Refugee Recipe Celebration

Sat.–Sun. June 24–25, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Free with Garden Admission Our garden chef, with special guests from Friends of Refugees, spices up the cooking demonstrations in honor of World Refugee Day. Orchids for Beginners

Drawing Orchids in Black and White Orchids are intriguingly complex. A simplified approach, using black and white media, aids in exploring and drawing orchids. This class is part of the Botanical Drawing Program. It is a pre-requisite for Drawing Orchids in Colored Pencil. Previous drawing experience is strongly recommended. Shade Gardening If you have a shaded yard and think your choices are limited, you’re in for a surprise! Learn about understory trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plant choices, including many seldom-used selections. The class focuses on plants that work well in combination for a healthy plant community.

Orchids generally can be divided into two broad groups that dictate cultural requirements. Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum, belong to the group whose care requirements are closest to other typical houseplants. This class will examine how to grow these plants in the typical home environment. Drawing Orchids in Colored Pencil Explore the exquisite and varied colorations of the Orchid family. Students will start by drawing from color reproductions of orchids, then move on to work from live orchid stems. The first week, bring a favorite color reproduction of orchids. Art of the Quick Sketch for Botanical Drawing The quick sketch is an advance skill built with experience and practice. The seasoned artist makes it look easy. Overtime, s/he has learned how to see clearly in order to capture the essence of the subject with economy and simplicity. Students will gain insight into this process drawing subjects with skill and speed. Moss Dish Garden Workshop Create your own miniature moss landscape at a special hands-on workshop. Annie Martin (aka Mossin’ Annie) will discuss the values of mosses in today’s landscapes while she demonstrates design principles and planting methods on a smaller scale in a container.
