What you need to know about the Best of 2022 contest winners

There was a time not so long ago that, as a media company owner, I refused to run Best of contests. I didn’t believe it was really fair to label any one business as the best because we have so many great ones in our community, and being the best varies depending on who you ask. But eventually, I changed my mind, and here is why. At the end of the day, I think these contests can provide valuable insight to readers and value to our local East Cobb businesses who choose to participate.

What you need to know about the Best of 2022 winners is this: They received the award because there are a lot of people who know them, trust them and believe they are the best at what they do. Those believers go online and vote daily to show their support for these local businesses, and those endorsements mean they have a loyal following. This says something. Does it mean these are the only businesses that provide excellent services and quality products in East Cobb? Of course not, but if you are looking, they should be on your list for consideration.

Our East Cobb community is full of stellar businesses that offer exceptional service and experiences; the key is finding the right ones for you. QHow should I clean fiber cement siding, and how often should I do it?

AI recommend cleaning fiber cement siding once a year or every other year . I would use a 50/50 solution of bleach and water or a solution of 90% water and 10% Simple Green® All-Purpose Cleaner. Soft wash the house. Don’t put a lot of pressure on it. Let the chemicals do the work. I also recommend using a soft bristle brush like you would use on your car to lightly clean the windows, then rinse them with a hose, so there’s no risk of blowing any seals.

Yoga instructor Karen Patton is thriving at the vibrant age of 51. A few years ago, she took a leap of faith to open her own yoga studio, Peach Out Power Yoga. Since then, she’s learned that following your passion has its risks, but it’s well worth the reward. In 2021, Karen was voted one of Best Self Atlanta’s Over 40 & Fabulous! Top 10, and more recently, her community impact was recognized by lululemon, who named her a 2023 brand ambassador. This yogi is just getting started!

QCan you tell us more about what it means to be a lululemon brand ambassador?

I’m honored and humbled to have been chosen as a local ambassador for the lululemon East Cobb store. As a regular yoga practitioner and instructor, I have worn and loved lululemon for many years, so it’s absolutely surreal to be featured on their wall as a partner and an extension of their national athletic brand. I will savor every moment of this journey and work hard to make a difference in my community.

QWhat’s the secret to aging gracefully?

In my opinion, aging gracefully means being comfortable with who you are and the way you look at any age, shape or size. I choose clothes that make me feel comfortable and con dent and are attering for my body type. lululemon offers me so many choices that make me feel good about myself and are age appropriate. Looking good is about being happy with yourself.

QHow has your perception of aging changed?

I would have never imagined starting a business and a new career at age 47, especially as a yoga instructor. And I would have never expected my photo to be on a wall as a brand ambassador for a national athletic company. I thank lululemon for the incredible opportunity they have given me. I am quite sure this isn’t it for me and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

What is your favorite way to give back to your community?

I love offering donation classes at my studio to support clients who have gone through something special in their lives. I know the members of my community will come out and support them, and it feels special that I’m making a difference in the life of someone that I’m actually connected to. I teach an annual fundraising class in honor of Jake Urowsky, a client and dear friend’s son who suffers from heart disease. This class always sells out, and people show up and donate generously out of love for this family. All the funds raised go to the American Heart Association. I also have three clients who are breast cancer survivors, and I teach an annual donation class to support them as well, with all of the raised funds going to Susan G.
