hef Jamie Adams is one of those guys you wish you’d known in high school. He’s easy to talk to, has a wry sense of humor and doesn’t seem to sweat the small stuff. He plays guitar in a band and he’s an avid cyclist, so you might say he rocks to his own rhythm. He goes about his business with just a slight bit of irreverence, evidenced by his quirky colorful glasses and bright red clogs. His restaurant in Sandy Springs, il Giallo Osteria and Bar (pronounced eelJAH-lo) reflects his light-hearted attitude, with its airy, inviting dining space that offers a full view of the busy kitchen. The rustic stone walls, one of which sports a giant map of Italy on a chalkboard, are juxtaposed with sleek wood decor and comfortable red and orange furniture. The restaurant has a casual, relaxed vibe, but the fare is clearly what Adams takes very seriously. It’s carefully considered down to the last detail, a reflection of Adams’ true passion—the food of the coastal regions of Italy.

As a young man, Adams finally decided it was time for him to strike out on an adventure of his own and he left for Italy in 1985. What was supposed to be a fairly short trip turned into a five-year stint, where he worked in restaurants to support himself and to unlock the mysteries of the food prepared by local chefs. “It changed my life,” he says. “I got jobs where I would work on the restaurant’s farm during the day and

Adams explains that his interest in Italian cuisine started when his older siblings travelled to Italy on occasion and returned with stories about the culture and food they had enjoyed.

make pasta in the kitchen in the evening. We would pick cherries and apricots and then go mow the grass. It was truly farm-to-table.” He eventually returned to Atlanta and, in an interview, impressed Pricci (then Capriccio) owner Pano Karatassos with pasta dishes he made from scratch; he was offered the job as sous chef for the prestigious restaurant. In 1993, Karatassos’ company, Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, took over Veni Vidi Vici and made Adams executive chef in that successful venture. Unfortunately, life had a change of plans for Adams. “I was in pretty good shape and wasn’t overweight, but I ended up as the lucky recipient of coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG)—fondly referred to as ‘Cabbage,’” he recalls. Adams recuperated from the procedure and took up cycling after his wife, Kim, gave him a bike as a gift. “I had a wake-up call,” he says. The health scare opened his eyes about exercise and eating fresh, locally sourced food.

I email, call, beg, wheedle, cajole to get donations. I’m not above bribing people with food to raise money! This year, in the Chefs Cycle race, nearly 200 chefs will ride from Carmel to Santa Barbara, California, from June 27 to 29. Riding for three days takes me out of my comfort zone. They picked this location because it had everything they wanted. “We love Sandy Springs—it’s a small community and our location is easy for everyone to get to. We completely remodeled the interior, so it’s laid out just the way we liked. We are right down the street from Whole Foods—I know they do their homework. If this location is good enough for them, that’s saying something.” The restaurant opened in November 2015 and has enjoyed a warm reception from the Sandy Springs community.

Fast-forward to 2015: Karatassos closed Veni Vidi Vici and Adams and general manager Leonardo Moura threw themselves into a new project— il Giallo. Adams chose the name as a nod to the art of making pasta. “It means ‘yellow,’ the color of egg yolks and pasta. It also means ‘mystery,’ and I think there’s just a little bit of mystery behind cooking.” He asked interior designer Vivien Leigh, who also had travelled to and fallen in love with Italy, to design the interior. “She’s got an extensive knowledge of ‘The Boot,’ and she really did a great job,” he reflects.

Missi Wolf walks the walk. She knows what it’s like to face a challenge that could knock her down if she gives up. Her resolve has driven her to success as the owner of BLAST Fitness Studio in Sandy Springs’ new Gateway Center. After Wolf’s second daughter was born, she was told by her doctor that she was morbidly obese and borderline diabetic. “I was devastated,” she says. “I wasn’t sure where to turn or how to get my health back.” With characteristic determination, Wolf immersed herself in getting into shape physically and emotionally. She enrolled in physiology and kinesiology classes so she could understand what she was up against. What emerged from her studies was a plan: “I needed to fit in the most exercise I could in the shortest amount of time. I needed a nutrition plan I could live with,” she explains. In two years she lost 100 pounds and felt better than ever.

Wolf was ready to spread the word about her health enlightenment. “I decided to gather a team of the best exercise and nutrition experts I could find and open BLAST Fitness Studio.” She opened her first studio in 2008 and has been off and running (literally) ever since.
When asked why she chose Sandy Springs for her newest location, she responds that she knows the area well—she grew up here; this is where her target clientele lives, works and plays. “My clients are busy people who really value time,” she says. “Our workouts are about being effective and efficient, so finding a location that’s convenient for clients was a big deal.” She is acutely aware that, sometimes in life, even a dynamo like her has to lean on others for support. “One of my daughters is battling addiction,” she acknowledges. “She’s doing great, but it’s changed my life 100 percent. We’ve learned to let go and ask for help. It reinforces for me why it’s so important to support people who reach out for resources they need to have a better life.” Wolf and her team encourage clients to worry only about themselves when they walk in the studio door. “Our focus is for them to find balance in their lives,” she says. “I just want them to get moving and get motivated to take care of themselves.”

How did you start your construction and design business?
I’d always been into remodeling. After high school, I went to a design-build school in Connecticut. I came back to Atlanta and
I fell off a ladder one day and broke my wrist—a contractor’s worst nightmare! I had to delegate tasks to other workers. I was teaching them skills and I loved it. When my wrist healed, I realized that I wanted to be a contractor in charge of projects instead of just working on parts of them.

How do you achieve a work-life balance when you have so much responsibility?
Lots of long weekend vacations. You have to get away from the stress sometimes. Physically away. I went on a trip with buddies recently, motorcycling across Montana. My wife, Meredyth, is really supportive about that. I even took my six-year-old son, Skyler, on a trip. The stress just melts away.

What motivated you to build your new office building on Roswell Road?
For years, my team worked out of a basement office in my home. I wanted a great space where we could all work—free of the noise of the dishwasher and other distractions in my house. The new office location is close to most of my clients in Sandy Springs and Buckhead so I can be as efficient as possible. And I can take my dog, Harley, for a walk in the Blue Heron Nature Preserve behind our office.
