Hadyn Hilton E N T R E P R E N E U R • C AT L O V E R • B A R I S TA

By Annie Paschal

Java Cats Café owner Hadyn Hilton burst onto the Intown scene with a unique idea dedicated to serving both the people—and cats—of the area. The remarkable concept of a cat café isn’t new in theory, but Java Cats is the first café of its kind to come to Atlanta. Half of the café, which is located on Memorial Drive, is dedicated to coffee concoctions like lattes and cappuccinos, but the other half is where lives are changed. Guests are invited to make an appointment in the cat lounge where they can interact with adoptable cats like Jupiter, and the orange tabby, Penelope, from PAWS Atlanta. PAWS is the oldest no-kill animal shelter in Atlanta, which made it the purr-fect match for Hilton and her new business. With a background in the restaurant industry, Hilton is no stranger to the struggles that come with operating a café. However, it was her love of animals that drove her to start her business. Hilton chose the Intown area because of its quirky character. She wanted to be surrounded and supported by individuals she felt would love the cats and the cause. Hilton enjoys seeing fellow cat lovers meet up at the café and hopes to make it a hub for local social activities.

Hilton has also partnered with Intown nonprofit, Gathering Industries, a food preparation service dedicated to helping Atlanta’s homeless by equipping them with hospitality skills. Gathering Industries also supplies the café with vegan and gluten-free options. Although the café is currently a forprofit business, Hilton hopes to eventually make it completely nonprofit. On any given day there are up to 15 cats and kittens in the lounge available for adoption. To date, more than 50 cats have found their fur-ever home. But booking an appointment doesn’t mean you have to adopt. You can just come and enjoy the company. “This gentleman came in with a walker the other day. He came into the cat lounge and I put a cat in his lap and he just lit up with a smile,” Hilton says. Hilton is thrilled to be in close cat-loving proximity to Republic Social House, which hosts its own Caturday Saturday events right down the street. Another food favorite of hers is Ria’s Bluebird and before selling coffee at the café, she was a regular at Octane. JavaCatsCafe.com

“I hope that when the hype dies down that this is still a thriving café, not only because we are giving back to the community, but because of the great customer service, genuine hospitality, delicious coffee, and the fact that people have a fun time here,” says Hilton.

Jen Hidinger

SOCIAL RESTAURATEUR • STORYTELLER • RUNNER

By Stacy Moser Jen Hidinger is the poster child for those who triumph over tragedy. She and her late husband, Ryan, dreamed of opening their own restaurant, but those plans were sidelined when he was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in 2012. The couple struggled through their grief during his treatment with the moral support and financial donations from friends and family. Motivated by that outpouring of compassion during his illness, Jen and Ryan created a foundation to help others who are in need of financial assistance. Now, Jen carries on Ryan’s legacy and is a driving force behind Intown’s popular Staplehouse restaurant and its nonprofit sister, The Giving Kitchen.

Q

All after-tax profits from Staplehouse go to The Giving Kitchen. Who do you help with the funds?

Q

You call yourself a storyteller for The Giving Kitchen. What message do you want to share?

We assist restaurant workers who face catastrophe and have nowhere to turn. Maybe they’ve lost their home or lost a child. On average, our grants cover three months of living expenses so they focus on healing. To date, The Giving Kitchen has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 650 workers who were in crisis.

I do lots of public speaking to tell the story of how The Giving Kitchen impacts our community. Did you know there are 240,000 restaurant workers in metro Atlanta right now? Their need for emergency assistance is vast. The more the story is told, the greater our impact can be.

Q

I always say that it doesn’t come without teamwork. We have an amazing staff, and with Ryan and his wife, Kara, as our general manager, we make a great team.

Q

What’s your favorite part of Intown?

My fiancé, John, and I live in Grant Park on the BeltLine. Being outside is good for the soul, so I love to go for a run there. For fun, I took an amazing improv class at Dad’s Garage recently—they have such good energy. We love Kimball House and we’re big fans of Ticonderoga Club and BoccaLupo, too. Kelley Raye

ARTIST • GIRL BOSS • CAFFEINE CONNOISSEUR

By Alex McCray

A part-time hostess job at the restaurant Goin’ Coastal—that was all Kelley Raye had as a backup plan the day she decided to leave the corporate world and forge a path as a photographer. “I heard that it takes about four years for businesses to really get going, but I was like, ‘I can do it in one,’” says Raye.

[

THE INTRIGUE OF UNVEILING

THE PERSON BEHIND

[

A MOVEMENT, IDEA, PRODUCT OR BRAND THAT IS A PART OF THE INTOWN COMMUNITY EXCITES RAYE .

“I wanted to meet people that are like me—entrepreneurs, either starting out or not starting out, big, not big,” Raye says. Over 100 portrait sessions and many hashtags later, Raye has received requests from around the country and has photographed numerous celebrities because of the series. Yet, some of her favorite subjects to photograph remain those close to home. The intrigue of unveiling the person behind a movement, idea, product or brand that is a part of the Intown community excites Raye. When Melanie Wade, founder of Golda Kombucha, called, “I was like, ‘There’s a face behind that product,’” Raye exclaims. When she isn’t staying caffeinated at one of her unofficial coffeehouse offices, such as Java Jive, Raye spends time at Manuel’s Tavern, Majestic Diner, and the Plaza Theatre. “I like the energy of this area. My first Atlanta job was at the CVS on North Highland Avenue and my first Blockbuster card came from the one down on Ponce.”

my

SUMMER 2017

PHOTO COURTESY OF KELLEY RAYE, PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDRIA LINDQUIST.

While her photography business may have taken slightly longer to gain traction than she anticipated, her Girlboss Branding Session series took off faster than she expected. The idea for the special portrait sessions for female business owners started in 2015, when Raye walked into the now closed Henry & June coffee shop and boutique and ended up photographing and interviewing one of the store’s owners, Camryn Park. What began as a small addition to her blog, KelleyRaye.com, and excuse to connect with the female entrepreneurs in her longtime Poncey-Highland neighborhood, grew into something larger.
