Teachers can make a world of difference. For me, that was Dr. Gerald Grow. When I was in graduate school, he was my magazine journalism professor. After I graduated with my master’s, Dr. Grow arranged a meeting for me to meet with the executive editor of People magazine. That in-person get-together at our school’s job fair landed me an internship at People’s New York City headquarters followed by a full-time job offer less than three months later. One teacher believing in me played a major role in what I call a career of a lifetime!

Hidden History in Vinings Brought to you by The Christine Bradley Team Photos & Article by Leah Martin Sometimes secrets are hidden in plain sight. You may not be aware, but Vinings is speckled with cemeteries dating back to the Antebellum period. Two fine examples are tucked away beneath the shade of office buildings on top of Vinings Mountain - known also as Mount Wilkinson. Buried here, are the founders of our community which include the families of Pace, Wilke, Yarbrough, Carter, Randall, and McAfee. The early settlers quietly watch over the city, undisturbed, atop the mountain. If you look closely, you will find smaller family cemeteries in the community. Just off Woodland Brook, between Rebel Valley & the new John Weiland development, you will spot a collection of headstones. Resting in peace, lie the family who once owned, occupied, and farmed the land. History is all around us, if we just open our eyes! The Vinings Historic Preservation Society is committed to preservation & education so that Vinings never forgets its noted & unique identity.

Don’t want to knock down a wall to create more space? Jill Barnes, a design project manager at Cortland Partners made this cramped Smyrna bathroom appear larger by simply adding ample lighting and a full-wall mirror to reflect light and brighten the space. Another trick used to make the room look bigger? Hanging the shower curtain at almost ceiling height, to draw the eye upward. CortlandPartners.com

Q:
What is the most important tennis skill to master as a beginner?
A:
Direction control is imperative. Practice by playing ‘short court.’ Rally from the service line and keep the ball inside the service box. This will force you to fine-tune your direction controls, as the slightest mistake will cause your ball to go out of bounds. —Stephen Woods, tennis program director at Windy Hill Athletic Club. 135 Interstate N. Pkwy. Midtown.com/Atlanta
Do you have brittle nails? If yes, one culprit could be lack of moisture. “To combat
frail nails, apply grapeseed oil around the cuticles. Packed with vitamins and nutrients, the oil moisturizes sans the greasy feeling,” says Adysson Schultz, a salon staffer at The Posh Spot. 3621 Vinings Slope SE. ThePoshSpot.com

ccording to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, at least 30 million people suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. And for almost 20 years, Ginair Goodwin-McKerrow has worked diligently to reduce that daunting number. The licensed psychotherapist specializes in helping her patients overcome eating disorders, body image issues, and depression.

“I LOVE WORKING WITH ADOLESCENT WOMEN WITH EATING DISORDERS.” —GINAIR GOODWIN-MCKERROW
[
A longtime member of the Vinings community, Ginair discovered her calling during an internship at Ridgeview Institute, a mental health facility in Smyrna. Reminiscing fondly, Ginair says, “I loved working with adult and adolescent women with eating disorders.” The facility hired her and shortly after, Ginair went on to open her own practice in 2006.
The wife and mother of two has not only devoted her professional life to battling eating disorders, but also her personal life. She has worked with the Eating Disorders Information Network for two decades and even won its Celebrity Dance Challenge, “Dancing for Body Esteem” in 2011. In addition, Ginair serves on the board of local charity, Children Helping Children. When Ginair isn’t in her office, you can find her having fun with her family kayaking along the Chattahoochee River or spending quality time together at the Cochise Riverview Club. “For us, Mother Nature is the draw of being in Vinings and near the river,” she says. If you catch her at Canoe, which her husband, George, owns, she’ll most likely be digging into the house-smoked salmon and the Popcorn Ice-Cream Sundae. AtlantaCenterForWellness.com

A desire to bring her treatment approach, which focuses on collaboration, connection, and care to even more patients led her to co-found the Atlanta Center for Wellness with Ephrat L. The mental health facility features nearly 30 clinicians that tackle challenges such as addiction and trauma and provides services for wellness, stress reduction, mindfulness and more.

Every Child. Every Day. www.stbs.org
1. Our internal thoughts and feelings may be difficult to verbalize; art provides a tool for getting these outside of ourselves and releasing intense emotions. This feels cathartic and enhances emotional resiliency, making you more apt to handle whatever hardships life throws your way. 2. It stimulates communication between parts of the brain and enhances neuroplasticity, or the ability to form connections between brain cells, allowing your brain to function more effectively and improving memory.
2160 COOPER LAKE ROAD SMYRNA, GA 30080 • 678-279-4300
3. It relieves stress and anxiety, relaxes the mind, and creates a sense of calm. Entering a calm state also has physical benefits, such as: reducing blood pressure, improving your energy level, reducing pain, and even reducing symptoms of chronic illness. 4. It gives you an opportunity to problem-solve and implement flexible-thinking. When you make art, things do not go exactly as planned and you are constantly faced with choices. This improves problemsolving and flexible thinking in other areas of your life. 5. It makes you feel good. Making art activates the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine (which makes you feel good) and reduces cortisol levels (which is the stress hormone), thus reducing depression and improving your mood.

6. It improves attention. Focusing on art and getting lost in creativity activates and strengthens the brain’s attention system, thus actually making you more attentive when you are not creating art.

rom the moment she stepped onstage donning her Christmas best and a dinosaur mask for her kindergarten play, Sarah Clay Lindvall has loved performing. “WHEN YOU ENCOURAGE A STUDENT TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES ... YOU ARE REMINDED OF
YOUR PURPOSE.”
—SARAH CLAY LINDVALL
The musical genius—Sarah knows how to play every instrument in the orchestra—has a bachelor’s of Music in Music Education: Choral Music from Georgia Southern University and a master’s in Vocal Performance: Musical Theatre from New York University.
“It is a privilege to work with a program that is well established and provides excellent arts opportunities for local students,” Sarah says. “Being able to add my own flavor, I work hard to ensure efficiency, to expand programming, and to help build a greater sense of community. My team and I want educators to connect deeply, so that they can discuss issues and develop solutions for their classrooms. By creating this community, we can better support students in their endeavors.” Assisting pupils in their pursuit of finding their best artistic selves has always been what’s key for Sarah. “When you believe in a student and encourage them to believe in themselves and they go out there and nail it, you are reminded of your purpose—this is why I do what I do,” she says. “When I see students happily performing onstage in front of thousands of people, that makes it worth it.” Offstage, you can find Sarah shopping at Vinings Jubilee, grabbing a delicious bite at FIGO Pasta or The Public House at Vinings, and then burning off the calories at Pure Barre. When in need of a night in, she loves entertaining in her newly redecorated pad with her hubby, and their favorite family member, Binx the cat. ArtsBridgeGa.org

Tired of Suffering from Sleep Loss? How Oral Appliance Therapy Can Help By Dr. Marianna Kovitch
A
ccording to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 12 million Americans have sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by cessations in breathing during sleep. Although sleep apnea is common, many individuals are unaware that they have it. In fact, it is estimated that only 16 percent of people with sleep apnea receive treatment. The most widely used treatment for sleep apnea involves using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to deliver constant and steady air pressure to the airways via a hose and mask worn over the nose. However, drawbacks and limitations of the CPAP machine have made way for more modern treatment alternatives, including oral appliance therapy. Atlanta Smiles & Wellness, a comprehensive dental practice in Atlanta, has helped hundreds of sleep apnea patients get a good night’s rest with oral appliance therapy. Here, our team shares more information on oral appliances and their benefits.
How Do Oral Appliances Work?
FALL 2018
There are two main types of oral appliances: the mandibularrepositioning device (MRD) and the tongue-retaining device (TRD). MRDs are designed similarly to sports mouth guards that hold the lower jaw in a protruding position during sleep, creating more space at the back of the throat so air can freely flow through. This in turn eliminates snoring. MRDs are now available for people who are missing many or all of their teeth. Oral appliances are crafted using high quality materials. Latex-free and
metal-free appliances are available for individuals with allergies.
Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy Portable. Perhaps the biggest complaint patients have about CPAP machines is that they are bulky. Oral appliances are quite the opposite. Small and discreet, oral appliances are very easy to move and travel with.
“I’ve had sleep apnea and snoring problems for over 20 years. I have tried everything, surgery, CPAP, you name it I’ve tried it. Then Dr. Kovitch made me an appliance and changed my life. I do not snore anymore at all and finally get to sleep in the same room with my girlfriend all night.” —M Reeves Comfortable. Many patients feel that the mask connected to CPAP machines is uncomfortable to wear, and some patients have difficulty keeping it in place while they sleep. Others complain that the air pump is noisy or causes bloating. Oral devices are comfortable to wear
and noise is not a factor, making it more likely that you will experience sound and uninterrupted sleep. If you have sleep apnea, or suspect that you may have it, Atlanta Smiles & Wellness encourages you to schedule a consultation with us. Speak to a member of our friendly team by calling (404) 262-7733 or emailing us today. Dr. Kovitch completed her Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia after earning her Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Chemistry and publication in biochemistry from Georgia State University. Dr. Kovitch is an active board member of the Academy of General Dentistry since 2013 and has been a contributor to the development of dentistry excellence in Georgia. She is also an active member of the American Dental Association and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Top Teachers Make The Grade
Standout Educators Receive an A-Plus For Their Commitment To Our Kids

hen you talk with teachers who are successful in their classrooms, the same concept comes up again and again. They speak about instilling a sense of
confidence and pride in their students—and they’re passionate about the process.
Their strategies and techniques may differ, but one common theme emerges: They
view students as individuals who may struggle, and even fail at times, but all kids have the potential

Shay McNeil forbids any student who enters her classroom to utter the words, “I hate math.” “Because it’s a challenging course, they rarely start off liking the subject,” she laughs. “I work all year to retrain their perceptions—whenever they’re frustrated, I ask them to say aloud that they love math!” She says middle schoolers “are in that stage where they no longer believe in unicorns, but are still fascinated by dragons. They’re impressionable, but are developing their own opinions. They come in and give me a little more every

her classroom. “I
love to teach by singing, using different voices and telling jokes with my first-graders. They are always the stars of my show!” she says. “I want my students’ parents to know how much I care about their kids. Yes, I make sure students are academically challenged. Many grow into fluent readers in first grade and there’s nothing as magical as that! But, more importantly, I want kids to know I see the qualities that make each of them unique and I want to embrace that. I am a parent of three. Parenting is tough work. I get it. The parents and I work as a team—we listen to each other and always do what’s best for their child.”
Hannah Cousar admires the boundless thirst for learning inherent in her students.
“I love their natural dispositions of curiosity and enthusiasm, their honesty and eagerness to learn new things.” Her classroom is filled with bounty from Mother Nature— she encourages her students to bring in whatever they find outdoors. “I’ve been given huge cow bones, a partially decayed possum, a hornet’s nest, a frog that had been run over, and a live snake! It’s exciting to share in a child’s delight when they discover the beauty of a small robin’s egg or a special rock. The joy for me is opening up the world of nature for them.”

Heidi Gray helps her students relate with the past in her history classes. “I try to teach with modern-day examples because kids have very little frame of reference for many things we talk about. It’s my job to bring those ideas to life for them.” She says sensing what’s on her students’ minds is a key to connecting with them. “I try to be sensitive to their needs, both intellectual and emotional. It’s a delicate balance. I challenge them to achieve their very best, but I know that my class isn’t the only class they’re taking. They have many demands placed on them. We have no idea what kids are actually dealing with daily, so I want to support them however I can.”
