Dear Sandy Springs Neighbors, I’m excited about 2020! I’m not sure if it’s just because I love even numbers, or what have you, but you’ll always hear me say, “Change is good.” Whether you want to try your hand at ice-skating (check out Center Ice Arena on Roswell Road) or you want to run your first 10K (see page 19), give it a go! Joshua Leonard has a dream. “I want to build an animation studio in Atlanta. I want Leonard Studios to be a powerhouse for animation and positive stories,” he says. Joshua is the creator of Team Supreme, an animated story about a group of differently abled superhero kids fighting everyday struggles, like bullying, that people with special needs often face. “My core message is inclusion and acceptance.” Team Supreme has six members, each with a different disease or disability—Dr. Jackson (epilepsy), Zeek (autism), Sweet Pea (sickle cell), Mech (spina bifida), Li (blind), and Thumper (deaf). “Eventually, I want to have a universe of superheroes like Marvel or DC Comics with all types of disabilities. I have a comic coming out in the near future, so I’ll be able to touch on some of the extra characters.” A pilot for the Team Supreme cartoon is also in development by writer and producer Lena Waithe of Hillman Grad Productions. Joshua researched his characters by talking to doctors, friends with disabilities, and others. “As I learned more about these so-called ‘disabilities,’ I fell in love. I told my dad, if I wasn’t an artist, I’d probably be a doctor. Learning how the mind of someone with autism works was amazing to me,” explains Joshua.
Though his life is hectic and he’s “a big-time homebody,” Joshua makes time for regular hikes with his 14-year-old daughter, Saniyah, at Morgan Falls Overlook Park. His favorite spots for good eating include Five Guys and Bella’s G. Kitchen. “Everything at Bella’s is fresh, and they cook it right in front of you. Delicious. I usually get the blackened fish sandwich.” Recently, Joshua was the guest speaker at a Disability Mentoring Day event hosted by Novartis. The event helps students with special needs learn how to successfully transition out of high school. “I told them, ‘You all have superpowers. You’re all good at something. Joshua is a Hurricane Katrina evacuee from Biloxi, Mississippi, who landed in Atlanta. “I was homeless for seven months,” he says. “It might sound crazy, but I’m really thankful that I went through that phase in my life. Caty Bergmark

Caty Bergmark’s father gave her an unusual ultimatum when she was preparing for college. “He said, ‘Acting is your passion and if you don’t pursue it, we’re not going to help you financially while you’re in college. You’re going to do what you love.’ I was absolutely surprised,” says Caty. Thanks to her dad’s ‘gentle prodding,’ the 28-year-old chose Theater and Performance Studies as her major at Kennesaw State University. Since she graduated from Kennesaw in 2015, Caty’s been successfully living her dream, performing with the Aurora Theatre, and Act3 Playhouse, among others. The stage is where she feels most at home. “There’s really something amazing about sitting in a room feeling the energy of the people,” Caty says. She also co-founded Zero Circle Theatre Company, a small ensemble of Kennesaw State University alumni and Aurora Theatre actors, which debuted its first production in 2018.

When she’s not onstage, Caty enjoys playing Mario Kart 8 at Battle & Brew. “I love video games that are group based. I like anything that’s going to get a whole group involved.” The craft burgers at North River Tavern are another food favorite. “They’re delicious! And they’re huge! So you’re really getting a lot of bang for your buck.” However, Caty is happiest when she’s at home. “I’m close to the Chattahoochee River. I like to go there and skip rocks,” she says. “At the end of the day, I really just enjoy being able to leave the busy city and be among trees, the woods, and nature.” zerocircletheatre.com

Though acting has her heart, Caty directed her first major show at Act3 last fall. The musical, “Baby,” follows three couples at different stages of life as they prepare for pregnancy and upcoming parenthood. “It’s so relatable for a lot of generations. It feels more timeless than a lot of musicals that way,” Caty explains. “Even though I don’t have children, I’m starting to relate to the middle couple. It’s comforting to watch someone else struggle the same way you do.”

If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing].
