From the Editor Help with math project? Check. Get the kids to rehearsal on time? Check. Review homework? Check. With school underway, there are basic tasks that need to be completed. And as the parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure that everything gets done. But sometimes, things fall through the cracks and you just can’t possibly do it all. That’s when standout teachers from our neighborhood schools like the five we’re featuring in this issue come into play. We asked and you answered. And thanks

My high school yearbook adviser, Ms. McQuade, not only helped me perfect the art of writing captions but she also spent quality time getting to know me as well. Sometimes the small moments in life have the most dramatic impact. Jocelyn Gragg recalls the moment when she hit a fork in the road at the start of culinary school. “The first two classes for the culinary degree were Meat Identification and Fabrication and Seafood Identification and Fabrication—essentially breaking down cows and cutting up massive fish. Or I could choose the baking degree,” she laughs. “For me, it was a no-brainer.” And now, as the owner of the decadent JARDÍ chocolates, she’s sure she made the right decision. Jocelyn graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in New York, becoming a pastry chef and making extraordinary desserts in some of the best restaurants in the South. But her transformation to a chocolate wunderkind started when she would come in before her shifts at The Ocean Room inside The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island in South Carolina. “My manager was their chocolatier. She let me hang out with her in the chocolate room,” she remembers. “I realized then that this was my passion. Making chocolate gave me a crazy, emotional rush. I get chills just thinking about it.”
[

MY PASSION. MAKING CHOCOLATE GAVE ME A RUSH . I GET CHILLS THINKING ABOUT IT.
[
Jocelyn has made a habit of pursuing unlikely interests—she learned to scuba dive and received her certification when she was just 11 years old. And she and Jacob are parents to two rescued rabbits named Deli and Fernet Branca (the couple volunteer and raise funds for the Georgia House Rabbit Society). Plus, they have two dogs, a rescue mutt named Margaux, and Hermie, a 7-month-old corgi, which also bring life to their Ormewood Park home. When she takes a rare day away from JARDÍ chocolates, she and Jacob stop in at The Porter Beer Bar in Little Five Points. “They have a pull-apart pretzel that’s one of the greatest things on the planet.” Other favorite Intown spots are inside Ponce City Market. “I always find really cute gift ideas at Sugarboo & Co. and Posman Books has a great selection of cookbooks.” JardiChocolates.com

On their honeymoon in Northern Spain in 2015, she and her husband, Jacob, a sommelier, decided to make a go of that passion by selling her sumptuous chocolates in a shop in Atlanta. Inspired by the country’s natural beauty and fabulous food, they decided to name the shop JARDÍ, the Catalan word for “garden.” Popular individual flavors include the Limelight truffle, which tastes just like Key lime pie. But Bar #1 hits the sweet spot. “It’s a dark chocolate shell filled with strawberry caramel [made with local strawberries], a maple-caramel almond butter, and milk chocolate Gianduja,” says Jocelyn. “It’s pretty fantastic and people go nuts over it.”

Debbie and Richard Goldsmith MENTORS • RUNNERS • VISIONARIES By Stacy Moser
“I figured it was two hours a week—how hard could it be?” Richard Goldsmith laughs when he tells of his first involvement with the student-mentoring Discovery Program he created 27 years ago. “A friend of mine started the Hands On Atlanta volunteer program at that time and I wanted to help out somehow. We contacted Fulton County Schools and they matched us with Parklane Elementary, which had no homeworkassistance partner.” Little did he know, his involvement with the kids and volunteers at Parklane and other schools—the program was at 10 elementary schools in metro Atlanta last school year and it has been replicated across the country—would become a lifelong source of satisfaction.
“Our goal is to run a classic bait-and-switch strategy,” he says. “We ask volunteers—who I credit the success of the program to along with many others—to commit to help just one time. If we can make it really enjoyable, they’ll be hooked and keep coming back.” That strategy also worked when he met his future wife, Debbie, a senior project manager at CNN. “When I volunteered at Parklane, Richard and I went shopping for supplies and enjoyed being together. I didn’t know I was going to volunteer with him for the rest of my life, but I love it.” “There are some kids we refer to as ‘royalty,’” Debbie explains. “They began in the pre-K program and go through high school, then come back to tutor the littler ones.” Richard says he often wonders who gets the most out of the experience—the students or the mentors. “We’ve had a number of marriages as a result of people meeting here,” he says. “It’s a good group.” When the two are done cracking the books with the kids, they love going for a run in Morningside. “We enjoy Alon’s Bakery and La Tavola Trattoria when we’re in the mood to get out,” Debbie says. “Intown is like a wonderful little town in a big city.” HandsOnAtlanta.org/Discovery_Schools

Goldsmith, who travels often as the only sales manager for Sunbelt Marketing, Inc. knew that, to be successful, the program had to make it easy for busy people like him to volunteer. “That’s why we decided to have it on Saturday mornings from 10 to Noon. It won’t mess up your weekend and we have a lot of laughs, too,” he explains.

Ron Clark EDUCATION PIONEER • MENTOR • CLASS CLOWN By Stacy Moser
Ron Clark owes his successful teaching career to a raging case of food poisoning when he was just out of college. “I had saved enough money to travel to Romania to try to find the grave of the original Dracula—Vlad the Impaler—when I had a horrible case of food poisoning,” he explains. “I flew home to North Carolina and was hospitalized. That week, a teacher at the local school passed away unexpectedly. Aurora is so far from anything (it’s 20 minutes from a stoplight) that it’s hard to attract teachers. My mom begged me to take the job and, to appease her, I visited the school. The students were rowdy, with a ton of academic challenges. I looked into a classroom and it was complete chaos. This kid looked at me and said, ‘Is you gon’ be our new teacher?’ I said, ‘Uh … yes.’ I just felt it. And 23 years later, I’m still at it!”
[
WHEN I FIRST STARTED, TRYING TO REACH THE KIDS, I STOOD ON DESKS—WHATEVER I COULD.
[
“It was then I envisioned a school where every teacher would be bold,” he says. He partnered with Kim Bearden (read more about her on p. 26), to open the innovative Ron Clark Academy in 2007. “A lot of people think of me as the Willy Wonka of education. The school is a magical wonderland—a cross between Hogwarts and Disney World. I’m extremely strict, though, with discipline and academic expectations. It’s hard. Kids cry. But our lessons are full of energy and magic.” To date, 43,000 educators from Australia to Japan and all of the 50 states have visited the school to learn about their novel teaching methods. When asked which kids worry him the most, he answers, “All of them. I hate when people say, ‘If you can affect one life, it will all be worth it.’ In my head, I’m like, ‘Crap! I have to drastically improve the life of every child!’” He says his favorite part of the Intown neighborhood is the beautiful, hidden communities off the main streets. “Driving through Morningside and Inman Park at night, seeing lights shining on the homes and feeling the peace of the area brings me joy.” And when it’s time to eat, you can find Ron at Mary Mac’s Tea Room with a plate of fried chicken and collard greens. “When I first started, trying to reach the kids, I stood on desks, wore everything from cowboy to circus clown costumes, made home visits, took them on field trips—whatever I could. My principal said I ruffled other teachers’ feathers, because they wouldn’t do all that. She said it was best to close my door and not be so public with my methods.”

Top Teachers Make The Grade
Standout Educators Receive An A-Plus For Their Commitment To Our Kids

n a refrigerator magnet near you: “When teachers enjoy teaching, kids just know.” Isn’t that the truth? Think back to your years in school and your mind probably stops at a handful of teachers who clearly were there because they enjoyed inspiring you to do your best—to push past your fears and try. We talked to these highly effective Intown teachers to find out how they communicate their inspiration to students. (And their students just know.)
Collins Anderson can relate to students who fall through the cracks in school. “My mother and I moved when I was 12, and I quietly fell behind in school,” she remembers.
FALL 2017
“But art class is what made me feel comfortable as a teenager and got me to school daily.” She strives to create a classroom atmosphere where students feel calm and comfortable— and free to collaborate with their classmates. And she wants her students to be prepared for design careers in the future. “We create projects to incorporate science, technology, engineering, arts, and math on a daily basis. Our little problem solvers will be ready!”
Kim Bearden The Ron Clark Academy Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Middle School Language Arts Teacher Kim Bearden, inducted into The National Teachers Hall of Fame in 2016, not only teaches middle schoolers, but is a much-sought-after trainer who has taught thousands of educators how to empower students. One way she engages kids is by transforming her classroom into stimulating settings, like her Sentence Construction Zone, using borrowed scaffolding, tools, ladders, and lumber. “Students
wear construction helmets and build paragraphs using wood blocks that represent different types of clauses and sentences,” she explains. “When I look at my students, I don’t just see who they are—I believe in what they can become. I expose them to opportunities and adventures to prepare them for challenges that await.”
Elizabeth Stewart
Intown Community School 7th–8th Grade Science Teacher Elizabeth Stewart is proud of the work she and her colleagues do on a daily basis. “It’s so rewarding because middle schoolers grapple with some of life’s big questions— but they’re still open to outside guidance.” She is highly aware that seventh and eighth grade can be a time of intense self-doubt for kids. “Sometimes the teaching agenda has to be shelved so we can work on a particular interpersonal issue. Social–emotional learning is a key aspect of middle school.” She
enjoys seeing the “aha!” moments as her students apply classroom concepts to everyday life. “Science isn’t a class where students just sit and listen. It’s about hands-on exploration. These kids are active, curious people, so this fits them well.”

to engage them. She
organized a club, called the “Poo Patrol,” to reach kids through humor and their love of animals. “The club members clean cages and play with animals during lunch each day. They build a very close bond with each other that way—whether they are a fast or slow learner, athletic or not, rich or poor,” she explains.

“Teenagers are so ready to make the jump into complicated abstract applications of knowledge,” says John Brandhorst of his students. “It’s exciting to see them bridge those gaps. They have incredible humor and insight that keeps me on my toes,” he laughs. “My job is like spending the whole day in a giant improv comedy company.” He says he worries about kids who are addicted to perfection. “Kids
are under so much pressure these days to make perfect grades and compete globally,” he explains. “I try to be the antithesis to standardization. The arts are all about process. I want to help them love the process more than the product.”

No one prepares a child for school like Kenan.
The preschool years are a crucial developmental time for children. For nearly 45 years the Kenan Preschool has given children the strongest possible foundation for learning. Kenan’s research-based academic curriculum, focused on language and literacy, unleashes each child’s critical thinking and passion for knowledge.
