1. Brush Sushi Izakaya delights with its gastropub fare rooted in Japanese cuisine. The sushi is divine, but don’t pass on the lobster ramen made with overnight lobster broth, sautéed lobster, egg and fried shallots. Take note, though, they only serve four bowls each day. 316 Church St. BrushAtl.com

4. “Tapas” aren’t just reserved for Spanish cuisine anymore. Amara serves an authentic approach to Indian and modern American fare with small plates like shishito peppers with whipped paneer and other items like the duck confit samosa. Wash it all down with the East India cocktail, which is made with cognac, dark rum, pineapple and bitters. 870 Inman Village Pkwy. AmaraAtlanta.com 5. f you think Jake’s Ice Cream is all Jake Rothschild is about, think again. This Jake-of-all

trades—urban farmer, director of a food incubator, entrepreneur and chief encourager of rising food stars—is into almost as many businesses as there are flavors of his legendary ice cream. While Jake keeps a cooler full of fresh ideas for the ice cream business he founded in 1999, his skills as a food entrepreneur and his passion and love of nature and nurture have evolved into helping others craft businesses they’ve dreamed of. The variety of businesses he is helping stuns. Friends and fellow foodie entrepreneurs from the halls of high-flying dot.coms to fig farmers come

for Jake’s counsel. They hope for the contagious success of Jake’s Midas touch on everything from helping student-athletes tend and harvest school gardens to seeing crawfish go the 20 or so feet from his from “pond-to-table” cooking school in College Park, to making work-play-live-urban space truly available to all socioeconomic groups in the inner city.

“Helping people get their dream—that is what has always mattered most to me. I don’t get a charge like that with anything else I do,” he says, peering over reading glasses, blue-green eyes sparkling.

Jake guides budding entrepreneurs creating “sustainable, healthy, humane enterprises that are gifts to the world.” The secret to his, and ultimately their success: if you are taken under his wing, the encouragement and love come with reality checks. Ultimately four cooking schools, with ideas spanning continents, will be among the projects launched and those “in the oven.” The Cooking School at Irwin Street and The Cooking School at Sweet Selma Farms are already in full swing.

JAKE HAS HIS HANDS FULL AT HIS POPULAR ICE CREAM SHOP. OFFERING PATRONS A VARIETY OF DELICIOUS FLAVORS TO CHOOSE FROM, SOME OF HIS FAVORITES INCLUDE WHITE HOUSE CHERRY, KISS OF THE LEPRECHAUN, AND BLUEBERRY BUTTERMILK.

“At the classes, strangers meet over a pasta maker, and by the time students have made organic noodles and sauce together, they’ve become friends, and are looking forward to the next class together,” Jake says. Meanwhile, at The Farmhouse at Sweet Selma Farms in College Park, pilots in Delta Air Lines’ rigorous training programs revel in the serenity and nurturing environment Jake has created at his 4,000-square-foot bed and breakfast. Stepping outside the cooking school kitchen to walk the farm, Jake examines the mushroom business up-close, occasionally checking emails filled with the business plans and dreams of his protégés and partners. His entrepreneurial skills are honed by years of creating his own successes and learning the lessons of what not to do. And when he’s not working round the clock, you can find Jake at Manuel’s Tavern. “I feel like I am at home in a place of history ... a place that matters ... and that the echoes of some of Atlanta’s greatest figures still lurk there. The food is also right on point.”

At Sweet Selma Farms, named for his pioneering great aunt, rescue turkeys, chickens, and ducks have happily found a new home, and greet Jake with eggs and enthusiasm. Even the peacocks seem to strut on cue for this animal lover who treasures rescue dogs and other creatures, including Jim Tom, the turkey who found his third and final home with Jake after being rehomed by his first and second owners for chasing cars and a running down a boyfriend, respectively.

As a kid growing up in Powder Springs, Tyler Lynch cherished his family’s trips into Atlanta. So much so that he vowed to one day live in the city. And today he does. In Midtown, near Piedmont Park. “I love the city and I love its energy,” Tyler explains one leisurely Saturday over lunch at Rreal Tacos in Midtown. His antique-dealing parents imbued him with a passion for the past. Even as a kid, he alone would man the family stand at the Lakewood 400 Antiques Market. Historic preservation became an interest when his parents swapped lodging with a 90-year-old woman and they all moved into a farmhouse that he says, “ … my parents renovated for

years.” Today he uses his fun and highly anticipated Thrift with Tyler extravaganzas to support The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

The lucky ones meet early one Saturday morning and board a luxury bus to fruitful thrifting destinations either west of the city like Villa Rica or north of the city in Marietta. In addition, there’s a disc jockey, cocktails, a catered lunch and swag bags. Most recently, he raised $3,350 for The Georgia Trust by donating 15 percent of ticket sales along with individual donations received. He also relinquishes 100 percent of the raffle money as well.

Twice a year, Tyler, despite his demanding day job working with interior designers and retailers for Codarus in AmericasMart, plans two installments of the Thrift with Tyler bus tour sponsored by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) and AmericasMart. Announcements are made via his Facebook and Instagram Thrift with Tyler accounts but the roughly 55 tickets, which are under $100, sell out quick.

Sarah and Peter Servold took their passion for healthy food to the next level with their Paleo Diet food-delivery business in San Diego back in 2012. The demand was high for Paleo in San Diego and now they have focused on bringing the business to Atlanta. “Our menu has the highest-quality ingredients and changes each week according to the season. We get great produce and can support Georgia farmers and ranchers here,” Peter explains. They send ready-to-eat, organic, non-GMO, fresh, tasty food anywhere in the world from their Old Fourth Ward digs.

Q

What motivates you to work hard at your business?

Being in the food industry is no joke. Long hours and low pay. You have to have a love affair with food to see it through. Putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations always moves us to the next level of success.

Q

The Paleo Diet has become a mainstay on the American dining scene. What does it mean to “eat Paleo”?

To us, Paleo represents not only eating the highest-quality “real” and unprocessed food (think outside grocery-store aisles) but it’s also a way of life—paying attention to nutrition, sleep and exercise.

Q Q

How did you and Peter meet each other?

Why did you choose Intown as a location for your business? We’re Intown folks through and through, no question. We wanted our business to be in a vibrant, up-and-

coming neighborhood. We chose Old Fourth Ward—location, location, location! Seriously. Little to no commute was our big focus and we wanted to be near MARTA.

Q

What are your favorite things to do in Intown? We take friends to Ponce City Market, Buford Highway and the BeltLine. I workout at Highland Yoga and

Pure Barre. Peter works out with DJ at The Forum at Ponce City Market. And our favorite restaurant, hands down, is Ticonderoga Club. You can’t find a better crew serving up the most insane dishes in Atlanta. Go to PetesPaleo.com to find out more.
