Looking for a Pet-Friendly Floor? Are you one of the 65 percent of families in America with a pet? And maybe you’ve been told hardwood floors aren’t the best choice for those of us with pets. There are some types of wood floors better suited for pets. They aren’t indestructible, but they are certainly more practical than others. Look for these dog-friendly flooring types: • Wire Brushed. These wood floors are distressed by a machine to remove the sapwood (soft wood) and enhance the wood grain, adding texture and character. Its weathered, elegant, antique look hides scratches particularly well due to its matte finish. • Character Grade. This flooring keeps the wood’s natural appearance and displays its full characteristics. Color variations and knots occurring naturally show clearly. This visually less “perfect” wood hides damage well. • Distressed Hardwood Flooring. This wood is intentionally scratched and scraped to create an antique look. Planks’ edges can be darkened, wire brushed and sculpted, resulting in lots of texture and character. You won’t know if a dent in your floor was one that you paid for or one your dog made! Scratches can be easily hidden using a touch-up pen. • Low-Gloss, Satin or Matte Finishes. These sheen levels help hide normal wear and tear and show footprints less. The glossier and darker you go, the more light reflects off the floor—showing more dirt, dust and imperfections—not what you want with pets.
EXPERIENCE YOU CAN TRUST Enhance Floors & More Design Consultants offer years of realworld experience and product knowledge not often found in large national chain stores. We know that your home is one of your largest investments and you don’t want to make expensive mistakes. We want to help you make the right decisions for your home. Don’t trust your project to a company that you have never heard of and cannot research. Our strong reputation for quality and customer service gives you peace of mind. We are your total home design center! Visit our Marietta Showroom and make your dream home a reality. • Beautiful Showroom Filled with Samples to See, Touch and Feel • Featuring Dozens of Different Installed Flooring Products • Full-Sized Kitchen, Bath and Staircase Displays • Winner 2016 Best Place to Shop for Flooring • Locally Owned and Operated
• Sliced Cut Engineered. Engineered hardwoods are manufactured with a top veneer of real hardwood. Look for a top veneer at least 3mm thick, as you can sand and refinish it at least twice. • Aluminum Oxide. This chemical is used to finish flooring because of its strength. It serves as the protective coating on most prefinished hardwood floors. • Acrylic-Infused/Impregnated. Acrylic resins and stain are injected into the veneer so the boards are much more crush-resistant than untreated wood. Most acrylic-infused products have commercial warranties. Because stain is injected in the actual wood fiber, the color is more permanent, greatly minimizing visible scratches.
Elisabeth Stubbs Co-owner
• Oil-Rubbed Finish. This very low-gloss finish uses oil instead of polyurethane or wax and tends to make wood look vintage. Oil penetrates and becomes part of the wood, so it isn’t nearly as sensitive to scratches or wear as a urethane finish. It’s easy to maintain (DIY) and, if done properly, will prevent a floor from ever needing sanding. Expect these floors to be on the upper end of the price scale.

To say that these two women are close is a bit of an understatement. “We’ve known each other for 16 years. We went to church together, played tennis together, changed each other’s kids’ diapers and even vacationed together with our husbands and kids,” Kirsten explains. The CycleBar business is the next logical extension of that friendship—Lee is a former certified public accountant and software consultant, and Kirsten has extensive fitness-studio management experience. “The kids are older now, so it made sense to look for a business opportunity

You feel so much better
when you’ve had a good sweat. —LEE OESTERLING
The pair decided to bring a CycleBar studio to their hometown and opened their doors in March with future plans to open locations in Vinings and Midtown. The East Cobb facility houses 48 state-of-theart Schwinn Carbon Blue bikes and features a sound system that’s sure to keep the room pumping with energy. “I just turned 52 and I’m a breast cancer and leukemia survivor, so my health is really on my mind. I’m convinced that the more active you are now, the better you’ll be when you get older,” Lee says. “I truly believe most of the population wouldn’t need antidepressants if people would just exercise. You feel so much better when you’ve had a good sweat,” she explains. “I’m really looking forward to this. I can’t wait to put smiles on people’s faces and start their day off right.”

Kirsten says she looks forward to helping people overcome obstacles and changing their perception of exercise. “It changes your life when you make it a lifestyle and not something you have to do. Bringing that change to people is a big goal for me.” To take advantage of the new CycleBar experience, users can go online to select and reserve the bike they want in the class that interests them most and then select their shoe size. “We provide the shoes—when you clip into the pedal with our shoes, you use more of your hamstrings than if you are in shoes that slide into a normal bike pedal cage. And our bikes have a full display so you can see your revolutions per minute and heart rate, among other things. The music playlist will be different in every class. We want to rock your ride,” Kirsten says. “Nitty-gritty music that people love—it’s the biggest motivator. We will have fun rides such as Beyoncé versus Lady Gaga, themed rock ’n’ roll rides, a ’70s disco ride or a Broadway musical Hamilton ride. When you leave the class, you get an email with your stats and a link to the playlist so you can download it if you want.” “We feel deeply embedded in the community,” Lee adds. “My family is at The Avenue every weekend, and we’re always eating at Seed Kitchen & Bar or Marlow’s Tavern or shopping at Lizard Thicket boutique and Straw Dog. When we’re not cycling, we love Empower Yoga right down the street from us. East Cobb is a great place for our families and our new business.” EastCobb.CycleBar.com

With energizing rides tailored to all fitness and experience levels, the low-impact, high-intensity nature of a CycleBar ride has a multitude of health benefits.

Reasons to Ride
1
BURN, BABY, BURN! Along with burning calories and building endurance, their Premium Indoor Cycling™ classes also deliver cardiovascular benefits that can aid weight reduction, help to reduce blood pressure and improve diabetes control, increase overall strength and bolster active recovery. With little impact on your joints, indoor cycling provides an excellent cardio alternative for individuals who have knee, hip or muscular limitations.
2
STAY ARMED They equip each bike with fourand six-pound body bars to use in pre-planned arm-movement sets during the ride. In addition to working your leg muscles as you ride, you’ll work your biceps, triceps, shoulders, lats and core.
3
LOSE THE JUDGMENT They offer an experience where you can completely immerse yourself in the music, let go and, in their words, “rock your ride.” CycleBar is for every fitness level and age—no judgment.

Q
Why did you start your remodeling business, Atlanta Design & Build, in East Cobb?
We moved out here from North Carolina 29 years ago, and we chose East Cobb almost by accident. We lucked out with the fantastic neighborhood, great schools and good shopping areas.
Q
The concept of universal home design (accommodating aging or disabled people) is growing in popularity. How do you incorporate this idea into your projects?
Many houses have two stories here, with bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. If you want to stay in your home—“age in place”—you need single-level living with a master suite downstairs. Then you can keep upstairs bedrooms for guests or grandkids. We widen doorways, retrofit elevators in homes and, in bathrooms, add taller toilets and curbless showers with benches. We customize closets so they’re more reachable. We recently filled in a sunken living-room floor for a client. We move laundry rooms and mudrooms closer to the master suite.
Q
What factors should a homeowner consider when deciding whether to remodel?
When you bought the house, you probably bought someone else’s tastes and design choices. When you remodel, make it yours with individual touches and design criteria. I’m chairman of the board of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and I’m passionate about promoting our group of good remodeling companies with tight standards.
You have a large vegetable garden. Any tips regarding a garden remodel for East Cobb homeowners?
It’s all about the soil. I repurposed old lumber to make raised planter boxes instead of trying to amend the clay soil. I purchased good dirt and compost and got horse manure from a horse farm. With this healthy soil, I’m growing four-pound sweet potatoes and zucchinis that are 24 inches long!
Q
What are your favorite spots in East Cobb?
Aspens Signature Steaks or Cazadores, a little neighborhood restaurant with great margaritas. Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar, of course, and AJ’s Famous Seafood and PoBoys has fantastic Cajun food. My wife, Keely, is a Trader Joe’s disciple! After watching our neighborhood swim or tennis teams with our daughters, we go to LA Fitness for a workout. AtlantaDesignBuild.com

Rob Carver TENNIS ICON • MENTOR • DAD By Stacy Moser
One of East Cobb’s most popular tennis instructors, Rob Carver, narrowly avoided a career in the corporate world—a place where he was headed right out of college. “I landed an entry-level job in finance,” he explains, “and I was struggling to make money. So I took a week off at one point and drove to Marietta to work at a tennis camp to earn some extra money. Some kids at the camp asked if I could coach them on weekends and I said, ‘Sure!’ Soon, I spent all my free time teaching. My parents were supportive and told me, ‘Hey, maybe this corporate thing isn’t for you; maybe you should be teaching.” It didn’t take much to persuade Rob to take a chance on building a business, Rob Carver Tennis, Inc. He moved to Marietta and, within five months, “I was able to tell the corporate world, ‘See ya!’” he chuckles.

East Cobb was the perfect place to build a career as an instructor. “Everyone is so active here. Wherever you look, there’s a biker or a runner. I love it because, even if tennis isn’t a No. 1 priority for some of them, my clients want to be active and they have fun with it.” And he’s busy raising his own kids, Ella, 15, and Dean, 11, with his wife, Heather. “I love doing anything sports-related with them,” he says. He’s also been involved with the Special Olympics. “That is just about the most rewarding way to give back,” he says. “They appreciate it so much.” In his spare time, Rob likes to go to D-BAT for batting practice or take his family to Aurelio’s for pizza. “And I love that the Braves stadium is going to be down the street,” he smiles. “We’re a lucky community here.” Facebook.com/Rob.CarverTennis
