LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: HANDMADE GOODS
SCOTT WHITE
Here are three up-and-coming businesses selling handcrafted goods for you to discover.
SQUIRREL BRAND PRESERVED GOODS CO.
Owner Eryn March makes all of Squirrel Brand’s preserves and jams in small batches, many with freshly picked flowers and fruit. Each jar is handmade by an old-fashioned European method that requires very little, if any, commercial pectin. The three most popular flavors — Bourbon Peach Preserves, Strawberry Balsamic Preserves and Blueberry Lemon Jam — start to pop up first at market as early summer fruits come into season. Other flavors rotate throughout the season and include Wild Honeysuckle Jelly, Hot Pepper Jelly, Backyard Plum Jam, Wild Mulberry Jelly and others depending on what fruits are most bountiful.
Find Squirrel Brand: These jars of jewel-colored jam can be found at the Grant Park Farmers Market every second Sunday of the month. Stock is available weekly at a few Community Farmers Markets (CFM) at Grant Park, Ponce, East Atlanta and Virginia Highland at CFM’s Treat Yo’ Shelf General Store booth. Order online and have it shipped or opt for local pickup at www.squirrelbrandgoods.com. @squirrelbrandgoods / www.facebook.com/squirrelbrandgoods.
Owner Kimberly Hall crafts each specialty eggroll flavor with organic ingredients and christens them for a female character in a rock song. Fall for the savory flavors of Maggie Mae (pimento mac-and-cheese with bacon), Lucy in the Sky (mushrooms, goat cheese) and the brand new Surfer Rosa (sun-dried tomatoes and avocado). If you’re feeling sweet, Hollaback Girl (bananas foster with rum caramel sauce) or Sweet Jane (apple pie) have your number. Other offerings include Olive My Love tapenade salad and fresh Greek and Asian bowls.
Find Roll With It: Kimberly’s pop-up is found at the My Daily Bread booth. Currently, she is at Halcyon Farmers Market, Vickery Village Farmers Market, Vinings Jubilee Farmers Market, Alpharetta Farmers Market and Milton Farmers Market. GREEN CRAFT WORKS
GREEN CRAFT WORKS
Patti Green’s candle and gifts company grew out of her frustration from purchasing pricey candles with headache-inducing scents that didn’t even burn properly. Green Craft Works introduces candles that are made with quality ingredients and crafted in sustainable packaging. Green turns San Pellegrino water bottles or an enamelware mug into candle containers. Scents such as the spicy Gentleman’s Barber Shop, Magnolia and Sweet Pea and Bay Rum can fill the air with off-the-beaten-path fragrances. Home goods and other gifts are also available, expanding the offerings to include cutting boards, simmering potpourri and candle containers created from sustainably sourced materials.
