Last month, we also told you about Richard Goldsmith and his involvement with the Discovery Program at Parklane Elementary. Well, I wanted to volunteer. So I went to the school and worked on math problems with some fifth graders. The best part? We made slime! It feels great to give back and this is the perfect season for it. Get in on the action by signing up for Hands On Atlanta’s Discovery Program. A couple of hours with a few children can impact their lives forever. Inside this issue, you’ll get the scoop on three special getaways (p. 13). If you haven’t planned your family’s annual holiday trip yet, we’ve got you covered. One of my favorite pastimes is going to the spa for some R&R. Delia Champion is a night owl. And that’s a good thing. Fans of her uber-popular restaurant, The Flying Biscuit, knew that if they craved breakfast, she was there for them—day or night. And now, as an encore, she’s selling delectable sausage creations at Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand, which is on all three levels of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “In the restaurant industry, you live differently than most people you wait on. They go home and go to bed. You go home, but not to bed. You’re off at 2am and you have to find friends to do things with. I hung out with people in the music industry,” Delia explains. “We’d talk about our future and I’d say, ‘I’m going to have a breakfast restaurant. I’m tired of coming to work hungry because I get up late and there’s nowhere that serves what I want to eat.’” In 1993, her friend, Emily Saliers, co-founder of the band, Indigo Girls, urged Delia to chase her dreams and loaned her some money to get started. “That’s how I went from a server to restaurant owner. It was a leap of faith!” Delia says.

Her funky, colorful restaurant became known for excellent fare and is now a staple in Atlanta’s food pantheon. But the big dreams didn’t stop there. “I was driven. I have a journal—I write about what I hope for.” Delia wanted her restaurant to stand out from the rest. She perfected a recipe for chicken sausage that was locally sourced from healthy ingredients (sans fillers or preservatives, and completely hormone free) and lovingly prepared. In 2011, when she decided to sell The Flying Biscuit, flirting with the idea of retirement, she realized that she could concentrate solely on offering her sausage creations in a smaller, simpler venue. So Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand was born in East Atlanta followed by a West Midtown locale. “I just love the Intown locations,” she explains. Her Sausage Stands at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium are doing really well, too. When season ticket-holders were polled about what food they wanted in the stadium, her restaurant ranked No. 5 in the top eight. “I’m humbled! I didn’t see that coming!” she says. When asked about her successful career in the food industry, she chuckles. “I thought I was going to be the 80-year-old server with no retirement program. Most preschoolers would be pleased to get to stay up late enough to watch a movie premiere. But Madison Muffley not only attended a movie premiere, she walked its red carpet, too. Madison (“Maddie”) plays Clare, Kristen Bell’s daughter, in “A Bad Moms Christmas,” which hit theaters Nov. 1 and was filmed on location in Atlanta. Although the adult nature of the film’s humor kept Maddie on the sidelines during the actual screening, she enthusiastically endorses it: “It’s my favorite movie, next to “Beauty and the Beast!”” she says.

Melinda says that Maddie’s first time on the set of “A Bad Moms Christmas” was a little overwhelming, even though she’s been in TV commercials and photo shoots before. “There were a lot of people in a very small space. But Maddie’s the type of kid where you’re a stranger to her for the first five minutes and then you’re her new best friend. She adapted really well.” Add to the list of Maddie’s talents her natural gift for memorization. “It’s really uncanny. She had an audition with a nine-page script and she memorized it all in a day. She enjoyed it. By the end, she was correcting me when I ran lines with her!” Maddie is especially impressed by the gown she wore to the premiere of “A Bad Moms Christmas,” which involved a visit to the CH, Carolina Herrera boutique in Lenox Square. “And my shoes have hearts and a bumblebee on them!” she enthuses. For more down-to-earth pursuits, though, Melinda says Maddie loves Morningside Kitchen. “Blue is her favorite server there. He gives her a hug and says, ‘Milk and pasta, right?’” And after a drama or music class at MZStageworks or the Alliance Theatre, Maddie takes her parents to the playground at Orme Park. Maddie, the daughter of branding expert Melinda Chandler and real-estate mogul Mikel Muffley, is poised to set Atlanta’s burgeoning TV and movie industry on fire. “From the time she was really little, people would say that she’s so adorable—we should check into doing modeling,” Melinda explains. She was told that Maddie’s penchant for “dramatic play” made her a good candidate for casting agencies looking for youth actors. “She loves to sing and dance,” her mom says. As Atlanta’s go-to girl for all things cocktails, mixologist Tiffanie Barriere spends most of her time spreading the gospel on intelligent drinking. It’s something she has been doing for a very long time. For starters, Tiffanie’s family gatherings usually centered around imbibing creative libations. And as a young adult, the Houston native started bartending. From there, it simply became a passion. “I just started to read about everything I was drinking,” says Tiffanie, who now goes by “The Drinking Coach” on social media platforms and when she’s speaking publicly on cocktail culture around Atlanta or elsewhere. “I would grab a bottle and take notes, read the back of it and try to figure out if I could go to the distillery.” That curiosity led her to overseeing the beverage program at lauded Atlanta restaurant, One Flew South, and becoming a brand ambassador for Avion Tequila.

Still, Tiffanie wants to do even more. She hopes that her next endeavor, Drinking with the Girls, is the answer. “I’ve decided to get a group of female bartenders together,” she says, “and have a consultation team and provide a platform so that we can do more cocktail conferences, and be able to take large brands to another level by making them really cool.” Her radiant smile and bubbly personality lights up any room she’s in. But whatever you do, just don’t ask her to make you a frozen drink. It won’t go well. “I’m over the slushy machines,” she says. “I know that it’s trendy and we’re in the South but just dumping a bunch of liquor in a machine and having it spin on ice isn’t my idea of a great cocktail. I just don’t find it entertaining.” When she isn’t schooling folks on slushies and the ingredients in a proper Old-Fashioned, you can find Tiffanie hanging out at some of her favorite Intown watering holes like Bon Ton. And most recently, Tiffanie hosted an “Oh Baby, I Like It Raw!” class where she taught AFWF participants about the importance of using raw and organic ingredients in cocktails. Shortly thereafter, she spoke to 30,000 women on the basics of being top-notch tipplers. In February 2018, she’ll combine her talent with two African-American chefs, Deborah VanTrece and Jennifer Hill Booker, for the first all-black culinary showcase at the esteemed James Beard House in New York City.
