing to her and others like her.
MY EAST COBB
“As East Cobb grew over the years, I noticed there are few options to downsize to a new luxury home with all the newest styles and conveniences. The combination of addressing this housing need by creating a neighborhood that complements the area and the hope my parents would eventually find their way to Georgia was the inspiration for creating East Haven,” he explains.

BACKYARDS AND BACK UP TO BEAUTIFUL AND PROTECTED WOODED AREAS PERFECT FOR FURRY FRIENDS OR VISITING GRANDCHILDREN.
Priced from the mid-$600s, East Haven is an intimate enclave of 28 townhomes (only 15 remain) with three acres of common area, including a dog park, private pool, cabana with an outdoor kitchen and firepit. East Haven’s luxury features and designs are unique and unlike typical townhomes in the area. The majority of the homesites feature large dedicated backyards and back up to beautiful and protected

wooded areas perfect for furry friends or visiting grandchildren. The exteriors are rich with detail and the elevations of each home are individually staggered to follow the natural topography of the community. By design, the interiors are spacious and grand, offering the flexibility of custom designs for media/game rooms, refreshment centers, as well as additional bedrooms with morning kitchens. Elevators are available in all homes.
A unique neighborhood surrounded by local amenities and services with unparalleled access to The Avenue East Cobb, the Chattahoochee River and two new medical campuses has proven to be a winning combination. East Haven has been extremely popular with local buyers looking to remain in the East Cobb area and to the out-of-state buyer looking to move closer to family. At East Haven, living a rich and active lifestyle doesn’t get any easier than this. Tour our decorated model or visit our website at www.EastHavenCobb.com. Paulina Brand M A K E U P A RT I S T • F O O D S T Y L I S T • AU T H O R By Cory Olesen
Paulina Brand has lived all over the world. Born in the Czech Republic, she moved to the States over 20 years ago but has also lived in Austria, Brazil and Malaysia. From this variety of living experiences, Paulina has picked up many memories and friends, as well as recipes, along the way. But it is East Cobb that she considers home, having lived here for the past 16 years while raising her two boys. “I’m an East Cobbler!” she teases. A makeup artist by trade, Paulina’s work dried up in March of last year when COVID-19 hit. “I had to do something for myself,” she says. “I also wanted to share a gift of inspiration and remind people how good it feels to share meals with loved ones, especially in times when we need human connection more than ever.” That gift became “The Bohemian Peach: A Taste of Home,” a collection of her recipes, stories, style tips and more.
I’M NOT LOOKING TO MAKE THE BEST SOUTHERN FOOD OR THE BEST ANYTHING; I’M JUST TRYING TO DO FEEL-GOOD FOOD. —PAULINA BRAND
In total, there are 85 recipes in the book, many of them recognizable dishes of comfort food, but each one comes with Paulina’s little spin on it. “These traditional recipes are already delicious, and people know that. They just don’t make them that often. So, I really want to inspire people to make these dishes and with that little twist give them something unexpected.” But the book doesn’t stop with recipes. There are plenty of other surprises inside, such as a section on growing your own herb garden, making unique treats like elderflower syrup, and even resourceful tips for styling events for friends and family. When not cooking in her own home, Paulina enjoys neighborhood spots like Seed and Lemongrass. You can purchase her book on her website. thebohemianpeach.com

Aside from the book’s drool-worthy photography, most of which Paulina took herself, the main inspiration behind “The Bohemian Peach” is to bring comfort and delicious food within arm’s reach. Paulina, who is a single mom of two boys, knows first-hand the struggle of balancing digital learning with working from home and months of cabin fever. “I’m not looking to make the best Southern food or the best anything; I’m just trying to do feel-good food,” she explains.

Home Q&A
Experts Provide Solutions For Your Everyday Q
SHOWER ENCLOSURES
Q A
What do you recommend if I have a shower leak?
It depends on where you see the leak. If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing]. If the water is spotting the ceiling below or appearing on the paint adjacent to your shower, then David Drexler the tile or pan may not be sealed properly. A tile professional or plumber may be required. A Drexler representative would be happy to help diagnose your leak.

WATERPROOFING
Q
How do I know which waterproofing product(s) I need?
A
Before rushing to purchase waterproofing products that are available at your local home improvement store or even on late-night infomercials, we always recommend having a professional waterproofing specialist evaluate your specific issue to fully explain the causes and explain the different options for repair. Some repairs can be as simple as Derek Ritchie sealing a crack, while others may require a drainage system on the outside or inside of your home.

Q A
When are do-it-yourself repairs not an option?
A garage door system operates under high tension and can be extremely dangerous. Simple maintenance such as lubrication of moving parts, programming remotes, and replacing batteries are safe for a homeowner to perform. However, all repairs, including replacing broken springs, faulty John Nale wiring and an off-track door, are dangerous and should be left to a trained professional.

We recommend variable speed furnaces with variable speed compressors. A variable speed heating system controls airflow to provide better temperature, humidity control and air distribution. Compared to a conventional single-speed furnace, a variable speed furnace uses about two-thirds less electricity. Furnaces with variable speed fans work well with other energy-efficient Bill Mashraky upgrades such as zoned heating controls and smart thermostats.

GUTTERS
Q
If my gutters are not free of debris, can my home be damaged?
A
Improperly channeled roof water that stems from clogged gutters (primarily leaves, pine needles, debris) is actually the leading cause of foundation and Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk waterproofing issues in homes. If not addressed, these issues can worsen over time, resulting in far more serious and expensive repairs.

SIDING
Q
What are common indicators that it’s time for new masonite, particle or wooden siding?
A
The most common indicators that it is time to replace your siding is swelling of your masonite particle siding (a mixture of wood fibers and other materials) and wet or dry rot on wood Charlie Dallavalle siding. This is caused by excessive humid conditions or exposure to liquids.

How do I know when my windows need to be replaced?
A
Though not always the same, there are some indicators it may be time to replace your windows. If you can feel Ted Kirk and Jonathan Collum air coming in around the exterior of your window frames, if the glass is fogged over, if they don’t operate correctly, or if there is wood rot—it’s time to consider replacing your windows. With no minimums, you can replace the worst windows first.

I don’t want to scratch my new floor!
Hard surface floors are beautiful and practical. But not indestructible. Wood, LVP, laminate – all can be scratched. You can take preventative measures by not wearing shoes (especially high heels) in your home, but the major culprit is the heavy furniture. Here’s how to avoid scratching your floor: • AVOID PUSHING AND DRAGGING FURNITURE Many furniture pieces are quite heavy and require extra help to move. Oftentimes, homeowners attempt to move the furniture themselves, not asking for assistance. This is when scratches occur! If the piece is light or small enough, lift it from the hardwood flooring instead. If it’s something heavier and larger, always ask for assistance. You might be eager to rearrange your furniture, but a little help can prevent scratching your floors and keep them protected. • ROLL OUT THE AREA RUGS Use a rug(s) as a barrier. Not only does it protect against gouges, but it adds warmth, extra style, and color to the space. It can even anchor and tie together a large and spacious seating area. Add even more protection with a rug pad beneath your rugs. Just be certain the rug pad backing is safe to use on your floor. Otherwise, you might find a yellowing discoloration or the pad itself might cause fine hairline scratches. • USE FURNITURE PADS Sometimes, you don’t want to use a rug. For instance, an area rug beneath a dining table is a great idea, but certain dining chair feet catch and make it difficult to slide to or from the table. Instead, when you need some movement, you could forgo the area rug and attach furniture pads to the feet. Felt pads perform exceptionally well when you need to shift and slide around furniture. PRO TIP: don’t buy furniture pads at the dollar store. They won’t stay on. We recommend Flexi-Felt, a very durable line of floor protectors available in different shades and sizes.
