Q

What makes Midtown a big draw to potential home buyers?

Q

A: It’s one of the most sought-after neighborhoods due to its bounty of condos and historic, singlefamily homes, live-walk environment, Piedmont Park, proximity to the BeltLine and ever-appreciating home values. There’s a diverse mix of architectural styles, too, that stands the test of time. —Mikel Muffley, Founder, Muffley & Associates Real Estate. MuffleyHomes.com

A: Rotate a rug often so it’s equally exposed to traffic and light and fades evenly. For spills, apply salt or baking soda, let it absorb the stain, then vacuum. —Janice Howell, V.P., MODA Floors and Interiors. 1417 Chattahoochee Ave. NW MODAFloorsAndInteriors.com

Morningside residents Emily and J.C. Velez desired work-from-home flexibility, but their new home lacked an office. P

remiere event designer Sean O’Keefe was born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, but headed out to the United States’

West Coast at age 25. There, he built a successful career as a private chef, establishing himself as a go-to for the Hollywood set. He created more than just a delicious meal for his clients, he presented a full dining experience. Paying close attention to all the little details is part of how Sean approaches his mission “to make life eventful.” In 2008, life led him to the Atlanta area and he feels that he’s now finally putting down some roots.

[

FALL 2016

“Moving from Southern California to Fulton County was a bit of a shock,” Sean recalls. “I loved Georgia within moments of moving here. Somehow it reminded me of Newfoundland; I think the Southern charm that Atlanta offered made me feel like I was home.”

18 MyMidtown_016-023_Profiles.indd 18

Sean soon realized that his career would take a slightly different direction here. One day, as this avid horseman spent time at the stables, he chatted with a woman there who asked him if he knew who could help her create a Derby-themed event to raise money for a charity. The proverbial “light bulb” illuminated for Sean and the business that became Sean O’Keefe Events was a champion right out of the gate. “The Down Home Derby to benefit the Child Development Association was the first event I created in conjunction with a charity partner in Georgia. Over the years there have been quite a few— including my pride and joy, the Shaken Not Stirred Gala to benefit the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the Chairman’s Tent at the Atlanta Steeplechase. Working alongside some of Georgia’s most incredible nonprofits to create events that increase their profile and donor base has been very rewarding.”

(TOP) TO CREATING GORGEOUS FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR LUXE TABLESCAPES (TOP RIGHT) TO PILING UP THE PERFECT CHEESE PLATE FOR COCKTAIL HOUR (BOTTOM).

Sean exudes commitment to this city and its people. He shares his creativity, knowledge and spirit with a palpable enthusiasm, truly hoping to inspire a chain reaction. “Any moment in life can be eventful if you choose to look at it that way. I think with the speed of our world, most people take special moments for granted. If we take our time and enjoy—truly enjoy—all that we do … life can be magical.”

“I’d love to say that I had lofty dreams as a child,” Sean divulges. “But even as a very young child, I was always able to combine whatever I had to make the best ice cream sundae or the most elaborate pancake station for family and friends.” He offers a few ways to graciously welcome a guest into your home or office.

1

Always make your guests feel welcome as soon as they arrive. It is important that they know how special and lucky you feel knowing that you are entertaining them.

Sean offers up his expertise in regular spots as the Bon Vivant on Atlanta & Co., with the Craft Box Girls, on CBS, The Weather Channel and AppleTV. He recently opened studio space in Midtown, off of Cheshire Bridge, next to Cut Flower Wholesale. Here, he maintains offices for consulting with clients and, most importantly, has a full studio kitchen where he can film demos and classes.

Engage your guests in conversation that is about them and what they have been doing—let them know how special their friendship is to you personally.

His career in entertaining demands he be “on” while working, so Sean keeps his downtime comparatively quiet. He’s rejuvenated by sacred time in nature and refuels by heading out on hikes, kayaking on the Chattahoochee, horseback riding out in Milton or tending to his apiary and organic garden. “I adore Atlanta and my life here in the city. It vibes like a modern, global city but, it still has a unique smalltown feel.”

The traditional hospitality of Georgia meshed perfectly with Sean’s own sense of graciousness in entertaining. “Atlanta has challenged me to be better, to strive harder on behalf of the friendships I’ve made,” Sean declares. “People have believed in me enough to help me make things happen. If you show up for Atlanta, it’ll show up for you.”

When asked why her grandmother would immigrate here from Japan at the age of 65 and decide to open a restaurant, Sachi replies, “I have an uncle, Kenzo Nakato, who lived in Charlotte, and she came to visit his family and take a Southern tour. She fell in love with the green space and Southern hospitality and decided to stay. She had worked in the Japanese hospitality industry before, so she approached my uncle about starting a restaurant in Atlanta.”

“Back then, sushi was considered the equivalent of fish bait,” Sachi laughs. “My family was determined to elevate the opinion about Japanese cuisine here.” Later, Sachi’s mother, Hiroe, joined the family business. Then, Kiyoshi, Sachi’s father, came from Japan to work at the restaurant. “My mom literally greeted him at the door, fresh off the plane. I think it was love at first sight.”

Midtown. Their restaurant on Cheshire Bridge, given the family name— Nakato—was founded by Sachi’s grandmother back in 1972, when Jimmy Carter was governor of Georgia. “He was making efforts to woo international businesses to Georgia at the time my grandmother opened this restaurant. He would bring visiting business leaders from Japan here for a traditional Japanese meal. They would stay up until the wee hours of the morning, talking business. That’s how he met my grandmother, Tetsuko,” Sachi explains. “Once those companies moved to Atlanta, their workers would come here—homesick for their culture and an authentic Japanese meal.”

To ensure authenticity in his culinary preparations, Executive Chef Yoshifusa Kinjo imports key ingredients from Japan, while seasonal produce is sourced locally. Everything, including the vinegar used in preparing sushi, is made from scratch according to generations-old recipes. Customary Japanese cuisine, known as washoku, is both a culinary philosophy and set of guidelines for preparing food. It’s celebrated for its centuries-old cooking techniques and respect for nature.

Sachi graduated from high school in Atlanta and struck out to Boston University to study art history. But the family business soon drew her back to Atlanta. Now, she oversees the running of the restaurant on a daily basis. She is proud of the way her family offers a taste of Japanese culture and tradition for eager Atlanta diners. When Sachi and her husband, Josh Houghkirk, have rare spare time, they frequent spots around the Midtown neighborhood. “I love walks in Piedmont Park,” she says. “It’s a sentimental place for me, because it’s where my mom and dad would go for a walk on their breaks from the restaurant when they were first falling in love.” She says she finds herself on the BeltLine often and enjoys its many shops and restaurants. “It’s so diverse compared to the suburbs,” she enthuses. She lives in the new Modera Morningside building near Nakato. “You probably think it’s crazy, but one of my favorite parts of the building is that Sprouts is on the ground floor. I’m a grocery store fanatic.” Sachi says working with her family has its own rewards. “Sure, we have our little family dramas, who doesn’t? But when I reflect on my relationship with them, I call them ‘my Google.’ They are my reference point; I reach out to them for advice constantly. I hold onto them for dear life.”

Randi Layne

Randi Layne has been a part of the Atlanta art scene for years. A former dancerturned-fashion model, Randi used her experience in the industry to start CatWalk Productions, Inc. She lends her talents for imaginative event creation every year to the “Bodies as Works of Art” body-painting show for The Chelko Foundation (of which she is also the executive director), whose mission is to empower and inspire women and artists around the world.

MyMidtown_016-023_Profiles.indd 23

This year, the event takes on new life as the Body Art Cabaret at the Westside Cultural Arts Center on September 30. “The cabaret performance brings a vintage touch to variety entertainment, coupled with living artistry. This year’s group includes fire dancers, jugglers, acrobats … all painted by world-class body painters,” says Layne. The Bodies as Works of Art events as a whole have also evolved into Living Art America: The North American Bodypainting Championship, an international competition gathering artists from 30 countries to compete for over $10,000 in grants from The Chelko Foundation. To date, the foundation has donated over $180,000 to deserving artists worldwide.

Started as a way to honor her dear friend, Atlanta artist Paul Chelko, and his wife, Debbie, the original body art show for The Chelko Foundation had humble beginnings. “The first year had 10 participants, ranging from cake decorators to graffiti artists who painted amazing art pieces on the models. Bill Haygood, a long-time friend of Paul and owner of The Cheetah, donated the club to the foundation for the show,” says Layne. The concept of a body art show was seen as breaking new ground in Atlanta at the time and even Layne herself was nervous about the reaction it would get. To her delight, the event was a complete success. “Patrons lined up to purchase a standing-room-only ticket for a sold-out show. We knew at that point that the event was going to be our annual fundraiser,” she explains.
