The Microbiome of the Garden

Presented by Eugenia Bone, Tuesday, May 1, 7 p.m. Eugenia Bone is a nationally known science and food writer and author whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, and many more. At this lecture, learn about the evolutionary history of soil, the plant/ microbe relationship, the cooperative relationship between the microbiomes of soil and plants, and what that implies in terms of plant and human health. Compare the microbiomes of plants and people, gardens and families, and in the process demonstrates that life itself is a vast conspiracy of microbes.

Domenica Marchetti will share her exploration of the many preserving traditions and techniques that Italian cooks rely on to conserve fresh produce and specialty foods. Italian cookbook author Domenica Marchetti will discuss the research for her most recent book, “Preserving Italy,” and the food artisans she met along the way. Domenica graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism and worked at several newspapers before becoming an enthusiastic food writer and cookbook author of seven titles focused on the delightful cuisine of Italy. Lectures are free and no reservations are required. The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture Series is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Loridans Foundation.

Intermediate Drawing in Colored Pencil This class builds on Intro to Drawing in Colored Pencil with the rich colors and forms of the tropical world. Large drawings emphasize contours and focal points of detail. Plant materials are selected from the Garden’s greenhouses or students may choose to draw plants from home.
