hile February brings to mind promises of devotion, boxes of chocolate, pink hearts and prancing unicorns for most, Patrick and Madelyn Gahan, residents of East Cobb, have a special reason to be thankful for Valentine’s Day. Their foundation, Enduring Hearts, brings much-needed hope and funds to families with pediatric heart issues.

A family vacation about five years ago forever changed the lives of the Gahan family. After selling his cyber security firm, Patrick relocated to the East Cobb area with his wife, Madelyn, and their two children, Anya and Mya. They had moved here to be closer to Madelyn’s sister and her two daughters. Shortly after the move, the Gahans celebrated the move and their new life on a trip to Walt Disney World. But Mya, the youngest, became ill.

Family time is especially important to Patrick and Madelyn, who find that the health challenges their daughter Mya faces serve as a reminder to cherish the little things in life. A children’s game on the floor of the hospital room brings some normalcy to their lives.
The reason was terrifying. “They took an X-ray of her chest and saw that her heart was the size of a nine-year-old’s at 18 months,” Patrick recalls. While doctors sedated Mya for a week to calm her heart down, they explained to her parents that she had a rare condition, dilated cardiomyopathy. They weren’t sure she would make it. And though she did, the Gahans’ ordeal was far from over. Mya became severely ill again by age three and it was determined that only a heart transplant could treat her. Her anticipated 12-week stay at Children’s Healthcare at Egleston turned into six months. But Mya’s new heart wasn’t all the Gahans had hoped. “What you find out, going through that process, is that a heart transplant is not a cure [for this],” Patrick explains. “Eventually your body will reject that transplant organ and you will need another one and then it will reject that organ and you will need another one after that.” Since the body can only withstand so many transplants, reaching middle age could be a challenge for Mya. That harsh discovery sparked the couple to establish the nonprofit Enduring Hearts in 2013. The foundation’s mission is to work to end the need for repeated pediatric heart transplants. “The reason we decided to start Enduring Hearts,” says Patrick, “is because we looked out there to see what was being done and there wasn’t a lot of focused research.” Through alliances with the American Heart Association and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Enduring Hearts has been the catalyst for over $2 million of research. Even with Mya’s persisting challenges, the Gahans count their blessings. “It seems like everyone else had so many other problems to go along with their child’s heart transplant,” says Patrick. “You almost feel guilty that you have it so good.”

to Help Enduring Hearts
The foundation can’t do it alone, so your assistance to end the need for repeated pediatric heart transplants is more than welcome. Since Enduring Hearts does not have paid executives or a staff, 92.4 percent of donations go directly toward research. Here are three ways you can help Enduring Hearts in its mission:
1
The Enduring Hearts Bourbon Gala Sample the bourbon life and save some hearts at Buckhead’s trendy Stave Room and American Spirit Whiskey Distillery. March 30, 7–11pm. Last year’s was a blast and this year’s is sure to be, too! 199 Armour Dr. NE. EnduringHearts.org/Product/Bourbon
2
Georgia Gives Day
Every November, the State of Georgia shines a spotlight on its nonprofits through Georgia Gives Day. Last year, Enduring Hearts raised $400,000 primarily through corporate matching. So this year, why not help them reach $500,000?

Kim Vaughn IMA E COACH • MENTOR • S O ES ERSON By Carey Sipp
For Kimberly Vaughn, envisioning her own personal best means helping others achieve their personal best. As a professional model and an image and pageant consultant—and beauty pageant winner herself—Kim’s greatest joy is to coach women and girls so they gain self-confidence and poise. Her expertise, enriched by a warmth that puts even the most nervous young lady at ease, helps clients develop a stage presence as well as other skills necessary to succeed in pageants and modeling. While Kim walks through life with an inherent amount of pain due to an inflammatory disorder she has battled for some 28 years, she is always excited to help her next client learn the important art of walking with confidence. Helping others takes the focus off living with Sjögren’s syndrome, also called “the desert disease” because it affects one’s ability to create moisture in the eyes and mouth.

WINTER 2017
“I recently helped coordinate a fashion-show fundraiser for McFarlane Park, a private nature park in East Cobb, and secured Miss Georgia and Miss Cobb as models. And as a former teacher myself, I do all I can to support East Cobb schools,” she says. Her newest venture, “It’s Greek to Me,” a workshop that assists girls during sorority rush in college, helps take the mystery out of recruitment. “We show how it affects their lives—beyond college. They learn how sororities help them find friendships, opportunities for service work and the possibilities they offer after graduation,” says Kim, as she prepares to help the next group of young women discover, and express, more of their own inner beauty.

By Carey Sipp
Dorsey Alston realtor Matt Bass sat transfixed in his East Cobb living room a few years ago, watching the film “Forks Over Knives.” The documentary claims that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict humans can be controlled, or even reversed, by abstaining from eating animal-based and processed foods. The film resonated with Matt—he’d known something in his life needed to change. But little did he know how much dropping the knife—as in not needing it to cut meat anymore—would change his life, his health . . . and his front yard. That was four years, 67 pounds, many miles logged running and thousands of plant-based meals ago. Matt has even transformed his front yard into a large garden, cultivating many of his own vegetables on “The Bass Family Farm.” “The neighbors didn’t mind our taking up the better part of our front yard with the garden,” he chuckles. “Especially when we started sharing vegetables with them.”
[
Dropping the knife changed his life, his health ... and his front yard.
[
Matt is proud that his two sons have watched him and his wife, Elyssa, a jewelry designer, embrace a healthier lifestyle. “The boys can have other foods when we eat out or are at friends’ homes. And Elyssa and I will eat fish occasionally. But other than that, we stick with plant-based meals.” “I do most of the prep, which is great for the boys (12 and 14) to be involved in. They’re learning about nutrition and helping in the garden. When we do eat out, we go to the Mediterranean Grill, Chipotle and Peace, Love and Pizza here in East Cobb,” he adds. Looking ahead to 2017 and his health goals, Matt plans to continue running and will add to his garden. While the effort to grow real-estate markets is understandably more complicated than harvesting bumper crops from a home vegetable garden, there’s little doubt Matt Bass has the vision, energy and discipline to flourish out in the field—whether it be with crops or properties.
