Designed Plant Communities: A Fresh Approach to Designing and Managing Gardens Presented by Scott Stewart, Tuesday, June 4, 7 p.m. Dr. Scott Stewart, Executive Director of Chicago’s Millennium Park, is deeply passionate about the value and role of the public space. His goal: Create free, open and equitable cultural experiences for people in public spaces of design, artistic and architectural significance- utilizing a style more informed by nature than rules.

Masons, Miners and Thieves: The Real Lives of America’s Bees Presented by Paige Embry, Wednesday, June 26, 7 p.m. Follow a gardener’s adventures into the field with the bee scientists and farmers to explore the lives of bees with author Paige Embry- based on the book Our Native Bees: North America’s Endangered Pollinators and the Fight to Save Them. A book-signing follows. Lectures are free and no reservations are required. The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture Series is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Loridans Foundation.

Beehive Inspection

Orchids for Beginners II

Opening a beehive can be both exciting and daunting. In this advanced session, we will open and inspect a beehive emphasizing proper technique and exploring what we are seeing. Students will provide their own hat and veil, which is the minimal protective gear for entering our apiary for a hive inspection. Space is extremely limited. Oncidium, Denrobium and Cattleya orchids are adapted to climates with intermittent rainfall and have evolved specialized organs to store water. These plants require higher light levels than are found in typical homes. This class examines the cultural requirements of this group of orchids and their adaptation to the home environment. Build Your Own Bog Bowl

Orchids are intriguingly complex. A simplified approach, using black and white media, aids in exploring and drawing orchids. This class is part of the Botanical Drawing Program. It is a pre-requisite for Drawing Orchids in Colored Pencil. Previous drawing experience is strongly recommended.
