We’re kicking off 2018 with a special section dedicated to our favorite pets! I’m gung ho about this because I’ve been a dog lover for years. And although my boxer, Miles, is no longer physically with me, he lives on in my heart forever. That’s why I couldn’t get enough of our feature on People & Their Pets (p. 23). Each pet owner submitted a photo of their beloved bestie with a brief description about what makes their baby stand out. I promise, you’re going to love each write-up. If your dog, cat, or bird didn’t make it into this issue, show us a photo of you with them by tagging @MyIntownMagazine on Facebook. We want to know what makes them so special to you.

troll along Atlanta’s winding BeltLine and it’s impossible not to be awed with the wonderful pieces of art that dot the trail. This outdoor gallery space offers local sculptors, painters and muralists an opportunity to share their creativity with the entire city. Andrew Thomas Catanese, one such painter, has done just that—in celebrating Atlanta as our beloved city in a forest.

SPRING 2018

Speaking of the outdoors, Andrew uses Mother Nature not only as a canvas but as inspiration. “When it comes to ‘artist’s block’ oftentimes I just need to return to actual forests, apart from those I’ve painted, and have a peaceful walk or run; usually the exercise and fresh air clear my head. I ran cross-country and track in high school and college, and I still spend as much time running or walking on trails as I can.”

20

Another way Andrew gets in touch with his creative spirit is inside his studio, located at westside’s Goat Farm Arts Center. It is there that he can people-watch, unleash bubbling ideas and connect with the surrounding art community. “I can’t encourage people enough to explore the art scene here in Atlanta,” Andrew says. “There is an immense amount of talent, and I think Atlanta is on the verge of really breaking through as a major art hub in the United States.”

... ATLANTA IS ON THE VERGE OF REALLY BREAKING THROUGH AS A MAJOR ART HUB IN THE UNITED STATES.

[

Andrew was just selected as one of The Creatives Project’s 2018-20 Artist-in-Studio Residents, a role formed to provide arts education and outreach for Atlanta’s young artistic minds, and plans to get his Master of Fine Arts in the near future. “My career and work is tied indelibly to the South, and I feel that I have a responsibility, after everything the city has given me, to help build the art scene here in any way that I can.” And when he’s not busy painting the town pretty, you can find him at Revolution Doughnuts. Head out to the BeltLine bridge, over Ralph McGill Boulevard near Two Urban Licks, and you’ll see Andrew’s lush mural, “City in a Forest.” The piece brings the plants and animals Andrew sees every day in Georgia alongside moral narratives from the Bible, mythology and fables. “The central narrative in this painting is a scene of communion combined with eating the fruit of knowledge, meant to symbolize community and the pursuit of progress.” Andrew’s mural is a stellar addition to the Eastside Trail and a reminder that even more art is going up on the newly added four miles of gallery space on the now finished Westside Trail.

he children of Oakhurst Elementary School are in good hands. Elizabeth Lindley is there to make sure they are. She’s worked as a crossing guard outside the school for the last 33 years—making sure the kids get where they’re going without so much as a scratch. Rain or shine, she’s shown up at 7:15 in the morning to escort them through the traffic and into the building. Then, she comes back at 2:15 to guide them across the street and on their way home. When asked how she came by this unique job, she explains, “When my two daughters were in grade school, a policeman who knew me asked me to replace a guard who quit.” That was back in the early 1980s—fast forward to 2018 and she’s still at it. “My husband passed and I decided I’d retire last December. I stayed home for about two weeks . . . but I got tired of it right away, so I decided to come out of retirement,” she laughs. “I went to the police department, got back my uniform and went to work.”

[

[

OR A FEW WORDS.

Her two daughters are grown now and Elizabeth is blessed with six grandchildren. But she treasures her extended family of Oakhurst Elementary students. “They run up to me in the morning and say, ‘Good morning, Miss Lindley!’ I tell them that they make my day. And I say, ‘Have a good day at school! Be sure to learn your ABCs!’ You make a difference in a few minutes or a few words.” Then she adds, “Sometimes the parents bring me a cookie or a cup of hot chocolate when it’s cold. There are some super parents there and the kids are so special.”

MyIT_018-023_PROFILES_PETS_EVENTS_0318.indd 21

She says of the traffic near the school, “Oh man! I nearly was hit one day! You have to watch those cars. It’s like on the freeway—people have their coffee, so they’re not paying attention. Praise God, I’ve never had even one incident.” Elizabeth’s sister lives five blocks from the school, so Elizabeth goes to her house after guard duty for a cup of coffee and a chat. She says she’s not one to go out socially, but she gets more than enough hugs and conversation when she’s with her “crossing kids.” CSDecatur.net/Oakhurst

On the other hand, Tabasco Original Red Pepper Sauce comes in at 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville heat units.

At any given time, roughly 200 to 300 hot sauces line a wall of the outpost. Twenty to 30 of those dish additions being extreme, like the Mad Dog 357 Hot Sauce, which racks up 357,000 Scoville heat units (a way of measuring the hotness of a chili pepper or anything derived from chili peppers).

MyIT_018-023_PROFILES_PETS_EVENTS_0318.indd 22

Word of mouth has made the hot sauce wall a draw for people. But David makes sure that the produce side of the 85-year-old family business, which was first known for its fresh tomatoes, is never neglected. Before moving to its current location, where it’s been for more than 20 years, the store was strictly a produce business located in Downtown Atlanta. “My granddaddy did the buying back then. I did a lot of the prep work, the stocking, the unloading and everything,” David recalls. “It’s just something I’ve always liked,” he says. The thought of not taking over the family business never occurred to him. Today, he runs the shop with his mother, Judy Black, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. When it’s time for dinner, The Corner Pub is a favorite. And for the past 15 years, this neighborhood eatery has purchased its tomatoes from the trusted store owner. DavidsProduceMarket.com

rom the outside, David’s Produce Market echoes the familiar feel of a classic Southern country store. But under its weathered wooden roof and aged metal awning, lies what has been touted as the best selection of hot sauce in Atlanta among fanatics in communities like the social networking and news aggregation site, Reddit.com.

Similar to many of the store’s other offerings, the hot sauce wall began as a fluke. Owner David Glenn routinely introduces various products (think vintage sodas and gourmet baked goods) into the roadside shop (near Briarlake and Lavista roads) to see what sparks visitors’ interest. “I started the hot sauce section with just a handful when we first opened and it just kind of grew from there,” he says. Carefully selecting the bottles the store will stock, the assortment spans from very mild, like the shop’s own Georgia Peach and Vidalia Onion Hot Sauce, to tear-inducing like Ed Currie’s Smokin Ed’s Carolina Reaper Sling Blade Hot Sauce.
