JUNE 2016

East Cobb is one of my favorite Atlanta neighborhoods. Many of my dearest, long-term friends live there, so I have spent quite a lot of time in East Cobb where our familiesAbs, often shared time together at Chin Sope Creek and Thighs, Double Indian Hills. We have meals together at their homes and favorite eateries, including Seed, Moxie Burger and Bagelicious (love the chicken salad!).

esli Schwartz felt like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz when she moved back to East Cobb in 2013 after living abroad for three years with her husband, Randy. During that time, the couple resided in Gothenburg, Sweden, to allow Randy to accept a temporary position with his company, a Swedish-based medical firm. And even though they traveled around Europe having exciting adventures, Lesli was ready to be stateside again. “There’s no place like home,” Lesli says. “We have so many great friends in East Cobb. Our kids grew up here. We love our neighborhood, and this is just a lovely place to live and raise a family.”

Upon returning to Marietta, Lesli brought with her more than a suitcase full of wonderful memories. She had, in fact, developed a new passion during her European excursion: Asian cuisine. Yes— Asian cuisine. How does someone develop a love for Asian food while residing in a Scandinavian nation? Serendipity.

18 MYEC_016-023_Profiles.indd 18

“While I was in Sweden, I met Damien Aw. He’s from Singapore, and he’s an amazing cook,” she says of Damien, whose partner, Cheng Wei, works with Randy. “We began to cook together. We shopped together. We threw dinner parties together. It was so fun for me. I love the flavor profiles of Asian food, and I became enamored with cooking it. It became a real passion for me.” When it was time to head home to the U.S., Schwartz had a plan. She wanted to start a food blog. Although she had a professional

MY GOAL

8/30/16 1:56 PM

This past February, Schwartz launched AsianCaucasian.com, an Asianinspired food blog that shares simple, healthy Asian recipes that can be prepared at home. Recipes include traditional Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese dishes, as well as “westernized” dishes with an Asian twist. Damien serves as a consultant on the project, cooking with Lesli as she develops recipes. Her goal is to show home chefs that Asian cooking doesn’t have to be intimidating and also can be good for you, unlike some of today’s standard takeout cuisine. “My goal is to make it healthy, easy and very flavorful,” she reveals. From substituting cauliflower rice for regular rice to shying away from frying, she makes Asian cuisine both wholesome and uncomplicated. And soon, she hopes to add in-home cooking parties and demos to her repertoire, as well as cooking videos to her blog, which was developed by East Cobb web designer Lisa Tiger of The Tiger Eyes Web Design. When she’s not at home chopping vegetables with her Wheaten Terrier, Winston, at her feet or sharing recipe ideas with her children, Brad, 27, and Kimberly, 24, Schwartz can be found shopping at the local Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and other grocers, as well as farmers’ markets, looking for unique produce, exotic spices and staple ingredients—often with Aw. A bona fide foodie, she also enjoys partaking of East Cobb’s burgeoning restaurant scene, with spots like Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar, Stem Wine Bar and Hong Kong Star at the top of her go-to list. In the past few years, Schwartz has learned that East Cobb is not only a great place to live, but also to work from home. “My kitchen is my office. I’m passionate about cooking, and the fact that I can do this out of my house is just wonderful,” she concludes. “I want people to enjoy Asian food and cooking as much as we do. Being able to share this with others is the icing on the cake.”

Coconut milk is perfect for sauces and dishes like coconut rice. And don’t be afraid to use the light version—it tastes the same, but cuts the calorie count way down.

2

Red curry paste is a staple in Thai cooking. It offers a deliciously spicy kick to any dish.

3

Soy sauce, of course, is one of the most well-known condiments in Asian cooking. Fortunately for those who have a gluten sensitivity or allergy, there are gluten-free options at most grocery stores.

4

Sambal Oelek is a spicy Southeast Asian chili sauce (or paste) made from hot red chili peppers. You can find it at your local grocery store (even Target!), and you don’t need a lot to make a big impact.

5

Fish sauce is something used on a more occasional basis, but this liquid condiment can bring special flavor to a variety of dishes, from dipping sauces to soups and casseroles.

rawing has long been a creative outlet for East Side Elementary School teacher Danny Carlson.

“I remember drawing a lot as a kid,” Danny explains, “it sort of became my identity. I became the ‘art guy.’ I worked primarily in pen and ink—sketching comic book art and cartooning, dabbling a little bit in realism.” Then, when Danny graduated from high school in the small town of Wheatland, California, he wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do with life. However, he was certain he was ready to broaden his horizons. His older brother worked in the Atlanta area, so Danny headed here, enrolling at Kennesaw State.

During college, he took on freelance assignments for extra money. The more Danny focused on projects for other people, the more his 20-something self became determined “NOT to grow up to be an artist!” he admits. On the suggestion of a friend, he applied for a part-time job teaching in the After School Program (ASP) at a Cobb County elementary school. He loved it and soon switched into that course of study. Danny’s realized, “I love learning things. I don’t teach because I love teaching as much as because I love learning!” In 2006, Danny joined the faculty of East Side Elementary School and “Mr. C” has been a beloved teacher ever since. He’s taught third, fourth and fifth grades and this year takes over the school’s science lab program. Danny has always shared

his artistic talents with students, adding cartoon illustrations to his lessons. A few years ago, when teachers wanted to add painted benches and bookcases to their classrooms, Danny volunteered to help, heading into his workshop first to build custom pieces and then to paint them with incredible characters. Soon, the genie was out of the bottle as Danny’s artistic magic began to swirl around various parts of the school. Danny offered cartooning classes after school and the demand was high. Those classes led to summer artcamp sessions, more custom commissions and the satisfaction of merging his artistic talent with his teaching career. “At East Side,” Danny praises, “the entire staff is a source of growth for me—my support group and cheering section. I take insight from everyone I meet.” When not in the classroom or studio, Danny, his wife, Kit, and their two children enjoy the community spirit of East Cobb. His favorite spot to eat is Paradise Grille and he spends much of his time in the Merchant’s Walk area, where he always runs into students. They, of course, give “Mr. C” the rock-star treatment. And, he keeps giving them hours of inspiration that will last far longer than any of us can imagine.

1

My fifth-grade teacher, Jeannie Sanders, went out of her way to reach me and really drove me to develop my creativity. We crossed paths again when I was a high-school senior. I told her I was going into art and she told me she thought I should consider being a teacher. I remember laughing. Three years later, I wrote her a letter to tell her that I had just changed my major to education!

2

Diane Boswell, with whom I taught at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy (also in East Cobb), was a huge part of my development as a teacher. When I left after five years teaching with her it was like I had to tear a bit of myself off and leave it behind. It was very difficult for me.

3

Artistically, I have always been a fan of Walt Disney, even before ever setting foot in a theme park. His whole story fascinates me. He wasn’t just an artist—he was an innovator and a visionary.

David Melton Y O G A I N S T R U C T O R • A RT I S T • D A D

Artist and yoga instructor David Melton moved from New York to East Cobb in 2003, when his wife, Tricia, took a job with Turner Broadcasting and friends recommended the area to them. For the last 13 years, Melton’s been developing his artistry while enjoying time as a stayat-home dad to three kids. David teaches at Empower Yoga, just celebrating its second anniversary as a studio.

Q

When did you first begin practicing yoga?

Q

How did you develop your artistic process?

I have a master’s of fine arts in ceramics and have taught that along with drawing and art history. A few years ago, I saw an image of something made by an artist out of wine corks, commissioned for Courteney Cox’s show Cougar Town. So I started collecting corks everywhere I went. Though it’s not as sensual as working with clay, I’m not covered in mud everyday! My latest piece is a rendering of Bill Murray, which took almost three months to complete. I build the frame and shoot thousands of nails from the reverse side. Then, finally, I “hammer” the corks onto the nails. The piece is six feet by four feet with approximately 4,300 corks.

MYEC_016-023_Profiles.indd 23

Q

When you’re not in the studio, where can we find you around town?

We have three kids, so I’m often found at Whole Foods, various doctors’ offices and the orthodontist. I also visit Tommy Cho’s karate studio, where my youngest child, a freshman at Walton, will soon receive his black belt. I take my dogs hiking at Gold Branch or off Columns Drive. My favorite restaurants include Moxie Burger, Marlow’s Tavern and Sakura.

I took my first yoga class in Brooklyn shortly after 9/11. Years of horrendous posture and working as a ceramist took its toll on my back. I went once a week, then twice a week. I was hooked! In 2010, I did my first training certification and took over the class I had been attending as a student. Recently, I completed training in the Baptiste Method. In the studio, we practice accepting our body’s limits, not comparing ourselves to the person on the mat beside us. All relationships are between two imperfect people. When we can accept that, it goes a long way to make peace with ourselves and with our community.
