Be Nice to Your Neighbors

FOUNDER Sherri Adair
Let’s face it, we have all been through it this past year and as we move through 2021, there is something we can all do to help each other out— be nice. It sounds like something our mothers used to say to us and our siblings during a long road trip, and it’s not always easy, but it is ALWAYS good. We need to remember that we are all feeling the effects of the pandemic and that we are each dealing with our own challenges and fears. But before we can extend kindness to others, we also need to remember to be kind to ourselves. It is OK if the house is a bit of a mess, it is OK if you are feeling burnt out or overwhelmed. It’s OK if you feel scared. We need to center ourselves, remind ourselves of our many blessings, and take a second to be grateful for what we do have. Once we’ve done that, we can start to share that energy at home by consciously reminding ourselves to have a little extra patience with our partners and children who may be struggling too. We can extend that mindset to our neighbors and our community too. A wave and a smile go a long way toward promoting positivity. Whether it’s a word of encouragement to the grocery store clerk who has been standing on his/her feet for eight hours or the person who needs to shift into your lane in traffic, just do it. It is really not that hard to put others first. You may just make someone’s day. Who knows—Sandy Springs is known as a great place to raise a family. So the kindness that we promote today could be carried over for generations to come.

Happy Men Are Healthy Men By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
We often hear that money can’t buy happiness. Of course, when the basic needs of life are unmet, money can often alleviate unhappiness. But true happiness comes from a state of satisfaction rather than an ability to buy more. However, money is not the only currency with which we can “buy” happiness. In fact, the most valuable currencies are good health and time. Furthermore, not only will physical well-being lead to happiness, but emotional contentment can bolster our physical health. As for the currency of time, we’ll save that for a future Partners in Health installment on productivity for enhancing men’s health. For now, here are seven things that you can do right now to make your life happier and healthier:
Practice mindfulness—Those who have heard of mindfulness often associate it with meditation. However, mindfulness can take many forms. In its simplest form, mindfulness involves taking a few minutes every day to create self-awareness and awareness of one’s surroundings. By focusing on the present, we relieve the anguish associated with past stressors and future deadlines.
Make a list—Every journey starts with a plan. This weekend, sit down and brainstorm a list of ten or more things that you would like to experience. Then commit to the top two items. Give yourself a deadline and share with a friend or family member who will hold you accountable.
Put it on the calendar—If it’s on the calendar, it is much more likely to be accomplished. Place all of the above items in time slots (yes, even your bedtime). If you miss an “event,” always reschedule it. Calendars work better than endless to-do lists.
Form a team—During the pandemic, we often find ourselves isolated. Sure, we have Zoom calls to fulfill obligations, but these encounters are often not fulfilling. Find others who enjoy the same hobbies. Join a walking group. Form a book club. However simple, togetherness leads to fulfillment that could never be achieved alone. In the words of John Lennon, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” Go it alone—The pandemic has also created an increased demand for our resources. We need to create daily time for taking care of ourselves. Try to set aside 30 minutes or more in the middle of the day to take yourself away from your daily distractions. You will more than make up that time with increased productivity.
Go to sleep—Are tired people grumpy? Ensure that you consistently have a full night’s rest. People who are sleepdeprived have a five-times higher risk of depression. Exercise—Even a little exercise will elevate your mood. Make it a habit.
Many men neglect their physical health. When it comes to emotional health, it’s often a joke. However, unhappiness is no laughing matter. Look for my article on “Balancing Stress for Better Men’s Health” in the next issue. Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with Wellstar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years. Rulers of the Roosts Finding home sweet home is no easy task without the help of seasoned Realtors like Ansley Real Estate’s David & Chrissy Neumann. By Jill Becker
hen asked about the current Atlanta-area real estate market, Chrissy Neumann says without hesitation, “It’s just insane!” A Realtor for almost 20 years, she notes that the inventory of homes for sale is so low right now that buyers literally have to be ready to make an offer and buy on a moment’s notice. “When something does come up, there are instantly multiple offers, and you have to know how to win it,” says Neumann, who, with her husband and partner, David, wins the lion’s share of the battles. The power couple makes up Neumann & Co., which is under the umbrella of Ansley Real Estate, one of the fastest-growing real estate firms in the state. A University of Georgia grad with a bachelor’s in advertising, Neumann switched to real estate after working in strategic marketing at BellSouth for two years. She quit after deciding she wanted to be her own boss and work somewhere she would have total control.
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE HELPING PEOPLE

DAVID AND CHRISSY NEUMANN
She insists a lot of what she learned at UGA is applicable to real estate, though. “One of the two most important things to being a successful agent is knowing how to advertise yourself and your business,” she says, adding that Ansley’s marketing is by far the best in the industry. “The other factor is being part of the community. You have insider knowledge when you live, work and play in the area.” The Neumann clan, which includes five kids ranging in age from 9 to 16, has called Sandy Springs home for the last six years.

FIND WHERE THEY WANT TO LIVE THEIR LIVES.

3 Tips When Looking For a New Home Hunting for a new place to live is a big job and there’s lots to consider, but here are the Neumann’s three steps that are essential to starting your house search off on the right foot.
(FRONT L TO R): TOMMY, DANNY (BACK L TO R): NICK, CHRISSY, REESE, DAVID, MATT
“I get texts all the time from people saying, ‘I want to live in River Chase’ or some other neighborhood. And it’s extremely helpful to able to say, ‘I know a client who’s remodeling and is going to be putting their house on the market in a few months.’” Giving their clients that leg up also extends to knowing when and what not to buy. “People will say that a house is going to go for such-and-such price, but I’ll tell them I don’t want them to pay that. If I don’t think it’s the right home for them or the right price, I’ll tell them.”
Strangely enough, the pandemic has also affected what people are looking for in houses these days. “One is outdoor living space,” says Neumann, referring to things like pools and outdoor fireplaces so homebuyers can spend as much time outside as possible. The other feature is extra living space, she says, explaining that because more and more people are working and schooling from home, they want to avoid being on top of each other. “Everyone’s home more and living completely different than they were a year ago,” says Neumann. “What we sell is where people have spent 90 percent of their time in the last year.”
2. Even if you don’t like certain homes, go ahead and take a look at them so you understand the market and what’s available. Because the more you know, the more comfortable you’ll be making an offer. 3. Find a lender that you trust and get prequalified.
Despite the challenges and long hours involved in her career, trading advertising for real estate has proven a winning strategy for Neumann. “I loved it right off the bat,” she says. “There’s nothing like helping people find where they want to live their lives.” When not showing and selling homes, the Neumann’s enjoy bike riding around the streets of Sandy Springs with their kids, and they especially love dinners at Taco Mac watching sporting events and just laughing together. When on a solo shopping spree, Neumann heads to fab’rik.

Given the low inventory, homes are typically flying off the market, but some do sit and stagnate for a while. “It may not be staged right, or it may need a lot of work,” says Neumann. She and David have a name for folks who just want to click a button and buy a home like we do with so many other things. “We call them ‘Amazon buyers.’”
1. Find an agent who knows the area. Given the current market, this has never been more important.

Stacie Francombe E N T R E P R E N E U R • M O M • O H I O S TAT E FA N
By Alexandra McCray
A member of the wedding and event industry for 20-plus years, Stacie Francombe sensed the economic impact COVID-19 could have on it.
However, being told that her short time as the chief marketing officer for a major tuxedo retailer was ending still came as a surprise. “Like millions of Americans laid off during the pandemic, it was not really something I was prepared for,” Stacie says. The wife and mother of three soon flipped the situation on its head. She used her time to co-found Sign Greeters, a festive yard sign business that now has 54 licensees in 11 states. “The truth is, I’ve always been an entrepreneur,” says Stacie. Among her past successful endeavors is Get Married Media, Inc., a wedding planning resource company that once rivaled The Knot and WeddingWire with a national TV show, website and magazine. And it did not take much to get Stacie’s entrepreneurial wheels spinning again. In fact, it took just one phone call with her best friend, Dawn Cottler, who lives in Parkland, Florida.
THAT IS WHEN MY ENTREPRENEURIAL
SPIRIT KICKED IN. I WAS LIKE, OK. WAIT
A MINUTE. IF EVERYBODY IS SOLD OUT, THERE IS OBVIOUSLY HUGE DEMAND. —STACIE FRANCOMBE
As socially distanced gatherings became the norm, the company’s bold, bright and highly customizable signs have been a source of joy in neighborhoods. That accomplishment, plus the financial peace of mind and happiness of franchise owners, many of whom were unemployed due to the pandemic, are the most rewarding aspects of the business to Stacie. The 46-year-old’s focus continues to be on growing the number of Sign Greeters franchisees, but Stacie and Ivonne are constantly exploring ways to improve the company’s offerings. When not performing installs around Sandy Springs, Stacie says it’s all about, “puppies, kiddos, watching sports and cooking.” You’ll usually find her whipping up meals at home, but when it’s time for takeout, Breadwinner Café & Bakery is one of her go-tos. While Stacie’s out-of-the-house adventures have been minimal during the pandemic, COVID-19 friendly trips include Hammond Nails of Sandy Springs. signgreeters.com

The women had both seen people in their areas use oversized yard greeting signs as a way to celebrate special occasions. Though Dawn was able to order a sign for her son, Matthew, Stacie had just one problem when she tried to do the same for the high school graduation of her son, Josh. Every local company she contacted was sold out. “That is when my entrepreneurial spirit kicked in. I was like, OK. Wait a minute. If everybody is sold out, there is obviously huge demand,” says Stacie. While Dawn returned to work as a dentist, Stacie and Dawn’s sorority sister, Ivonne Simon, ran with the idea of filling that supply void. In one to two months, Sign Greeters was a full-blown business complete with a website, branding, manufacturer and multiple franchisees, with Stacie serving as its CEO and Ivonne as president.

Janae Finley, 34, says that her ordeal with breast cancer was both a curse and a blessing. “I was referred to TurningPoint [Breast Cancer
Rehabilitation] to aid in my recovery following surgery and radiation. I came to TurningPoint and never left,” she says. “Approximately one month after completing my therapy I began working at TurningPoint as a physical therapist. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.” In March 2020, TurningPoint made the decision to switch to primarily remote services for the health of their staff and patients. The transition has been tough for Janae. “I truly believe in the power of healing touch,” she explains. But despite the challenges of going virtual, she says she has definitely seen some good things come from it. “Because we can reach more people, we no longer have a limit on the number of participants who can attend our events,” Janae says, adding that she has been able to assist patients as far as Macon and Rome.
—JANAE FINLEY Though she misses the face-to-face interaction, Janae says that by working hard she’s still able to establish the strong connections of support her patients need during these even more difficult times. “One of my most heartwarming moments during COVID-19 was with a patient who I had previously seen in the clinic,” tells Janae, who reached out to check on them after she received her third surgery. “She proceeded to tell me about her recovery and the last thing she said in her email was, ‘Thanks for being the best PT and friend ever!!’ In all of her time on her long breast cancer journey, she had never had anyone just check in with her other than a post-op visit with a doctor. She was so appreciative, and when I did finally see her for a telehealth session three weeks after her surgery, she just wanted to thank me so much for being there for her and hanging in there with her on her long journey. She told me that she would not have even gone through with her last surgery if I didn’t encourage her to take care of herself. Speaking with her that day made me realize that even through an email or a telehealth appointment I can still make a difference in people’s lives.” When not attending to patients, Janae enjoys eating at Chef Rob’s Caribbean Cafe and Rumi’s Kitchen, getting creative at Sips n Strokes and catching tunes at Cafe 290. She welcomed her son, Ajay, into the world in late 2020. myturningpoint.org

Q A
What do you recommend if I have a shower leak?
It depends on where you see the leak. If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing]. If the water is spotting the ceiling below or appearing on the paint adjacent to your shower, then David Drexler the tile or pan may not be sealed properly. A tile professional or plumber may be required. A Drexler representative would be happy to help diagnose your leak.

GARAGE DOORS
Q A
When are do-it-yourself repairs not an option?
A garage door system operates under high tension and can be extremely dangerous. Simple maintenance such as lubrication of moving parts, programming remotes, and replacing batteries are safe for a homeowner to perform. However, all repairs, including replacing broken springs, faulty John Nale wiring and an off-track door, are dangerous and should be left to a trained professional.

How do I know which waterproofing product(s) I need?
A
Before rushing to purchase waterproofing products that are available at your local home improvement store or even on late-night infomercials, we always recommend having a professional waterproofing specialist evaluate your specific issue to fully explain the causes and explain the different options for repair. Some repairs can be as simple as Derek Ritchie sealing a crack, while others may require a drainage system on the outside or inside of your home.

Does a larger HVAC system offer better performance?
A
Bigger is not only not better, it may be worse. Your heating and air-conditioning must be matched to your living space. Geography, square footage, insulation value, window type and amount, along with ceiling height are all part of the calculations required to determine the “right size” of equipment. Cool Bill Mashraky Air Mechanical Comfort Consultants are trained to make recommendations based upon these and other factors.

GUTTERS
Q
If my gutters are not free of debris, can my home be damaged?
A
Improperly channeled roof water that stems from clogged gutters (primarily leaves, pine needles, debris) is actually the leading cause of foundation and Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk waterproofing issues in homes. If not addressed, these issues can worsen over time, resulting in far more serious and expensive repairs.

Healthy Youth USA Foundation, you can fund scholarships for families that can’t afford an afterschool program. The 16-year-old nonprofit is one of the lowest-priced and largest out-of-school programs in the area, yet some still face a financial barrier. 5676 Roberts Dr. healthyyouthusa.org

Commit to being physically active for 46 days and you can change the outcome of childhood cancer. Why 46? It’s the number of kids diagnosed each school day. Sign up for the #RallyFit 46 Challenge and become one of the passionate supporters who have made it possible for the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research to award $20 million in grants since 2006. 5775 Glenridge Dr., Bldg.
