A homeowner favorite, designers have been selecting the eye-catching Sputnik Pendant from Capital Lighting Fixture Co., available at the CR Home Lighting showroom in Decatur. The aged metal accent, which can fit in with an array of color palettes, is a crowd pleaser. When it was time for an engaged couple to update their living room’s boring beige tiles around the fireplace, they turned to the Intown-based team at Balance Design Atlanta. Using large-scale chocolate brown tiles and a custom wood mantle, the designers created a beautiful focal point. “Everything else in the space is light, so we wanted to pull the viewer’s eye to the drama of a contrasting wall,” says Stephanie Andrews, founder of Balance Design Atlanta. 1653 McLendon Ave. NE. balancedesignatlanta.com With help from Trinity Mercantile & Design Co., you can add a touch of whimsy to your space with wallpaper. Jamie Hemphill (Wasted Potential Brass Band) PA RT Y S TA RT E R • B A N D M E M B E R • T R O M B O N I S T By Barbra Buoy

For the last 10 years, Wasted Potential Brass Band (WPBB) has been entertaining Atlantans with their special brand of New Orleans-style street band music. The group recently released their first full-length album, “Ruining the Surprise Party.” We talked to trombonist Jamie Hemphill to find out what makes the ensemble tick.

Jamie Hemphill: We started as a street band in Oakhurst near Decatur. After about three years of playing at local bars, we got a tuba from a pawnshop. We added a female vocalist and then one of the guys started rapping. We decided we were going to be the best party band we could possibly be.

(BACK ROW, L TO R): EDGAR CLARK JR., DARIUS PREVOST, MICO BOWLES, JOHN HARDIN, MATT WEISS; (FRONT ROW, L TO R): JESSE VOGEL, JAMIE HEMPHILL, MANDI STRACHOTA, CHRIS KEARNEY

Q

What makes you guys so cool?

Q

What was your favorite performance?

Q

What are your favorite spots around Intown?

JH: People question whether we even practice because it looks like we’re just having fun. But we take it so seriously and get together every week. I’m on stage with a group of friends and I know if I drop the ball, someone is going to pick it up.

JH: Last year we played the Peachtree Road Race. That was fun. I’ve never stood on a stage and watched 60,000 people run at me. It was mesmerizing and scary all at the same time.

JH: If we’re going for an on-brand message, I guess our favorite shopping would be buying from the local package stores. But seriously, Euclid Avenue Yacht Club and Cypress Street Pint & Plate are two of my favorite restaurants. wpbb-atl.com

Erin Bernhardt IN D E P E ND E NT F I L M M A KE R • A CTI V I S T • M O M By Barbra Buoy

At just 34, Erin Bernhardt has built an impressive list of accolades that belies her age: two Peabody Awards, an Emmy, and multiple film festival honors. She’s a sixth generation Georgian who grew up in Atlanta and worked for the Points of Light foundation and CNN. After the traumatic death of a peaceful protester at the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, she decided to return to her independent filmmaking roots. Her latest documentary, “CLARKSTON” (working title), follows the intersecting lives of three refugees and a former Klansman.

Q

Why did you decide to make “CLARKSTON” and what impact do you hope it will have?

Erin Bernhardt: My mom raised me and my brother to always look for ways to help people, so when Charlottesville happened (which was my college town), I felt compelled to do something. The violence happened over the weekend and the following Monday I went in and quit my job so I could make a film in reaction to it. Over half the population of Clarkston, Georgia is foreign born. It’s known as the most diverse square mile in America. I want the film to have a really positive impact in our country and in our world. Our amazingly diverse team and I hope it will be a platform to advocate for human rights for refugees, combat ideologies of hatred, and promote interfaith, interethnic, and intercultural dialogue and communication.

Q

You also became a new mother while working on this film. What was it like having your first child?

MARCH – MAY 2020

EB: I had pretty severe postpartum depression while working on “CLARKSTON” after Boyd was born. I know it’s all hormonal and chemical, but it made me feel a lot of shame. There were 11 weeks that were really horrible, but it lasted four or five months total. Not enough people talk about postpartum depression, so I’ve been very open about my experience. I just don’t want any other woman to ever feel alone in having it.

Q

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

EB: Working out has been the best thing I could do for my mental health. My favorite Pilates place is The Daily in Inman Park. For yoga, I like YogaWorks in Old Fourth Ward. I also love shopping at Urban Cottage in Virginia-Highland. They have stuff for everybody. You can find something for your husband, your mother-in-law, your best friend, and her baby. clarkstonfilm.com/film

Richard Perano A RT I ST • STOCKB ROKER • BO O T CA M P WA RRI O R By Barbra Buoy

Richard Perano is living a double life. Stockbroker by day. Artist by night. Though not a Georgia native, he fell in love with Atlanta after visiting in the early ’90s and has now lived here for 26 years. Until recently, his art has been clean black-and-white pieces that he sells at local festivals and via his Facebook and Instagram pages. He talked to My Intown about his art history, his new colored drawings and what he does for fun.

Q

Can you tell us about your background as an artist?

Q

Where did you get the inspiration for your first colored piece, “The Sea Shepherdess?”

Q

What do you like to do when you’re not working or creating art?

RP: I recently started working with colored pencils. I ran across a story about a woman named Pia Klemp, a sea captain and biologist. Three or four years ago in the Mediterranean, she came across boats filled with immigrants who were drowning. She started rescuing hundreds of them. Now, she’s awaiting trial in Italy. If she’s convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 20 years. I was so impressed with her that I made the portrait to honor her.

RP: Since 2011, I’ve been attending Operation Boot Camp from 6 to 7am, 18 days a month. My running group meets at San Francisco Coffee Roasting Company every Saturday. For dinner, I love Wisteria Restaurant and Apres Diem Midtown. instagram.com/richard.perano, facebook.com/mastdraughtsman

Richard Perano: When I was a kid, I drew a lot. I stopped when I was 12 and never picked it up again. The only thing I can blame that on is puberty. I was talking to my daughter’s art teacher one day and she told me that if I started again now, I’d pick up exactly where I left off. That sounded so freaky and twilight zone-ish that I had to check it out. I was 54 at the time, now I’m 67. I started drawing again and quickly got into it very heavily. When I draw, I forget about time. I can do it for two or three hours and think it’s only been 15 or 20 minutes.

GARAGE DOORS

Q

When are do-it-yourself repairs not an option?

A

A garage door system operates under high tension, and can be extremely dangerous. Unless you are performing basic lubrication of moving parts, programming remotes or replacing batteries, any repairs needed to a garage door should be left to a trained professional. John Nale

Q

How often do I need to clean out my gutters?

A

Most homeowners clean their gutters one to four times per year. We recommend cleaning typical gutter systems twice a year. The most important Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk times of the year to clean your gutters are spring and fall, as leaves and debris pile up most during these seasons due to thunderstorms in the spring or foliage in the fall.

ROOFING

WINDOW REPLACEMENT

Q

What roof upkeep should I be aware of for the winter and what is one thing I can do for all seasons?

It is important to inspect your flashing. Flashing is an extra-protective part of your roof designed to direct water to run off the slope of the roof. In all seasons, we suggest keeping your Chad Cruce gutters clear so that your gutters do not clog up with debris. The added debris can lead to standing water, which can cause damage to your fascia, soffit, and siding.

SIDING

Q

What can I do to avoid warping or buckling?

A

First things first. It is invaluable that siding is installed to the direct specifications provided by the manufacturer. Also, ensure the structural support that your home’s siding is Charlie Dallavalle nailed to is perfectly vertical. Regular maintenance is also a must. Keep your wooden siding painted and sealed to avoid exposure and deterioration.

FLOORING INSTALLATION

Q

How do I know which waterproofing product(s) I need?

A

Before rushing to purchase waterproofing products that are available at your local home improvement store or even on late-night infomercials, we always recommend having a professional waterproofing specialist evaluate your specific issue to fully explain the causes and explain the different options for repair. Some repairs can be as simple as Derek Ritchie sealing a crack, while others may require a drainage system on the outside or inside of your home.

SHOWER ENCLOSURES

Q

I’m going back and forth on what type of flooring I want in my house. What are three things I need to know in order to make a decision?

Consider your lifestyle and maintenance needs. Some floors require far more upkeep than others. Think about how long you will be in your home and choose a floor that will still look Elisabeth Stubbs nice when you put your home on the market. Realistic budgets are also a must. Choose as nice a flooring as your budget will allow as it will perform better and last longer than bargain flooring.

It depends on where you see the leak. If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing]. If the water is spotting the ceiling below or appearing on the paint adjacent to your shower, then the David Drexler tile or pan may not be sealed properly. A tile professional or plumber may be required. A Drexler representative would be happy to help diagnose your leak.

Q

Do cracks in my concrete always mean foundation issues?

A

No, it is possible the cracks are superficial but do not self-evaluate your situation. It’s preferable to have a professional assess your problem to pinpoint your specific Michael Cangemi solution. Most good contractors will provide an evaluation and free estimate.

Q

What is the most common mistake people make with their window treatments?

A

The most common mistake that people make is not purchasing their window treatments through a Andrea and Sean Zare reputable and knowledgeable dealer.
